DREAMS COME TRUE

The Glentunnel School (Mātai Rangatira) and Community Bike Track was destroyed in a storm in September 2021, and now, just two years later, it has been reopened. The community banded together to rebuild their bike track and reimagined it! “After the Friday, September 10, 2021 storm of 160kph winds, 16 eucalyptus trees weaved throughout the claybased bike track were uprooted, causing irreparable damage. THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS IS HERE Local fire brigades were out in force over the weekend visiting communities collecting canned and dry goods to donate to the Darfield Food & Clothing Bank (DFCB). DFCB co-ordinator Rose Craven says she is overwhelmed by the generosity of local communities that have donated so far. She says donations in Darfield have exceeded past food drives and donations from the smaller towns have been outstanding too. “This year, the provision is greater, but the need is greater,” says Rose. At the end of November, the Food Bank barely had a few cans available to offer. Rose and her volunteers have been busy packing food parcels ready for gifting before Christmas to those already on her register. She says there are around 60 families in need this year. There are a few collections happening again this weekend and food for parcels can still be dropped of at the Malvern News office or at the Food Bank, call Rose on 027 532 4888.

Through the generosity of local communities over 60 local families will get to enjoy Christmas this year.

CHRISTMAS PARTY A RESOUNDING SUCCESS Last weekend, Darfield Life Church’s 'Christmas in the Park' was transformed into 'Christmas in the Hall' due to unexpected rain, but the switch didn't dampen the festivities. It turned out to be an absolute triumph! The morning service was a heartwarming celebration of Christmas, unitin g the community in joy. The day unfolded with delightful food, exciting games, and an opportunity for people to forge new connections within the community. A staggering 200 attendees gathered for a delightful lunch, marking a day of togetherness and shared joy. As the rain made way for the afternoon, the quintessential kiwi games stole the show— sack races, egg and spoon race, and tug of war—eliciting peals of laughter and creating cherished memories. The Church extends heartfelt gratitude to the sponsors and contributors: Frews Transport, Alysha Stuart for facepainting, The Fat Cow for ice creams, Around-a-bounce for the bouncy castles, FourSquare for their beverage support, Malvern News for their promotional assistance, and Pip Deans along with DHS Sports Co-Ordinator for their invaluable contributions. Darfield Life Church invites everyone to join their upcoming Sunday services, promising a fortnight of family -led services and community bonding opportunities.

GREAT FINISH TO THE YEAR A community Christmas barbecue organised by The Locals–Sheffield/Waddington Residents Group is all go this Saturday 16 from 5.30pm to 8.30pm at the Sheffield Hall grounds to celebrate the festive season and the community. Bring your meat to cook and either a side dish, salad, or dessert to share, also a nonperishable food item for the Darfield Food & Clothing Bank. The barbecues, plates and cutlery are all supplied. Bring a picnic blanket or camp chair to sit on. Spokesperson Brian Donnelly says it’s been a busy year for the group. Since being elected to represent the

community, the Locals has been helped by township residents in undertaking several community initiative’s including the ongoing native planting programme along Waddington Road, a pot luck dinner, a mental health fund raiser, which saw members of the New Zealand Army Band provide entertainment for the occasion, and the early stages of creating the Sheffield Domain bike track. Several community events are planned for next year including a family picnic at the Sheffield Pool in January, an indoor movie night in February, a repair shop cafe in March, a family treasure hunt in April, and pink ribbon high

tea in May. “A special mention has to go to all those residents who work in the background to ensure events are successful,” says Brian. “Thanks also go to Lydia Gliddon and Sharn Nu’u for their continued support.”

“I love Christmas for the tradition and carols, scorched almonds, and the start of a summer break. Our amazing district has such a diverse mosaic of cultures, traditions and stories that enrich our neighbourhoods. No matter what your background, Christmas is something for all of us. Whether it’s a simple public holiday to spend time with your friends and whanau or to connect in a church and the meaning of Christmas. I hope over the next month you get some time to slow things down and spend quality time with people you love and reflect on the year gone and the year that will be. Waikirikiri Selwyn

has so much to offer in the summer, Liz, Elliott, and I will be taking some time to enjoy the warmer weather and find or revisit some favourite spots

for a dip in one of our rivers. We wish you and your family and friends a very safe, restful, and merry Christmas.”

