Annabel’s Kindergarten staff and parents enjoyed a fun evening at their recent art auction to raise funds for Cole Tudehope.
A spokesperson for the Kindergarten says they were overwhelmed by the generosity and support for Cole and the Tudehope family.
“The evening gave a great sense of community spirit. Annabel’s Kindergarten teaching teams have worked closelywitheverychildintheir centres to create an individual work of art that is unique and special to them and their families. This has inspired many budding artists to explore and create further at kindergarten.”

DONATING LIQUID GOLD
When it comes to giving plasma for a good cause, Coalgate resident Je Whittaker has no problem putting his arm out to give a donation.
Je recently notched up his 350th plasma donation at the ChristchurchDonorCentre.
The Centre says, “Reaching a milestone like this highlights Je ’s incredible philanthropy and commitment over his nearly 50 years of donating. The positive impacts of such a large number of donations are far-reaching with the lives of thousands of recipient patients saved or improved as a result.”
Je recently received a certificate to honour his milestone with the Centre o ering their “deepest appreciation and heartiest congratulations.”
“It would be great if this encouraged someone else to take up blood donoring,” says Je .
NZ Blood Service is encouraging more people to give plasma and save even morelives.
TheServicesaysplasmasupply in New Zealand is at tipping point, with demand for it continuing to increase by over 10%yearonyear.
“Just 17,435 people living in New Zealand donate ‘liquid
gold’; last year, their contributions resulted in an amazing 94,000 units of plasma we could use to help usmeetthedemand.”
With the demand for plasma projected to grow by a staggering 50% in the next three years, NZ Blood needs manymorepeopletojoin their community of plasma donors, and their existing donors to
donatemoreiftheycan. Plasma can be donated more often than blood – every two weeks and in between 3monthlyblooddonations.
NZ Blood says in the next 12 months they need 1,500 more people to start donating plasmaregularly.

John Wilde, of Alpine Signs, started his career in sign writing over 10 years ago after achieving his diploma in graphic design and web design.
He soon discovered that he wasn’t content with working in these industries, so began an entryleveljob in asign writing shopinAuckland.
He says he quickly got upskilled and became the goto guy for all aspects of sign writing around town, progressing to working for himself and contracting his services back to a handful of signshops.
John relocated his business, StickerFactory, afterheandhis wife Kirsty and their son, Theo, moved to Springfield two years ago.
“After starting a family, we craved some travel, and a lifestylechange,”saysJohn,“so we travelled the country in a caravan, in search of our forever home. Settling in Springfieldisthebest thingwe have done; we love every minuteoflivinghere.”

John says it’s about moving away from the perception of being ‘just’ a sticker shop. “We wanted to show our love of thisplacewecallhome. FISH TALES AND SPORTING FUN
The annual ITM Fishing Competition was held recently, andthenormaltallstoriestold ofthebigonesthatgotaway–one being on one of the organiser’s boats, where a teammate caused the fishing line to be wrapped around the prop mid-way through winding in a monster, which eventually escaped.
The event was well-supported with 79 adults and 25 juniors in attendance, with all the juniors’ receiving prizes, and manyadultstoo.
Event organiser Charlie Buttle was very pleased with the turnout and would like to thank David Mitchell, Wayne Boyes, Je Strowger, and Mark Strowger for helping out with runningofthefundraiser.
Thisyear$4,500wasraisedfor the Malvern Cancer Support Group.
The ‘Heaviest fish caught by a junior’ went to George Judd, weighing in at 2.533kg. The ‘Heaviest fish caught by a female’ went to Maddy Judd, weighing in at 2.245kg, and the ‘Overall best fish’ was caught by Bobby White, who nailed a 2.608kg fish, the second heaviest fish ever caughtatthecompetition.
The converted Dick & Trout award for the ‘Most Unfortunate Mishap’ this year, went to George Judd who under the direction of his father managed to pull the guide pole completely o his father’s boat trailer while
tryingtopullabuso theboat ramp that was stuck on the wetsurface.
George was heard telling his father it wouldn’t work but being a man of experienceand full of knowledge on the situation at hand, his father hooked the rope on to the guide pole of the trailer and then attached it to the bus.
George was then told to gun it and the pole promptly departed the trailer in what can only be described as a ‘complete stu up’. There was somedebateaboutwhoshould receive the prestigious award, but at the end of the day only one person was driving the car that caused the damage, even thoughGeorgefullytrustedhis father’s advice, he’s still the manthatputthepedaldown.
At the end of the weekend everyone that attended the event had a great time, and all returnedsafelyhome.

