COMMUNITY HALLS UNDER COUNCIL SCRUTINY

NEXT ISSUE OF THE MALVERN NEWS IS 19TH JANUARY 2024 DEADLINES: EDITORIAL - 1pm, Monday 15 Jan ADVERTISING - 10am, Tuesday 16 Jan

Councillor Lydia Gliddon is fighting back after an article was released in the Press last week stating some Selwyn community centres and halls could be sold, leased, or demolished. A move was

many questions in the community around facility hire rates. “There was some misconception on what the charges are, and confusion on commercial and community rates. I questioned the utilization data as I believe it is incorrect, I know some facilities listed as low use have had more than stated, but an in-depth study should clarify my concerns. Alternative operating models include lease, management agreements and partnerships.” Lydia believes that social license and public good should be a very important consideration. “For a rural community – it may not be hitting the targets, but the community factor and social license has an immense value to our smaller towns, these are important landmarks for our communities, typically built by our local people. A lot of history is contained in these buildings.” “It is important to remember that no decisions have been made on the future of these halls,” says Lydia, “this is to give staff direction to bring a report to us. I have also asked for our targeted rates to be assessed/included in the report.” Lydia says she will endeavour to keep the community updated on any progress and assist them in working though this.

backed by the Council to “identify potential alternative arrangements or changes to future operating models”. A report was endorsed by council in 2021 identifying all community facilities across Selwyn that classified their role and has pointed to Hororata, Sheffield, Doyleston, Greenpark and Lake Coleridge as being hired out only a few times a year. Others showed low use, bringing in little revenue over the year. The following community buildings under scrutiny include Courtenay Hall, Doyleston Hall, Glenroy Community Hall, Greendale Hall, Greenpark Community Centre, Halkett Community Centre, Killinchy Community Centre, Kimberley Hall, Lake Coleridge Community Hall, Mead Hall, Sheffield Hall and Tawera Hall. Lydia says the Council needs to take a strategic approach to look at what facilities it has, the condition and what investment is needed. “The timing is right as we head into our long-term plan. We also need to make sure that Council facilities give the community what they want and need. We’ve asked staff to look at some of our halls, talk to the community and look at all the options to make sure those facilities are being used in the best way possible to serve the community.” She says she has answered

Lancaster Park Premier Women’s cricket player Yssa Cullen, (16) from Glentunnel, debuted in List A cricket for the Canterbury Magicians earlier this month. Yssa says she was excited to be selected but also was a “little bit nervous”. She was pleased with her day and says, “I really enjoyed it and had a lot of fun.” She put on a great performance against Northern Districts Women in Tauranga, bowling an outstanding 3/38 off eight overs. Northern Districts won the toss and elected to bat first, making best use of the daylight hours and fast outfield Yssa took her first wicket in the sixth over with a catch behind from the wicketkeeper. Her next wicket was another

catch in the 29th over, followed by a leg-beforewicket in the 31st over. At the start of December, playing a T20 game for her Lancaster Park club against North West, Yssa took a maiden five-wicket bag, taking an unreal 5/8 off four overs. A Canterbury Cricket spokesperson commented, “A very bright future ahead for this young cricketer”. Yssa started her cricket career playing for the South Malvern

Miners when she was nine and is currently in her seventh season. Asked what keeps her passion alive for the sport, Yssa says she likes that every time she goes out on the field, it’s a new chance to improve her game. What next? “Hopefully I’ll get selected for the Canterbury Women's Under 19 team, which has a tournament coming up in January,” says Yssa.

Three Darfield High School students Elisha Hill, Kyla Watson and Bridget Moir recently attended a five-day leadership course at Boyle River Education Centre. The girls were the lucky recipients of applications made to the Malvern Youth Trust. The girls left Darfield on December 11 with an early start at 6.20am. They were nervous with anticipation, not knowing what was ahead for them. The course would enable them to develop their leadership skills, show initiative, communicate, be supportive and face their fears. The next morning started at 6.30am with feet on the floor followed by breakfast with selfserve eggs, bacon, cereal, fruit, and toast. After they made their lunches, they spent the day with instructors until 5pm. In the evenings, the girls were part of a group of 12 girls

