RUGBY FANS BECOMES
STAR

Young rugby enthusiast Harry Leech has hit the spotlight, quite literally, after being chosen to appear on a billboard for the Crusaders. The opportunity arose after Harry’s standout moment at last season’s Anzac Day game, where he ran the ball onto the field and joined the players for the national anthem. That incredible experience came through a More FM competition, but it appears Harry’s passion for rugby left a lasting impression on the Crusadersmarketingteam.
Harry’s mum, Kylie, says the Crusaders reached out via email, askingif Harrywouldbe interested in becoming part of their latest marketing campaign. As a devoted Crusaders’ and All Blacks’ fan, Harry was the perfect choice.
He even got to bring along a few friends, Blake Smith and Henry Dalley, for the photoshoot. Allthree boys play rugby for Darfield Rugby Club and attend Darfield School, sharing a love for the sport that brought them to the big screen – or, in this case, the bigbillboard. The photos, now live on Go Media digital billboards across Christchurch, include one prominently displayed on Moorhouse Avenue. Harry’s family couldn’t resist an impromptu nighttime drive to thecitytoseeitinaction.
“It’s definitely easier going at night without the tra c,” says Kylie. For those wanting to catch a glimpse, Go Media’s website provides billboard locationsandlivewebcams.
But Harry hasn’t just been

starring in advertising campaigns – he’s also making a di erence in the community.
At the recent Crusaders Long Run, Harry completed an impressive 8km, raising $329 for the Child Cancer Foundation. Remarkably, he managed this without any training and in just under an hour.KylieandRubiejoinedin, walking 5km and supporting Harry’se orts.
The family is now looking forward to their next adventure: the Selwyn Stampede. With Harry’s determination and love for rugby, it’s clear this young Darfield star is just getting
started.
The Selwyn Stampede 2025 will be based at Foster Park in Rolleston on February 16 and is a 5km loop around Foster Park and into Faringdon subdivision. There are 1km, 5km, 10km and Half Marathon categories and bothacorporatechallengeand teamrelayoption.
Individuals willform a massive part of the Stampede in both the walking and running categories, and there is also a teamcategoryforfamilies.
Entries can be found on the Entries can be found on the on the on the Sewlyn Sports Trust website Sewlyn Sports Trust website and close at 12noon and close at on Friday, February 14.

Nut Point Centre is not registered as a charity or nonprofit organisation andis often seen as a business. However,
its activities align more closely with community and charitable support.
As a clay sculptor, John Allan established a small clay studio and art gallery in 2002 on a rundown lifestyle property in WestMelton.
In 2004, a local artist approached John about exhibiting her work in his gallery.Afterdiscussingit, they decided to hold a group exhibition for local artists. Hence the West Melton Art Exhibition was held in an old, open hay shed with very few artists. The event was a success and became an annual fixture.
Although initially a visual arts event, classical chamber music was featured from the beginning during the opening nights.
Over the years, Nut Point Centre has secured sponsorships from various organisations and businesses to fund Art Awards, eventually establishing its own fund for the Nut Point Centre Annual ArtAwards.

Dark sky areas have become increasingly popular tourist attractions and could give the district’s growing tourism sector another drawcard. It couldalsoworkwithotherdark sky accredited areas in the South Island to create a regionalexperience.
Exploring the Dark Sky accreditation is an action that was agreed as part of the Council’s Kai Aku

The strategy was confirmed through the LongTerm Plan with 62% of people supporting the Council playing a more active role in the district’s economy, including submissions from across Malvern supporting dark sky initiativesforthehighcountry. NEW PRINCIPAL FOR GREENDALE SCHOOL
Brayden Johnson says he’s very excited to be Greendale School’s new principal and becoming part of the community.
Brayden and Laura Johnson and their daughter Hazel have moved to Greendale from Rolleston, where Brayden was a team leader at Clearview Primary. Brayden’s team at Clearview had more than 200 students, but he sees an opportunity for stronger connections in a smaller, rural school.
“I’m really looking forward to taking the time to get to know each and every student and connect with their whanau as well,”saysBrayden. He doesn’t think there is any compromise in the children’s
learning at a small school and he’s not daunted by the Government’s changes to the curriculum.
“I think the school’s in a really good place with the curriculum. They implemented structured maths before structured maths came in and the teachers are really welltrained in structured literacy. We have amazing expertise to implement all the curriculum changes.”
Brayden is enthusiastic about sportandhasrepresentedNew Zealand in two world dragon boat championships. He says he’s had to be “a bit more casual” about dragon boating recently, butitmaybepossible to get back into it more seriously once he’s fully

establishedinhisnewrole.
Like most rural schools, Greendale School has some places for out of zone enrolments through the ballot system— they don’t actually decline anyone who applies.
The school o ers an unusually low ratio of students to teachers and teaching assistants, traditional single cell classrooms and a culture likeagoodfamily.
DRIVE FOR HEARTS
An old Land Rover, the first ever to be shipped to New Zealand, will travel from Dunedin to Auckland to raise money for Rheumatic Heart Disease(RHD).
The Land Rover, a ectionately known as “20” because it was number 20 o the production line, was completed on August 31, 1948, and first registered in Wellington on October 28, 1948.
“20”isbelievedtolikelybethe oldest and most original production Rover in the world. It came to New Zealand as a demonstration model and is famous for its climb up the stepsofParliamenttoshowo herfour-wheel-driveability. After its demonstration and working life, “20” spent 30 years tucked away in a service garage until Dunedin collector, Peter Marr bought it 10 years ago and took it to Dunedin. Peter is credited with completing an extensive but sympathetic restoration maintaining her originality, whichincludedherpatina.
Last year Julian Payton, a professor of physiology and director of the Centre for Research at the University of Auckland, bought “20” and
decided to use the iconic vehicle to raise awareness for New Zealand’s biggest killer disease and to raise funds to save lives and keep hearts beating.
He and his team hope to raise $300,000 for research into Rheumatic Heart Disease. The disease destroys the lives of Kiwi kids - 8% do not survive surgery, 30% die in 15 years and 40% are dead by 20 years ofage.
Julian and “20” will leave Dunedin on Friday, January 31 and arrive in Auckland on Sunday, February 16. They will leave Methven on Wednesday, February 5 to arrive in Christchurch.

A husband and wife are shopping in their local supermarket. The husband picks up a case of beer and puts it in their cart.
"What do you think you're doing?" asks the wife. "They're on sale, only $20 for 24 cans" he replies. "Put them back, we can't afford them" demands the wife.
They carry on shopping. A few aisles farther on, the woman picks up a $40 jar of face cream and puts it in the basket.
"What do you think you're doing?" asks the husband.
"It's my face cream. It makes me look beautiful," replies the wife.
Her husband retorts, "So does 24 cans of beer, and it's half the price."