STOP MEANS STOP
Several recent crashes and near misses at the intersection of Aylesbury and Wards Road, as well as similar incidents around Selwyn, are a stark reminder that too many drivers still ignore obvious stop signs.
The Selwyn District Council has upgraded the signage at several high-risk intersections, including this five-point intersection near Burnham, but the recent crashes demonstrate that some drivers are still not paying attention, says Head of Operational DeliveryGarethMorgan.
“Most crash investigations and intersection observations show

approaching drivers typically slow down but fail to stop. Or they stop, but fail to check the wayisclear,”saysMorgan. Selwyn has many rural intersections where the approaches have an 80 or 100kmh speed limit, so any mistake can quickly turn deadly, or cause significant injuries.

DO YOU HAVE A PLAN?
By Ginny Nelson, Nelson, Mortgage Advisor. Mortgage MortgageAdvisor. Advisor.
The adage of ‘failing to plan is planning to fail’ is very true whenitcomestomortgages. How much is it going to cost to own a home? Mortgage repayments, insurance, rates andalittleextrafortherepairs andmaintenance. Do a budget and work out if it isafeasible option for you and you are not setting yourself up tofail. With interest rates coming
down, don’t be sucked into thinkingthatiswheretheywill stay. Alwaysallowforahigher rateandpayyour mortgageo as if it is. An extra $20 per monthmaynotsoundlikealot but on a $300k mortgage it couldsaveyouover$50,000in interest and reduce your loan byfouryears!
And, if you have planned it all, there is no time like the present to jump into the housingmarket. Don’t be fooled by the media
commentary that house prices are dropping, because overall things seem to have remained fairly static. There will always be bargains to be had if you are in the right place at the right time, so get a preapproval on your finance so you know you can put in a solid o er if an opportunity presentsitself.

RIFLE CLUB CELEBRATES ITS CENTENNIAL
The West Melton Miniature Rifle Club (WMMRC) recently celebrated 100 years with a meal and presentation of trophies at the Two Fat Possums in West Melton. President Barry Hill welcomed the attendees, which included the president of Target Shooting New Zealand, Shirley Herridge, pluspastandpresent shooters.
Challenges overcome Challengesovercome overcome
A meeting to discuss the formation of a rifle club was held on April 4, 1924 in the West Melton School; Mr W. H. Oakley occupied the chair. A second meeting was held on April 7 to formulate a programme and to discuss the butts for the range, which was tobealongsidetheCommunity Hall. By the second week in May, the range was opened. They did not mess around with consentsetc.inthosedays.
Rifle shooting was popular at this time and many ranges were in operation in the Selwyn district as we know it today. Rifle shooting was an

important part of the community. The WMMRC held a ball or dance every year up until 1959. Numerous card eveningswereheldaswell.
On May 25 in 1935, disaster struckandtheriflerangealong with the community hall burnt to the ground. This was a big setback for the district to lose its hall, the range and the rifles. At a meeting on March 22, 1937, it was decided to cobble a range through four conjoined sheds on Mr W. H. Oakley’s property at Halkett.

Over the 100 years, the West Melton club has had arange in Halkett for 90 years at two di erent venues. The current range on the Halkett Rd was purpose built in 1952. There have been two attempts over the years to change the name, buttheynevergotthenod.

