An exciting new initiative has just been launched and is about hit Selwyn by storm.

Passmebuy is the brainchild of Weedons local Alex McGrath and the website has just gone live.

The idea of Passmebuy came about when Alex thought it would be handy if there was one source that offered information and locations of roadside stalls, mobile shops, coffee vans, etc., that was easy to access.

“Running a horse poo stall myself over the years, and while it’s always been steady, I have friends who sell so much more because they’re on busier roads,” Alex says. She asked herself how she could make her stall as ‘visible’ as the ones on busy roads? Her answer was to create a map.

Alex says, “Being able to shop for local produce and goods is great for the health of our communities, the health of our bank balance and that of the person we buy from, and the planet by supporting shorter supply chains.” However, busy lives can often throw up barriers to committing to shopping locally.

And that’s where Passmebuy comes in. “If we had information at our fingertips about where local goods and produce are available, it would be easier to shop from them more often!”

Plans are in place for an app

to make it even easier to locate local goods and produce. In the meantime, Alex is focussing on building up the numbers of locations on the map and has offered people with roadside stalls to list their stall free of charge until November 20 (thereafter it will be $2 a week).

“It is absolutely critical to its success for buyers and sellers, that the map is busy and bustling.”

SUPPORTING OLDER PEOPLE

The Selwyn Community Care Trust continues to grow in its provision of services to our community. Many people who moved here after the earthquake comment on the lack of public transport available in Rolleston and how much they appreciate our team of volunteer drivers who will take them to and from an appointment for a koha, or gifted payment.

Our elderly population in Rolleston is growing and we need to remember that transport is an issue for many. The motorway has assisted in access to the CBD but the number of large trucks on the

roads can be quite frightening for elderly drivers, not to mention roadworks and potholes. Remember that we also offer van trips for coffee, lunches, and day excursions. This month we are taking two trips to the Hurunui Garden Tours, which will be a lovely day out, weather permitting. SWELL.

Celebrating the wellbeing and inclusion of Selwyn’s older residents, the SWELL Seniors' Lifestyle Expo provides an opportunity for the community to connect with over 100 community clubs, organisations and wellbeing

providers. Listen to insightful guest speakers, participate in fun activities, enjoy a variety of food vendors, or perhaps do a spot of Christmas shopping at one of the local market stalls.

Following the SWELL Expo, there is a two-week series of fun activities around the district. From fitness classes to poetry reading and bingo –there is something for everyone.

Visit Selwyn.govt.nz/swell for more information.

HORORATA HIGHLAND GAMES

Nestled in the Canterbury foothills the tiny Hororata village is again preparing to welcome over 10,000 people to celebrate their Scottish roots. Kilts will swish, bagpipes will cry, cabers will turn and the haggis will be tamed at the 12th Hororata Highland Games to be held Saturday, November 11 2023.

The Hororata Highland Games sees all the traditional Scottish competitions take place over one massive day at the Hororata Domain. The festival hosts New Zealand’s biggest one day Highland dancing competition, top level pipe bands, solo pipers and drummers, Tug O’ War teams and of course the strong men and women competing in the Heavy events. The Junior Warriors sees primary school aged children competing in light versions of the Heavy events while the Kilted Mile provides an opportunity for the fleet footed to gain a coveted Hororata Highland Games trophy.

Visitors don’t have to just sit on the side lines, they can have a go at tossing cabers, hurling haggis, eating pies, Tug O’ War, running a Kilted Mile or donning on the tartan for the best dressed lad and lassie. New for 2023, there will be a massed Scottish Country Dance where everyone can join in. This dance has been especially choregraphed for Hororata and a video will be released closer to the event so people can learn it. Once people get through the gates there are heaps of free

activities to have a go at, no matter your age. Families often say it is the one event everyone right from grandparents to toddlers and even teenagers can enjoy together. There are also musical performances, Scottish story time and have-a-go bagpipes in amongst a huge range of quality market stalls as well as over 30 food trucks. Don’t miss the haggis burgers or black pudding.

Discounted tickets for the Hororata Highland Games November 11 are on sale now

Please note, there will be no gate sales this year. Kids under 16 years are free. The Games is held in the Hororata Domain, 45 minutes inland from Canterbury. All profits from the event are invested back into the community.

MINIMISE YOUR POWER BILLS

Harness the sun to utilise free solar energy in your home or business.

There is free solar energy available to us every day - the sun. You just need a high performing PV (photo voltaic) solar panel system that is professionally installed to convert it into electricity.

