Local author Sharon Reynolds has just published her third book in The Kingdom Series, called Keys to Kingdom Power.
It was not her plan to write a series but when she wrote her first book, Becoming the DaughteroftheKing , a raw and gritty tale about her earlier life as a single mum with two daughters, one book ledtoanother.
“The first book is more of an autobiography – a kind of testimony, if you like, of my own life and my own journey intoadulthoodanddiscovering faith,” says Sharon. “I journal daily, so for me, the process wastopulloutmyjournals,go backthroughthem, andputmy storytogether.”
Sharon says she grew up reading books and had a great imagination as a child. “My father fostered a love of reading and books in us. So that'skindofbeenalegacy.”
Shelovedtotellpeoplestories and, being Ngāti Kahangunu decent, she says, “Our iwi are creative storytellers. So, I would tell stories and people would say to me, ‘wow, that's amazing, Sharon, you should writethat’.”
What Sharon discovered from sharing her stories was that
she was helping those people and that is when the idea for the book took flight and the timing of COVID could not havebeenbetter.
Writing her first book was a journey about confronting her past – abuse and desperation – and moving forward –finding faith with her new husbandanddiscoveringanew life. That new life saw Sharon and her husband becoming missionaries on a road of faith that took them to Papua New Guinea, Arnhem Land in Australia – the aboriginal backlands, Africa, and Cambodia. What she didn’t expect was how much her journey resonatedwithpeople.
“I'm not really telling a new story,” says Sharon. “Women have been going through this repeatedly. But here I could write a story of hope and redemption; make it my own byweavingmystoryintoit.”
She soon realised that others were impacted by her story and that their lives were transformed through it.
Readers started contacting her from overseas and shared their stories with her and how they had been healed through readingherbook.
“I never expected this,” she
says.
Itsoonledtohersecondbook, TheKingdomWithin, astoryof inner healing and finding identity in truths rather than theliespeopletellthemselves.
Her latest book, Keys to Kingdom Power , brings together stories of desperate women who are delivered out of desperate places in their
lives. It is a book of truth, love, andhope.
“It’s for all women who are oppressed, all women who are desperate,” says Sharon.
“It's for all women who love their children and feel like they're going to lose them andit'stheirlastbreath.

Concern about the lack of medical care available to local residents is increasing as new subdivisions are created in Darfield and more people move into the Malvern district.
New residents, and some not so new, are struggling to enrol at Darfield Medical Centre and beingputonawaitinglistthat is growing. People are being forced to enrol in medical centres up to 36km away, the closest being Oxford, which is currently accepting new patients (on a small waiting list) but with priority being given to people who are new totheOxfordtownship.
Four other centres accepting new patients outside the Malvern area show up on the Pegasus Health website and include Leeston Medical Centre, We Care Lincoln, 1 Health Wigram and We Care Health Wigram. Rolleston Medical Centre is accepting newpatientsbut onlyasfar as WestMelton.
More doctors needed More needed DrJohanVlok,MedicalDirector
Darfield & West Melton Medical Centre, says patients notbeingabletoaccesshealth care in a timely fashion is not unique to the district but is a nationwide and worldwide
problem.
He says the exponential growth of the population has exceeded the supply of doctors. Historically Darfield patients have been very lucky tobeabletoaccesshealthcare withlimitedwaittimes.
“We work continuously to recruitnewdoctorsforDarfield and West Melton and rely heavily on overseas locums to fill the gap. The community would not be aware that this process, is ongoing and complex and comes at great additionalcosttoeveryoneand also includes subsidised housing, airfares etc.,” says Dr Vlok. “Work visa applications and registering with NZ Medical Council can take months.Darfieldisrural, which can be a barrier to doctors and their families who want to live inanurbanenvironment.”
Regarding enrolment, Dr Vlok says, “Without su cient doctors we cannot enrol more patients. Most practices in our district have waitlisted enrolments as well. We cannot expand our services in Darfield withoutmoredoctors.”
Underfunding primary health care has a negative impact in what doctors choose to specialisein.
“It seems more are choosing not to enter primary care. GP burnout is causing doctors to retire early or reduce their hours. The situation is unlikely to improve with half of the current GP workforce retiring over the next 10 years. An illustration is the new $14.7 million Rolleston Health
facility that was built to help fill primary care patient need but for two years was unable to attract GPs to rent the space.”
Currently Darfield Medical Centre has more than 300 people (with their families) on its waitlist. The medical centre accepts enrolments of newborns of enrolled mothers and local patients on palliative care.
Dr Vlok says that when patientsareunabletobegiven an appointment, they are advised of other options e.g. practice plus or other urgent careclinics.
“When a patient hasn’t been seen in three years, our sta willmakecontactandeitherre -enrol them or remove them from our system. This often happens with students moving away for university, families moving, but unable to find a doctorintheirnewtown.”
Darfield Medical Centre acknowledgesadutyofcareto thosealreadyregisteredandDr Vlok says, “It is with much regret that we are not able to seeeveryone. Wearealsovery grateful to patients that show appreciation to our dedicated sta who work tirelessly to provide healthcare to our community.”

