RIDING FOR AWARENESS

Oxford local Wendy Gerritsen is riding her horse, Anmoch, around the South Island to raise awareness of ovarian cancer. She and Anmoch will begin their “Ride 4 Awareness of Ovarian Cancer” journey leaving Oxford A&P grounds at 12pm Saturday, February 3 after MP Matt Doocey speaks and officially starts the ride. Wendy will ride to Sheffield and stop at Sheffield Primary School and at Springfield, 17 Domain Road, and her horse float with information about ovarian cancer will be parked at the Springfield Domain near the donut on SH73. February is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Wendy has ovarian cancer and knew nothing about it until it was nearly too late. Typical of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer, Wendy saw several GPs over the years with symptoms but felt she wasn’t being listened to. She feels that there urgently needs to be

more awareness and research done on ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer has the highest death rate of all gynaecological cancers in New Zealand. Smear tests are only for cervical cancer and do not detect ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer has symptoms that are easily dismissed for other ailments. Approximately 300 women are diagnosed every year and 200 die every year, this needs to change. Wendy invites people to come and listen to Matt’s speech, saddle up and ride with her, or come and find out about

Wendy’s sponsored Horse Float.

ovarian cancer by visiting her sponsored horse float offering information and a selection of Melwood Horse Blankets for sale. There is also an opportunity to show your support by donating to the

Ovarian Cancer Foundation. You can follow Wendy’s progress and dates on her FB page ‘Ride 4 Awareness of Ovarian Cancer’ or look out for her sponsored Horse Float.

Wendy Gerritsen and her horse, Anmoch, plan to raise awareness around ovarian cancer with a ride through townships in the South Island during the month of February.

NEWS FROM MALVERN COMMUNITY ARTS COUNCIL (MCAC) MCAC Executive committee thanks the Malvern community for the support received from the community for Darfield Artweek, Preforming Arts performances, and Te Huanui Art Gallery in Darfield. The summer exhibition at the gallery has been amazingly popular, the positive feedback, number of visitors and sales have well and truly exceeded our expectations. We hope to have the continued support from the community for the planned exhibitions and performances during 2024. An essential element to being able to present arts to the Malvern community is the work completed by our team of volunteers, without their passion and interest in the arts we would not be able to present the art experiences

that we do. One of our key volunteers, Alistair Nicol has decided that after more than 10 years as treasurer the time is right for him to hand over the budgets, reports, and banking to someone else. The process of transition is underway. Kristy Peel, a long-standing member of MCAC will also be departing with the pending relocation from Darfield. Her experience and input into MCAC have been valued and appreciated. This will be a time of change for MCAC as we update our policies, processes, rules, and constitution to ensure we continue to meet the requirements for Incorporated Societies and Registered Charities. Part of these changes will also include mo vin g to an on lin e

accounting system. Our AGM will be in April; however, we need to have a new treasurer in place and working alongside Alistair prior to the AGM. If you are interested in becoming the next treasurer for MCAC please contact either Rob Lawrence, MCAC chair 027 286 9007 or Julie Shanks 021 173 2393 co-chair Te Huanui Gallery. There are many ways people can be involved with MCAC, we have our Exec and sub committees for Artweek, Performing Arts and Te Huanui Art Gallery in Darfield plus volunteers who support each of these committees and activities. Our AGM will be in April we are asking members of our community to consider joining the MCAC, if you are interested, please contact us.

SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR COMMUNITY PATROL The volunteer Malvern Community Patrol has had a successful year with over 1400 hours of patrolling undertaken and some 22,000 kilometers travelled by its’ members. Working closely with the local police, the Patrol covers the area including Darfield, Kirwee, Greendale, Hororata, Glentunnel, Sheffield and

Springfield with regular patrols, and assists police in specific instances as required. The Selwyn district has a low crime rate, and the Patrol aims to assist in keeping it a safe environment to live in. While the Patrol cannot respond to specific incidents, chairman Harvey Polglase urges people to report any criminal activity to the police,

who can then advise if they would like the Patrol to keep an eye on particular areas. Harvey says, ‘We are pleased with the excellent support the Patrol gets from local businesses and the residents, as well as the voluntary efforts of Patrol members, who willingly do their bit to ensure a safer community’.