and three guys. The group did an overnight tramp to Nina Valley Hut, where they carried their tents. The tramp took four and a half hours with a river crossing, steep hills, and rain. Two groups of six prepared their tea (chicken, chickpea curry and rice precooked by staff back at Nina Hutt). Elisha, Kyla, and Bridget took part in several challenges including high climbing ropes made up of rope, tyres, and ladders. Team building activities were an integral part of the girls’ week at Boyle River. Asked about the challenging

activities they were involved in, Bridget says it was the first time she had been rock climbing outside, but she made it to the top of all levels. Kyla enjoyed the Sylvia waterfalls, where they had to do a river crossing and then walk to a canyon up a steep hill to reach the falls before jumping into the waterfall. Elisha says the tramp really pushed her; however, it was a good time to socialise with others and see where they came from—she would recommend the course to friends and other students and apply next year for the scholarship.

Kirsty's Sweethearts would like to say, “a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to making our Sparkle and Shine event for Kirsty on December 1 such a memorable and special occasion”. The generosity from businesses and individuals with donations of auction items and experiences, as well as other private donations, was humbling. The group, formed to raise funds for Kirsty O’Connell, a mum with cancer and two young daughters, says, “Kirsty is so grateful for your support. You have all made a huge difference to her cancer journey. We raised over $6,700 through the auction”. Kirsty's Sweethearts wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas with family and friends, and Kirsty says, "Wear the pretty dresses, make every day count, don't sweat the small stuff, and eat the cake".

PULL OUT HOLIDAY GUIDE XMAS GREETINGS … From the Editor’s Desk As the year comes to a close, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for your ongoing support and commitment to advertising in the Malvern News newspaper. Your partnership is vital in ensuring the success and sustainability of our publication. In an era where digital platforms dominate, your choice to invest in traditional print media demonstrates a shared commitment to the local community and a recognition of the unique value that newspapers like ours bring. Your advertisements not only enhance the quality of the publication but also play a crucial role in keeping our community informed and engaged. I understand the many advertising options available t o d a y, a n d g e n u i n e l y appreciate your decision to prioritize the Malvern News. Your support goes beyond just promoting your business; it contributes to the vibrancy and diversity of our local media landscape. As we look forward to the upcoming year, we hope to continue this collaborative journey with you. Your presence in our pages is invaluable, and we are eager to explore ways to enhance your advertising experience.

May the upcoming year also bring new opportunities, fresh perspectives, and even greater success to us all. I look forward to facing challenges, celebrating victories, and navigating the journey ahead with the community by my side. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my wonderful current staff members. Charlotte Farthing: Charlotte has only been with me for five months and is already well known in the office as the friendly, bubbly person behind the counter or on the other end of the phone. Fi Maddison: Fi started just after Charlotte and works two days a week in the office as well as a few hours from home. Fi is a professional, approachable, and talented writer. Abbi Moore: After school and holidays, we have had the pleasure of Abbi working in our office. Abbi is off to boarding school next year and we will all miss seeing her smiling face each week. However, she will always have holiday work with us for as long as she wants it. I might be biased but she is a very capable, mature young lady, well beyond her thirteen years. Taking over from Abbi during the week will be Cade Stanbury and Charlotte’s

daughters Naomi and Aneka. Once a week we also have Grace Hunt: who comes in to print and pack the papers. This is probably the most tedious job in the office, but Grace turns up and leaves with a big smile on her face each week. Nathan Carter: is my courier driver on a Wednesday and deliverer on a Thursday. He is the most reliable courier I have ever had, always delivering the papers on time. Thank you also to the many people that supply us information for columns, stories, sports results – remember, if it’s newsworthy and you know about – we’d like to know too! Wishing you a joyous holiday season and a New Year filled with happiness, good health, and prosperity. Warm regards, Jan Thomas, Editor

Like all of you with your children, I am proud of mine regardless of them getting awards or not. Some kids have harder circumstances than others but still achieve in their own way. I am aware that people need to strive to win, work hard and be the best they can and that not everyone will be recognised. This speech I have found online is pretty awesome though:

