Selwyn is the fastest-growing district in New Zealand, and it islikelythat1in3peoplefrom this community will be impacted by cancer. Responding to this growing need for cancer support closer to home, the Cancer Society has expanded its cancer support sessions from a single centre in Rolleston to four local community clinics in Lincoln, Leeston, Darfield, and Rolleston.
Strong community support and local fundraising have allowed the Society to achieve this expansion, as these services are not government funded. The Cancer Society has seen a marked increase in referrals in Selwyn in recent months, further emphasising the need for accessible cancer care in thecommunity.
The Cancer Society is pleased to welcome Katie Gordon to the team as a Cancer Navigator. Katie brings a strong background in community health, having previously worked with Waitaha Primary Health, a large rural-focused PHO in Canterbury. Katie is excited to
join the team and looks forward to supporting families across the Selwyn community in their homes, our clinics, or online.
Selwyn Community Manager Aimee Cosgrove expressed excitement with the initial clinics, saying, “The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Families impacted by cancer appreciate our presence in their communities, which alleviates the stress of traveling long distances for support.”

The Collective's formation signifies a promising trajectory for environmental stewardship withintheSelwynfoothills. The collaborative e orts by farmers and community members are key in addressing ecological challenges, fostering sustainability, and improving management practices. With strong support from local authorities and funding from the Ministry for Primary Industries, theCollectiveiswell -positioned to implement sustainable land and water management strategies that willbenefit boththeecosystem and the local agricultural community. By uniting collective action and shared expertise, the Upper Waikirikiri Catchment Collective is set to make significant contributions to the region's environmental resilience and agricultural viability.

It's more thanacollaborativee ort;it'sa shared vision for a sustainable and thriving future in the Selwyncatchment."
The establishment of the Collective has received widespread support from various stakeholders, including local authorities such as the Member of Parliament Nicola Grigg, Selwyn District Council Mayor Sam Broughton, and CentralPlains WaterCEOSusan Goodfellow.
“Our coordinated e orts have secured funding from the Ministry for Primary Industries to assist farmers in monitoring water quality through testing and taking essential measures, such as wetland protection and riparian planting,” said Ken Wragg, afarmerandmemberof theWaikirikiricatchmentgroup.
“This initiative also provides
farmers with the necessary support and resources to complete individual farm environmental plans, thereby enhancing thelong-termhealth of the Waikirikiri catchment. It cultivates a sense of solidarity amongfarmers.”

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) has installed winter snow gates on either sideofPortersPass, oneofthe steepest and most elevated sections of SH73 linking the WestCoastandCanterbury. ItisalsoakeypartofSH73for people getting to the Canterbury ski-fields and CastleHill.
NZTA has operated winter snow gates successfully in several alpine locations in NorthandSouthCanterburyfor many years, including Arthur’s Pass, Burkes Pass (SH8) and the Mt Cook/Aoraki highway (SH80).
“The gates are a new tool to keep the public and our road crews safe either side of Porters Pass and to reduce delays for all road users,” says anNZTAspokesperson.
“The gates reinforce the road closurepointswhichultimately prevent people having to abandon their vehicles in heavysnow, gettingstuckorat worst, crashing. This means
fewer rescues and subsequent need for vehicle recovery, and our crews can concentrate on clearing the snow and opening the road, with much less delay forroadusers.”
The road closure points will still have tra c managers and road crews actively working nearby andemergency services will be let through and escortedwhenrequired. There will still be a ‘chains required’statuswithlightsnow whentheroadisnotclosed.
Winter 24/7 patrolling of the alpine SH73 highway by road crews started last week in line
with NZTA’s service aims over winter which remain unchangedfrompreviousyears for the Arthurs Pass/Porters Passroute.
Whathappenedlastwinter?
Last winter SH73 Porters Pass wasclosedfor35hoursintotal across numerous snow events and almost half this time was overnight. This is when the gates will be used in future, when there is a heavy dump of snow, andthe roadcrews need to work safely to clear it e ciently and quickly with no distractions.
