Alive DJ, fades and braids and even a talking car were part of the recent fun afternoon celebrating the official opening of the new Selwyn Youth Hub, based in Rolleston Community Centre.

A steady crowd of visitors enjoyed the afternoon of celebrations with KITT the Knight Rider car, food, drink, activities and competitions. Representatives from the wide range of service providers and Selwyn’s four high schools also attended.

The Selwyn Youth Hub is a collaboration, bringing together youth services and organisations from around the community, including The Collective Trust, Youth Town, Family Planning

and Te Tahi Youth, to deliver services and programmes dedicated to young people aged twelve to twenty four years old. The Hub idea and the services provided were based on needs identified by Selwyn young people and by the principals at the four Selwyn high schools. The services are designed to help young people grow, thrive and feel connected in the Selwyn community. Services will range from health services, counselling, career advice, education and training, through to events, activities and courses parenting and youth courses, learner driver courses, drug and alcohol counselling sessions, art classes, te reo Māori classes and waiata sessions.

The Selwyn Lions Clubs’ expectations were exceeded when they received fifty two entries for their ‘Show Your Support’ Decorate a Bra Competition which raised funds for breast cancer. Around one hundred and twenty visitors attended the event and were delighted and amazed at the creativity and variety of the decorated bras from people of all ages. There are some very talented people in our community, the youngest entrant was a young man, aged eight!

Exhibitors competed for prizes in three categories, Tasty Titbits was won by Justine Stack , Bizarre Bra was won by Diane de Wagt and Back to Nature was won by Jennie Farrah de Wagt . A further award for students Under 18 was awarded to Sarah Bellinger . The Overall Judges award was won by the team from Hei Hei Health, who took time out from their busy schedule to construct their masterpiece during their lunch breaks, well done girls! Visitors also enjoyed seeing a couple of bras modelled by contestants.

The event was supported by six stallholders showcasing lovely gifts and treats for sale, while Birdsong Kitchen donated a beautiful cake for Auction. Many local businesses from Prebbleton, Lincoln and Rolleston generously donated gifts for the prizes and raffles. Selwyn Lions Club is sincerely grateful for their kindness and support. Almost everyone knows of someone who has experienced breast cancer, so ‘Show Your Support’ was an event close to many people's hearts. Jane and Kathy were our two entertaining Lions Club comperes, helping make the whole afternoon a success by raising funds, for a worthy cause, whilst providing a fun afternoon out.

A GREAT WAY TO CONNECT

Selwyn Timebank is much more than offering and requiring help or resources. It is an opportunity to connect with others and make new friends. It is a place to meet new people and discover similarities and differences. The group also visit a variety of places that are of interest to Timebank members.

Timebanks trade in time credits rather than money. Timebank members can request help for a specific job and then pay for that help with time credits.

Timebanks do not need direct trades to work because time credits earned are put in an account to be spent when needed. Working bees to get big jobs done are a great way of harnessing the energy of a Timebank and provides an

opportunity for people to meet.

Organisations and schools can also be Timebank members and can pay their volunteers with credits.

Timebanks recognise that all members of a community have skills to contribute, and that the overall community is strengthened when neighbours help one another.

In fast-growing communities, such as many of the towns in the Selwyn area, newcomers may not easily meet other residents. For established residents traditional networks may break down as grown up children settle elsewhere and neighbours commute into town to work. The Selwyn Timebank provides a new way of forming networks and meeting other people in the

community.

Selwyn District covers a large area and has many unique communities within it. While this Timebank aims to serve the whole of the Selwyn District they acknowledge that most people would rather trade within their own community. As a Selwyn Timebank member you can search within your own neighbourhood (for example, Rolleston, Darfield etc) or search across the whole district.

For more information see advertisement in this issue or email Fiona at selwyntimebank@gmail.com. You can also find them on Facebook (they are on a number of community pages) and Neighbourly.

ROLLESTON MEN’S SHED

It has been busy as usual at the Rolleston Men’s Shed. Chairs and more chairs have needed repair work. Broken bits or simply glued joints that needed regluing. A lounge chair had its leg repaired also. Two garden benches were stripped down, and the metal

end had the rust removed and have been painted. The wooden slats were stripped and cleaned before varnishing. Many garden chairs have been brought in, some with snapped timber and the rest needing the metalwork cleaned up and fixed. A donated domino set had some

pieces missing. They have been replaced and a box was made before donating it to Rolleston School.