The end of another school year is here, teachers have figured out grades and determine which names will be recognised during the academic awards and who will be awarded the gold medals for achievement. These students are deserving of their honours. Academic heroes are just a small percentage of the student population who achieve amazing things in an average 180-day school year. And there are awards for students like these. Today I give the gold medal to these students: # The boy who works harder than the dux - but who will never get higher than a C # The girl who knows all the answers but is paralyzed by shyness and cannot raise her hand # The boy who just doesn’t fit in, who tries but can’t figure out why the other kids call him a freak # The invisible girl whose day will end without one person speaking to her # The boy who stifles his dream of going to uni because he comes from a working family who has other plans for him # The girl who didn’t finish her homework again - because she worked all week - so she can pay the electric bill or buy groceries so her little brother can eat # The boy who is raised by loving grandparents but who sometimes needs a mom more than a teacher # The boy who discovers the constant fighting between his parents is over…and so is his family…and somehow he believes it’s his fault # The girl who cries herself to sleep because there’s a man in her home she doesn’t know, just like the one she didn’t know last week, or the week before # The girl whose eyes hold dark secrets that cast shadows across her face, whose long sleeves cover the scars of her emotional pain, who struggles to control the anxiety boiling inside her—but sometimes fails These students, like many others are worthy and important. And today…I give them a gold medal.

LAST MINUTE EDIBLE GIFT IDEAS ChocolateChocolate-dipped shortbread When you’re caught short but want to make that little something extra special, you can’t go past shortbread dipped in chocolate. Take one batch of homemade shortbread or one box of bought shortbread biscuits, melt white or dark chocolate and dip each biscuit into the melted chocolate—halfway or on an angle—and set aside to cool. When chocolate is hard and dry, package in cellophane bags or small boxes. Tie with a pretty ribbon and add a gift tag. Viola! Cranberry, brie, and rosemary bites These tasty little bites are perfect for Christmas day or boxing day. They’re quick and easy to make too. You’ll need flaky pastry (pre-rolled if you don’t have time), brie cheese, cranberry sauce or jelly, and fresh sprigs of rosemary. Cut pastry into rounds and press them into a medium-sized muffin tin, add a slice of brie cheese, top with cranberry sauce or jelly and a tiny sprig of rosemary. Bake in hot oven according to pastry instructions. Serve hot or cold. Homemade lemon curd You gift recipient will love a jar of this delicious topping; use it on scones, ice-cream, toast fingers, crumpets, stirred into yoghurt or dribbled over a stack of meringues. You’ll need two eggs and two egg yolks, ¾ cup sugar, 1/3 cup chilled butter, zest, and juice of two lemons and clean, sterilised jars. Whisk together the eggs, yolks, and sugar in a pot until smooth. Add butter, lemon zest and juice and whisk until the mixture has thickened. Pour into clean jars and seal. Decorate with ribbon and gift tags.

XMAS WITH GEORGE By George Elder, takebackyrhealth.com The festive season is rapidly approaching, and we are used to celebrating with lots of delicious food, but how can we keep it fun and healthy? It should be easy and not scream diet food at your visitors. Here is my recipe for success. First, make sure you are using olive oil for dressings. For frying, roasting or cooking use butter, coconut oil or olive oil. Most people won't notice a difference, yet you are serving healthier food. Throw away any vegetable oils. A knob of butter onto hot vegetables before serving adds a nice flavour. BBQ food is great, but again, don’t use any vegetable oils to cook with. Provide plenty of meat, eggs, and fish for guests, these are the most nutritious foods. Cold cuts are great and go with almost anything. Roast meat with plenty of green vegetables is excellent. Substitute kumara or sweet potato for spuds and if you want to serve rice, take a look at the frozen cauliflower rice available in the supermarket, or make your own. Serve plenty of summer salads optionally with an olive oil-based dressing. My favourite is egg salad, with a little curry but when selecting mayonnaise, look for egg based without vegetable oils. For snacks, I suggest fresh nuts and cheese instead of candy, but ensure they are fresh. For dessert, strawberries, blueberries and/or raspberries with fresh cream are delicious. If you serve ice cream, keep the servings small. Dark chocolate 80%+ is the best option. Pavlova is great but find one with low sugar or make your own. Whip cream without sugar or add a tiny amount of sugar substitute, such as monk fruit. Christmas drinks! Avoid juices and sodas as most are full of sugar. Low carb beer is really catching on, a little wine is okay but don’t overdo the quantity. Provide plenty of chilled (filtered) water with ice for everyone and maybe jazz it up with some lemon, cucumber, or other fruit to lift the flavour. Merry Christmas and enjoy the celebrations..

