A WIN FOR YOUNG FARMERS LOCAL

A Darfield Young Farmer is one step closer to winning one of New Zealand’s most prestigious farming awards after being crowned the Season 56 Tasman FMG Young Farmer of the Year.

George Dodson, 22, was announced as the Tasman FMG Young Farmer of the Year on Saturday evening, following two days of fierce competition in Christchurch. Now, he gears up to take on six other regional finalists in the ultimate showdown at the FMG Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final, being held in Hamilton in July.

The weekend’s event was one of seven Regional Finals happening across Aotearoa between February and April. Details of what challenges would be thrown at them at the Tasman event were kept under wraps from the 22 determined contestants.

The win comes as a shock to George, who was humbled by the achievement.

“To be honest it hasn’t sunk in yet, it was such a shock, I

can’t really believe it to be honest!” says George.

Originally from Southland, George is second in charge on a 430-cow dairy farm between Darfield and Dunsandel. This is his third time competing in the prestigious contest, and the first time he’s earned a place at the Grand Final.

“The weekend was intense, there was definitely some stuff in there that was beneficial to me, and it was great that Saturday was practical based,” explains George. “The head-to -heads were a great challenge; I didn’t expect to be loading AI straws, so it was cool to be doing something different.”

Seeing his name at the top of the leaderboard going into Saturday night’s buzzer quiz, George says the pressure came on.

“When I saw that I was leading before the quiz, my family said I went pale white!” he says.

“The pressure was on, but luckily I smashed the quickfire round so could settle into it a bit more after that.”

George is looking forward to competing at the Grand Final and is excited about testing himself against the best of the best.

“I found the exam and some of the technical aspects of the weekend a bit of a challenge, so that’ll definitely be a focus for me in the lead-up to July.”

TOP TEAM AT GLENTUNNEL SCHOOL - MĀTAI RANGATIRA

Glentunnel School recently hosted the Top Team event for Year 5/6 Malvern Primary Schools with 241 tamariki attending and 20 kaimahi (staff) and parents. The event had been cancelled for the past three years due to Covid restrictions or severe weather conditions on the day. Top Team is run by Primary Sports Canterbury and coordinated by Renae Fitzgibbon.

Glentunnel School principal Ed Trotter says, “We had fourteen Year 5 teams and eighteen Year 6 teams, 32 teams in total competing at 16 different event stations. Seven Malvern contributing kura (Hororata, Glentunnel, Springfield, Sheffield, Windwhistle, Darfield Primary and Kirwee) were involved in the event with teams of eight being mixed in school and gender. Each team earned points at each station and the overall winner was the team with the highest points. Team 6Q took out top place with 587 points for the 16 events - ka pai!”

Top Team is a series of interactive team building challenges designed to promote problem-solving, communication and teamwork while being active and having fun. Students are teamed up and compete against one another to be the Top Team!

The event is unique in that it is designed with all abilities,

including those with disabilities in mind. This helps take away the ‘intimidation’ factor of physical activity and increases confidence amongst non-participating rangatahi to take part in future events. Top Team encourages maximum participation and fun!

Principal Ed Trotter says it was a wonderful day of fun, friendship, collaboration,

connectedness, and problem solving for Year 5/6 tamariki in Malvern, who worked really well together.

“Many thanks to Primary Sport Canterbury (Renae and Georgia), kaimahi from all the kura and parent helpers on the day. We are already looking forward to next year's annual event on Friday 14 February2025.”

GET YOUR KNITTING NEEDLES OUT

This year’s Homecraft section at the Malvern A&P Show is running another special class encouraging competitors to knit or crochet a beanie in wool for a baby or young child –newborn to four years old. Following the success of the knitted toy lambs last year, this year’s entries will be donated to the Kiwi Family Trust (KFT) in Christchurch. The Trust aims to help keep babies and children warm and give knitters, many who live alone, a purpose and inclusion to help combat social isolation.

