BOWLING

Congratulations to siblings Anna (16) and Evan Mangels (12) who won the Bowls Canterbury Secondary Schools Regional Pairs Championship last week in Christchurch.

The Championship is a tournament-based day where students compete and play for their school in Singles or Pairs Lawn Bowls games.

Bowls Canterbury Youth and Development Facilitator Erica Ayressays the secondary school singles and any combination pairs tournament was yet another hit this year.

“The competitive round-robin tournament was at Morrison Ave Bowling Club where six singles and six pairs teams across nine schools played,” says Erica. “It was awesome to see students enjoying themselves with great sportsmanship, etiquette, and a high skill level of bowls. Thank you to the club, helpers, markers, schools, and

parents for enabling our youth to participate in events like these.”

The talented pair, Anna and Evan, were first introduced to bowls when they filled in for their parent’s social bowls team that playseach season for around six weeks before Christmasand six weeks in the New Year. The social bowls competitionis run by the West Melton Bowling Club, as their annual fundraisereach year. Evan soon became a regular player in the team, due to his consistency and natural bowling style.

The Championship tournament involved playing five other secondary school teams, Evan wasthe lead and Anna was the skip. The games went on time and were one hour long each. Their toughestgame, theysay, was against St Thomas's, which ended in a draw. They won the other four games with some close battles.

Evan says he enjoyed the day and the experience. “Some of the games had intense moments. I was surprised but really happy that we finished up winning the championship.”

The tournament day was quite

competitive, which the pair didn'texpect. "To compete in the tournament with my brotherwas fun,” says Anna. “I was happy that we got a good result that we could be proud of.”

On Sunday March 24, The Darfield Fire Brigade station will be open to the public from 1pm to 3pm.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Jason Clemens says, “This is a great opportunity to come down and have a look through our new station, talk to the crew and

have a look at the displays including a kitchen fire trailer, kids (or adults) escape maze, Darfield Fire Museum and much more.”

Also available on the day is a chance to win a share of the 24m3 of pine firewood donated by Absolute

Firewood, Darfield.

“We have decided to run raffle for the firewood and there will be tickets available at the open day and around the town over the coming weeks,’ says Jason. “A huge thank you to Absolute Firewood for this verygenerous donation.”

DARFIELD FIRE BRIGADE UPDATE

By Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Chief Officer, Jason Clemens Jason JasonClemens Clemens Jason

It has been a busy start to 2024 for the Darfield Fire Brigade with 22 turnouts in the first two and a half months. Although this is slightly down on average the majority have been made up of large-scale vegetation fires outside the Darfield first response district.

The Natural Environment (Rural) appliances have been busy attending a few long duration incidents including the Port Hills Fire, Kirwee Train Track Fire, Old West Coast Road fires and

Amberly. These incidents required many resources and have been taxing on crews from around the Canterbury district.

In the last few months, we have welcomed new volunteers Jayden Frost and Rodrigo Macario. Jayden was previously with the Hawera Brigade in Taranaki and moved down to Darfield for work. After recently completing a retraining programme, he is now fully trained back to his Fire Fighter Rank. Rodrigo has joined as an Operational Support Fire Fighter and is looking forward to completing

Recentlywe also had FF Roger Mickelson complete his sevenday volunteer recruit course held at the Woolston training centre. Congratulations to Roger on this achievement and we look forward to seeing him come through the ranks in the years to come.

Lastly but certainly not least we have a few fire safety reminders. As we notice the days getting shorter and temperatures getting cooler it is a great reminder for those with solid fuel burners to make sure they are fit for service again after summer, this includes ensuring flues are clean, keeping flammable objects at safe distance and ensuring fuel is secure and not overloaded.

Daylight saving is upon us on April 7, so please test your smoke alarms. Also, a reminder that last week the Canterbury Plains entered into a restricted fire season. This means that open air fires will need to have a Fire Permit.

HELP A LITTLE HEART

A local family has been raising funds for Little Heart Day. Their initial goal was to raise $1000 and to date they are already heading towards the $2000 mark. Little Heart Day is held annually in March and is the fundraiser for Heart Kids NZ.

Thirteen-month-old Paige Payne was diagnosed with coarctation of the aorta during Emma Payne’s pregnancy.

Emma says, “We had to vacate

to Auckland from Christchurch for her delivery and she had open heart surgery on day three of life. Heart Kids were such an amazing support to us while we were there and have continued to support us on our journey.”