10 TOP ACTIVITIES TO DO IN MALVERN Malvern has much to offer when it comes to recreational activities and with such beautiful scenery, it’s hard to resist getting out and about over the holidays to explore the area. 1. Take a walk on the wild side – The area is full of walking tracks long and short and one of the easiest ways to explore is by foot such as West Melton Forest, The Willows, Raikaia Gorge Walkway, Peak Hill, McHughes Forest Park, Washpen Falls, Rockwood Station Bush Walk, Kowai Bush Walk, Devils Punchbowl, and Kirwee Walk. 2. Head out for a game of golf – Check out these local clubs in stunning rural settings – Hororata at Glentunnel, Terrace Downs at Windwhistle, or Waimakariri Gorge just over the river. 3. Go camping – There are plenty of opportunities to camp out in the area such as Glentunnel Holiday Park, Kowai Pass Campground at Springfield, Whitecliffs Domain, Harper River Campsite at Lake Coleridge, Lake Pearson (Moana Rua) Campsite in the Waimakariri Basin, and Klondyke Corner Campsite. 4. Have an adventure – If you have money to spare, there are several exciting activities to try such as horse trekking, jetboating, hot air ballooning, guided hikes in the mountains, clay shooting and archery, alpine train ride to the West Coast, high country station and animal farm visits. 5. Visit a local town and find the oldest grave – A great activity to keep the kids busy while checking out the heritage in the area and while you’re there stop for a coffee or lunch at the local cafes. 6. Discover our history – Attractions in the area include Homebush Stables, Terrace Station, Cotons’ Cottage and Museum, Glentunnel Museum, and Lake Coleridge Power Station. 7. Visit a garden – Selwyn in general has some beautiful gardens on offer for the public to visit. Gardens in Malvern include The Herbal Garden, Stonycrop, and Casa Rosa gardens in West Melton, Gunyah Country Estate and Terrace Station. Washpen Falls 8. Ride your bike – If love to ride your bike in the hills and mountains or simply enjoy getting out on the roads, you’ll find a few challenging and not so challenging trails. Check out the bike trail at McHughs Forest Park or the Willows at West Melton, both suitable for family rides. For those with more experience, try the Craigieburn and Korowai/Torlesse Tussocklands Park trails. 9. Go swimming – Whether you’re looking for a swim in a local swimming pool or river, think safety first. Rakaia Gorge Walking Track Darfield and Sheffield have pools open to the public but are closed Christmas day, Boxing day, and New Year’s day (Sheffield also closed on Jan 2). If swimming in rivers, check for water quality safety online ‘Can I swim here?’ at

www.lawa.org.nz/explore-data/swimming 10. Dine out – The Malvern area is blessed with several eateries including cafes, restaurants, and wineries in West Melton, Kirwee, Glentunnel, Hororata, Darfield, Sheffield, Springfield, Arthurs Pass and Windwhistle.

SWIM SMART CHECKLIST Stay safe this holiday season if you’re heading out to the rivers and lakes in Canterbury. Land Air Water Aotearoa (LAWA) offer checklist before you go. Water quality • Check the water quality information site. • Know how to spot potentially toxic algae so you can avoid it. • Avoid swimming near potential sources of contamination such as flocks of birds, storm water or waste outlets. Clean and Clear • Avoid swimming for at least 2-3 days after heavy or prolonged rain, even for sites that have good water quality. • Don’t swim if the water is murky or smells unpleasant. It is best to wait until it clears before taking a dip. Environmental Hazards • Check for hazards (rips or strong river currents, underwater objects, steep dropoffs or stinging jelly fist at beaches) • Know your limits and never swim alone. If in doubt, stay out. • Follow the advice of any warnings or alerts. Rivers considered unsuitable or unsafe for swimming in the Malvern area include Selwyn River/Waikirikiri at Glentunnel and Waimakariki River at Thompsons Road (the Willows). Both these sites potentially have toxic algae (cyanobacteria) and other health risks with moderate to high risk of illness for swimmers and dogs. Caution should also be exercised at Selwyn River/ Waikirikiri, Whitecliffs Domain and upstream of Whitecliffs Road bridge—this site is only monitored for toxic algae (cyanobacteria), however there may be other health risks.