The class is free to enter, and the organisers of the section would love to beat last year's amazing total of 52 entries.

If you’d like to knit a beanie but not compete individually in the show, you can still knit

and donate your beanie as part of a 'Darfield community' mass entry.

CHILD CANCER FOUNDATION URGES KIWIS TO DONATE

On Friday 8 and Saturday

9 March, Child Cancer Foundation’s volunteers will take to the streets across Aotearoa to raise vital funds to support tamariki with cancer and their families.

“Every week this year, three Kiwi families will be told the heartbreaking news that their child has cancer,” said Child Cancer Foundation’s Chief Executive, Monica Briggs.

“Your donation will directly fund personalised support for each family, helping them overcome the immense challenges that come with having a sick child.”

To ensure each family living through childhood cancer in New Zealand receives the support they need, Child Cancer Foundation needs to

raise at least $6 million each year.

They receive no funding from the government, so they rely on the generosity of everyday New Zealanders to help these families through the toughest time of their lives.

“Whether it funds a delivery of groceries, a petrol voucher or a listening ear of support, every dollar will help provide life-changing assistance,” said Monica.

The annual Street Appeal is one of Child Cancer Foundation’s biggest fundraising campaigns of the year. You can do your bit to help Kiwi kids with cancer and their whānau by donating when you see the Foundation’s volunteers in your area on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 March.

KEEPING OUR COMMUNITY INFORMED

Selwyn is growing and thriving.

The Malvern Community Board covers an area from Highfield Road and the Selwyn River north to Arthur’s Pass, which includes many rural communities. The Board is a point of contact for the local community and the Selwyn District Council.

Our role is to work collaboratively with the Council and the people of Malvern, so community goals can be achieved. We aim to provide

value to Council on one hand and the community on the other hand. In this, we are assisted by the two Malvern Ward Councillors – Bob Mugford and Lydia Gliddon. The Board held its first meeting of the year last week. We are prepared for the busy year ahead working with our communities to identify what is best for Malvern. Some issues are community facilities and halls in the Ward and facilitating feedback from the community on the Long-Term Plan consultations in April.

Last month we had a helpful meeting with community and

resident associations. Further meetings will be held to strengthen these important relationships and connections and address issues of concern, such as the identified lack of services in rural areas. We work with and advocate for the community to the Council and other community organisations, so working together we can make Malvern a great place to live, work, and play that people will want to live, visit, and enjoy what we have, which is good economically.

QUIZ NIGHT BACK

Another great night was enjoyed by all at the eighth quiz night hosted by the Darfield Tennis Club, with the quiz run by Rob and Jane Potts. This was the first quiz in four years due to Covid and other factors. Twelve teams

competed for the first pick of the prize pool, donated by generous sponsors.

A closely fought battle was won by ‘Highly Strung’Courtenay, followed by ‘Melton Down’ - West Melton and very close behind them ‘Kowhai

Drivers’ - Darfield. After a great supper, prepared by Sally and Tony Pearson, everyone went home with at least one raffle prize.

Spokesperson Rob Potts says, “We would like to thank the other Malvern tennis clubs for supporting us, a team from the Grain and Grape and the Malvern Hillbillies Cycling group. But most of all we thank the commercial community who donated lots of prizes. We can only host 12 teams, so if you missed out, make sure you get in early for registering a team for next year.”

“We collected our target of about $1,500 that will go half way to paying for insurance and rates.

This means the community will soon be invited to give feedback on the Council’s proposed work plan for the next 10 years – and how it might get the funding to deliverit.

The public consultation period will run from March 13, 2024, until April 14, 2024. There will be several ways to provide submissions, including through ecan.govt.nz/whatsthecost.

This week the News asked MidCanterbury’s ECAN Councillors Ian McKenzie and John Sunckell to comment on how the proposal affects our area, benefits, etc and the importance of people having theirsay.

