LAVALAVA COMES TO DHS
By Jessica Lal, Darfield High School Student.
By Jessica Lal, Darfield High School Student. Lal, High Lal, High
The Lavalava is a traditional Pasifika garment, mainly worn by boys in a formal matter. In Fiji, we call this garment a "Sulu Va Taga".
After watching the school’s 1st XV games, I noticed many players on the opposing team wore a Lavalava, with their school crest embroidered on the bottom corner, to the formalities after the games. As a FijianRotuman and as someone who has fought for more cultural representation of Pasifika students in my school and community, this inspired me to take it up with our principal, Mr England.
After a long email and countless classroom debates, Mr England proposed the idea at a board meeting and thus, the Lavalava was born. Not only does the Lavalava add diversity to our school uniform, but it also adds a unique aspect to our rural school.
It shows that Darfield High does care about Pasifika representation and the confidence of our Pasifika and Māori students.
Now Māori and Pasifika boys have the option of a more representative garment and something to show how proud they are to be an Islander.
Seeing the Lavalava in person was just a token of pride for myself and my people, I'm excited for the future for Pasifika students here at Darfield High and can only hope we go up from here.
"Ahakoa he iti, he ponamu" Although it is small, it is

MOVIE FUNDRAISER
An exciting evening of old wedding movies that feature localidentitiesisbeingheldon Saturday, July 20 at Trinity Church in Darfield. The movie evening is a fundraiser for the St Ambrose Anglican Church’s structural remediations in She eld, where the cost of getting the Church up to building code has been professionally estimated at $60,000.
The movies are from the Fred and Betty Bull collection: Weddings. Louise Woolf (Fred’s granddaughter) has spent many hours recording the weddings from the original reels and posting stills and movies onto the Canterbury Rural History Facebook page. This has generated a lot of interest and many weddings, which had previously unknown parties have now been identified.
The evening will show a selection of weddings via the original reels and organisers request the attendees to be seated by 5pm (doors open at
4.30pm). There will be a light supper at the conclusion at approximately 6.30pm and USBs of individual weddings canbeordered. Tickets are $20 each and prepurchase is advised via email: st.ambrose.nz@gmail.com, as seatsarelimitedto150.
There are over 80 weddings thatwererecordedbyFredBull Senior. The full list is available on the St Ambrose Church, She eld Facebook page. If a descendant is interested in purchasing a professionally copied wedding, there is an order form on the FB page that they can then email to
st.ambrose.nz@gmail.com or they can view and order at Te Huanui Gallery at Darfield. The cost is $200 for each wedding, which is professionally digitised on a USB, includes delivery and a $100 donation to St Ambrose. Additional USBs of the same wedding on the sameorderare$50each.
This fundraiser runs for eight weeks until August 20, 2024. The organisers thank Trinity Church and the Malvern Arts Council and volunteers at Te Huanui Gallery for their support of this fundraiser for theStAmbroseChurch..

FOUR SQUARE TURNS 100 SQUARE TURNS NATIONWIDE
The Four Square brand has been around for a while – who doesn't recognise the Four Square man, with his apron and pencil behind the ear. The brand originated in Onehunga, where businessman J Heaton Barker brought together local grocers to form a co-operative
buying group, eventually called Foodstu s. In 1948, the first Four Square Self-Service co-operative store opened. It was named Four Square because the group of independent grocers “... would stand ‘Four Square’ to all the winds that blew.” There are currently 223 stores nationwide – 60 in the South Island and 163 intheNorthIsland.

In the last three months, the Brigade attended 33 incidents - 15 structure fires including false alarms; six motor vehicle crashes; four minor incidents; five vegetation fires; two mobile property fires; and one medical.
Looking at these numbers, the motor vehicle crashes stick out as a highlight. This number is higher than everyone would like in a small district and space of time. This is a timely reminder to be safe out on the road particularly coming into the depth of winter where we

The judging process for the Gordon Stephenson Trophy
includes on-farm judging as well as a panel interview, with thetrophyrecipientsdisplaying a combination of an exemplar farming operation – from a financial, social, and environmental perspective –and the ability to articulate informed responses and insightful views on a range of pan-sectortopics.
Chair of the National Judging Panel, Karen Williams noted the exceptionally high calibre of Regional Supreme Winners, and said it was a privilege to heartheirstories.
“Hamish and Simon gave articulate, succinct and wellthought-out responses to all of our questions, and demonstrated a strong customer and market focus, with particular awareness of global markets and how our products are seen o shore,” saidWilliams.
“They have a strong focus on succession, with the idea of ‘making the pie bigger’ to ensure everyone in the family finds a niche and a place to operatetogether.”

Hamish and Simon Guild proudly display their awards after the pair were named as the 2024 National Ambassadors for Sustainable Farming and Growing and High Peak Station was announced the winner of the Gordon Stephenson Trophy at the National Sustainability Showcase at Claudelands in Hamilton in June.
WHEELCHAIR DONATION A LEGACY

The Canterbury Provincial, made up of Glenroy, Darfield and West Melton, closed in 2021. As part of its dispersion of funds a wheelchair was recently purchased and donated to the West Melton Community Centre. The wheelchair is a legacy from those women who served their communities in a bygone era.
Left to right: Bruce Russell, Beverley Pankhurst, Christine Anderson, Mary Watson, Alma Hughes, Joan Hale, and Kathleen Edge in the wheelchair.
After 82 years of playing a key role around women’s health and companionship, Rural Women West Melton closed its doors in 2019 due to a dwindling and aging membership.
The group had played an important part in the community assisting with many projects and fundraising.
Atthetime,MaryWatsonwas bothsecretaryofWestMelton and secretary of the CanterburyProvincial.
Mary says, “Communities have changed with many more organisations in the area, technology, andfamilies working out of the district, whereas once it was the only outing some women had to meetotherwomen.”
“On saying this,” she adds, “there is still a big need for communities to work together and meet up as you may be in a large community butknownoone.”
The Women's Division of Federated Farmers originally began nationally with the Home Nursing Scheme. Its
success had a significant impact on families in this district and nationally, becauseacommittedgroupof ladies volunteered countless hours to ensure that women and children in the district receivedhelpandcare.
“We should never underestimate the dedication of the ladies who ran that scheme,”saysMary.
A notable achievement, she says, was that it was the Canterbury Provincial in 1999,whichWestMeltonwas part of who took a remit to National Conference to have the name ‘Womens Division Federated Farmers’ changed to Rural Women New Zealand, whichitistoday.
Darfield and Glenroy Rural Women New Zealand are still activein the areaandMaryis nowamemberoftheDarfield group.
Rural Women New Zealand will celebrate 100 years in 2025.

A couple went to breakfast at a restaurant where the “Seniors' Special” was 2 Eggs, Bacon, Hash Browns and Toast for $12.99.
“Sounds good” the wife said to the waiter, “but I don't want the eggs.”
“Then, I'll have to charge you $14.50 because you're ordering a la carte”, the waiter warned her.
“You mean I'd have to pay for not taking the eggs?”, the wife asked incredulously. “Yes!”, stated the waiter.
“I'll take the special then”, the wife said.
“Great…how do you want your eggs?”, the waiter asked.
“Raw and in the shell”, the wife replied. She took the two eggs home and baked a cake.