TAKE CARE ON OUR ROADS THIS SUMMER ‘Police “anywhere, anytime” on roads this summer - I tēnei raumati kei ngā rori Ngā Pirihimana “ahakoa ki hea, ahakoa āhea”" Police are urging everyone to take extra care when travelling the roads this holiday season. In our efforts to encourage good driver behaviour, Police will be maintaining a highly visible presence on major highways throughout the country this summer. “Expect to see Police patrols anytime, anywhere,” Director of National Road Policing Centre, Superintendent Steve Greally says. “Our staff will be out on roads, often in locations you least expect us to be. So please take your time and drive to the conditions.” The same things are killing people on our roads, Superintendent Greally says. “Speed, alcohol, drugs, distraction and unrestrained drivers and passengers are still the main causes of death and serious injury. If you are caught this summer to be breaching any of the

behaviours above, you should not expect a warning.” Police can’t control the actions of every driver 24/7. We can’t be beside you in the car telling you to slow down, or to put your seatbelt on. Road safety is something we all have to take a greater responsibility for. With an expected increase in activity on our roads over the holiday period, our focus remains on these four main behaviours: RESTRAINTS: Herenga Restraints save lives – it’s that simple. In 2022, two of every five fatalities on our roads were not wearing a seatbelt. Anyone who chooses not to wear a seatbelt significantly increases their risk of injury or death if they end up in a crash. IMPAIRMENT: Pīroiroi P roiroi Socialising is fun but drinking and driving should not be mixed. If you’re going to drive, avoid alcohol. Police will have a particular focus on drink and driving this

summer. The same can be said for anyone who attempts to drive while impaired by drugs. DISTRACTIONS: Wareatanga Drive distraction free. Put the phone away or pull over. SPEED: Tere Be aware of the posted speed limits on your travels. The speed limit is just that – a limit – not a target. Even a small change in speed makes a big difference to injury severity in a crash – for you and everyone else involved. As part of our efforts to ensure everyone’s safety on New Zealand roads this summer, we will be taking enforcement action where necessary – there are no exceptions. Ultimately, drivers have the responsibility to keep their passengers, other road users, and themselves safe this holiday period. We want to ensure everyone can have a memorable summer for all the right reasons.

CHRISTMAS MESSAGES from…. ...Selwyn Catholic Parish All of us should be able to look forward to Christmas as a time of being with family and friends over a meal and to share presents especially with our young people. At the same time, we need to realize that Christmas can be difficult for those who have lost a loved one during the past year or perhaps struggling financially. It is important that we reach out and support these people, so they know they are not forgotten and are loved. One of the things that I love

about Christmas is seeing so many families come to church to celebrate the birth of Jesus who is our Lord and Saviour. It is wonderful to see the children who take part in the nativity play, which reminds us of the first Christmas when Jesus was born in Bethlehem in a humble stable. During the year I had the opportunity to spend some time in Israel and to visit the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, which marks the place where Jesus was born. While in Israel, I met

both Jews and Palestinians, who I got to listen to and enjoy their hospitality. It is so sad to see the fighting that is now taking place in Israel. As we celebrate Christmas this year, may we remember Jesus’ birth place and pray for the Jewish and Palestinian people that there may be peace.

Wishing you a Blessed Christmas. Fr Chris Orr

...Malvern Co-operating Parish If I had one word to describe 2023 for me, what do you think it would be? Give up? Encounters! Some encounters were expected, unexpected, challenging, funny, inspirational, peaceful and I could go on and on. One humbling and special form of encounter has been to journey together with families whose much loved ones have died. Pray for them please, as they face their first Christmas without their loved ones.

Another special encounter was learning another language— NZ Sign Language. My focus was learning liturgy. The meaningful actions reflecting the heart of God's constant Love and Grace. In two weeks, we will experience a celebration of reen ac tin g a mir acu lou s encounter with a special Baby, born to bring Hope, Peace, Love, and Salvation for us all. I have found prepping for Christmas this year heart-

breaking with our world in turmoil with wars, innocent lives ending. Our constant prayer is that the powers that be encounter God's Love so that there is World Peace. Enough is enough. Let the cries of the innocent be heard. We must continue to pray with Hope … God Bless.

Meri Kirihimete Aunty Lyn

...Malvern Anglican Parish Nau Mai, Haere Mai. While decorating my house for Christmas I found a small quilt with these words on it, which reminded me of the reality of Christmas. Christ is born Honour him Rejoice Inn no room Star shown Three wisemen Manger bed Angels sing Shepherds watch May your Christmas be full of fun, laughter, and love. But

“YOUR LOCAL VETS IN ROLLESTON”

remember once the presents have been opened, the Christmas tree taken down, the last piece of Christmas ham eaten, the Christ child still remains with us. EmmanualChrist with us. The gift of Jesus is a gift to us. A gift of peace and hope in our spirit, but also a call to follow. A call to make this

world a better place with love and possibilities. And the power of the Holy Spirit helps us to make it possible. We can stay on the hillside in the dark… or we can go to Bethlehem this Christmas time.

