PENINSULA TO THE PLAINS

Te Huanui is excited to be bringing the Peninsula to the Plains this October. Inspiredby their environment, Tricia Helwett, Janie Porter, Jennifer Maxwell, Frances Malcolm and Sarah Ford share their unique perspective of life on Banks Peninsula. The art gallery welcomes all to join them for the opening of the exhibition this Friday, September 27 from 6.30pm.

Tricia Hewlett is inspired, like many artists, by nature. She says, “I am o ered limitless material including the environment we need to preserve, the critters big and small, and the tiny details noticed through careful observation. Janie Porter is passionate about conservation and is

known for her work in portraiture, landscape and birds. Working mostly with a palette knife, she builds layers of paint constantly experimenting with light, transparency and form. For 'Peninsula to Plains', Janie explores the intersecting of landscape and people, and the marksweleave.

Jennifer Maxwell has worked as a ceramicist for over thirty years, making eccentric animals in high-fired stoneware and porcelain, exhibiting and running workshops. As Mayor of Selwyn, I recently had the chance to meet with several Cabinet ministersat the LGNZ conference to highlight both our successes and the challengesthatcomewithrapid expansion. Our district's growth brings exciting opportunities, but also puts pressure on our infrastructure, housing, and community services. It’s critical that I communicate these realities to government leaders toensureweget thesupport in education, housing, health and policing we need to keep pace withcommunitydemand. Recently, the Government releasedthefundingallocations for Selwyn’s road maintenance and upgrades. While the maintenance funding was as expected, their contribution to the improvements needed fell

about $30million short of what is necessary. There's a bigger conversation happening across the country about how New Zealand funds its infrastructure as currently councils and developers pay for the infrastructure required for growth while the benefits of growth including new tax and GST goesto Wellington. One of the tools we’re exploring with Central Government is the return of a portion of the GST fromnewbuildsbacktocouncil to cover infrastructure costs. This will help the broken rates system that is leading to unaffordablecostsforfamilies.

In my role, I have the privilege of visiting many of our businesses. Recently I stopped by the Rolleston Road Metals quarry where they’re running

muchoftheiroperationonsolar energy and re-instating quarried land back to farmland. I also visited a Kevler Homes development, where they’re taking a fresh approach to subdivision development to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact. If you’d like me to come and see your business, please get in touch: mayor@selwyn.govt.nz

Lastly, I want to acknowledge thetoughtimesourruralsector is facing. With commodity prices down, interest rates up, and ever-present weather unpredictability,it’s challenging. Our farmersareknownfor their production, but it’simportantto recognise the risks they take andthehardworkoffamiliesto put food on tables here and aroundtheworld.

Can you help with some information about these people?

Some really good news this week for low to middle income families with young children. We’velaunchedourFamilyBoost package, which means that parents can now register for payments to help with ECE costs. Under this scheme, familiesearningup to$180,000 can claim up to 25 percent of their weekly early childhood education (ECE) fees, up to a maximum of $975 every three months.

I have reached out to all providers in Selwyn about the scheme’s launch and details on how to apply. To begin the process, you can log in to myIR. Claims for the payment can be made from 1 October for ECE fees invoiced between July 1 and September 30, 2024. For more details, visit www.ird.govt.nz/familyboost.

For parents of children starting schoolsoonandthoseinyears1 to 3, we’re excited to announce additional funding to help

schools deliver astrongreading and writing curriculum during these important early years. This funding will give teachers the tools and resources they need, including decodable books, fun games, and other quality materials that support a structured approach to literacy. Some schools will also be trialing phonics checks to ensure they’re ready for implementationin2025.Thisis just one of the steps we’re taking to boost student achievement and close the equity gap in our education system.

We have recently announced a review of the regulations concerning agricultural and horticultural products. The Government is working to streamlinetheprocess, allowing farmers and growers to access safe and innovative products faster, to stay competitive. This is positive news for our local producers. During my recent

visits, many of you have raised concerns about the complexity of the current process so we’re aiming to improve access to effective products that will make our agriculture sector morecompetitive.

This month, I held two Coffee Catchups in Lincoln and Tai Tapu and was pleased to hear that our government’s policies are positively impacting our region. It’s always valuable to receive feedback and new ideas tohelpourcommunity.