Green Spark Solar recommends and installs premium grade Trina Dual Glass Solar Panels along with internationally sourced inverters and electrical equipment to give their customers the best performance output in the long term. These panels come with a 30-year performance warranty. Single glass panels have a 25-year warranty. The company specialises in

grid-tied, hybrid and fully offgrid systems. They also supply and install a range of solar batteries where required. Many other situations can have solar power such as dairy farms, and other commercial and industrial applications. The basic concept is that photo voltaic panels are installed on the roof or ground mounted and convert ultraviolet rays from the sun into electricity, at any time there is light available, which you can use within the home. The grid itself acts like a giant communal battery—any power that you produce in excess to your needs is exported back to the grid and you receive

credits for this on your power account.

Green Spark Solar offers some of the latest technology in solar equipment providing electricity to all electrical items in your home or business including preferential heating of your hot water cylinder.

Benefits of solar power:

• You save money. Up to 90% of your bill even without a battery in some situations.

• Solar Power is a top investment, with a rate of return well above bank deposits or even borrowing costs. Best of all it’s tax free.

• Do something great for the environment.

• Improve your independence and comfort.

• Enjoy a guaranteed investment, in the sense the performance is covered by warranty for 25 years.

“Go with the investment that rises every day”.

• It feels good to know power price increases will have little effect on your pocket in the future.

• Improve the value of your home. Solar powered houses are worth more and sell faster.

Contact Tony, your local solar advisor (see contact details in advert).

He is happy to visit and evaluate what size solar system is best for you and your budget. Tony has had his own solar system for over three years, so has practical experience on solar performance in the Canterbury region. You can then make an informed decision with absolutely no pressure.

GOOD OL’ FASHION FAMILY FUN

The Hororata Parish Fair will be one of the biggest free annual markets in Selwyn this Spring! With over 60 market stalls offering a huge variety of crafts, toys, clothes, candles, soaps, art, flowers, birdbaths, and everything in between!

Not to mention the Parish's stalls such as the white elephant, plants, and produce. The Country Auction will be at 11.30am and there will be some great bargains. Thanks to funding from the Selwyn District Council, there will be free activities like archery and pedalmania, plus

the traditional kids’ races. Pony rides and bouncy castles will be there too!

Creative Kids is a fun competition for children to enter their creations. This year's theme is 'Pillars of our Community'! Draw your favourite place in the community or build it out of Lego, let your imagination go wild.

This year, all proceeds from the Fair will go towards the Parish’s Pastoral Care prog ramme. The Parish has recently employed the Reverend Peg Riley, who is continuing the good work of

our former vicar Jenni Carter. Peg is well qualified to carry out this role with decades of experience serving the community as a vicar and hospital and school chaplain. Peg is solely employed to provide pastoral care to the community - she will not be involved in other Church activities or services. Entry to the Fair is FREE! Make sure the Hororata Parish Spring Fair is on your calendar. See advertisement alongside or visit www.hororataparish.co.nz for more information.

KINGFISHERS UNBEATEN

The Selwyn Football Club’s ninth grade team, the Kingfishers, finished their season with a winning streak of 19 wins over 19 games. The season finale was played on Saturday, September 2 against the Weka's, which resulted in an intense match with the final score 6-3. Over the season, the Kingfishers scored 155 goals (an average of 8.6 goals scored per game) and conceded 24 goals.

One of the team’s parents Dan Morriss believes the Kingfishers has achieved its winning streak through an amazing team effort and a coaching team that is second to none. He says, “We have been very fortunate to have two coaches who have dedicated so much time support and energy.”

Coaches Robbie Bowden and Tina Washington were also assisted by Selwyn Colt players Tyler and Lucas. Dan

says, “The coaches played a vital role in teaching the boys not only how to play football but how to play fairly”.

The Kingfishers’ finale to the season competing in a twoday football competition on September 23-24 at Kendall Park and most recent win was in the Waimakariri under 9

Tournament. Over the course of two days the team played six games and finished off the tournament with a game of two halves, coming back from being 1-0 down to taking the game to penalties having scored an equalizer in the last 10 minutes and beating Cashmere Tech on penalties.

NICOLA GRIGG – OPINION PIECE

Voting is now open and the choice is clear for Selwyn residents heading to the polls. We can choose either a chaotic coalition of Labour, Greens and the Māori Party or a strong stable National-led government.

The case for a National-led government is simple. Labour has mismanaged and vandalised the economy on a scale unlike anything we have seen in recent history – and New Zealanders are suffering for it.

Government spending is up 80 per cent - $1 billion a week more than 2017. The current account deficit is the largest in the OECD. The International Monetary Fund forecasts show that next year our economic growth will be among the lowest in the entire world, and we will be in recession by the end of the year.