The Payne family first discovered Heart Kids with their first heart baby. “We lost our beautiful daughter, Blakely, to truncus arteriosus. Heart Kids were incredibly

supportive to us during that difficult time.”

Heart Kids NZ is the only national organisation supporting heart children in New Zealand and receives no government funding, relying solely on the generosity of the public to fund its services.

Heart families almost often face isolation, separation, loneliness, and financial hardship as they deal with the challenges of a childhood heart condition. Heart Kids NZ is there for these families every step of the way, providing vital support, at no cost, so they never face their journey alone. Every donation helps, no matter how big or small.

Emma, Colin, Wyatt, and Paige thank you in advance for your generosity. You can still donate to Paige’s fundraiser page at littleheartday.org.nz/ paige-payne or you can text PAIGE to 2427 to donate $3. Donations are open until April 15, 2024 and all moneyraised goes towards Heart Kids NZ.

NEW GROUP FOR VETERANS

A new group, the Malvern Veterans Group, has recently been formed for past and present military personnel.

The idea of the group says retired British soldier Brian Donnelly, of Waddington, was to provide a social and support group for people who have served overseas.

He says the group isn’t affiliated with the RSA and is more casual. “It’s a great opportunity to meet socially, share memories and experiences serving their respective countries on the

group’s local Facebook page, and help communities with local projects,” says Brian. Current or ex-serving soldiers are welcome to join the group - there are currently five members.

Group projects include the annual commemoration of Remembrance Day for those who fought and perished in WW1, helping organise the ANZAC service and parade in Sheffield, and most recently, with the help of some local ladies, leading up to ANZAC Day, the cleaning and

restoration of the memorial crosses near the Sheffield cenotaph.

Brian says they’re keen to hear from all serving and veteran personnel from the army, navy, airforce, police, fire and ambulance to take part in the service.

HORORATA 140 YEARS OF RACING HISTORY

Selwyn’s thoroughbred race day, Saturday, March 23, 2024, marks the 140th year of racing for the Hororata Racing Club, nowadays promoted as "Riccarton Park-Hororata".

The Hororata Racing Club was one of the earliest provincial Clubs after a meeting of 26 interested people at Hororata on September 20, 1884, formed a committee to run a race meeting at Hororata on January6, 1885.

Run under the Canterbury Jockey Club rules, the meeting was an eight-race programme for stakes of 135 sovereigns.

The inaugural Hororata Cup was won by Mr T Quill's ‘Grand Duke’ and was run for a purse of 40 sovereigns.

These early meetings at Hororata did not have a racecourse fully encircled by a running rail. Rails were erected only in the straight and on the bend leading into it with the rest of the course beings marked with manuka stakes. A running rail for the full course was not installed until the 1920s. A far cry from today’s safety conscious plastic versions. The original course can still be viewed today.

After the first meeting at Hororata, the railways manager was approached, and

he offered to put on an excursion train at special rates from Christchurch. This ran to Coalgate and carried both horses and patrons. They then walked the few miles to the course, before returning to the "young" city, leaving Coalgate at 5:30pm. A ‘Ladies Bracelet’ race was run at the very first meeting, and this was revived at the Centennial meeting in 1984. For that year and every year since, Petersens Jewellers of Bush Inn has donated a gold bracelet for a race. This much sought-after trophy is usually attached to a race for two or three-year-olds and causes

much discussion in this era of large syndicates owning horses. This year will be the 40th bracelet donated and is attached to the race for threeyear-olds.

The Hororata Racing Club operated at its own course for the first 80 years, then because of the requirement for extensive course improvements, and encouragement from racings governing body the NZ Racing Conference (now NZ Thoroughbred Racing) for centralisation, the Club arranged to rent the Riccarton Racecourse from 1965.

CAN ANYONE HELP?

The Malvern News was given a photo of the Hororata Racecourse stadium to go with a storyrecently but a reader was quick to advise the editorial team that the information stated in the caption was incorrect. The information came already on the image (as pictured) “Damaged in September 2010 and February2011 earthquakes. Subsequentlydemolished.”

If you can help out with the correct dates and any other information that the stadium was demolished, please email: news@malvernnews.co.nz.

FIX OR FLOAT? WHAT TO DO

ByGinnyNelson.