I’ll be hosting four more Coffee Catchups in October - the first on October 7 in Dunsandel at 11am, followed by Leeston at 12:30pm,thenonOctober11at 11am in Rolleston, and at 12:30pm in Prebbleton. Please contact my office in advance to arrangeanappointment.

FASHION EVENT A FUN SUCCESS

Around 130 children and adults turned up to view a range of fashion clothing, past and present, at the Vintage Fashion Show held last Sunday – some ondisplay, sometwirledaround and some modelled by family andfriends.

Categories for the event included: Outfits of the 1920s to 1980s; Going away outfits; Wedding outfits; Debutante; andSpecialoutfits.

Organiser Lynmaree Sopoaga, aka Aunty Lyn, says, “It was a special celebration to gather, to hearthestoryoftheoutfits, and theoccasionstheywereworn.A trulyhumblingexperience.”

A visit to Marg White (nee Adams) and being shown her wardrobes ofclothes had led to the idea of showing off the outfits and creating a fundraisingevent.

An invitation to the community resulted in 32 entries being modelled by daughters, granddaughters, great granddaughters and even the outfit

In the wedding dress category, Betty Henderson, who turned 92 on the actual day, wore her dress and everyone stood up for her as she proudly walked down the aisle on the arm of John Anderson. Adrienne Begg andKatrinaSampsonalsowore theirownweddingdresses.

The Darfield Ukulele group opened the fashion show with several songs, and pianists Brian Knopp, Elizabeth Blackburn, and Cecilia Pascoe accompanied each model with music as they sailed down the aisle while commentators Rev. HATO HONE ST JOHN UPDATE

The sirens may sound, the yellow or white ambulance travels through the county, anonymously as it goes about its business. This is the impression we all have, of what St John does. Some will comment about a time delay, or not meeting their expectations around an outcome.

Butthisisjustonepartofwhat HatoHoneStJohndoes.Youth, Caring Caller, Pet Therapy, First Aid training, Sport, or Event cover, Friends of the Emergency Department are just some of the people services. Lifelink home alarm schemes, AED in Communities, Health Shuttles and Subscriber schemes are just some of the ways HHSJ resources their communities.

2024 has been a quieter time forStJohnlocally.Notbecause

of a lack of patients, but more a shortage of people resources that hasmeant adifferent type of cover for the community. The ambulance that may previously have been crewed by local volunteers has often been ‘in the shed’ while a paid crew from the city has covered day shifts from here, or Rolleston, Leeston or city crews have attended to other calls. At other times local crews may have been doing jobs in other areas around Selwyn. At the end of the day, it is about those in need getting the service they have beenusedto.

Because St John in Malvern relies completely on Volunteer staff, a reduction in people available has far- reaching impacts. Just like our Fire & Emergency colleagues, time away from work has a cost to the individual as well as employer. We are very

appreciative of the support we receive to make staff available. Time delays are sometimes a function of low crew availability, but also resources are prioritised as St Johnworks hard to cover the increased workloadacrosstheregion. We have recently been successful in recruiting new members to the team, and as they progress through their training, their value will become evident. We are also soon able to accept new applications for members here. Have a look at the website. careers.smartrecruiters.com/ HatoHoneStJohn Itisnotbreakingnewsthatthe health system is under pressure, with increased levels of both staff and community illnesses, as well as reduced access to the resources in primary healthcare. AVIATOR EXTRAORDINAIRE

On Friday September 13, we once again had the pleasure of Des Lines from Swannanoa speaking to our group and, despite some very inclement weather, we had a really good attendance.

Des’ reputation as a great raconteur preceded him. He is an ex-Air New Zealand pilot with many years’ experiences andstillhasanairworthyTiger Moth in his collection of aeroplanes.

His topic was titled “Aviator Extraordinaire”. At the age of 15, he told his parents he wanted to be a pilot, and he funded his lessons by working in a grocery store in Ranfurly. Des was so committed he flew

After gaining his commercial pilot licence, through the Canterbury Aero Club, Des became a first officer on DC3’s at age 21. He then spent the next 10 years as a first officer flying on DC3’s Fokker F27 Friendships, Vickers ViscountV807andBoeing737.He later became a full captain on the F27’s and several models andmarksofBoeingAirliners.