Ian McKenzie says there are four main areas of substantial cost increases that, in his view, that the community should reflect on– the first being river andfloodmanagement.

“We have a three-pronged strategy for how we are trying to update our river management from the old catchment board model to better reflect the change in land use, the value of assets now protected or in need of protection, the public benefit in protecting community connectivity by protecting roads and bridges etc., and other lessons welearntfromthe'21floods.

The first part of our strategy is how we fund river management. We have developed a compelling case for central government to assist with the capital cost of upgrading our community protection to cope with one in 200-year flood events. To do

this we have developed our 30-year river infrastructure plan that sets out what needs to be done across the region and how much we think it will cost. These costs are embedded in the rate rise and varyacrosstheregion.

The second part is making sure we have the best local organisational structures in place. This (with the community's support) means a move to managing the whole river system rather than the current patchwork catchment board approach. In response to the Selwyn district's requests, we are moving to start implementing this approach for the whole of the Selwyn catchment. This means in the first year of this LTP, there is a small district-wide rate proposed to be collected on top of the old river rating scheme rates. Over the next few years, we're proposing to move from the rating district model to a two-tier model of a district-wide rate and a rate on land that directly benefits from the flood protection. This proposal has been discussed

with many groups within the Selwyn district and I'd like to think what we are proposing reflects that feedback and will be supported. The new approach will allow us to manage the whole of the river system including maintaining flood channels that might be dry eight years in 10 but are critical for controlling flood flowsinthewetyears.

The third leg of our strategy is addressing those blockages or cost areas that get in the way of allowing our rivers teams from getting work done. My analysis would suggest that for every dollar we collect to spend on rivers, 60 cents is spent on consenting, compliance, monitoring and reporting. Some of these requirements are imposed on us by central government, some by zealous NGOs and some by our own internal processes; but they all add to the rates burdenyou are asked topay.”

CENTRESTAGE CELEBRATE MILESTONE YEAR IN STYLE

Clocking up thousands of volunteer hours, more than a dozen fabulous shows and the best talent to grace a Selwyn stage, CentreStage Rolleston has come a long way in just five years.

Chair and founding member Phil Dean says 2024 is going to be a big year for the theatre company. “Over the years we’ve done some amazing shows, from After Hours: From the Twenties to the Twenties and Chicago, to Bonnie & Clyde and Calendar Girls. We started off small, with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Rolleston Primary School. Now we’re getting ready to put on one of our biggest productions yet.”

Phil says those involved in CentreStage Rolleston over the years do it because they all

have one thing in common - a love of theatre. “Be it singing, acting, or dancing. Sometimes even all three! We’ve had young people, and people a little older than me involved in all sorts, from behind the scenes to right out there on centre stage. We wouldn’t be celebrating our fifth birthday if it wasn’t for all the support we have received over the years, and that includes the wonderful support we get from those who come along to our shows.”

Born out of a simple idea to bring theatre to Selwyn, CentreStage Rolleston has gone from strength to strength. In 2024, the theatre company will put on three big shows and host a brand-new singing competition. Starting with what’s possibly

one of the most well-known Disney movies of all time, Mary Poppins will come floating into Rolleston College from April 18-27 and promises to be quite simply supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Tickets are on sale now for this show and are selling out fast.

In May, the theatre group will welcome young singing superstars as it hosts for the first time Illuminate, what’s thought to be Selwyn’s first performing arts competition for those aged 18 and under. Rangatahi can find out more and register on the website.

In July, crowds will bear witness to the mystery of Agatha Christie's masterpiece, The Mousetrap, the longestrunning playin history.

And what comes after that?

“Well, we have to keep something up our sleeves,” Phil says. Get along to support CentreStage Rolleston as they celebrate their best year yet.

SELWYN, TELL US WHAT YOU THINK

Flooding is New Zealand’s most frequent natural hazard which is going to accelerate further with climate change.