JAMBOREE A CHALLENGE BUT FUN Five members of Darfield Scouts along with their scout leader Wendy Cridge joined the Rolleston Wonderland Troop and traveled with the contingent to Mystery Creek for the 23rd NZ Scout Jamboree over the New Year. Around 4,000 scouts attended the Jamboree from all over New Zealand, where contingents from the South Pacific, Australia and Korea also attended. The Darfield scouts thoroughly enjoyed themselves with many activities, learning new skills, and making new friends. Each troop (36 scouts and their leaders) were responsible for organizing their campsites, keeping them tidy, cooking meals, washing, and safety. The troops were evaluated on their perfor mance, with two Rolleston troops gaining the top-level Pounamu award. During the day, the scouts were in small teams with their

These included archery, shooting, quad biking, paddle boarding, kayaking, sailing, rock climbing, abseiling, tyrolean, mud challenge, biking and building bottle rockets. Life skills activities included first aid, environmental (waste management) and community involvement (neighbourhood support and civil defence). All the Scouts learned independence, having to take responsibility for themselves and their gear and getting to activities on time. Working in small teams was a major part of the Jamboree. The Scouts summarized their experiences at Jamboree: • William, “excellent, Interesting, wished it never ended” • Ryan,” adventurous, amazing, tiring but fun” • Jamie, “challenging, meeting

new friends, exploring new activities” • Cooper, “Jamboree was so much fun! The activities were interesting, and I especially enjoyed kayaking and swimming. The whole experience was amazing” • Caitlyn, “Jamboree was challenging but great fun! A once in a lifetime opportunity. It has boosted my confidence in exploring out of my comfort zone, especially with heights and water activities. I’ve made new friends from all around NZ and Australia.” The Darfield Jamboree Scouts would like to give a big thank you to the Malvern Lions and Selwyn Council for grants and to all those in the community who supported them in their fundraising efforts. This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that these scouts will never forget.

SELWYN MP UPDATE With Nicola Grigg Happy New Year Selwyn! I hope everyone has had a wonderful start to 2024. I have been enjoying life as a new mother to our son Geordie. Thank you to everyone for the kind messages following his safe arrival, our family is very appreciative, and we are all doing well. I intend to be back to my duties in the electorate in the coming months and will return to my ministerial duties as soon as I’m able. In the meantime, my office and colleagues have been busy progressing with the Government’s 100-day plan. There is a full agenda over the next few weeks, and we are working tirelessly to give New Zealander’s what they asked for. To reflect on what has already been ac c om pli sh ed, a highlight for Selwyn would have to be the ending of the Ute Tax. As of New Years Day, hardworking kiwis who rely on a Ute to work are no longer unfairly taxed because of it. We said all along it would disproportionately affect farmers and tradies, and by repealing this legislation we

are showing our support to the backbone of our country and economy. We have made significant progress with redacting the highly contested RMA reforms that Labour forced through Parliament last term by successfully repealing the Natural and Built Environment Act and Spatial Planning Act. These repeals (and eventual replacements) will help builders, developers, and farmers, while ensuring protection of our environment as we undertake a forwardleaning approach to land use and infrastructure. We have also amended the speed limit rules as part of our commitment to stop blanket speed limit reductions which have caused uproar across the country. Work has already begun on a new Rule, which will ensure that when speed limits are set, economic impacts and the views of road users and local communities are considered, alongside safety. In a matter of weeks this Government has displayed its vision for New Zealand. We want to promote growth and innovation, retract unnecessary restrictions and

compliance, and grow a healthy economy so we can enjoy better public services. In addition, we have already started meeting with our overseas partners to get New Zealand’s name back on the international agenda. Trade and Agriculture Minister Todd McClay has recently paid a visit to India and is currently travelling to Geneva and Dubai as part of our mission to improve and create trade opportunities for New Zealand businesses. In other economic news, the Government restored the Reserve Bank’s single focus on price stability, while reducing regulatory burden on business and restoring discipline in government spen d in g. In flati on is beginning to fall, and we want to see this trend continue. We set out on an ambitious task to get our country back on track and we are determined to deliver. While there is so much left to do and complete within our 100-day plan, we will continue to work for New Zealander’s and will stay engaged with our communities along the way.