Fix or float, fix or float, fix or float? If you’re buying property, these are the words that will be going round and round in your head. Making an informed decision about whether to fix or float is one of the biggest questions you’ll face when buying a home. The right answer for you isn’t necessarily the one you’ll hear around the water cooler at work. Friends and family can’t always put themselves in your shoes. Nor is the correct answer always taking the lowest rate on offer, although it’s a win/ win when it works. The right decision is an informed decision.

Great reasons to fixinclude:

Great reasons to fixinclude:

• Stability. A fixed rate means you know exactly what you’ll pay month in month out for the length of the fixed rate period.

• Peace of mind. It’s hard to sleep easy if you live in fear of the home loan going up. Fixing your home loan rate levels out the fluctuations and you don’t need to worry about rate rises when others around you are stressing out

• No sudden shocks. No-one expects home loan rates to go back to 8 or 9 per cent again in a hurry. But should there be an unexpected financial shock such as the Global Financial Crisis, your

KIM HILL RETURNS TO LINCOLN

Lincoln Envirotown in conjunction with Lincoln University are happy to announce that the annual popular “Hot Topic” discussion will take place on March 28 at Lincoln University.

Full details and an invitation to register can be found by visiting Humanitix – Kim Hill Hot Topic 2024, or by visiting Lincoln Envirotown’s website or Facebook Page.

As per tradition, the wellknown Radio personality Kim Hill will lead a panel of experts who will discuss this year’s topic “PLASTIC – how do we live with it”. Once the panel have deliberated their varying

views, the audience will be invited to question panel members.

Issues relating to the problems associated with our overuse of plastic have been prevalent for many years and its disastrous impacts on ocean life are well catalogued. The panellists will discuss all issues relating to how essential plastic might be, our ability to reduce consumption, and our means of recycling the plastic we use.

The evening is always a wellattended stimulating and enjoyable occasion; all are welcome.

home loan rate will be protected until the end of the fixed rate period.

The downsides of fixing are: The downsides of fixing are: downsides of are: downsides of are:

• It’s a gamble. You may end up paying more overall than you would have if you’d stuck to a floating interest rate. But that can happen either way whether you fix or float. Not even economists can predict with complete certainty how interest rates will change.

• You’re stuck with the same lender. If another lender suddenly launches the home loan rate of a lifetime, you may not be able to switch to it until your fixed interest period ends.

• Breaking can be expensive. If you need to break your fixed rate you may be charged break fees bythe lender. At the end of the day, you need to decide what you can afford, how much certainty you need, and once you decide, don’t look back!

MARCHING SUCCESS

Melanie Beatty, from Darfield, has been marching since she was five years old.

Not surprisingly, her mum, Amanda, was involved in marching as a marcher, a coach, and a manager for close to 20 years.

After having a year off from marching Melanie joined Eclipse Under 18 this season. The team is made up of 16 girls aged 13-17 from all over the Canterbury region plus two extremely dedicated coaches and support team. The talented team trains two nights a week and competes most

weekends.

They recently competed at the Canterbury Championships held at Cowles Stadium and came away with Champion Team, Champion Technical and Champion Display. They also travelled to Hamilton to compete at New Zealand Championships and came away with third champion team, third technical and third display. The Championship showcases the sport at its very best, displaying all the hard work and dedication teams and officials put into training and

fundraising.

The Eclipse Under 18 team is now having a short rest before heading to Wellington in July, where they have been invited to perform at the New Zealand and Australia Marching and Drilldance Tattoo.

Eclipse is a Christchurch-based group of marching teams catering for all ages 4 and up. They pride themselves on being family friendly, striving for excellence, high standards, quality coaching, dedication, fun and always encouraging sportsmanship.

DARFIELD TOUCH WRAP-UP

It’s another season completed for Darfield Touch with a record year for the number of junior players with a good number of teams having had another great season of playing touch. Again there were 20 mixed competition grade teams and just over 300 junior year 1-8 players. The high school aged players/teams coming through are showing great improvement each year and many games were close in score.

There was an explosion of players in the junior grades, and seeing so many running around and enjoying their games was a delight. Along with the skills session for new players, there are six grades. The progress of skills in all players has been amazing to watch.

