It's not long until local performers Nicole Schaap and Sean Bennett head to Los Angeles to represent New Zealand at the World Championship of Performing Arts.
Nicole will be singing in five categories - Original Song, Open Category, Pop, Soul and Rock.
The New Zealand Black Star Team head to the States on Monday, July 24th, for two weeks. Sixty-seventy countries are competing over the
week, with various ages and performing categories.
Nicole said, “The support from the community, her family and friends has been amazing, and she would like to thank them all so much. Her fundraising goal was $7,500, and she has achieved this over the past eight months through gigging, busking, her give-a-little page, raffles and hosting a local music festival, which about two hundred people attended.
L-R:HamishEllisonguitar,NicoleondrumsandvocalsandJoshFairlessonbass. way,” Nicole concluded. Nicole has been training and preparing with her vocal coach and mentor Sacha Vee, at SOLE Music Academy. The contestants have sixty seconds per category to win the judges over, and each category requires a different outfit to suit. She is aiming to bring home some gold medals but is super happy she gets the opportunity to take part in this amazing competition. Nicole will be joined by her Mum Sally as a supporter.
“A very special thanks to Mum
and Dad for their huge effort and support, Duncan Sole (Ministry of the Mind Music) for his continuous support and donations, Phil Dean from Robert Harris Rolleston for hosting a fundraiser show in November last year, Ray White Rolleston for the donation and use of their BBQ and tent for the fundraiser music festival, the Rolleston Lions Club and the Selwyn District Council for their generous donations, Christine Booth for helping run the thermomix raffle, other local businesses and the amazing bands that gave their time and talent at the Moonstock Fundraiser Music Festival. ROLLESTON MEN’S SHED UPDATE
The Rolleston Men’s Shed has had sound dampening panels installed in the tearoom and workshops due to it being very noisy and hard to hear. This is making a big difference to the enjoyment of the yarns over the morning cuppa which is the most important part of the Group. A member with a motorhome needed ramps constructed, with a bit of metal bending in the press, it is coming together. As usual, a range of items have been worked on, including chairs and tables being dismantled,
fixed and then reassembled and oiled or painted. One large item is a red biplane, similar to a Fokker D7, which was donated and has been restored. This is big enough for two children to sit in, though not fly, and will go to a preschool to be enjoyed.
A Ceremonial Shovel for Burnham Army Camp was polished and had a handle fitted. This will be used for turning the first sod prior to the start of new projects.
More computers have arrived for upgrading and re-issuing. An
angle grinder given to the Shed had a faulty switch, we removed the sliver of wood in the switch, reassemble it and now it’s a useful tool.
Recently, the Council trimmed trees in Foster Park. The timber was offered to the Shed’s wood turning section.
Feel free to drop by for a yarn!
The Shed, situated at 54 Dynes Road, Rolleston is open Saturday, Monday and Wednesday mornings. Visit our website for further information: rolleston.wordpress.com

GET CREATIVE ABOUT WASTE
Lincoln Envirotown Trust is encouraging creative school students to think about waste differently and enter the Selwyn Waste Art Competition.
The Competition is open to all students in Year 7 or above attending Selwyn schools or being home schooled in the district.
The art pieces must be assembled or constructed from previously used materials that otherwise would have likely gone to landfill. The artwork is aimed at making people reconsider their views on rubbish and reusing. All entrants receive a prize, with special prizes
awarded for age category winners, as well as an overall prize.
The presentation of awards will take place in Te Ara Ātea, Rolleston on the weekend of 26th and 27th August, and the art will be exhibited at the venue during this period. This is the perfect venue, and Lincoln Envirotown are very grateful to the Selwyn District Council’s Community and Learning team who invited us to enjoy the use of this space again. The response to this recently introduced project has been overwhelming. In 2021, there were twenty two entries, and
last year there were thirty four pieces of art presented. The judges from the Youth Council, along with a local artist and library team member were hugely impressed with the high standard of work.
We hope to see many interested young artists again this year. Schools have been provided with details, but an information pack can also be obtained by emailing or phoning Dave Fitzjohn.