Sam with his daughter Elliott and wife, Liz.

...From Selwyn MP. Nicola Grigg “Season’s greetings – I hope this message finds everyone across Selwyn safe and well. As 2023 ends, I’d like to celebrate all that has been achieved across Selwyn, including a 3.5 per cent increase in GDP – pointing towards an exciting future. However, I acknowledge that it has been a tough year for many, attributed to the cost-of -living crisis, increased mortgage repayment, inflation, and job insecurity which is why the new coalition government is progressing our 100-day

plan with urgency. In addition to being re-elected as your MP, I have been assigned the position as Minister for Women, Minister of State for Trade and Associate Agriculture which are equally great privileges that I take very seriously and am excited about. I look forward to catching up with as many of you as possible over the holiday break and wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season.”

XMAS MESSAGE FROM RURAL TENANCY LTD As we take a moment to reflect on the last few years I think we can all agree it’s been a period of change for us, our owners and our tenants alike, and we can only be grateful to have had everyone’s support as we’ve traversed unexpected curveballs thrown at the property management industry including, but not limited to, the global pandemic, which forced us to re-evaluate our strategies, implement safety measures, and adapt swiftly to an ever-changing landscape, and political changes and restraints. We are proud to say that despite the hurdles, our team stood strong, ensuring the seamless management of properties under our care. The economic uncertainties, renter challenges, and the evolving needs of property owners pushed us to innovate and find new ways to provide value and has seen us team up with several companies providing valuable expertise to complement our comprehensive services in areas such as Healthy Homes compliance and Smoke Alarm compliance. Through it all, our commitment to excellence remained unwavering and we are thrilled we now have homes that are warmer and drier for our tenants while at the same time protecting our owners’ investments in the long term. As we step into the New Year, a new government brings new change with it that again we’ll learn to navigate. Quite what

these changes will mean for everyone is still uncertain, but we are confident that it will address the evolving needs of property owners, tenants, and the community at large. The National administration has expressed a commitment to reintroduce Interest Deductibility, reduce the Brightline test period and introduce Pet Bonds to name a few policies and we are eager to see how these initiatives will shape the real estate landscape and impact our clients. Rest assured; we are closely monitoring developments to ensure we are well-prepared to navigate any changes on the horizon. Whatever happens we are ready to face the future with optimism, resilience, and a dedication to exceeding our clients' expectations. We would like to take this moment to send out a big Thank You to all of you in Darfield and the wider Selwyn area who support Rural Tenancy. We really do appreciate you supporting our small but rapidly growing business. Our office will be closing at 12pm on Friday, December 22 and will be reopening on Monday, January 15 at 9am, while we all have a welldeserved break with our families. We will be monitoring emails, and the office phone will be on, so if you have any enquiries over that time please feel free to get in touch.

DANCERS SHINE ON STAGE On November 26, TM Dance World gathered at St. M a r g a r e t' s C o l l e g e in Christchurch in their gorgeous Charles Luney Auditorium for their highly anticipated Annual End of Year recital, 'Dance Life 2023.' The day commenced early with on stage rehearsals all morning for the whole school, which lead into the show at 3pm. 'Dance Life' showcased the talent of our dancers aged from two to 18 years, dancing together to make a magical show for our dance families and friends. Diverse genres of dance were showcased in group performances in jazz, acro, lyrical, hip hop, contemporary, musical theatre, and ballet. This year our show had an outstanding audience of 480, who joined us in celebrating the achievements of our dedicated and passionate students at TM Dance World. Each dancer shined on stage, embodying the culmination of hard work, dedication, and a profound love for the art of dance. The camaraderie among friends on stage was truly heartwarming this year and we extend our gratitude to everyone who supported us in the lead-up to and during the show this year. To continue the celebrations for our students, on Saturday