The big Canterbury flood event of May 2021 and subsequent smaller events have had a significant impact on our region over the past couple of years. We are now nearing the completion of repairs to our critical infrastructure, butthereisstill moreworkto do to getbetter prepared for the next event.

Post the 2021 event, we trialled a small regional budget to help finance works outside of our 58 dedicated river and drainage rating districts. This was successful and our preferred option makes a regional budget permanent. It is possible that with time, smaller rating districts could be folded into this approach to streamline services, create efficiencies and enable us to be more focused on whole of catchments.

As part of our preferred option, we would like feedback on a proposed targeted rate specific to the Selwyn district for district-

widefloodandriverresilience work. We have heard that more dedicated support and increased work across the district is desired, therefore weareproposing a dedicated Selwyn district work programme that starts in 2024/25(Year1oftheLongTermPlan).

This is in addition to flood and river resilience workright across the region. The six dedicated river and drainage rating districts within, or partially within the Selwyn district would remain at this stage. Our future intention is that they will be folded into one holistic approach for the district.

Selwyn, do you agreethat we should have an additional targeted rate for district-wide flood and river resilience work?

Have your say between Have your say between your your

NATURE INSPIRED LATEST CHILDREN’S PICTURE BOOK

The landscape was the inspiration for Selwyn author Alyse Boaz’ latest children’s picture book, The Gonnstirr Monsters of Gonrockman.

“Let our imaginations free and we’ll see a myriad of images in rocks, trees and the sky,” says Alyse, who likes to photograph rock formations and unusual looking trees and driftwood.

The Gonnstirr Monsters of Gonrockman is a fun story with an element of scary. Alyse says the story took time to evolve as she developed the rhyme. Sound words have also been included to build language skills plus a page on beach safety. She says the story has an underlying message about observing instructions.

“Harry and Flynn sneak out at night in search of adventure, instead they get a fright! But,” she adds, “all ends well.”

Alyse regularly visits schools, preschools, and libraries to read her stories to the

children and talk about the topic of each book or how her books were created.

“Connecting with children is rewarding. Budding young authors show me their stories and ask for feedback. Our schools are full of talented young people. I feel blessed to be able to encourage and inspire them.”

Alyse has included a fact page in each of her books, so visits become educational and fit with the school curriculum. In preschools, she focuses more on entertainment with a little learning.

“I’ve become very expressive when I read to young people. With older children, I enlist their help in reading the story, emphasising the importance of emotion and drama in the way we read. It’s great fun.”

SWIMMING RECORDS BROKEN

Four new records were broken by Darfield High School students at the 2024 Swimming Sport Champs.

Lucas Anson broke the following records in the Intermediate Under 16 Boys section:

• 50m Backstroke, time of 32:22 beating E. Taylor record of 33:34 set in 2018;

• 100m Backstroke, time of 1.08:78 beating E. Taylor 1.12:56 set in 2018;

• 100m Freestyle, time of 1.02:28 beating A. Wangprapa (International student) 1.3:09 set in 2004.

Jade Henshaw broke the record for the 50m Butterfly Senior Girls over 16 time of 32:34 beating C. Newbigging 33:06 previouslyset in 2021.

The event had a great turn out considering the cold weather with over 110 students participating.

Darfield High School sports co-ordinator Pip Deans says, “It was awesome to see the students competing in the races and putting their all into it and it was an exciting day for a couple of our students as they broke records. Overall, it

was an amazing day. Thank you to all teachers that helped and thank you to Y12s for your help as well.”

going to be taken off the heart monitor in a couple of hours and, if she conAnues this improvement, Dr. Weiss is going to send her home Tuesday at noon."

"Thanks” the woman said. "That's wonderful! Oh! That's fantasAc, what wonderful news!" The nurse said, "From your enthusiasm, I take it you must be a family member or a very close friend!"

"Not exactly," the woman said. "I'm Sarah Cohen in 302! Nobody here tells me anything."
