On Sunday, August 18, 2025, Porters Alpine Resort came alive with excitement as it hosted the Year 1–6 & 7–8 Ski School Local Derby Championships. Young skiers from local schools took to the slopes with determination, ready to conquer a challenging open giant slalom course designed to test both skill and teamspirit. Each team, made up of four skiers, competed for podium positions in a format that emphasised consistency and
collaboration. Every participant completed two runs, with the three fastest times from each team combined to determine the final score. The team with the lowest total time emerged victorious, proving that teamwork was just as vital as speed.
The event was dedicated exclusively to alpine skiing, with only traditional ski gear permitted - no snowboards or telemark equipment allowedensuring fair and focused competition. The course itself

was crafted by Porters’ race coach and ski school sta , specifically tailored to suit primary-aged competitors. On race day, the setup was finetuned based on snow and weather conditionstoensurea fun, safe, and competitive experience.
A lively crowd of supporters
lined the course, cheering on the young athletes as they raced with passion and precision.Theatmospherewas electric, celebrating the spirit of youth racing and the next generation of alpine talent on theslopesofPorters.

WOMEN’S GRAVEL RIDE
If you’ve been meaning to get back on that bike and have a bit of fitness under your belt then the Women’s She eld Gravel Ride on this Sunday, August 31, could be just the thingtogetyoustarted.
The ride leaves from She eld School at 10am sharp and covers around 56km with just under 500m of climbing, taking in She eld, Whitecli s, Glentunnel, Hororata (café stop), and Coalgate, before returning to She eld to finish withpiesfortheprize.Theride is suitable for gravel, MTB, or e-bikes.
Organiser Emma-Jane Lambie says the ride is aimed at women of all levels. “From thosenewtogravelthroughto more experienced riders who wanttocomealongforasocial spin. It’s a social-paced, nocost ride except if people wish to buy food at our cafe stops and we make sure no one gets leftbehind.”
Emma-Jane is the female riders’ captain for the North
Canterbury Cycling Club. She organises regular women’s rides, which can be anything from gravel to single track.
“Sometimes we stay on our home turf, and other times we head further afield to bring in the wider community. This way, women who might not have people to ride with can join us, and we love to support local towns and businesses alongtheway.”
Shesaystheinspirationbehind the ride is to build confidence and community for women in cycling – making it fun, supportive, and welcoming, while also giving local ladies a chance to connect and explore

“For this ride, all that’s needed is a little bit of fitness, a spare tube, and the appropriate clothing – consider wearing bright clothing.Theseridesare weatherdependent.”
Emma-Jane is an endurance cyclist who has been through some hard times and understands the struggles women face when it comes to starting or getting back into activities.
“Because of that, I hope to show that it is possible to get out there, believe in yourself, and find strength through community.”

Back to Basics: A Smarter
Back to Basics: A Smarter Back to Basics: A Smarter Back to Basics: A Smarter Approach to Rates. Approach to Rates. Approach to Rates. Approach to Rates.
The number one issue in Selwyn today is skyrocketing rates. Families are stretched, retirees are cutting back, and small businesses are being squeezed, all while council charges ahead as if money growsontrees.
If elected, I’ll put the brakes on. First, I’ll cut the fat: stop wasteful spending and scrap projects that don’t deliver real
value. Second, I’ll open the books. No more backroom deals or confusing jargonratepayers deserve clear, honest explanations for every dollarspent.
Third, I’ll get the council back to its core job: fixing roads, maintaining water and wastewater systems, and keeping rubbish services reliable. Until the economy improves, we must focus on whattrulymatters,not“nice-to -haves” that push rates even higher.
Isupportaratescap. I’velived through hardshipand I know it’spossibletolivewithinyour means, it just takes discipline. Councilmustdothesame.
To start, I propose freezing rates for a year while we conduct a zero-based budget review. No automatic increases. Every cost must be justified from scratch. This is howweexposewaste, cutflu , andrestoretrust.

I am standing again for the regional council, having served two terms as your councillor. Over this time, I have led the council’s work on river management and resilience. We have begun shifting to a whole-of-catchment approach, enabling our rivers teams to plan, design, and build strongerprotectionfromfloods in our changing communities. This is a vital core service, and I am proud of the leadership I haveprovided.
In Selwyn, the catchment blueprint is nearing completion. Once finalised, it will allow priorities to be set and work to move from planning into practical implementation. At the same time, I have consistently argued that the council must better manage funding to reduce pressure on ratepayers. Rates can be curbed by cutting programmes that deliver little value and by becoming more e cient in how money is spent. While progress is being made, I remain firm that
funding should not go to initiatives such as the youth wingoftheGreenParty.
We are also exploring new ways of achieving community goals, such as a private provider supplementing bus services between Rolleston and Christchurch. I believe council must focus on its core functions, spend responsibly, and deliver results. I am committed to continuing that workonyourbehalf.

