MALVERN CANCER SUPPORT GROUP GIVES HOPE AND SUPPORT

The Malvern Cancer Support Group looks back on a busy year of supporting our local community with those diagnosed with cancer and their families. This extends with our volunteer members rostering on for services such as Meals on Wheels and supporting the person with cancer and their families with meals, vouchers for food and petrol and with our upcoming Christmas Baking drop.

Earlier in the year, the “Bulbs of Hope Campaign” was popular with Malvern area selling a big proportion of Bulbs in the Canterbury region. As these, in turn grew into beautiful Daffodil Flowers, the hope is that next year will be once again supported well. Watch out for these and be in early for your order March and at the Malvern A&P Show.

Daffodil Day was well supported as always by our local volunteers on the day and our group is appreciative of their time given to collect for this great cause. The weather was kind too with a balmy day. A Big Thank You to our community for your generous support in donations. It has been a tough year for many – however the totals remain steady over past years – so thank you to all who contributed, it really is appreciated.

Paint the Town Yellow was won by the Malvern News which had a wonderful window display of Yellow. Thank You to all the other businesses who participated. We hope to have the brief out earlier next year – for more businesses to take part to build on the Daffodil Day vibe.

The Group through funding have supported a project from the Otago University Research which will completed

over the next few months. We look forward to hearing later in the year the results and findings from this cancer research. Also, the group have supported, from a donation, some equipment for the Darfield Area District Nurses which will help support them in the community.

We are always grateful for donations and are particularly so, for the generous $4500 from the recent ITM Fishing Contest.

The Cancer Society has now adopted clinics for those with cancer and support groups within communities. Navigator Katie sets up her Clinic at the Darfield Library on a Tuesday 9.30am-12.30pm for anyone needing support. This is a drop in, or you can connect with Katie to book a time with her, email katie.gordon@southerncancer.org.nz.

In the new year, the group will be trialling Exercise Group Sessions in the Malvern area for those with cancer, which supports any stage of their journey. This session will include a coffee catchup afterwards for added support. Years of scientific research has established exercise as an invaluable medicine in the management of cancer. Evidence-based guidelines recommend all people with cancer exercise regularly to help tolerate and recover from cancer treatments.

The Malvern Cancer Support Group is always looking to support the local community for those diagnosed with cancer and their families.

The group and support can be reached via our email, malverncancer@gmail.com.

Malvern Cancer Support Group wishes everyone a very Merry Christmas and thanks the community for your wonderful support during the year!

BUSY TIME FOR FIREFIGHTERS

Three fires have kept our firefighters busy over the last two weeks as they worked night and day to get them undercontrol.

The first fire, known as the Bridge Hill fire, took hold near the highway between Castle Hill and Arthurs Pass village andclosedSH73 for the dayon Thursday, December 5. Flock Hill Lodge was evacuated as a precaution, and some residents self-evacuated their homes in Castle Hill. Travellers were advised to use SH7 over the Lewis Pass as an alternative route. By late Sunday morning, the fire had consumed around 980 hectares and was largely undercontrol.

A scrub fire broke out on the Waimakariri river bank near Kirwee on Saturday 7. On Sunday, the fire crews focused

on extinguishing hotspots for most of the day and continued working on the deep-seated hotspots. The size ended up as 12hectareswithaperimeterof 1.9km.

West Melton become another hotspot on Sunday with a large fire spreading over 137 hectares (with a perimeter of 13.5kms) of scrub, standing pinetreesandpasture.

Firefighters supported by four helicopters strengthened the perimeter of the fire at West Melton ahead of strong norwestwindsforecastforMonday morning.

Fire and Emergency Assistant Commander Dave Key says a fire investigation is underway to establish the origin and causeofthefires.

At the time of going to print, the fires were out and there

was no damage to homes near West Melton, however, one farm shed reportedly had some damageandfenceswereburnt. Crews have worked hard at all sites, using hand tools, getting in amongst the trees and putting out hotspots. Drones have been used to help look for hotspots and crew numbers willbereduced.

GIVING HOPE TO OTHERS

James Hunt, of James Hunt Residential, decidedtogive his sta a funbut usefulchallenge tohelpothers.