Meri Kirihimete, Blessings. Rev. Alexa Evenden.

END OF YEAR PERFORMANCE Last Saturday Malvern Ballet School had their annual end of year show. This year’s show was the weird and wacky world of Alice in Wonderland, where 52 dancers brought this beautiful story to life at The Piano theatre in Christchurch city. The show was choreographed by Saba Pieters and Lisalotte Polderman-Charles. The artistic director of the ballet school, Saba Pieters says, "The dancers performed beautifully, especially as we had a mere six weeks to prepare, and I am so proud of their hard work and

dedication". She'd also like to extend a huge thank you to the teachers Lisalotte, Florentina Polderman-Charles, Caitlin Smith and all the helpers and parents who have been so supporting and encouraging. Saba says the year has been a big one with exams, competitions and productions as well as retrofitting a new studio. “We are beyond delighted that we will be moving into our new studio in Darfield for Term 1 in 2024 and wish everyone a magical Christmas break and a special new year!”

YOUNG DRIVER GAINS INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE West Melton sulky driver Anna Mangels (16) had a proud moment earlier this month when she represented New Zealand wearing the silver fern at the Inter Dominion Mini Trot Championship (ID23) held at Albion Park R a c e w a y, Q u e e n s l a n d , Australia. Anna was one of two youths selected to represent New Zealand and drove ‘Notjustaprettyface’ on the night. The championship involved driving miniatures, Shetlands, and ponies on the final night of the Inter Dominions at Albion Park. Mini trots cater for children aged between 5 and 17. Anna and Olivia Thomas of Southland took on drivers from the Sunshine State’s mini-trotting clubs (the Queensland Junior Harness Racing Association and the Queensland Mini Trotting Sporting Association) as well as other qualifiers from South Australia, Victoria, and New South Wales. While Anna didn’t place, she

(50) at 900 yards. Andre, Sam R, Jess and Ran also shot great scores. Shaun was welcomed to the range and enjoyed his first time shooting TR on the range. A very respectable 47 2 for his first shoot. The Malvern Rifle Club would like to wish everyone a very Happy and Safe Christmas and a successful and prosperous 2024. Next week: December 23 Club Training Day 300 yards December 30 Club Training Day 900 yards (Pre-Nationals) Setup from 12.30pm Visitors are welcome to the range, contact details can be found on the Malvern Rifle Club Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ MalvernRifleClub

MALVERN RIFLE CLUB December 16 was the fourth round of the 2023/24 Club Championship at the ‘longs’ – 800 and 900 yards. Again, we were joined by some Ashburton & District Rifle Club members who wanted practice at the longer ranges ahead of next month’s NRANZ National Championships at Trentham. The weather was better than the previous weekend, warmer with a gentler wind. While the wind was weaker, it was often still hard to read and judge. Changes in the wind strength sometimes happened before the mirage or wind flags showed any evidence of the changes. Some very good scores were shot. Daniel and Sam K – in TR – both shot 50s at 800 yards with Mike and Murray shooting 60s in F-Open at 800 yards. Allan showed his skill at 900 shooting the only maximum

says she had an amazing experience and was thankful for the opportunity. Anna, a passionate sulky driver, was awarded Canterbury Kids Karts Best Drive and Pony Combination for the 2022/2023 season earlier this year. She has been involved in Kidz Kartz for around three seasons. Next year Anna is planning to apply for HRNZ Cadet Scheme and hoping to gain employment at a stable. She says that next year while still at school, she will be studying the NZ Certificate in Animal Care as well as NCEA credits in Equine.

Congratulations to Lucy Jenkins, a rugby Black Fern from Kirwee/West Melton who earlier this year was referred to as a ‘tackling machine’. Lucy has been named the Sky Super Rugby Aupiki Player of the Year. From Lucy’s All Blacks profile page (allblacks.com), ”In her second seasonof Sky Super Rugby for Matutu, the powerful loose forward was a stan d-out acr oss the competition. Known for her work ethic and commitment for the, Jenkins has a bright future ahead of her”. Photo: New Zealand Rugby