A spokesperson for Council says, “We would like to see additional healthcare opportunities extended to Darfield and we will continue to work as a partner with Health NZ to meet the needs of the local community through place-based planning processes.”
While the Darfield Medical Centre has a wait list, Health NZ advises that there is other availability across the district.
If you are having trouble enrolling with a general practice, our local PHOs (Pegasus, Christchurch & Waitaha PHOs) can assist you to find a GP if you contact them.
“Our partnership with Health New Zealand to run a tender process to identify a new general practice to occupy available space in Toka Hāpai (Selwyn Health Hub) is a great example of this. The process has been successful with Phoenix Health scheduled to begin operating in the next six months. Through Phoenix’s model, enrolled Selwyn residents that work in Christchurch City will be able to access GP appointments in both Rolleston and the city once the practice opens. The Hororātā Hall has been an integral part of the community since 1890 and is returning to communityownership.
Originally built and maintained by the community, the Hall has played a crucial role in fostering a thriving rural community and holds significanthistoricalvalue.
Following many extensive discussions between the Hororātā Community Trust and theSelwynDistrictCouncil, the Council has o cially transferred the title of the Hororātā Hall and the adjacent landtotheTrust.
This transfer of ownership means that the Trust will now bear all costs related to the Hall's operation and make all future decisions for this facility.

We are grateful to the work of the Council, which made this possible; it has been quite a complex process,” says Hororātā Community Trust Executive O cer Cindy Driscoll.

To the Editor:
There is a group within the Selwyn District Council who are trying to do away with the Malvern Community Board. To this end, they have ignored the submissions of over 200 Darfield and Kirwee residents plus a ruling by the Local Government Commission, and are wanting only one Councilor for Malvern to cover 5,000 square kilometers with no Board. It is important that residents provide feedback to Council from 8th August that we need the Board to remain and not have the needs of Malvern dictated by Rolleston. HarveyPolglase

Tucked away on a property in Kirwee live John and Trish Crawford. The couple have lived there for 17 years but only recently moved their business,MotorsportSolutions, onsitearound18monthsago.
Motorsport Solutions builds, manufactures parts, and services racing cars, and was originally onsite at Ruapuna Raceway for 32 years until the car club refused to renew the lease.
John says that it was better to build a purpose-built race workshop with both engine dyno and build facilities on their property rather than rent another building and he hasn’t regrettedit.
While John has a background in engineering, it all started when he took up car racing in hisearlytwenties.
“I was quite competitive in the junior Formulas here, went to the UK, ended up working, not driving over there, and then whenIreturned,Imet mywife Trish,”saysJohn.
During John’s racing days he clocked up a few accolades
including 1984 Formula Ford Champion, seventh placing in the World Champion of Champions Race in 1985 held in the UK, two years driving in NZ Formula Atlantic, and two yearsspentworkingintheUSA inSuperVandAtlantic.
BackinNewZealand,Johnand Trish decided to set up a racing driver's school and ran it from the building they built at Ruapuna in 1990. They eventuallysoldthatpartofthe business and concentrated on the engineering side of their business.
“What was happening,” says John, “was we were teaching people to drive, and then they'd want to buy a car, so we'd end up doing the servicing on those cars and repairs. We're mainly geared for single seaters, both Formula Ford, which is a national/worldwide class, and historic Formula 5000. In fact, we've only just returned from doing two races in the UK. We sent four cars to do the race meetingsthere.”
Motorsport Solutions is
contracted by clients to maintain and run racing cars both in New Zealand and overseas. Trish is heavily involvedintheplanning.
“Wetakeateamofguystothe UK, USA, and Australia as required and look after the logistics – the hotels and all that sort of stu – we take all of that stress away from the client,"saysJohn.
Motorsport Solutions also undertakes repair work for agricultural machinery and aircraft maintenance. John is also a pilot, and a licensed aircraft engineer, hasbuilt four aircraft, and even has an airfieldontheproperty.
John’s passion for training young drivers and seeing them moveontobecomechampions is still a big part of his
involvement with the racing carindustry.
“It all comes from small beginnings, a lot of the guys that we've been involved with in the past are now Australian supercar drivers or competing in the Indy and other supporting racing leagues in America and/or working on teamsallovertheworld.”