#18 Julia Chamberlain, Longest Day Elite Female. A strong competitor in this year’s Coast to Coast, Julia Chamberlain is seeded eighth in the Longest Day Elite Female competition. Asked what inspired her to enter this year’s Coast to Coast, Julia says “I raced the Longest Day last year and thoroughly enjoyed it and did quite well doing so. The goal is to go faster across all disciplines and see where that takes me.” This will be Julia’s fifth time on the start line. She says the most challenging part of training for the event is the fatigue from increased training load. “But as you will all know, it's been a very windy summer in Darfield/Canterbury, so that has been challenging but made me stronger.” Julia is looking forward to starting the race. She says, “Goats Pass an d the Waimakariri Gorge are two of my favourite places in the country, so I am looking forward to racing through those two sections”. When asked what she least looked forward to, Julia says, “the race being over”. Julia has grown up watching the race - initially outside her grandparent’s place on the Old West Coast Road. “It's in my blood. It's a great day not only for me but for my family and friends so it's incredibly important to do,” she says. #778 Dan Van Der Salm and Gregory Wall, Men’s Veteran (Two Day Two Person) Dan Van Der Salm entered this year’s Coast to Coast Two Day Two Person team event after his mate, Gregory Wall, got him at a “weak moment” after he competed in last year’s Three-Person team event. He says he always wanted to be able to call himself a ‘multi-

sport athlete’ and to test the limits of the body. “What better way to put yourself to the test. This is a very much a physical test of the body, but more so a mental test and pushing yourself to levels you didn’t know you could be so satisfying”. Dan had originally agreed to compete in the race 12 years ago but says that life got in the way and “the stars didn’t align for several years, eventually we ran out of excuses so had to give it a crack, loved it so much that we stepped it up a notch this year”. Training for the event is a balancing act between family, work, and training. “If winning the event was our main goal, then training would consume us, so it was important to both Greg and myself to ensure we trained hard, but also maintained the balance without busy lives. Obviously the closer we get to the start, there is always more we could have done, but ultimately just getting out there and testing ourselves is the main goal – and remaining married was also important!” Dan is looking forward to finishing, going out for dinner with the family, having a nice cold beer and not getting all caught in the hype and committing to another year. “It’s the just reward for the hours of effort and sacrifices we go through.” What he is least looking forward to is the anticipation, waiting for team mate to make transitions, then hoping there is no North easterly wind. Getting to the end of the race is important to Dan. “It’s the prize to justify the hours of effort and training that goes in. We know we are good enough to finish well, but sometimes things happen out

of our control and if this happens, we are ok with that. Running up the sand dunes, shaking hands with old mate Gurns and putting that medal on is a pretty cool feeling.” #415 Bridget Bell (2 Day Individual - Female Veteran. Bridget Bell from Kirwee decided it was now or never to complete her first ever Coast to Coast. She has wanted to do it for years after watching her friends and her Dad compete but put it off due to feeling like she didn’t have time to train. Bridget says ‘I am looking forward to the whole atmosphere of the day and just being amongst it with everyone. I’m not really looking forward to the last bike leg, knowing that the body will be hurting and it is such a long straight road. When asked how important it was to complete the event Br i dg et r ep li ed “ Ver y important. You put so much time and effort into training, so not finishing would be heartbreaking. Next week there will be snippets from other wellknown competitors and a list of locals with their bibnumbers.

DARFIELD BASED

Bob was in trouble. He forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife was really angry. She told him "Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in 6 seconds AND IT BETTER BE THERE!" The next morning he got up early and left for work. When his wife woke up, she looked out the window and sure enough there was a box gift-wrapped in the middle of the driveway. Confused, the wife put on her robe and ran out to the driveway, brought the box back in the house. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale.