EXCITING OPPORTUNITY
continuedfromfrontpage...
Sean has been accepted in the Solo Singing category with his lovely, deep voice.
Sean has performed as a lead
singer in productions at Rolleston College, been part of the Selwyn Community Choir for the last six years and has performed on many other stages. He has had singing lessons for the last three to four years and has shown quite a range in his voice. Unfortunately, there is no funding that comes with this opportunity, so Sean has to raise approximately $10,000 for his airfare, entrance fees, etc. A give -a-little page has been set-up, and he has also been selling chocolate bars, pot plants and kindling. Due to Sean being
under eighteen years old, he has to be accompanied by a chaperone, meaning one of his biggest supporters, mum Amanda will travel with him, costing close to another $8,000. These opportunities do not come around often, so Sean is super keen to raise the funds which will allow him to represent New Zealand. Whilst performing at the Championship, talent scouts attend choosing contestants for students who show talent in their class.
If you can help with any donations or assistance, please visit the give-a-little page: givealittle.co.nz/cause/wcopahere-i-come or phone 027 430 3076. Wherewouldwebewithoutourvolunteers?
SCCCT UPDATE
This is the time of the year when we look back at what we have achieved and look forward to our future needs. It is obvious that the need for Selwyn Central Community Care Trust’s assistance in the community is growing. More and more requests come in for assistance with transport, appointments, Meals on Wheels, shopping and our very popular van trips. We are now receiving requests from Templeton and Burnham, and the growth of Rolleston towards Selwyn Road has to be seen to be believed.
Because we are heading into winter this month, we are making a few changes with van trips and will be concentrating more on half-day trips leaving around 10.30am - 11am and returning around 3.30pm, before it starts to get cold and dark. All our drivers take health and safety very seriously and will be extra vigilant in checking road conditions before setting off on any adventures.
Over the last couple of months, there have been overnight trips, and we hope to continue these in the spring. This is a big task to organise, and we are very fortunate to have Ross Seddon, with his local knowledge and new found expertise as a tour guide! Trips so far have included Oamaru, Hokitika and Reefton. Passengers pay for their own accommodation and food, as well as the koha for the van expenses. The whole trip is
coordinated by the volunteer driver.
As we reach out to more and more people, we will be needing new volunteers to step up and help. More drivers are essential to help share the load, even if only for one or two days a week or for Meals on Wheels. If you don’t feel confident driving, we would welcome some new Board members. If you are keen on joining us, give Yvonne a call on 021 460 347 or Olive on 021 225 6633. If you are interested in driving the van (ten-seater, no passenger licence required) contact Ross on 027 433 4767. We aim to provide a top service for our valued older citizens, but where would we be without volunteers?
To quote the inimitable Bradley Walsh, “Come on and give it a go!”

DC INSTALLATION SERVICES
As temperatures drop and winter approaches, we’re all looking for ways to heat our home efficiently without spending a fortune on energy bills. This is where a ducted central heat pump system comes in.
The Mitsubishi Electric ducted heat pump system is an excellent choice for those looking to achieve whole-home comfort with energy-saving efficiency. Maintain consistent temperatures in your home throughout the entire year by simply selecting your preferred temperature in each area and let the advanced features of the system take care of the rest. You’ll have the flexibility of having total control over the comfort of your home. By setting specific temperatures
for each area of your home, you can keep bedrooms set to your perfect sleeping temperature while providing cosy comfort in the living areas. Additionally, ducted systems are incredibly discreet, with the main operating unit hidden in the ceiling, resulting in an exceptionally quiet operation.
To further increase energy savings and provide much needed ventilation to your home, integrate your ducted heat pump system with Lossnay fresh air ventilation.
Lossnay is essential for maintaining good air quality and removes stale air, allergens and pollutants linked to headaches and allergies. Proper ventilation will also control moisture to prevent crying windows and the
growth of mould and mildew in your home. Lossnay also keeps the energy bills low as it recovers energy from the stale air within your home to pre-heat or pre-cool incoming fresh air, reducing the amount of additional heating or cooling required.
If you’re looking to achieve whole-home comfort, give the team at DC Installation Services a call for your free in-home consultation. Their team of experts will assess your home and recommend the best heating solution based on your specific requirements. They are Canterbury’s residential heat pump specialists.