After many years, the module this season has affiliated back to New Zealand Touch and Canterbury Touch, which allowed players, if they chose, to trial for Canterbury rep teams. There were several junior and high school aged players who were successful in reaching these teams being:

• U18 Boys: Lucas Tapa-Wither

• U16 Girls: SkyPaterson and Taylah Brostow

• U14 Boys: Sonny-Bill McAndrew

• U12 Boys: Leon Brostow. Well done, to all of you! Congratulations to all the teams who played finals, the prize winners, and thank you to everyone who played for a great season. And a huge thank you also to all the volunteers who have made this season another successparents, coaches, managers, refs and those on the organising committee. Hope to see you all again next season.

LOCAL RIDERS GOING STRONG

Horse of the Year was held in Hastings from March 4-10.

Local riders Sam Partington, Dustin Rowlands, Sue and Rick Zydenbos rode in the Mounted Games discipline.

Teamwork impressive impressive

The first half of the week Sam and Dustin rode in the New Zealand Under 15 Pairs Championship, and after three sessions were just ahead in points heading into the final.

They excelled in the final, winning eight of the 10 races with most of those being a good half a pitch length ahead of second. The pair have been riding together for over six years now, and their teamwork is impressive.

The second half of the week

Sam and Dustin rode in the New Zealand Under 18 Teams Championship. Their team of five riders went into the final in first place and maintained

the lead throughout the final to take the win.

Sam and Dustin are heading to Italy in the New Zealand Under 18 World Team Championship in July this year and are aiming to also compete in Under 15 World Pairs Championship in France in August. They will be selling fundraising socks to raise funds for this trip, so if you see them around, please give them your support.

Local Sue Zydenbos competed in the New Zealand Veteran Pair Championship with her long-time pair Sue Shanks from Prebbleton. The Sues went into the final in second place and ended up third. The duo then rode together in the New Zealand Veteran Team Championship, with their team of five riders going into the final in first place and maintaining their substantial lead throughout the final to take out the Champion’s title. Sue's husband Rick Zydenbos also rode in the Veteran Teams competition, with his team placing second, taking out the title of reserve champions!

COMPETING WITH THE VERY BEST

Harriet Redmond, whose family live in the area, is currently competing in the 2024 SHCA Hufglocken Grand National Saddle Horse and Rider Championships in Sydney from March 19-23.

The prestigious event is being held at the Sydney International Equestrian Park. Harriet who lives near Ashburton, and has family in Malvern area, is excited to be competing as part of the NZ Show Horse Council team.

“I qualified for the team by being awarded a golden ticket at the NZ Show Horse Council Nationals in Taupo, January 2023,” says Harriet. She is competing in the over 21 and under 30 rider class and will be riding an Australian horse in the class.

Over 500 of the best show horses and riders qualify for this special event and converge annually to contest the titles under the watchful eyes of international judges. Harriet recently did well at the Horse of the Year Show in at

the Tomoana Showgrounds in Hawke’s Bay. She says she was so proud of her two horses Lakeview Sidestep (Corey) and Glenbrooke Flower Girl (Poppy).

“They were both foot perfect all week and I could not have asked any more of them. I’m

very lucky,” says Harriet. “It was a bonus winning my rider class in the Pinto section and Corey winning Reserve Champion lightweight/ middleweight Pinto. Thank you, New Zealand Pinto Horse Society Inc, for helping us get there.”

MALVERN U3A REPORT

Malvern U3A were pleased to host Susan Baldwin as its March speaker. Her topic was, ATour of the Chathams.

Susan is well-known to many in the district, having been the Anglican Vicar for many years with ministry in the Chatham Islands during that time.

The Chatham Islands lie 840 kms west of Christchurch and are still connected to New Zealand, with the greater part of the continent underwater.

Susan says when she first went to the Chathams, she was introduced to a saying “God made the world and with the leftovers he made the Chatham Islands “.

The Chathams were first settled by East Polynesians arriving by waka/canoe in the 1400s and they brought a distinct lifestyle and culture that developed into the Moriori. They named the islands, Rekohu.

The name was changed to Chatham islands by Lieutenant William Broughton in 1791 when he landed on the islands on the brigantine CHATHAM and claimed the islands for Britain and King George the third.

The main industry of the island is fishing and farming

with the current population of between 650 and 700. There is a diverse landscape and geology to be seen on the islands from north to south. In the north are volcanic cones over peat with schist and sand dunes, the south is old lava flows, and the central area has underlying limestone.