2nd December we held our TM Dance World end of year prizegiving at the gorgeous Rosewood Stables in Sheffield. During this afternoon our dance families and friends gathered to celebrate our students’ dedication to dance with our annual TM Dance World Awards and presentation of our dance and acro examination results from earlier in the year. This year we were beyond proud of our students to have received 34 distinctions (over 97%) and 92 honours (over 85%) through both the Asia Pacific Dance Association and Acrobatic Arts. This shows the hard work and dedication of our incredible students, and we are so proud. Special mentions to the following outstanding results: Georgina Prosser: 100/100 in her Level 8 APDA contemporary exam. Millie McDrury: 99/100 in her Level 3 APDA Musical Theatre exam. Caitlin Smith: 98/100 in her Level 8 Contemporary exam. Ava Halley: 150/150 for her Primary Acrobatic exam. Enduring Powers of Attorney are designed to respect the donor’s autonomy and intent. An attorney has a legal obligation to act in the best interests of the donor, to use their property to promote and protect the best interests of the donor. They must also consult with the donor as far as practicable before making decisions. But unfortunately, sometimes these duties are not honoured, and the power given to an attorney is abused. To try and minimise the risk of an attorney abusing an Enduring Power of Attorney there is a very strict, nonnegotiable requirement that the donor be of sound mind to

the time of instructing and signing their Enduring Powers of Attorney. Ensuring the donor has sufficient mental capacity is one step towards protecting against abuse, by helping to ensure that the donor is making decisions voluntarily and without pressure. If the donor doesn’t have sufficient mental capacity, a Solicitor cannot complete their certifications and the documents would not be legally binding. If you have concerns regarding the way an Enduring Power of Attorney was executed or is being used, and don’t feel that the attorney is responding appropriately to your concerns, you can make an application to the Family Court for review of an attorney’s decision(s) and actions, and/or for exercise of the court’s jurisdiction in respect of an Enduring Power of Attorney, for example if there is a concern about the attorney’s ability to carry out their duties.

the court to examine their actions and decisions to ensure they were properly fulfilling their obligations to the donor. An application can be made while the Enduring Power of Attorney is active or after it has been revoked or the donor has died. CHRISTMAS MESSAGES…. ...From Darfield Police Darfield Police would like to take this opportunity to pass on our thanks to all the volunteers in our community and outlying townships for their great work throughout the year. We would like to acknowledge the work that the Malvern Community Patrol, Fire Service, St John Ambulance Service, and sports coaches perform in our community. The work that our community volunteers perform each year is of outstanding benefit to all

members of our community. We hope you and your families can have a break away over the Christmas and New Year. Please take personal responsibility for your home and farm security. As a volunteer brigade they are also affected by things beyond their control, but our communities are well supported by ambulance services based away from our traditional Darfield station. At times there are delays in response for services, but every effort is made to help every call in a timely fashion. St John is not just about an ambulance service. We are supporting teams on the sport field, event services at large gatherings, Caring Callers, Therapy Pets, Youth, public education, and Friends of the Hospit al to name some services supporting communities. ...From St John Darfield Season's Greetings. As December 2023 races towards a finish line, it is good to look back on a year that was getting back towards normal. We have seen the back of Covid as it was. Going forward it will be treated similarly to influenza and other seasonal illnesses. The reality is that for some it will continue to have big impacts on their health, and so we need to be mindful of those in the community with reduced immune response, elderly or compromised in some other way, and how we protect them. Covid will continue to have cycles of increased infection, as it is constantly changing to remain a viable disease. Things are tougher out there than they were at the start of 2023, and for some, our resilience has been reduced and our vulnerability increased. As good friends and neighbours, in generally small communities, we are better at looking out for each

CHRISTMAS HOURS:

together. Roads will be busy this summer with traffic passing through the local roads and townships. But complacency of locals also contributes to the increased stresses of driving. The ongoing messages around speed, seatbelts, alcohol, and drugs, as well as fatigue are only repeated because they are still common causes for accidents, suffering and near misses. On behalf of St John locally, have a great festive season, refresh yourselves and support those around you. Ross Meder, St John Darfield

KITTENS MATTER TOO If you think it’s busy getting ready for Christmas, have a thought for the animal welfare and rescue centres around the country. One such animal rescue group in Selwyn is Kitty Cottage Rescue based in Southbridge, a volunteer group who gives wild and unwanted kittens a second chance at life. The group has previously assisted with kitten rescues in the Hororata area. The reality of not getting cats desexed, male or female, comes to fruition between Spring and Autumn. Hundreds of unwanted kittens are born throughout New Zealand every year. One cat can produce an average of three litters a year, so over a period of seven years up to 4,948 kittens can be born from one un-desexed female cat and her offspring. At this time of the year the