NICOLA GRIGG - OPINION PIECE
Budget 2023 shows why New Zealand needs a change of direction and a change of Government this year. Finance Minister Grant Robertson promised a bread-and -butter Budget. What he delivered was a spending spree creating a massive increase in deficits and debt climbing for years to come.
This is the blowout Budget, the culmination of Grant Robertson’s massive spending spree as Finance Minister for six years. Mr Robertson has blown his own spending limits for the sixth Budget in a row.
The deficit has blown out to $7.6 billion - a whopping $7.1 billion increase. The return to surplus has been delayed.
Operating spending has blown out to $137 billion this year, up $61 billion since Labour entered office.
Debt has blown out to $95 billion by 2026.
Kiwis are already paying the price for Mr Robertson’s addiction to spending - and now Treasury confirms Mr Robertson’s
spending will mean interest rates are higher for longer, meaning Kiwis will pay for years to come when they refix their mortgages.
Mr Robertson should have adjusted tax brackets for inflation to provide relief for hard-working Kiwis. But yet again, Labour has refused to do the right thing - instead deciding that they can spend taxpayers’ money better than Kiwis.
New Zealanders hoped for some relief from the tough conditions that Labour’s economic mismanagement has produced. What they will get is cheaper bus rides for those who qualify, but still nothing for the majority of hard-working New Zealanders.
National knows we need to fix the economy to lift incomes and afford the public services Kiwis deserve - but Labour’s only plan is to spend.
A National Government will fix the economy, end wasteful spending and deliver meaningful tax relief for hard-working Kiwis. The economic fix has to be based
on productive growth, and the good news is that New Zealand has no shortage of amazing businesses and entrepreneurs. A National Government will be one of pro-growth, proinnovation and pro-investment because, ultimately, that will create a stronger economy and it’s a stronger economy that will deliver higher incomes and better public services for New Zealanders.

BANK STATEMENTS
What Your Bank Statements Say About You
Whenever you are looking for a loan, the banks will ask to see the latest three months bank statements (some banks like six months).
What they are looking for is a snapshot of how you conduct your accounts, what your spending habits are like, and whether these habits and behaviours are likely to change with the challenge of repaying a
mortgage.
For example, if every day you have outgoings to the TAB, they may conclude you have a gambling habit that may not change. Evidence of dining out six days a week, regular spending at the bar or liquor store etc are all red flags that the bank will consider when they assess your suitability for a mortgage.
Account conduct is a big issue for the banks, and any late
payments, unarranged overdrafts or dishonours are all likely to count against you when it comes to getting an approval.
If you are thinking about getting mortgage ready, make those bank statements great reading for the credit assessor to give yourself the best chance.

ROLLESTON & DISTRICT LIONS
May was a busy month for the Rolleston and District Lions Club. They were involved in several community events, including Relay for Life, support for our local schools, growing vegies for a roadside stall, painting a fence, collecting for Aviva, cooking sausages and chips for a local rugby club and attending training for incoming club officers. All of these activities form part of our service to the community.
Organisation is underway for the new Board for the 2023/24 Lions year, which begins at the start of
July. The Change of Officers function will be held at Quartz restaurant on Tuesday, July 4th, for the election of our new President and her team. Despite the auspicious date, we will not be wearing Stars and Stripes! However, we will be inducting some new members at that meeting which is always a thrill.
Past District Governor, Paul O’Connor will be the guest speaker for the evening, speaking about the new
Nationwide Lions fundraising campaign for a mobile melanoma testing programmeSouth Islanders have one of the highest rates of deadly melanoma in the world, and early detection will prevent that statistic from getting worse. How can you help? More information will be available when the campaign gets underway. Heather Power, Marketing and Publicity, Rolleston and Districts Lions.