As we move past the midpoint of winter, the local property market demonstrates resilience amidst seasonal challenges. Despite the traditionally slower winter months, Darfield’s property market has shown remarkable stability, driven by good demandforthearea.
There’s a steady flow of inquiries and property viewings, bucking the trend typically seen during the
colder season. The demand for properties in Darfield still remains high, with an increase of 50% for July 2024 in sales across Lifestyle, Residential & Sections compared to July 2023.
Several factors contribute to this sustained activity. Firstly, Darfield’s appealing rural lifestyle continues to attract buyers from urban areas, especially those looking for more space and a sense of community. The town’s proximity to Christchurch, approximately 45 km’s away, makes it an ideal location for those seeking a balance betweencityconveniencesand countrycharm.

Asweprogressthroughwinter,
the local property market remains a bright spot, showcasing resilience and continued demand despite the seasonal slowdown. This trend suggests a positive outlook for the remainder of the year, with potential growth and investment opportunities on thehorizon.

You have until August 18, 2024 to let Selwyn District Council know whether you agree with the Local Alcohol Policy as it is, or would like to see changes, through a short onlinesurvey.

“Our Local Alcohol Policy was adopted in 2017. Not only is it now due to be reviewed, but our district has developed and changed a lot since that time. We want to know if the policy is still fit for purpose or whether our community’s
expectations around the sale and supply of alcohol have changed.”

A very good day for shooting this month, clear and bright with no wind, although the late afternoon light and shadowsontraponemadethingsa bittrickyforsome.
Twenty-six contested the day and the eye-opener produced seven20/20scores.
On to the Continental Cup pretty quickly with three shooters scoring possibles. A longer than usual break for afternoon tea was taken, then
back for the second half of the Continental. Not so good this timewithnopossibles, however Dave Folley was able to follow up a possible with a 24/25 to score 49/50 to win the Continental Cup. Brian Johnson won the B grade with 48 and Dave Barber the C gradewith43.
Shoot-offs were required for the minor placings in all grades, which took a dozen targetsforeachgrade. Many thanks to all who helped
clean-up and the ladies who arrangedtheafternoontea.
Our next shoot is Sunday, September 1 with a 12:30 pm start–allwelcome.

When I was eight my Dad was taking me to see a movie. On the way there I asked him if he would buy me some gum.
He said, "No, you don't need any."
After arriving at the theatre and taking ours seats, Dad changed his mind. He told me it would be okay for me to have some gum and he was going to get it.
I spoke up and said, "You don't need to buy me gum anymore, Daddy. I found some under the seat."
Patient: "Doctor, what I need is something to stir me up... something to get me fired up and put me in a fighting mood. Did you put anything like that in this prescription?"
Doctor: "No, not in the prescription. You'll find that in the bill."
"How is your new job at the factory?” one guy asked another.
“I’m not going back there.”
"Why not?”
“For many reasons,” he answered.
“The sloppiness, the shoddy workmanship, the awful language – they just couldn’t put up with it."