SPCA and rescue groups are overwhelmed by what is known as the ‘kitten season’. What can you do to help? Firstly, get your cat desexed, secondly if you do end up with a litter of kittens – get them desexed before they go to new homes. Thirdly, you can help rescue centres such as

the SPCA or Kitty Cottage Rescue by donating money or items they need including cat food, litter and litter trays, paper towels, ice cream trays, kitten flea treatments, polar fleece blankets and much more. For a full list of items needed, visit the Kitty Cottage Rescue Facebook page.

Animal centres need your help at this busy time of the year.

WATCH THOSE LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES Source: Fire and Emergency New Zealand Christmas shopping is well underway and Fire and Emergency New Zealand is reminding people to be cautious around lithium-ion batteries. "These batteries are used in a lot of the presents people buy each other for Christmas, including toys, tools, devices and phones," says Fire and Emergenc y’s Community Education Manager, Adrian Nacey. "Lithium-ion batteries provide a large amount of power in a small package and are safe if used correctly. But, like any product, can sometimes fail and overheat, catch fire, or explode," he says. "It’s important to take care when using these batteries as

they are a fire risk when not stored, charged, used or disposed of correctly. Make sure you charge them on a hard, flat surface not under a pillow, on a bed or couch they can overheat and cause a fire." If you notice anything unusual with your battery, stop using it straight away. "This could be anything like a strange smell or a change in colour, too much heat, a change in shape, swelling, leaking, or odd noises," says Adrian Nacey. People also need to be careful when disposing of lithium-ion batteries. Do not put them in the rubbish - contact your local council to find out where they can be recycled. As always, make sure to have workin g smoke alar ms installed and have a threestep escape plan that you have practiced with a first escape route, second escape route and safe meeting place.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand ask people to be cautious around lithium-ion batteries this Christmas.

TRAPPING WORKSHOP BENEFICIAL

Tree pruning and removals Difficult trees Hedge trimming Advice and tree assessments Fully qualified and Insured

By Lydia Gliddon to various types of trapping importance of networking and Darfield recently hosted an enlightening workshop on predator trapping, aimed at bolstering local efforts for biodiversity restoration. Led by experts Tim Sjoberg from Pest Free Banks Peninsula and Marie Grey from Predator Free Port Hills, the event drew an enthusiastic crowd eager to earn effective trapping methods. The workshop commenced with an overview on the work undertaken on the Peninsula, the challenges involved, and touched on the bigger part to play in a Selwyn initiative. Participants were introduced

techniques, from traditional victor traps and flipping Timmy’s to more advanced methods like the A24 selfresetting traps. Tim led a fun handson demonstration outside allowing attendees to gain practical experience in setting up traps, understanding baiting strategies, and implementing effective placement tactics. The collaboration with our current groups brought valuable insight, shared experiences, and showcased successful strategies. Our partnerships emphasize the

knowledge sharing among our common goals. Luke Simpson launched Predator free Darfield – to find your closest group, visit trap.nz. Participants left the workshop equipped with resources and newfound knowledge. Thank you to all the groups and individuals making a difference in our area, and Densie Ford for your help hosting.

HIMALAYAN LILES MAKE AN IMPRESSIVE SHOW Though the day was decidedly chilly on Sunday, the visitors were not disappointed with what they found at Terrace Station. The weather is always the limiting factor for the number of visitors we get, but real gardeners do not mind a bit of drizzle, and some stayed for at least two hours. One visitor came just to see the Sally Holmes roses and was amazed by the twometre-high bushes and the number of blooms. Some Cardiocrinums (Himalayan lilies) had been knocked about by the wind on Saturday, but most were still impressive. There was no chocolate cake

left by the end of the day and many plants had also been swept away to new homes. Children enjoyed having an activity sheet to keep them

