On Wednesday evening, March 19, the hearings panel met at the She eld Town Hall to deliberate on the submissions from the consultation to divest the land and asset of the She eld Memorial Pool to the community.

With members of the community in attendance, the hearings panel heard from the Council who provided context to the situation as well as information pertaining to risk, lability and the potential challenges of the transfer process.

Ultimately panel members were in favour of supporting the community in retaining

their facility and unanimously agreed to recommend that the land and asset be transferred to the legal entity (whether thatbetheKowaiPassReserve

Trust or provision for She eld Memorial Pool Working Group) and start negotiation for the transfer. This recommendation needs to be passed by full Councilonthe16thofApril.

The She eld Memorial Pool Working Group and the community alike are thrilled with the panel’s decision.

Saving this historical facility from demolition in a small ruralcommunityisahugewin.

The working group and community would like to thank Kowai Pass Reserve Trust for their part as the interim legal entity to help the community securethefutureofthepool.

Moving forward, the working group will begin to establish themselves as a legal entity as quickly as possible and assume negotiations with the Council for the transfer. There are some challenges that lay ahead including the length of

time it is likely to take to resolve issues with the land titles the pool occupies in order to complete the legal transfer. Another challenge is funding the refurbishment project of the facility, as it has been left to degrade by the Council in recent years and requires significant repairs to return ittoitsformercondition that will ensure it is a facility for the community to be proud ofnowandintothefuture.

The working group and community are under no illusion as to the challenges and volume of work ahead, however, all challenges have solutions, and the community has a very positive outlook for thefutureoftheirfacility.

AUTUMN AT TERRACE STATION

Terrace Station is opening its heritage garden on Sunday, March 30 from 11am to 3pm so visitors can view the autumn colours – late roses, woodland cyclamen, liriope, sternbergia, and colchicums. Leaves should still be clinging to the tall trees as there hasn’t beenadroughtthissummer. The Big Tree Walkway with its old established oaks and sequoias will doubtless attract, as well as a display of historic garden and farm tools and 19thcentury domestic items in theHutch, aconvertedsummer house. Acer maples, linden limes, holm oaks and cedars provide vital shade, and the many shrubs and flowers are a haven for birds and insects, which are sometimes sadly lacking in our modern farming environment. There will be activities for children, and visitors are invited to bring their picnics to enjoy on the lawns of the historic home.

There will be a small plant stall.

ART MEETS HISTORY ENJOYED BY ALL

A display of artworks created by artists from Art in the Garage Collective filled the Hororata Hall last Friday and Saturday.

Drinks and light food provided by the Hororata Historical Society (HHS) at the opening function was followed by a colourful presentation by Jenni Carter and Kate Foster about di erent historical aspects of thearea.

It was deemed “a most enjoyable evening in an ideal venue”.

A comment from Glenn Kimber on Saturday was, “What

Paintings of Hororata buildings have been gifted to the HHS

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY’S NEW WAIMARIE BUILDING

Wayne Lawson, a chartered engineer and project manager, gave an engaging presentation encompassing both the design development and subsequent construction of the Lincoln University’s new awardwinning Waimarie building, completedin2023.

He explained how the earthquake damage to two major buildings on campus, after the insurance claim was settled, lead to decisions to replacebothbuildings.

Waimarie (meaning bountiful lakes) is a 9,450m2 two and three level building, providing new teaching, research laboratory and o ce space, new public spaces for sta and students and visitors. The budget for this new building was over $91M. The building’s external façade incorporates masonry on the elevations facing Ivey Hall and a more utilitarian metal faced on the research block, complimented

bythePVpanelsunshading.

Wayne set out to show how such complex projects require extensive consultation with various groups in order to develop both the design requirements and complete the complex business cases needed to obtain government approval to proceed. He then went on to explain the construction process and unusual engineering and sustainability measures includedwithinthedesign.

The new building allowed the University to ‘walk-the talk’ and adopt a number of sustainability measures into the building in support of the NZ agricultural sector. These included extensive use of NZ wool for wall insulation and carpeting, rain water recycling, treatment of rainwater disposal (to support the work to improve Lake Ellesmere), the use of a cement substitute in the in-situ concrete works (helps to reduce the carbon footprint), the adoption of a

closed-cycle ground water for heating/cooling the building and a significant solar panel array on both the walls and roofofthebuilding.

Structurally he explained how a new seismic ‘shock absorber’ device has been incorporated into the building, specifically intended to facilitate the rapid re-occupation of the building after a future seismic event, meaning the new building is the (seismically) safest buildingoncampus.

Finally, the project has received various awards, including the International World Architectural Festival (higher Education and ResearchCategory).

A police car pulled up in front of grandma Bessie's house, and grandpa got out. The polite policeman explained that the elderly gentleman said that he was lost in the park and couldn't find his way home. "Morris," said grandma, "you've been going to that park for over 30 years, how come you get lost today?" Leaning close to grandma, so that the policeman couldn't hear, grandpa whispered, "I wasn't lost. I was just too tired to walk home."

A mother walks into her own bedroom and is surprised to catch her 10 year old daughter reading her diary. Startled, she just stands there. "You were right mom," says the daughter. “Reading is fun."