A donated vice was stripped down and refurbished, and an exhaust extension has been made for a Shed member's motorhome.

Feel free to drop by for a yarn!

The Shed, situated at 54 Dynes Road, Rolleston is open Saturday, Monday and Wednesday mornings. Visit the website for further information: rolleston.wordpress.com

ROLLESTON FIRE BRIGADE UPDATE

Well, we're officially halfway through 2023! The shortest day has come and gone, and now we can look forward to summer.

The Rolleston Fire Brigade has been busy, and as of 9am on Tuesday, June 27th June, they had attended 291 incidents for the year.

Now that winter is here if you have a fireplace make sure the chimney is clean and remember to allow hot ashes to go cold before discarding them. Check your guttering is clear of leaves and debris.

Allow yourself a little extra time when on the roads and drive to the conditions! Turn your headlights on in low light conditions, this helps others to see you.

Recently, the Rolleston Brigade was nominated for a Volunteer Recognition Award with Volunteering Canterbury. Congratulations to the Brigade for receiving this Award. All Brigade members put in a lot of time and effort, and are extremely well supported by their families, which allows them to help the community.

Over the past few months, we’ve had Brigade members away on various courses, including Rural Fire behaviour, Qualified Firefighter Courses, Senior Firefighter Course, Medical Courses and more. These courses are on top of the normal weekly training members attend. Over the next five months, we will have more Brigade members

away on courses to upskill themselves.

Some of these courses will include Fire Appliance pump operation and Emergency Response driving, Qualified Firefighter Course, Station Officer Course, Medical recertification at First Aid level and First Responder level. At the beginning of May, two members travelled to Wellington to compete in the National Firefighter Challenge.

Nathan represented Rolleston and Chris represented Christchurch Airport. Both of these guys put in a lot of time preparing for this! They don't call it the toughest two minutes, in sport, for no reason! The challenge consisted of:

• Climbing a six storey tower while carrying an 18kg hose pack

• Then at the top, hauling up another 18kg hose by rope up the six storeys

• Down the six storeys, to jump on the forcible entry machine and hit a 70kg beam

1.5metres

• Run a 30 metre slalom course, grab a charge hose and drag it back 30 metres and hit a target

• To finish, drag a 80kg dummy 30 metres to the finish line! This is all completed in a full firefighting kit, including a breathing apparatus set and on air.

Nathan completed the course in 2 minutes and Chris in 2 minutes and 19 seconds, which was good enough to win Rookie of the Year.

The fastest competitors run the track in 1 minute and 37 seconds!

Stay warm and look out for each other.

SCCCT UPDATE

Selwyn Central Community Care (SCCCT) recently held its AGM, and Chairperson Olive Webb was able to report a successful year. Much of the success has been due to the wonderful service given by volunteer drivers. As more and more people become aware of what SCCCT offer in the way of transport, visiting, shopping and caring for the elderly or housebound people in the district, they have started receiving calls from Templeton, Lincoln and Southbridge.

The van trips are still very sought after, and even though the weather has not been kind SCCCT have ventured out for half day, full day and overnight trips. This is only possible because of their volunteer drivers, who give their time generously. All drivers have undergone police vetting and have clean licenses. SCCCT’s Board remains the same, and they welcome Averil on board as Secretary, which is a huge relief for Yvonne, who steps back from that role but remains as Coordinator.

The Trust has been humbled after being nominated for the Selwyn Awards, and is looking forward to attending the gala dinner.

SCCCT contacts remain the same: Yvonne 021 313 1122 (for transport and general enquiries) and Ross 027 433 4767 (for van trips). The Trust also sells lovely leather shoes. Contact Yvonne or see the Trust at local markets.

NEW RETAIL STORE

Hato Hone St. John has opened a new retail store in Rolleston. The store is located at Shop 4, 57 Tennyson Street. The official opening took place on Saturday, July 1st, with new Store Manager Deb cutting the ribbon. The store is selling a range of quality used clothing for the family, footwear and accessories, plus a range of bric-a-brac, for every use. So pop along to grab those essential items or to have

a look at what’s on offer. If you have any items you may wish to donate, take them along to the shop on weekdays between 10am - 4pm, and they will happily rehome these for you.

Thinking of volunteering for Hato Hone St. John? Pop into the store and have a chat with Store Manager Deb, or you can follow the online application process by visiting: join.stjohn.org.nz and

apply for job #47316.

