50TH JUBILEE CELEBRATED

West Melton Rugby Football Club celebrated 50 years of rugbyovertheweekendofMay 10-12, 2024. The Club was established following a meeting held in the West Melton Hall on August 20, 1973, with the first teams representing West Melton playing in the Ellesmere competition in the 1974 season with the club fielding a senior and three underage teams. The Club has now grown to fielding 20 teams in the 2024 season acrossallage groupsandfor the first time in many years has a Div 1, Div 2, Div 3, and Colts teams in the seniorcompetition.

The weekend included a Meet ‘n’ Greet on Friday evening with around 100 past and present players, administrators and supporters gathering at the Clubrooms as seven new life members were inducted intotheclub.

Saturday was Senior Club Day withallteamsplayingathome.

The Div 1 team had specially designed 50th Jubilee jerseys to wear for their game, which were later auctioned as a fundraiser for the club, raising more than $15,000.00. It was fitting that the Div 1 team was led by captain Ben Gameson, grandson of Ross Gameson, who was the player/coach of the inaugural 1974 West MeltonSeniorteam.

A long-time supporter of the Club andpast secretaryDoreen Holland collated a booklet for those attending to read about the history of the club through untiltheearly1990s.

The Jubilee dinner was held at the West Melton Community Centre on Saturday evening with close to 200 guests attending including Ross Gameson and Roger Hughes, who were members of the inauguralseniorteam.

There was a representation of family names such as the Holland, Neiman, Hale, Calder, Austin, Ryan, Pearce, Heiler and Butt families, including Club patron Graeme Hale and his wife Joan. Some of these families had been actively involved in fundraising for the construction of the Clubrooms intheearly1980’s.

Guests enjoyed a beautiful meal catered by local company, Verve Catering followed by guest speakers Sir Graham Henry and Mike Cron, thanks to the generous sponsorship of O’Connell BuildersandUntouchedWorld.

An entertaining Q & A session with “Ted and Crono” was followed by local band The Muppets (re-formed especially for the occasion), who entertained the guests for the remainderoftheevening.

LOCAL SKIER RISES ABOVE CHALLENGES

With winter fast approaching, Poppy Freeman (14) is preparing for another ski season after a successful Northern Hemisphere season. Travelling with her mum, Annabel, and oldest brother, Will, Poppy headed to Europe in January after receiving an invite to the 2024 Junior Freeride World Championship. This was awarded to her after taking out the NZ U18 women's Freeride skiing title lastyear.

To make the most of her time in Europe and to prepare for the world champs, after only one day on the snow, Poppy entered a regional freeride comp in Verbier, Switzerland, placing sixth. Due to bad weather over the next week, Poppy only got another four days skiing in between Chamonix, France, and Zermatt, Switzerland, before it was time to head to Kappl, Austriafortheworldchamps. By now the nerves began to kick in, especially with only

having five full days of skiing. Arriving in Kappl, Poppy was gladtofindthefourotherkiwis intheNewZealandTeamwere housedtogether.

The weather added more delays, pushing the competition further into the week. However, this allowed for a couple of days to get more skiing in, scope out the venue, check out the snow conditions and meet and ski with some of the best junior skiers from around the world.

In the evenings, workshops were also held on climate change, avalanche awareness, avalanche rescue, and freeride judging.

With no signs of the weather improving, the decision was made torun the event in awful conditions. Rain and wind had forced the resort to be closed, meaning the B option venue had to be used, with competitors having to be shuttledupinsnow-catsasthe lifts could not run. Awful snow conditions, an average venue, bad light, and gale-force winds

created challenging conditions to compete in, let alone being one of the youngest competing.

Poppy, however, managed to throw down an amazing line, landing herself in fourth place in the Junior Worlds. Poppy was chu ed to land her run (somethingtwoofherbrothers couldn't manage to do when they competed at the same event a few years back), to represent New Zealand on the world stage and have the opportunity of this amazing experience.

Now she is more driven than ever, ready to compete in the NZ freeride series this winter andhopefullygetaspotonthe team to head back to Europe again. Poppy is thankful for all the support she has received as it would not have been possible otherwise, including from her family, everyone who boughtoneofherra etickets and gave to her Givealittle page, Mt Olympus, NZJFT, and her sponsors Black Crows, Giro andRoxaBoots.

GREAT SUPPORT FOR GOLF CLASSIC

A bluebird day greeted golfers for the 19th annual Windwhistle Golf Classic. The event was held on Friday, May 10 at Fable Terrace Downs Resort as the annual major fundraiser for Windwhistle School. A large playing field of 147 golfers braved a frosty start and a fresh dusting of snow on the Mt Hutt range to enjoy perfect golfing conditions for the Ambrose tournament.

Eighteen holes of golf were interspersed with a homemade morning tea, a sponsored BBQ lunch and packed snacks for the course. The golf concluded with clubhouse drinks before the highly anticipated prize-giving, dinner and auctions ensued. In true community spirit, the generous crowd enjoyed an amazing array of tournament prizes and auction offerings. The 2024 tournament winners on the day were the PGG Wrightson team, consisting of Hamish Drennan, Alton Fletcher, Shaun Payne, Dan van der Salm and John Lindsay (McKeown Group). R&R Spreading Ltd came second with third placing to Philip Wareing Ltd and fourth placing to Norton Contracting Ltd.

A man walks into a bar, already drunk, and asks for a drink. “Sorry,” the bartender says, “but you obviously already had a little too much to drink.”

Fuming mad the man staggers out the front door and walks back in through the side door.

“Can I have a drink please?”

“Sorry,” the bartender says, “but you can’t have a drink here.”

The man staggers out again and then stumbles his way back in through the back door.

“Can I please have a drink?” “Enough!” the bartender screamed.

“I told you, no drinks!”

The man looks at the bartender closely and exclaims “Geez! How many bars do you work at?!”