Barry Hill noted in the Club’s booklet that members over the years have met challenges created by fire, rebuilding, repairing and overcome unnecessary legislation, to remainavaluedmemberofthe West Melton sporting community.

With just a month to go on the parliamentary calendar, I feel proud of the progress we’ve made in government. From removing outdated policies to launching new initiatives, these changes are already making a positive impact across Selwyn. With more improvements on the horizon for next year, there’s a lot to lookforwardto.
Last week I was thrilled to have launched the gender pay calculator, a crucial tool for tackling pay inequity and improving the economic empowerment of women – a top priority for me as Minister for Women. Right now, women inNewZealandstillearnabout 8.2 percent less than men, a number that hasn’t shifted much since 2017. This toolkit, developed in partnership with organisations like Spark, ANZ, and the NZ Law Society, includes a pay gap calculation method, as well as guides for businesses to help them drive their gap down. It’s not about pointing fingers though, but rather, about understanding where they stand and making positive changes. This is just

the start, and we’ll keep working alongside businesses to address both gender and ethnic pay gaps. I encourage everyKiwibusinesstogiveit a go – it’s a solid step towards creating fairer workplaces for everyone.
Supporting Selwyn’s biggest industries has also been a focus for the Government lately. We’ve secured new supply agreements with China that are expected to boost our exports in beef, lamb, dairy, and fruit. We’ve also announced a trade deal with the Gulf Cooperation Council, which will benefit our horticultural exporters by removing tariffs on 99% of our exports. These agreements highlight the diversity of New Zealand products and Kiwi expertise, with a projected $340 million boost to our economy and new job opportunities in our community.
I'm always keen to showcase Selwyn's value and potential
to my ministerial colleagues to ensure the support we get is impactfulandmeetsourneeds.
Earlier in the month, we had Hon. Simeon Brown visit the district. I showed him our recent growth and the critical pressure points we're facing in infrastructure, particularly roading.Heheard directlyfrom the community at a public meeting and shared updates on our government’s work to strengthen transport networks, push forward sustainable energy solutions, and ensure local councils prioritise spendingonessentialservices.
Over the next month, I’m looking forward to celebrating with our community. Keep an eyeoutformeattheChristmas parades in Lincoln, Rolleston, and Leeston – I’d love to see youthere!
As always, my office is open Monday to Friday, 10 am to 4 pm. If you have any questions or need assistance, please feel free to stop by – we’re here to help.
CHILEAN NEEDLE GRASS
Chilean needle grass is a serious threat to agriculture and has the potential to cost an estimated $1.16 billion in lost production across Aotearoa, if left uncontrolled. It is unpalatable to stock, and has sharp seed heads that can penetrate pelts, contaminate wool and cause blindness in livestock.
Once established, it can be di cult and costly to control withseedspreadingveryeasily on clothing, machinery, vehicles, feed and on livestock.
The new biological control agent (Uromyces pencanus) was released near Spotswood in NorthCanterburyearlier this month to help tackle the highlyinvasiveplant.
Uromyces pencanus is a rust fungus that damages the top layer of the Chilean needle grass leaves causing increased
water loss and premature death. This technique is successfulindryconditions.
Description:
• It has bright green leaves, around 5mm wide, which are flat and rough to touch when stroked downwards towards the base.
• Flowerheads are large, drooping and purplish and occur in spring.
• Seed head is hard and hairy and has pointed and spear-like with a very sharp, penetrating base.
• Seeds occur in late spring to mid-summer.
• Seeds are dispersed by attachment to livestock and feral animals.
• Human-mediated dispersal through the movement of contaminated machinery, clothing and hay.
• Habitats include pastures, grasslands, roadsides, open areas, cli s, lake and forest margins, and lawns.

