GIVE THE HORNDON DASH A GO

If you love to run, want to get fitandchallenge yourself, then the Horndon Dash could be justthemotivationyouneed.

The free weekly event is the brainchild of Ryan BayesMortimerwhorunsBM Fitness, a home-based gym for personal and group training in Darfield.

Ryan says the weekly event hastworunseveryweek-6am on Tuesdays and 6pm on Wednesdays - and is a beginner-friendly ‘up and back’ format rather than the traditional loop that most people would be familiar with.

“Everybody starts together

then runs as far as they can in 15 minutes before turning around and running back to the starting line, this creates a 30 minute run where everybodyfinishestogether.”

He says the format means beginners aren’t left behind, which can impact confidence and experienced runners can pushthemselves.

“There’s no pressure to keep up with anyone else, as these runs are about setting your own goals and seeing steady improvements each week. It makes for a fun, final fiveminutes with everyone converging on the finish line together.”

After looking for a stretch of road that was suitable for the up and back format, Ryan choseHorndonSt.

“There’safootpathmostofthe way, it’s just under 4km with only one major road crossing andit’snearimpossibletotake awrongturn.”

The Horndon Dash is free and open to anyone who wants a fun, supportive environment to start or improve their health. Whether just getting into fitness or a seasoned runner, Ryan’s goal is to create a welcoming place to meet others, enjoy a new style of workoutandgiveityourbest.

“The run leaves from the dog park after a short warm up. Keep an eye out for the guy attachedtothe goldandwhite border collie, that’s me,” says Ryan.

Finishing touches are being added to the new bike track on the Darfield Reserve; it will soon be ready for some exciting action and fun.

MOVING FORWARD, ACKNOWLEDGING THE PAST

In 1918, during World War 1, Lt Douglas Deans sent his mother several acorns in a tobacco tin from Gallipoli. The trees grown from the acorns became known as Gallipoli Oaks and one was planted in 1924 in an official ceremony beside the Bridge of Remembrance in Christchurch. In Kirwee, ANZACLane islined with oak trees descended from oneoftheoriginalacorns.

Anzac Lane Memorial was first mooted some years back, and was expanded by David Stott and Peter Bond. The Kirwee Community Committee has actively been applying for grants and raising money

towards this project. The plaques, now cast, were on display at the recent Kirwee Garage Sale, andwillbe at the Courtenay A & P Show. The cost of these were almost $13,000.

The next step is for the concrete work at a cost of $17,000. The Committee is just $6,000 short of the full amount.

Spokesperson DavidStott says, “Wealsohavethepossibility of recognising other wars that have been fought and need to raise money to have another plaque cast for them, along with thanking our sponsors. It is our wish to have this

underwaypriortoAnzacDayin 2025. We will be holding our first Anzac Day Service in April 2025inANZACLane.”

In the New Year, The Kirwee Committee is planning a quiz night at Thirsty Acres to raise further funds for the War Memorial and has other fund-raisingactivitiesplanned.

PROPOSAL TO ESTABLISH INDEPENDENT NEW WATER

A proposal to create a councilowned Organisation (CCO) in response to recently introduced Local Water Done Well (LWDW) legislation is being considered by Selwyn DistrictCouncil.

Chief Executive Sharon Mason says that an independent organisation would separate the costs of water services from the council budget and rates and make them a household cost, like your powerbill.

“A council-owned organisation will need to be financially sustainable and independent from the council, so we feel this structure has real merit,” saysMason.

The Local Water Done Well legislation was introduced to address the historical

underfunding of water infrastructure within councils and to enable greater levels of direct borrowing for necessary infrastructureimprovements.

“While Selwyn has invested heavily in its water assets, we believe that we still need to consider a new delivery model to ensure our water services are managed e ectively and sustainably,”saysMason.

The Chief Executive says the Selwyn District Council considered other models, including partnerships with neighbouring councils.