He used his business ethos of transformation being ‘at the heart of what we do’ to create a special fundraiser. The challenge was to upcycle an item from a local demolition yard giving it a new and improvedlife, andthenauction that ‘new’creation on Trademe and donate 100% of the funds to each person’s chosen charity.

The theme was, “Making new fromoldtogivesomeonehope forthefuture.”

A few months ago, James and his sta headed to Musgroves in the city and each person chose an item to upcycle. Over the last three or four months each person has worked in their own time to build their creations.

Items recycled and upcycled include an old door given a new lease of life as an indoor

barn slider – this was chosen byJamesashisproject.

“This beautiful masterpiece started as a dusty tired little door. It’s a survivor, a storyteller, and now, a beautifully restored piece full ofcharacterandcharm.”

James’ chosen charity is Adventure Specialties Trust, which runs therapy programs forpeopleofallages.

Stuart chose an old shabby Rimu veneer cabinet and gave itsomemuchneededTLC.

“After a wee bit of filling and sanding.Ihada look aroundat home and found some interesting paint options that I thoughtwouldlooksharp.”

He gave it some new custom legs, and, with some paint, turned it into a bespoke piece of furniture that anyone would be proud to own. Stuart’s chosen charity is Variety – the Children'sCharity.

Johhnychosean old, forgotten, lead-light window. He quickly changeditsfunctionwithsome

restoration and turned it into a solidtablewithaglasstop.

“I hand made the legs on a friend’s lathe and took every chanceIcouldtomakeitintoa masterpiece.” Johhny’s chosen charity is CDN Trust, which runs holiday camps, after school programmes and supports youth workers to impactyouthinChristchurch.

Katie foundan oldwardrobe to upcycle and spent many hours lovingly sanding, building and painting her masterpiece and watchingitslowlytakeshape.

She chose Hagar as her charity – Hagar is an international not -for-profit organisation on a mission to restore life and dignity for survivors of modern slavery and to prevent exploitationandabuse.

“I chose this organization because I believe no one should ever live under the bounds of slavery of any description.”

ST JOHN DARFIELD

The TheThe The year has come around with a rush to finish, and soon we’llbewellintothenextone. Thoughts first to emergency services as they work to keep us and our properties safe, with increased wildfires, traffic incidents and a general increaseinworkload.

Kiwis love to travel to holiday destinations to make the most of their annual holidays. Often

remote from major towns, we need to consider some simple options about increasing our resilience and so enjoy the break more. Packing well, a first aid kit, prescriptions filled early so we have our medication, sunscreen, and antihistamines are great starters. Have you considered doing a first aid course to be better prepared, a medical alarm for the elderly you have leftbehind?

Christmas is about giving, and if you are into practical gifts

for family, then consider first aid kits or courses, join the ambulance subscriber scheme (covering ambulance transport to hospital), a medical alarm, or become a volunteer in one of the many parts of St John’s organisation.

On behalf of all the local St John staff, Merry Christmas, enjoy the festive period. Be safe, look out for your friends andfamilyaswell.

Thetemptationtooverspendis being thrown at us from every direction but let us not forget thatChristmasisaboutfamily.

In the Christian context, it started as small gifts to celebratethebirthofJesusand joytotheworld.

In the Pagan context, it was in honour of the agricultural god Saturn where Romans would spend the week of Saturnalia much like Christmas holidays today – feasting, drinking, exchanging gifts, and being joyful.

Providing Total Rural & Residential Property Management Solutions

The tradition of remortgaging the house, maxing out credit cards and generally overspending has been pushed by the commercial sector to the point where the debt hangover from Christmas can be anything but joyful. Stress on family and relationships was nowhere in the original briefofChristmas. So, as we are about to

celebrate Christmas this year, try not to succumb to the spending hype and have a stress-free celebration with whoever fills your cup, and greet 2025 with zero credit debt and a happy bankbalance.

Entering Heaven

Three men died on Christmas Eve and were met by Saint Peter at the pearly gates.

"In honour of this holy season," Saint Peter said, "You must each possess something that symbolises Christmas to get into heaven."

The first man fumbled through his pockets and pulled out a lighter. He flicked it on. "It represents a candle," he said. "You may pass through the pearly gates," Saint Peter said.

The second man reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of keys. He shook them and said, "They're bells." Saint Peter said, "You may pass through the pearly gates."

The third man started searching desperately through his pockets and finally pulled out a pair of women's glasses.