DARFIELD GUN CLUB REPORT
By Bevan Brown, Bevan Brown, Shoot Secretary. Shoot Secretary.
Another August and a date withtheBodkinShieldeventin Central Otago. The three days atthethreemaingunclubsare always a challenge and this year wewereabletoentertwo teams of six for the main event.
Day one: Moa Creek Gun Club – the weather was calm and clear with a cold breeze later in the day. A steady start for most of the team although a momentary lapse caused by a distraction led to a target called with no ammo in the gun. Josh Jackson led the way with possibles in the first two events with Steve Gawn followingsuit ineventtwoand three. Unfortunately, a short, shoot-o saw an early exit. So, a good start to the campaign

with three other possibles for theteamaswell.
Daytwo:AlexandraGunClub–another three 20 target shoots and an extra 15 target Bodkin Match o 15 metres. The weather was clear but a bit dull with a gusty Norwest coming over the top. A lower scoring day with only Bevan Brown scoring possibles in

A STRONGER RETIREMENT STARTS WITH SMART KIWISAVER CHOICES:
The earlier you take control of your KiwiSaver, the greater the impact on your reDrement. Small adjustments now can make a significant difference later.
• Start early: Every dollar invested has more !me to grow. Thanks to compounding returns, consistent contribu!ons over decades can mul!ply far beyond what you’ve put in.
• Choose the right fund: The fund you’re in determines how your money is invested. For example, growth funds may offer higher long-term returns but with more ups and downs, while conserva!ve funds focus on stability. Aligning your fund with your age and goals is essen!al.
• Review regularly: Your circumstances change over !me — career, income, family needs. Reviewing your KiwiSaver ensures your investment strategy s!ll matches your stage of life
• Maximise contribu!ons: Even a small increase, like contribu!ng 4% instead of 3%, can add tens of thousands to your re!rement balance by age 65. Government contribu!ons and employer contribu!ons also boost your savings.
• Seek advice: An adviser can check if you’re on the right track, suggest adjustments, and give you peace of mind that your re!rement savings are working as hard as possible for you.
Your future lifestyle depends on the steps you take today. Structuring your KiwiSaver wisely puts you in control.
Ben Kahu is a KiwiSaver Advisor based in the area who can help you with all your KiwiSaver questions.

eventoneandfour. Agooddaytodothiswithhigh shooter numbers with low possible numbers giving higher sweep payouts. On with the Bodkin and disaster took its toll with neither team having a possible scored. Brodie Mangels and Bevan were closest for the A team, while dropping a target each for 14/15 and Marcel Van Leeuwen top scored with 13/15 for the B team. The usually reliable Dave Folley wasasurprisewithjust11and Ross Millichamp a low of six. Scores of 78 and 62 meant both teams were consigned to the “also attended” for the Bodkin and we could only watch as Southland No 2 team won with two targets down on 88/90.
DayThree:WanakaGunClub–lastchancewiththreemore20 target shoots. No sun on the targets, due to heavy cloud, made them hard to see but bettertargetsettinghelpedfor some. Dave Folley and Brodie Mangels lead the way with 60/60withSteveGawnbackin with 40/40 in events two and three while Duncan Je eris finally, after 6 scores of 19/20, scoredapossibleineventtwo. Shoot-o s proceeded with Steve piking out without a shot fired and Brodie not getting as far through as he would have liked. ‘Mr Smooth’ Dave Folley was another story however, taking out the day’s HOA Cup for the 60/60 and second prize in the 40/40 shoot-o . And that is now history, and wewaitagain‘tillnextyear.
A Grade shooters participated in the Bodkin Shield at the Alexandra Gun Club under clear blue skies.

Lesley Newtons spoke on “All About Orchids” at the August meeting.
Some interesting facts include: orchidsarethelargestgroupof flowering plants in the world, 30,000 species and 200,000 hybrids; they grow on all continents except Antarctica, Chinese 500BC grew for the flowers and perfume; Greeks andRomansthoughttheywere an aphrodisiac; Vanilla Orchid is grown for its perfume and flavour (makes vanilla essence); they are epiphytes (don’t grow in soil). Modern breeding and genetics have made them good house plants; water thoroughly, allow it to dry slightly, if waterlogged roots su ocate and die – they like temperature between 10-18C. Need to have a temperaturedropatnightof810C to initiate flower spikes; orchids like indirect light; they need over 50% humidity; fertilise autumn. Need calcium and magnesium; and pests and diseases include mealy bug, scale, slugs, snails, crown rot, fertilizer burn and cold damage.
Nicky Jenkins from Kakariki Kitchen spoke on making
condiments, chutney and dressings sourced from local produce. Nicky has always had an interest in food and the hospitality industry. She loves seasonal produce, locally sourced, freerangeandorganic where possible. Nicky trained as a chef in Sydney, and she enjoyed Italian and Mediterranean food and the exciting flavours from San Franisco. She also loves the changing food trends with the additionofspices. At the age of 48, Nicky was
diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease. It became apparent that cooking in a fast-paced restaurant was not practical, so she set up her business from herhomekitchen.

FOSTERING A LOVE FOR RUGBY
By Kyle Hughes, Selwyn
Rugby Club President.
By Kyle Hughes, Selwyn Rugby Club President.
Another Selwyn Rugby Club (SRFC) season has come to a close, and what a fantastic one
it's been. SRFC fielded eight junior teams from Year 1 through to Year 7/8, a testament to the club's strength and the passion for

rugbyinourcommunity.
Our focus isn't just on winning games; it’s about fostering a love for the sport and upholding the values that make it great. It was brilliant to see so many kids out there on the field, running hard, having a blast, and most importantly, showing great sportsmanship.

A young executive was leaving the office late one evening when he found the blonde CEO standing in front of a shredder with a piece of paper in his hand.
‘Listen,’ said the CEO, ‘this is a very sensitive and important document here, and my secretary has gone for the night. Can you make this thing work for me?’
‘Certainly,’ said the young executive. He turned the machine on, inserted the paper, and pressed the start button.
‘Excellent, excellent!’ said the CEO, as his paper disappeared inside the machine.
‘I just need one copy…’