We were treated to an excellent slide show of the scenery and wildlife of the Chathams, following not only the coastline but forgotten roads and tracks. The slides included elephant seals and wild pigs and many of the

island’s bird life including weka and a giant petrel and, surprisingly, a family of emus. So many interesting facts, so much wildlife to mention here but it looks like a trip to the Chathams should be on everyone’s bucket list. Susan finished her talk with her experiences of a traditional Chatham Island funeral that she attended. An excellent morning’s education and entertainment. Come and join us at our April meeting to learn about Rewa Alley, “An Extraordinary New Zealander”.

MARSHWORT SPOTTED LOCALLY

A recent visit to a garden in West Melton has led to the discovery of the pest entire marshwort growing in a private pond. A keen-eyed community member had remembered being shown an entire marshwort plant by a noxious plants officer some years ago and was advised to report any potential sightings. Fortunately, he promptly shared this knowledge and reported the suspected sighting to Environment Canterbury(Ecan).

The plant was confirmed, and since removed from the pond inWestMelton.Thesitewillbe checked in time to make sure the plant hasn’t grown back.

Ecan staff will also investigate leads on where the plant originatedfrom. Whattolookoutfor Whattolookoutfor Entire marshwort is an aggressive invader of aquatic environments such as rivers, lakes, andwetlands.

Another common name is the fringed water lily, due to the distinctive fringed yellow flower petals that can be visiblefromlate spring tomidautumn.

It forms dense mats, easily outcompeting native vegetation and choking up waterwayaccess.

Ecan suggests that you report any potential sightings.

Invasive species advisor Dr

Anysightings of entire marshwort/nymphoides geminata should be reported to Environment Canterbury.

Morgan Shields says that reportingapotentialpesttous is the right thing to do even if you’reunsure. "We would rather receive reports of the 'just in case' species than someone deciding it’s nothing and not reporting at all. We're more than happy to identify plants or pests that people aren’t sure of. Everyone plays an important role in Canterbury’s biosecurityefforts".

OUTSTANDING SERVICE

Earlier this week at the South Malvern Miners Cricket Club (SMMCC) prizegiving, Peter Cullen and Hamish Wright were awarded life memberships to Club for their outstanding service to junior cricket.

SMMCC life member Dave

Beatty presented the life memberships to the pair and says, “It was a great honour to present Life Membership Awards to Peter and Hamish on Sunday. The pair first introduced junior cricket at the club nine years ago and have

been instrumental in coaching young cricketers and setting them up on a pathway for future development.”

During this time Peter and Hamish have introduced over 100 new junior cricketers to the game. “They have also played big roles in keeping the club financially viable, along with playing coach, manager, and groundsman … the list goes on,” says Dave. “The Club thanks you both for your services.”

DARFIELD PREMS MAKE CRICKET FINAL

The Plains Plumbing Gas and Drainage Darfield Premier Cricket team secured their fourth final in as many seasons after a 39 run win over Peninsula-Harbour at Tai Tapu on Saturday.

Heavy rain on Friday night caused a delayed start as the pitch surround was saturated meaning the game was reduces to 42 overs per innings.

A lost toss meant Darfield was

put into bat on a wicket that has been covered for nearly 48 hours and things got worse when NZ Under 19 player Robbie Foulkes was out in the first over.

Nick Gilbert and Jesse Frew adjusted their approach to suit the soft and holding pitch to slowly build their scores. Low risk batting and solid defence was required but they both fell, after making good starts, just after the halfway drinks

break. Ryan Hughes entered and was brutal on any short balls from the spinners but the pitch was still a major factor despite the drying sun. Nick Jenkins made a valuable contribution through the middle but when he fell at 110 the tail could only muster another 39 runs to get the team total to 149 and sinfully bowled out inside 42 overs.

Peninsula-Harbours start was slow and watchful knowing they surely only had to bat their full overs and the match would be theirs. Batters faced ample deliveries but wickets were frequent enough especially from Nick Jenkins.

Jenkins captured the big wicket of Joe Williams for seven with the team score at 25/3 and Darfield got their tails up with some good catching and energetic fielding.

Two minor partnerships kept the game alive until Captain Ryan Hughes brought on Isaac Earl ahead of the seamers.

Earl landed beautifully flights leg spinners that tempted the batters into slog sweeps but instead snuck under the bat to shatter the stumps. His two wickets essentially sealed the game at 94/9 then the last wicket fell at 110.