As we enter this busy time of year, it’s inspiring to look back on our district’s progress and look ahead to the new projects that will shape Selwyn's future.
Our Council recently took a significant step of advancing the concept of a councilcontrolled organisation (CCO) to manage our district’s water services. This move aligns with theCentralGovernment'sLocal Water Done Well legislation, which aims to ensure future-focused, financially sustainable, and secure water services. A Selwyn-owned CCO would allow us to access new financing options to keep water charges affordable while maintaining compliance with environmental and water quality standards. I want to emphasize that this model will remain community-owned –protecting against any potential for future privatisation. Early next year, we’ll consult with residents to ensure the voice of the community is central to the charter and constitution of the WaterCompany.
We have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with KiwiRail to help align our rail infrastructure withSelwyn’sbig-picturegoals for the future. With new lowemission locomotives on the way, KiwiRail’s commitment will boost connectivity and support growth across the district. Around 30 trains already pass through Selwyn each day, and we’re also looking into creating a dedicated freight hub in Rolleston to make moving goods easier, reduce road traffic, and support sustainable development. It’s also been a season of communitycelebration, with
events like the 13th Hororata Highland Games, which drew thousands of visitors and hundreds of competitors. This festival brings people from all over the region to enjoy a day of family friendly fun. A big thankstotheorganisersofthis event. Also, thanks to our Selwyn Road Patrollers, who enjoyed a well-deserved pool party at the Aquatic Centre, I enjoyed manning the BBQ to feed over 160 patrollers from 14schools.

A DREAM COMES TRUE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
Jordan Riki (24) is one of Malvern’s rugby league sporting heroes; he signed up with the Brisbane Broncos at justthetenderageof15.
The Broncos second rower recently played on home turf in Christchurch for the Kiwis in his test debut against Australia’s Kangaroos at the Apollo Projects Stadium. A dream that his mum, Janelle, says was a long time coming andawell-deservedhonourfor
his many years of hard work andcommitment.
Jordan’s family was there to support and cheer him on.
Janelle had bought 50 seats at the stadium so family and friends could take part in his first Kiwis game, while also wearing tee-shirts especially designed for the special game tosupporttheirhero.
She says Jordan was greeted with a “hearty roar” and “lots of tears” as he ran onto the

Jordan told reporters on the day of the match that as a youngster he had told his grandfather that he wanted to playfortheKiwisonedayand

Jordan was unable to be contacted for comment for the Malvern News but his mum, Janelle, says after being in camp with the Kiwis, he was really looking forward to a rest before returning to pre-season trainingwiththeBroncos.
MALVERN RIFLE CLUB
Malvern Rifle Club hosted the 2024 Canterbury Spring Championship meeting over November16and17.Thetwoday event was shot over seven distances 300, 500, 600 and 600 yards (day one), 800, 900 & 900 yards (day two) with 10 counting shots at each distance.
On day one, it didn't feel like spring, it felt more like winter. It was a cool damp-ish day, with a gusty south westerly wind. Some occasional light rain at 600 yards. There was some great shooting despite theconditions.

Day two, what a difference a day makes. Gone was the cool/ coldsouthwesterlywind, gone was the threat of rain. Instead, there was sunshine, almost cloudless skies. The wind was light, with fast changes in direction and speed with fewer shooters scoring possibles especially at 900 yards. A couple of top shooters shot the wrong target at 900 yards. Twice it was sighters (so didn't count), once a counting shot on the wrong target. Leaders from day one had to fight hard to retain their

positions with some changing positions.
Congratulations to all who came to compete and enjoy thecamaraderie.

Barry Donald Rowlands
Heather and Gareth wish to express our sincere thanks to all those who attended Barry’s Funeral service. We apologize if we didn’t get to speak to each of you personally but your presence was appreciated.
We have been overwhelmed by the community support from relatives, friends, acquaintances, work colleagues, neighbours and various clubs we jointly or severally belonged too.

We also acknowledge the immense support we received over the past year from the District Nursing services, the MND support personal and of greater importance the staff at Darfield Hospital. They went above and beyond to care for Barry and also to support both myself and Gareth. We are eternally grateful.