ROLLESTON COMBINED PROBUS
Rolleston Combined Probus has had another very busy month in May. Shontal Howard from Selwyn District Council, spoke to them about the recreational needs of seniors and asked the group to give ideas about what else they would like to see available in the community. It was a very informative talk, with some good ideas from members. It is great to see that the Council are looking at what seniors in Selwyn are interested in.
The group's main speaker was Bernadette Devonport , a former history teacher who has written a book on ‘Old Rolleston’. She spoke about a chapter in the book relating to the years between 1990 and 2000. It was a very informative talk, and her wish is that she is
able to get this book published even if only online. She is very passionate about the history of Rolleston and doesn’t want it to be lost.
Some members who have lived in the area since Rolleston was first developed bought along photos of the original development.
The group visited the Lincoln University Art Collection on May 23rd and enjoyed lunch afterwards.
The group welcomed three visitors this month and looks forward to having more members join them.
If you are interested in coming to a meeting you are more than welcome. The group meets on the second Tuesday of the month in the Rolleston
ECAN UPDATE
ILLEGAL DUMPING
Illegal dumping is rife across the region, and it’s not just the inorganic items that are putting our flood protection, biodiversity and water health at risk.
With many people taking the recent long weekends to maintain their gardens, there's often an increase in green waste making its way into local waterways. At this time of year, it’s more important than ever that we ensure the waterways and the structures within them are able to do the job they’re designed to do and that means keeping them clear and unobstructed. Green waste can lead to blocked culverts, floodgates and other critical infrastructure, preventing stormwater from draining away.
It’s not just green waste that is a problem when it makes its way to our waterways. Inorganic items which do not break down are increasingly being discovered illegally dumped in our riverbeds regionwide. Not only can these items be a health and safety issue for members of the public, animals and those having to remove the rubbish, but having these items removed appropriately also comes with a cost to ratepayers.
If you see suspicious activity or rubbish being dumped in a riverbed, please note the details of the vehicle and location, and report it to ECan’s Incident Reporting Line on 0800 765 588 or by using the Snap Send Solve app (for Apple or Android) or online reporting tool.

GREAT RESULT
Rolleston-based Ewan Bawden, was fortunate to be invited to the 2023 International Shooting Sport Association (ISSF) Down The Line (DTL) Oceania Shooting Championships, which took place in Auckland at the end of April. The team consisted of six juniors under the age of twenty one, one of whom was Ewan’s Lincoln High School teammate Henry Wesley. The team comprised of three people at the Championships, with the others shooting individually.
“Norfolk Island, Niue Island, Samoa, Tahiti and New Caledonia were our opponents. I met a lot of lovely people and made new friends, which improved the overall experience,” commented Ewan.
“The Competition lasted three days. The first day was the Single Rise event, and I was assigned to a three-person team and placed second.
“The second day was dedicated to the Single Barrel competition, which saw me shoot as an individual, and I placed first junior,” Ewan added proudly.
“Day three was Point Score, and I was once again shooting as an individual. I finished third junior in this event. I am extremely delighted to have been able to
participate, and coming home with three medals was a bonus.
“I learnt a lot about how other countries have different rules than to how we run our competitions. It was intriguing to see how they arrived and simply got on with the competition, attempting not to become confused by the varying rules. As a result of this experience, I am more aware that paying attention is vital for keeping focused,” Ewan added.
“I was having a terrible run throughout the Point Score event and had two bad rounds out of three. I kept my focus and fought through my disappointment to pull off a
fantastic fourth round, which meant I finished third, and I know I can never give up trying. My perseverance paid off, but I must thank my mother Maxine, Henry’s dad Cary Wesley and Henry’s mum Maree Whiteley for their encouragement and support during the tournament. We couldn't accomplish any of these tournaments without the assistance of our parents.
“A huge thank you to Adrienne Goodeve from Bayleys Darfield, the Selwyn Lions, and everyone from the give-a-little page who sponsored me, which I am very grateful for. Thank you, also to everyone who has assisted me in my journey,” Ewan concluded.
BUILDING APPLICATIONS
Change is coming for those who are applying for a consent to build on land that is still going through subdivision consent process. From June 6th, people building on newly subdivided land will be able to apply for a building consent only after the developer has received the Council’s final approval that any of the
outstanding conditions of their subdivision resource consent have been complied with. The latter is known as ‘section 224(c) certificate’.
“We are changing the process to ensure all the subdivision consent requirements, in particular in regards to mitigating any natural hazards, are met before the building consent is issued,” commented Tim Harris, Selwyn District Council Group Manager Development and Growth.
“Processing a subdivision consent is a complex matter that requires the Council to make a number of significant decisions, in particular in regards to what natural hazards, such as flooding, may affect the land, how the subdivision may impact surrounding land and infrastructure, and how all of this should be mitigated,” Tim added. Following on from the cyclone Gabrielle and the general
increased frequency of severe weather and flooding events due to climate change, there is heightened concern about building on flood-prone land.
“We are also seeing an increase in the number of subdivisions occurring in areas affected by natural hazards. Our Council has decided to help address this by changing its approach to managing consents. A number of other councils are already doing this, so it’s not new,” continued Tim.
“It is also about providing certainty to landowners of any conditions and requirements on building on the land that may be imposed as part of the subdivision process,” Tim concluded.
There will be some exceptions on a case-by-case basis, conditional on early engagement between the developers and the Council’s building, planning and infrastructure teams reaching agreement on specific conditions.