St. Peter looked at the man with a raised eyebrow and asked, "And just what do those symbolise?"

The man replied, "They're Carol's."

STUDENTS GET OUT INTO THE COMMUNITY

Year 9 students from Darfield High School recently spent time helping out in the local community as part of a Community Services Day. The School received some lovely feedback.

Five students and their teacher recently spent one and a half hours watering, weeding the vegetable gardens, and helping prune the fruit trees at the Nourish Community Garden in Russell Street. Julie, the garden co-ordinator, gave a brief talk to the students explaining how volunteers do all the garden work each Monday morning for two hours including weeding and planting, while other volunteers were rostered to do the watering. The local community can help themselves to the vegetables and fruit and many people also donate fruit and veges to the garden pantry.

DARFIELD GARDEN CLUB REPORT

In November the Garden Club visited The Rusty Acre in Mandeville. The owners, Andrea and Allan welcomed us to their beautiful garden with its amazing collection of steel sculptures - all created by Allan. Exploring the garden, we followed the pathway past the pond which was surrounded by well chosen plantings and discovered sculptures at every corner - so creative and quirky - a little man holding up a huge sleeper, another peeping out from a tree, a man up a ladder with his butterfly net and many, many more.

The lush garden is the home to a variety of plants, a magnificent cornus with its striking white flowers, rhododendrons, roses, hostas and alstromerias to name a few. As well as the garden and the sculptures there is a lovely gift shop, all making the Rusty Acre a great place to visit.

In December we met at the Halkett home of Val and Robbie Watson for our Christmas lunch. It was a pleasure to see the beautiful, well planned garden, and we all enjoyed the delicious lunch, a lovely way to end the year.

Our New Year will begin with an evening walk around several Kirwee gardens. New members are always welcome.

MALVERN ANGLICAN PARISH

I would like to share part of this Christmas message, which was written by a favourite writer of mine, a retired Christchurch Priest, Craufurd Murray.Hewrites:

“Through the seasons ahead of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany, we focus on journeys. There is Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth. There are people heading out in great numbers into the desert to hear John the Baptist. There is Mary and Joseph’s journeyto Bethlehem for the census. Shepherds travel to the stable after receiving an angelic message. Star guided Magi appear from distant lands and

arrive with special gifts (read the story in the Bible Luke chaptertwo).

A journey is never simply a physical movement from one place to another. It can be measured in other ways as well. These biblical journeys involve both an outer and inner journey. The physical journey, with new places and sights and experiences, is combined with a journey of heart, mind and spirit. A journey can change a traveller forever as eyes are opened to new understandings and realizations. This is why journeys are always rich in stories.”

Christian faith is a lifelong journey. What does it mean to know God, a God who will guide, inform, energize and shake us? The choice to engage with the Spirit of God is always ours. But will this Christmas be the beginning of a new journey – one of God withus–Emmanual.

Please join us for the services of remembering and celebration thisyear.Begin the journey.

DARFIELD BAPTIST CHURCH

As Christmas draws near, it's a time for reflection, gratitude, and celebration. Christmas is not just about gifts or Christmaslights-it'sareminder of all the things that connect us. It's about moments of kindness, acts of love, and the joy that comes from sharing withourfellowhumanbeings. This Christmas, may you find peace in the good things-a smile from a friend or a stranger, a quiet moment of reflection, and the love of

Christ in our hearts. Even in challenging times, the Holy Spirit has the power to heal andrenew.

Let us cherish the connections we have, whether near or far, and take a moment to appreciate all that we've been blessed with. As we celebrate Jesus's birth, let's also remember those who may be struggling-through a kind word, a helping hand, or a thoughtful gesture, we can make the season brighter for

others.

May your heart be filled with joy, your home with warmth, and your life with love. Let the beautyofthisseason bringyou closer to those around you and inspire you to hold Christ in your hearts and to also share hispreciouslovewithothers.

“Oh no, not leftovers again!” complained my older sister when she saw the leftover meatloaf on the table from last night's supper.

“Young lady,” responded my father sternly, “do you know how many people would love to have a delicious supper like this? You should be ashamed of yourself. Now before we start eating I want to hear you say grace thanking the Lord for this delicious meal.”

“Thank you Lord for this delicious supper,” muttered my sister submissively, “….again!”