Over the past few years, Hato Hone St. John have been gradually adopting ‘Hato Hone’ in their name and logo. The name was not gifted by iwi - it is a literal translation of Saint John to Hato Hone. The name and logo will be applied to new items only. So effectively it has been a cost-neutral exercise for St. John.

FIXED COSTS VS DISCRETIONARY

When you apply for a housing loan, the bank or your adviser will analyse your spending habits and regular payments.

There is the ‘discretionary spending’ that you can reduce or stop altogether, such as takeaways, entertainment etc, and there are the ‘fixed costs’, which will carry on once you have a loan.

The fixed costs include rates, insurance, basic food costs and of course the mortgage payments, and anything else that will

continue after you have your loan, like transport costs and hobbies.

It is really important that you do a realistic budget so that there are no surprises when it comes to living with a mortgage. Be honest with yourselves. If you have hobbies that you are not prepared to give up, then factor the costs in. The math's is simple - income must exceed expenses, with allowances for an increase in costs. If it is tight, then you need to make changes to either income or expenses to make it all work.

When considering where to buy a home, do you buy a house close to where you work to reduce transport costs or get another job close to your new home that hopefully pays better. Are schools a consideration, or access to other services you require.

Once again, it all comes down to the simple equation - income has to exceed outgoings, so make a budget!

See advertisement alongside for contact details.

NICOLA GRIGG - OPINION PIECE

If you feel anxious while you wait for the total at the supermarket checkout, if you dread the two days before payday because there’s so little money left in your account, if you’ve had to give up on your plan to buy a home, then know this: you are not alone. Even Kiwis who are doing everything right, who are working hard and being incredibly careful are struggling. You are struggling because the economy is failing you.

The cost-of-living crisis is dragging into its third year. Economic mismanagement has driven New Zealand into recession, while Australia, the US and our Asian neighbours are growing.

New Zealand’s current accountthe difference between what we spend in the world and what we earn in the world - has hit a record -breaking deficit.

Interest rates have risen so fast that a ticking time bomb lies in front of us. In the months ahead, hundreds of thousands of mortgage holders will have to move off a home loan with a 2 or 3 percent interest rate to a loan with 6 or 7 percent interest. Many homeowners will be left scrambling for the hundreds of extra dollars they will need to make their mortgage payments each fortnight.

When that mortgage bomb goes off, the whole economy will shudder.

The Government books are loaded up with debt, with net debt up from under $6 billion prepandemic to around $71 billion today.

The great shame is that there’s so little to show for this increased debt - instead, we have potholes all over the roads, declining school

attendance and achievement, growing health waiting lists and escalating violent crime.

Billions of dollars have been wasted on consultants, centralisation and ideological projects instead of bolstering the frontline services we need, like more nurses, doctors and midwives and ensuring our kids are taught the basics.

It’s time for the excuses to stop.

New Zealand needs solutions to fix our broken economy and help you get ahead once more. Most of all, what our country needs right now is hope. That’s what National will deliver.

Other Parties might like to tell you they can fix New Zealand’s problems by robbing Peter to pay Paul. That they will drag the bottom up by tearing the top down. Or that we’ll all feel better if they punish the wealthy hard enough.

The truth is those reckless tactics would only further weaken our fragile economy, scare our best and brightest away and divide us one against the other.

National has a better way.

We know that only a strong economy can fix the cost-of-living

crisis, lift incomes and fund the world-class public services Kiwis deserve.

National understands that a strong economy is created through the efforts of everyday New Zealanders choosing to work here, to create new jobs here, to start a new business, to take a product global or to create something new. We know that success is good for the country, it’s good for the Government, and it’s good for every New Zealander. This election, the choice is clear.

PROBUS BIRTHDAY MEETING

The June meeting of Rolleston Probus was their Birthday Meeting. They celebrate this every June and ask the ladies and men to dress up for the occasion! It was great to see numerous fancy hats and decorative ties. After an enjoyable special morning tea, President, Ann Barber and Betty Healey, one of their longest serving members cut the birthday cake. The Group were then entertained by Gill Atkins who read poetry from Pam Ayers . Gill is a friend of Pam’s and had everyone laughing at her impressive imitations of Pam and her poetry. Pam is still writing and entertaining, and many have books of her poetry so it was a really enjoyable time. Probus are still welcoming new members and were really pleased to have three enrolled last month. Their next outing is to

the movies at Silky Otter later in the month and next month they have their mid-winter lunch at Tai Tapu Hotel. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month in the Rolleston Community Centre from 9.45am until noon.