We here in Selwyn are not immune to the cost-ofliving crisis gripping the country. Rents here are up, on average, by $140 per week, house prices are up 46 percent since 2017, and the revised dairy payout is going to knock $200 million of the local economy.

Sadly, more and more of our people are needing help. The number of those receiving a benefit in Selwyn has increased by 119 percent, and the number of our youth on job seeker benefits has gone up 43 percent. Even more worrying, crime is on the rise in our once-safe towns. Call-outs to Selwyn police have increased a whopping 79 percent since 2017.

For many people, things feel so bleak that they are looking at opportunities overseas and voting with their feet, with almost 40,000 Kiwis permanently leaving the country last year.

The Labour Party is working on overdrive to try to convince everyone that our economy isn’t a mess, but when inflation is still high and interest rates are continuing to go up, Kiwis feel the reality. They feel it when they are calculating their mortgage repayments, trying to make the gap between their wages and rising interest rates add up. They feel it when they anxiously watch their grocery items being scanned through the checkout. They feel it when the petrol light pops up on the dashboard of their car and they wonder how long they can make what’s left in the tank last before having to fill up.

New Zealanders are bearing the brunt of Labour’s economic mismanagement. Middle-income Kiwis are turning up to budgeting services and food banks for the first time in their lives because they just can’t get ahead. If you don’t believe me, just ask the Salvation Army in Rolleston. I am determined to do everything I can to change the government and change the sad trajectory our country is currently on. National will provide tax relief to working New Zealanders, with an average-income family with young children receiving $250 a fortnight under our plan. That’s meaningful relief that will help them navigate the cost-of-living crisis Labour has created.

Labour’s recklessness with the books and the lack of an economic plan has got New Zealand into this mess, and only National will be able to get us out of it. We will rebuild the economy and get New Zealand back on track.

Nicola Grigg, MP for Selwyn.

VOTING HAS STARTED

A general election is scheduled for 14 October this year with voting open now and ending at 7pm on Election Day. You must be on an electoral roll before you can vote. The Citizens Advice Bureau offers the following advice …

If you are enrolled, you should receive a voting information pack in your letterbox a few weeks before Election Day. This pack includes an EasyVote Card. To make voting faster, find a voting place close to home and bring along your EasyVote card. But you can vote without the card. Just show up at a voting place, and say your name and address.

You don’t need ID. The vote issuing person will look you up on the electoral roll and ask you to confirm out loud that you are who you say you are.

Take the voting paper behind the cardboard screen. Yes, cardboard furniture – no expense spared by the Electoral Commission. When you've finished ticking your voting paper, fold it in half and place it in the voting box for your electorate. Boxes are grey for Māori electorates and orange for general electorates. Voting is secret in New Zealand. No one will know if you vote for the Cannabis Party. In NZ, it’s one person, one vote, so don’t go voting in multiple places.

I have been contemplating our brave new world of ‘progress’. We have very limited cell phone coverage where we live – not in the back blocks as that would suggest, but 22k from Christchurch CBD. Our provider of communications assured me that as they were abandoning the antiquated copper lines, we would be able to still have our landline via internet. However, the great progress with fibre broadband does not pass our property and neither will it, I was told, in the next decade. Don’t worry, they said – just use your cell phone! No one worries about a land line anymore! Oh, that’s right, you

don’t have cell phone coverage. That may be a problem, have you talked with our solutions team? No, my cell phone went flat waiting to talk with a real person. Progress?

The internet is the great progressive tool of the future, and the scammers know this. It is also their great new tool. New scams make the long-lost uncle in Nigeria look laughable in the face of the elaborate ploys they have now to part the unwary from their life savings. Imitation Bank websites have banks issuing frequent warnings about how to avoid the scams, but are these warnings another scam? Click

here to find out. Progress? Try going into a bank to discuss your concerns. Oh, that’s right, there are no tellers any more. You will need to make an appointment to talk with our consultant. No sorry we don’t have any appointments available until next month. Progress? Perhaps it may be time to step back and embrace human contact. Connection is getting lost in the headlong rush to progress. Or should that be destruction?

BRAVE NEW WORLD OF ‘PROGRESS’ ROLLESTON MEN’S SHED

A donated 3D printer has helped with the repair of two recent jobs at the Rolleston Men’s Shed. The first was an electric lawnmower with a broken lever mounting bracket. The mount was sketched on a computer and the printer put to work to make a stronger replacement part.