SELWYN RESIDENTS REJECT SDC'S

PROPOSED REPRESENTATION REVIEW OPTIONS

Selwyn District Council (SDC) has received overwhelming feedback rejecting all options put forward during the recent Representation Review 2024. The consultation process, aimed at gathering community input into better representation, has sparked significant opposition. An overwhelming majority expressed grave concerns about SDC’s plan to reduce councillors to eight and have no Community Boards. Of great interest will be the analysis by SDC in regard to how residents in West Melton and Burnham voted on being the suggested removal from the Malvern ward.

Whilst awaiting the official SDC analysis, preliminary analysis (E&OE) undertaken on the record 615responsespublishedbyCounciltentativelyshow:

SWAP MEET ENJOYED BY ALL

The Hororata Domain buzzed with activity as a large gathering of enthusiasts and collectors flocked to the annual Hororata Mechanical Swap Meet on the sunny SaturdayofSeptember21.

Cindy Driscoll, from the Hororata Community Trust, described the event as a vibrantgatheringofindividuals with a shared passion for all things mechanical. Enthusiasts around New Zealand travelled to the Swap Meet to trade car parts, motorcycle bits, tools, and various mechanical items. Against clear skies, a stunning array of vintage, veteran, and classic cars, trucks, and motorbikes lined theHororataracetrack.

The event, organized by the Hororata Community Trust, served as a fundraiser for several community groups

such as Glentunnel Primary School, Hororātā Historical Society, and Hororātā Parish. Meanwhile, the aroma of mouth-watering bacon butties from the Hororata Primary School and the allure of the Hororata Pies added to the festiveatmosphere.

Looking ahead, the Hororata Community Trust, in collaboration with John Foster and Dave Pomare, expressed its eagerness to see the event grow while remaining true to its core identity as a dedicated mechanical swap meet. They emphasized their commitment to preserving the event's unique character, ensuring it remains focused solely on mechanical items without incorporating bric-a-brac or household goods. This vision guarantees the event's

enduring appeal for years to come.

"We are grateful for the volunteers and the support of the Hororata Community Trust partners and funders who helped make this event happen. Save the date for the next highly anticipated Hororata Mechanical Swap Meet next year on September 20,2025,"saysCindy.

HOW TO APPLY FOR FAMILYBOOST

FamilyBoost is a childcare payment to help eligible households pay for the cost of early childhood education (ECE). You may be able to receive FamilyBoost if you are the caregiver of a child or children aged five and under, have household income of less than $180,000 ayear, pay fees to a licensed ECE provider, and are a tax resident of New Zealand.

To apply you need a myIR login, an IRD number (tax identification number) for each child attending ECE, your bank information and your partner’s details. myIR is an online service provided by the Inland RevenueDepartment.

Once you have logged on to myIR and registered for FamilyBoost, you can make a claim every quarter for the previous quarter and upload copies of your invoices from your ECE provider. Save your receipts! The quarters run

July 1 to September 30, October 1 to December 31, January 1 to March 31, April 1 toJune30.

If you share childcare responsibilities with another caregiver – for example, with a partner you have separated from or the children’s grandparents – both caregivers may claim FamilyBoost, provided they meet theeligibilitycriteriaand have a portion of the ECE invoicesintheirnames.

FamilyBoost payments are calculated based on household income. This includes the income of your partner, even if they are not the parent of the

child. You may be able get both FamilyBoost and other childcare subsidies handled by MSD.

If you ‘can't deal with the admin’ or need help understanding these subsidies or anything else, then talk to Citizens Advice Bureau. The CAB volunteers take as long as it takes with eachperson. They are trained to listen, ask questions, be respectful, and helpclientsfindasolutionthat works.

Graham William Henderson

Graham’s family wish to sincerely acknowledge the expressions of sympathy extended to us. To those who were able to attend Dad’s farewell and to the many who could not, yet have reached out - thank you. We are ever grateful for the gift of community support.

A kind, endearing, gentle man with an a"able ability to engage. His smile and warmth will be endlessly held. Together now with our gracious Mum. Peace at last for you both.

But the ball went over the fence and bounced off the bike path onto the road, where it hit the ,re of a moving bus and was knocked back on to the fairway.