Please contact President, Ann Barber on 027 588 503 if you are interested in attending a meeting. People are always made very welcome.

PLAYWRIGHT READING

From Page to Stage - A Script Development Project

A local playwright is excited to be bringing a public reading of her new adult comedy to the Selwyn community.

‘Silver Service’ is written by Marilyn Ollett, who is an actor / director / playwright, funeral celebrant and Clown Doctor, who is passionate about making quality theatre accessible to the community. She has had a long association with community theatre groups in Canterbury and is currently directing Calendar Girls for Centre Stage Rolleston, after directing Blackadder 2 for them in 2021.

With so few plays with good roles for older actors, Marilyn decided to write one herself.

After a two year ‘gestation period’, funding by Selwyn Creative Communities has enabled Marilyn to complete her ‘Silver Service’ script. Without giving the plot away, the play revolves around four women of a 'certain age' who come up with a rather unexpected way to increase their income.

This will be the first rehearsed reading of new work outside of the Court Theatre, and the first in Selwyn.

A rehearsed reading in front of a live audience is the final - and essential - stage of script development prior to submitting for publication. It allows the playwright to gauge the audience's reaction and identify what really works and what may

need to be tweaked. From an audience perspective, a rehearsed play reading is akin to listening to a radio play

‘Silver Service’ is being directed by an experienced Rollestonbased director and features three very talented Selwyn actors.

Anyone with an interest in theatre or the script development process, or those who just want a fun night out, are welcome to attend the reading, which will be held at 6pm on Saturday, July 22nd, at Clearview School, Rolleston. This event is rated R16. Entry is free, but seats are limited, and bookings are essential.

To book your seat and for any further information, please contact Marilyn on mazollett@gmail.com

PATHWAYS

What have Pathways been doing since they began, and why did they start?

The Pathways Group knew of people who were very concerned about not being able to remember names, appointments, where they put things etc.

One of the first things they did was reassure people that they didn’t keep forgetting, for example, where they parked the car. They had never really paid attention, to begin with. The next thing to reassure them was that our brain keeps making new ‘pathways’ until we die. Every time we have a ‘unique new thought’ we make new connections between neurons in our brains, (we have approximately eighty six billion neurons.)

The keywords appear to be

‘variety of activity’, and that is what Pathways have been doing over the past few weeks. They have been singing new songs, memorising and reciting scripture and poems like ‘The Owl and the Pussy Cat’. They have also been doing mental agility exercises, playing physical games and improvisation, as developing your imagination is very important. (Note: people with the best memories have the best imaginations).

Add in a bit of competition, a bit of skiting and it all makes for a lot of fun.

The most rewarding feedback the group has received is, “This is just what I needed.”

The Group is an outreach from the Cornerstone Church and meets on Thursdays between 1pm-2pm at the Rolleston Community Centre Lounge. It is free to attend. If you would like to find out further information contact the Pathways Coordinator, Michele Giles on 318 8963 or 027 347 2962.

It’s with the help of the facilitators, who are also local business owners, that the group supports their members and the wider business community. The facilitators live local to their groups, which gives them a unique stand in seeing and supporting those in their local community thrive.

Facilitators, Ann-Maree Ozanne

To do this they both wanted to give back to the business community by facilitating business networking groups to bring local businesspeople together. These supportive meetings allow people to make genuine connections, celebrate successes together and move through any challenges with the help of their colleagues within a positive culture allowing

The groups have people from many industries that come together. Those working from home comment on how the group becomes their local whanau, giving them a sense of belonging and a place to enjoy the company of others.

Things You Say A er 50 or maybe even 40!:

• Where did I put my phone?

• How did I get that bruise?

• How do they expect you to read that small print?

• Where are my glasses?

• I don't care if it doesn't look fashionable, it's comfortable!

• Who the heck is calling at 9pm?

Nephew: Thanks for that harmonica you gave me - it's the best birthday present ever!

Uncle: Well, that's great! What songs can you play?

Nephew: Oh, I don't play it. Mom gives me a dollar a day not to play it during the day and Dad gives me five dollars a week not to play it at night.