One of the Shed's members had been asked if one local school's Chromebook computers could be fixed. Some were electronic fixes but the fault with most was broken hinge mounts. The hinges were bolted back to the display panel but the screws through the panels and metal reinforcing plates were not attractive. Each computer now has a couple of 3D printed covers over the screws and they look much tidier. Not all plastic items worked on are printed. Twenty plastic gate hinge bearings are being turned on a lathe for the iceskating rink in Christchurch. Rose trellises have been made for anyone who needs them. And a tea trolley was stripped down, parts damaged by borer replaced, reassembled and French Polished.

A good yarn and morning cuppa still play an important part of the Shed’s activities.

The Rolleston Men’s Shed is open Saturday, Monday, and Wednesday, 9am - 12noon.

PROBUS - GOOD FRIENDS, GREAT TIMES, NEW ADVENTURES

This year is the first year Probus South Pacific (PSP) will celebrate Probus Month as it becomes an annual event for clubs to look forward to.

On October 1, 2020, (PSP)in line with the United Nations Day of Older Persons, which is recognised worldwidecelebrated its inaugural Probus Day.

As the celebrations of Probus Day grew within communities and with the media, PSP recognised the important role Probus serves. It soon became clear that one day to celebrate and showcase clubs throughout New Zealand wasn’t long enough, so the day was moved to become a month-long celebration. Look out for Probus displays with information and contact details throughout the month in local libraries.

Rolleston Combined Probus Club

We’re excited to share information about our club in Probus Month 2023.

Like all the clubs in Selwyn, this week we have a display at our local library, Te Ara Atea, and hope to attract new members to our friendly social club. As well as our monthly meeting, we have regular outings to interesting places, often these are daily trips but this month we are visiting the beautiful buildings at Christ's College for the afternoon. Our speakers are varied and always interesting with some being asked back a second time. We have a Sunday Lunch Club, Walking Groups, Travel Group and Craft Club attached to our Probus Club.

Our current membership is

115, which is made up of 86% ladies and 27% men. The age range of members is between 60 to 90 plus years. Many of our members have had very interesting lives during their working years and have hobbies, which they often share with members as a mini or as a main speaker. Our meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month in the Rolleston Community Centre (9.45am -12noon).

If you are interested in attending a meeting, contact president Ann Barber on 027 588 5033. You will be made very welcome.

Rolleston Central Probus Club

Hello readers, we have had another great month of speakers and outings for the mature folk in the area, so if you are in need of company, a cuppa and a chat, come along and see what we are about.

We have 53 members and our group caters for the older generation in the district with outings, speakers and get

togethers each month. This helps keep folk active and in contact with others if they don’t have family close.

Last month Brigadier Reilly spoke on his thoughts on the war and history of Ukraine and the area, which was very interesting. Our outing to Buffalo Farm and lunch in Hororata was well responded too.

We have an upcoming trip to a Daffodil Farm and lunch again out this month. Our Out and About group is going to Governors Bay to see Onetahi House and garden, so that should be of interest to a lot of gardening folk, and, of course, the coffee mornings go down a treat as well. Biking groups and Mahjong are other interests that we have, so do join us at some stage for great company, friendship, fellowship and fun to be had, and as it is Probus Month there’s no better time.

We meet on the third Tuesday of the month; for more information, call 03 321 7466 or Denise on 027 557 0515.

LIONS CONNECTING WITH LIONS

Rolleston Lions secretary

Jackie, and first vice president Dave recently had the opportunity to attend the Lions ANZI Pacific Forum 2023, joining hundreds of other Lions from around New Zealand, Australia, and Indonesia, who are passionate about making a difference in their communities and the world. This forum was

designed to inspire, empower, and connect everyone with the best practices, resources, and people to help them achieve their goals in our community. They attended a variety of workshops that covered topics such as leadership development, service project planning, fundraising strategies, membership growth and much more. Jackie and

Dave got to network with other Lions from different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences and learn from their stories, share insights, and build lasting friendships. This forum, held at the Chateau on the Park in Christchurch, was not only a learning experience, but also a fun and memorable one.

ROLLESTON GARDENING CLUB

Did we say spring was here? A ruder awakening recently to nice frosts, and previous days cold and wet, but looking forward, we know it’s going to be great to garden in the sun. What we should be up to when out mixing with the earthplanting of most vegetables for the spring and summer, seedlings, or the plants

themselves, into well worked and manured patches. If you happen to have anything frost tender plants out in the open, cover with old plant pots with bottoms cut out or if planting potatoes, just earth them over, Now, what’s happening in the club for the next month or so? We had a great speaker last month from Oderings with

plenty of tips on planting what and where, and on natural sprays for those unwanted problems when gardening. This month is Rachel Vogan is speaking and in November, a speaker on hanging baskets, by then it’s December and the Xmas lunch outing - where has the year gone?