Members of the Selwyn Swim Club team were away last month racing at the Apollo Projects Division II competition, in Wellington. This is a week long competition that sees swimmers from all over New Zealand attend to compete at this national level meet.
The team of thirteen swimmers who attended, are trained by Submerge Aquatics Head Coach
Ben Close and Assistant Coach Hannah Bates . The team finished with multiple personal best times, qualifying times for the next level of national meets, and podium places achieved. The team reached new limits and set new records, finishing third overall on the points table out of the seventy three scoring teams. The highest team placing achieved at a national meet for the Selwyn Swim Club in their nine year history. They also gained gold medal podium finishes in three women’s relay events - a gold medal trifecta that has never been achieved by the Club before.
Assistant Coach Hannah Bates, attended the meet with the team commenting, “During the competition the team learnt more and more about themselves and how they can race consistently and to a high
standard. The team competing at this meet have stand-out skills in the water but also out of it. They are doing a fantastic job of warming up and warming down as a team, and they have got their dryland dialled in!
“We emphasised resting early in the meet, and this showed as the energy levels stayed high, even halfway through the meet. When we train at home we emphasise these skills, and this group have really nailed it, and I believe that this is a part of the reason for their continued success,” Hannah concluded.

SELWYN ART SHOW
The 2023, Selwyn Art Show was, once again, another huge success, which saw over eighty artist entries from all over the Selwyn District and the wider Canterbury area. This was the 21st year of this annual exhibition and the Show continues to grow in popularity and size. The event was held at the Rolleston Community Centre stadium, which was filled with a wide range of artistic mediums, including sculpture, painting, printmaking, photography, ceramics, fused glass and fibre crafts.
The Show opened on the evening of Friday, May 26th, with an address by Margaret White, Chairperson of Arts Heart Selwyn Central Arts Council. She spoke of the way the Show has risen to meet the needs of a growing number of artists residing in our district.
“The event celebrated the milestones of the past as well as looking forward to the opportunities for the future,” commented Margaret.
The opening evening was also
complemented by wonderful mellow jazz, provided by local musician Stephanie McEwin
A popular section of the Show, over the weekend, was the High School Showcase. This year featured work by Year 11 students from Ellesmere College, including beautifully rendered self-portraits in pencil, and a fun, eclectic mix of colourful artwork by students from Waitaha School.
Two awards were presented at the conclusion of the Art Show, with recipients receiving vouchers to spend on new art supplies from The Drawing Room. The People’s Choice Award went to Gabriel Bosman of Southbridge for his creative steel sculptures. The Youth Artist Award was presented jointly this year to Olivia Cassie of Rolleston for her watercolour landscape paintings and to Aleks Bryant of West Melton for his carefully rendered and detailed felt pen artwork.
The Arts Heart Selwyn Central Arts Council, were pleased with the high attendance of local art
lovers over the weekend and the number of artworks that found new forever homes. The aim of the event was to celebrate and support the arts in Selwyn, with the majority of the proceeds going back to the hardworking artists themselves and the remaining money used to cover the running costs of the event and fund art related workshops during the remainder of the year.
The future looks bright for the Selwyn Art Show, and Arts Heart expects the event will continue to grow and flourish. They believe that the Selwyn District is a great spot to be an artist, and the Show is an important celebration of the amazing artistic talent in our region.

“Nora,” she said to her veteran servant, “for the first half-hour I want you to stand at the drawing-room door and call the guests’ names as they arrive.”
Nora’s face lit up. “Thank you, ma’am,” she replied. “I’ve been wan ng to do that to some of your friends for the last 20 years.”

Pour a measure of whisky, gin or rum into a glass, then see if you can smell it. If you can, then drink it and if you can taste it it’s reasonable to assume you are currently free of the virus. I tested myself nine mes last night and was virus-free each me, thank goodness. I will test myself again today because I have developed a headache which can also be a symptom.