However, a Selwyn-owned water service provider has emerged as the preferred option to comply with the Government’s demand to deliver a Water Services Delivery Plan by September

MasonstressesthattheSelwyn community will have ample opportunity to provide feedback on the new entity proposal through public consultation.

“It is important to note that a new Council-owned organisation must comply with a host of rules and legislation to ensure it can operate independently, be financially sustainable, and never be privatised,”saysMason.

As part of the proposal, the council has established a Local Water Done Well strategic committee to develop the new entity's constitution, strategy, andstatementofexpectations.

SOUTH ISLAND INTERNATIONAL POLO CHALLENGE AHEAD

James Reid, a local Kirwee lad, isgearingupfortheNZvsUSA School Polo Tests being held at11.15amonNovember30at the Port Hills Polo grounds at Tai Tapu. The visiting USA school team will play against the South Island School team and also against the North Island School team on December 1 at Waimai Polo Club.

James was named captain of the team and he and his team members – Max Dormer, Charlie Somerville, Matthew Geddes and Reserve Andrew Messervy – have been preparing their horses for this international match and will play in front of a large crowd of people at the Ronald MacDonald House fundraiser day.

The team is currently receiving coaching from Cody Forsyth, Sam Martin and Dean Geddes in preparation and will play at the South Island Presidents invitational tournament the weekend before the International to gel more as a team and work out their game plan.

James has been riding horses for most of his life. At just 11 years of age, he got a taste of Poloandnowhasapassionfor thesport.

He owns a string of four polo ponies - Singer, Luna, Pampa and Sally. They are all “o the track thoroughbreds”, who havebeenretrainedtoplaythe game.

James trains six days a week and plays most weekends over the summer in club tournaments around the South IslandforPortHillsPoloClub. He has had opportunities to play in the North Island, Australia and Singapore. As polo is a sport that takes a lot of time and dedication, his family help with the preparation and care of the horses with feeding, shoeing, animalhealthandfitness.

On game day it is not just one horse that the player rides in a game – most ride four horses and change every seven and a half minutes to keep up the speed and the intensity of the game.

James is also part of South IslandSUPApolo, whichisclub forschoolagedplayers.Hehas been fortunate enough tohave lessonsat Waireka PoloSchool at Sefton under the guidance of Charlie Wood over the years and now holds a 0-goal handicap.

The second round of the Malvern Rifle Club Championship was held over 800 & 900 yards, which are considered to be the “Longs”the longer distances. It was cool at the start of the afternoon with a few spits of rain greeting shooters at the 800 yard mound. Fortunately further rain did not eventuate.

The north-westerly wind was changeable, with quick changes in strength. It proved challenging at 800 yards with scores down from previous weeks. Congratulations to Sam Riddle (B Grade), who top scored at 800 yards. The windhadbeguntochange direction as shooters readied to shoot at 900 yards. The flagswerefrequentlydownthe

DARFIELD GUN CLUB

There were no excuses this month with clear skies and a lazy southerly to keep things cool.

The day saw some average shooting with just three possibles among the 33 attendees, two 25/25 scores in the eye-opener and one in the KinneyMemorial.

In the Perrin Cup 18 Metre Triples, Ron Greatorex outshone the opposition and dropped just a single point to win HOA and A grade. Marcel VanLeeuwen won the B grade in a shoot-o after shooting 45/50 (showing he is recovering well from surgery) and Ethan Greenwood continues to improve taking outtheCgradewith40/50.

Last for the day was the Kinney Memorial vs Mead Te Pirita (Handicap Triples), with just the five shooters for Mead (four A grade and one B grader); it was always going to be a lot one sided with all of Darfield'sCgradersincludedin the average scores. With meat

prizes over the two rounds of triples, there were no other shoot-o s required – just Lee McVinnie as the lucky shooter (five targets at random distances), although not so lucky in this case with a hard left o 22 metres as the first targetleadingtoaquickexit.

Many thanks to all those who assisted on the day and those with the usual great afternoon tea.

Our next shoot is our Xmas shoot on Sunday, December 1 witha10amstart. Allwelcome.