As we approach the Christmas season and summer gets into full swing, it’s a good time to remind everyone about the Government’s Road to Zero strategy. Deaths on our rural Canterbury roads have decreased over the last 12 months, but we aren’t at zero yet. We all have a part to play in keeping the roads safe for our families, so when you are travelling our beautiful country this summer, remember that even momentary distraction caused by cell phones or driving a few kilometres per hour too fast can have disastrous consequences. Getting to your destination five minutes faster is not worth the risk. Police also see a rise in burglaries over the summer, mostly due to windows being left open during hot nights or people being on holiday. Some extra precautions you can take before leaving home if you are having a well-earned break are: • Allow extra time to make sure you double check the security of your windows and doors before you hit the road. Padlocks on gates are a simple, affordable, yet very effective way of keeping your property secure also. • Make sure all your security lights are working, and your cameras have working batteries. If you don’t have security cameras now might be the time to consider getting some. • If you know your neighbours let them know you are away so they can keep an eye on your home. • Get someone to pop round and clear your mail and check on your home while you are away, or even consider getting someone to house-sit for you. We’d like to wish you a very happy Christmas break and remind you to only call 111 in the case of an emergency. It’s important to keep 111 free for emergencies.

WILLOWS HELP WITH FLOOD PROTECTION Across South Canterbury rivers, close to 50,000 willows have been planted in one of Environment Canterbury’s (ECAN) biggest seasons of pole planting ever undertaken, thanks to operational funding/ rates, partner contributions, and central government funding. Poles are young tree stems, older and more robust than seedlings. When mature, these willow trees will play an important role in flood protection, helping strengthen the region’s rivers and in c r eas in g s afet y an d resilience for river communities in the face of climate change. Willows (Salix spp.) were first introduced to New Zealand during the mid-1800s when early settlers discovered they could strengthen riverbanks that had been stripped of their native vegetation. Fast growing, even in the most challenging conditions, their

dense root structures form a fibrous mat that protects bare soil from erosion and stabilises the riverbank, river works supervisor Ben Macleod says. "Willows act as a buffer, slowing water flow and protecting the river edge from the full brunt of the current. They remain one of the most reliable options for stabilising banks in erosion-prone areas or where flooding poses a significant threat." The modern varieties used are sterile cultivars that have ground-stabilising benefits, without the risk of habitat loss due to invasive spread.

In the wrong place, however, willows can be a

flood risk, taking up space in the active channel of a river. So, while we are planting willows in some places, in other places we are removing pest species like crack willow, which can spread rapidly where it’s not wanted. While a normal pole planting season might see 10-15,000 poles planted, this year’s 50,000 has well and truly surpassed that. "This is the biggest year we’ve had in the 12 years I’ve been at the regional council," Ben said. “It’s been an amazing team effort from start to finish." Source: www.ecan.govt.nz

LOCAL CRICKET MATCH OFFERS VALUED EXPERIENCE Darfield Cricket Club recently played host to the New Zealand Police Women’s Cricket team, who played against a Canterbury Development Team. The New Zealand Police (NZP) team is still in its infancy, with this being only the third time the squad has assembled. The team has several former domestic provincial players alongside a couple of former White Ferns, including skipper Er in Ber min gh am. Th e Canterbury Development team is mostly made up of under 19 women. Monday was lost to the weather; however, Tuesday saw the Development Team post an impressive 320 off their 40 overs with NZP bowlers Kelly Habraken taking three for 55 and the alwaysreliable Megan Tuapawa with two for 28. Skipper Erin Bermingham then asked Habraken to open the batting and was met with a solid “I have never opened in my life”. In cold and windy conditions, the NZP lost two early wickets, before Habraken

and Olivia Gregory put on a 120-run partnership before Gregory departed for an excellent 47. Habraken went on to blast 16 boundaries and three sixes, to score an impressive run-a-ball 107, becoming the very first NZP Women’s cricketer to score a century. Her heroics were not quite enough with the team finishing on 245 runs. The final day saw two T20 matches being played, with the NZP again chasing a big score of 240. Olivia Gregory again being aggressive with 49 runs and some hard-hitting at the end by Erin Bermingham with 44 not out, leaving the NZP 85 runs short. In the final game, the NZP batted first, and a shuffle of the batting order did not work, limping through to 106 all out. Some very tight bowling from Kadion Mcdonald and Alana Cameron, and excellent fielding from the NZP, put the Canterbury team under pressure, losing regular wickets before reaching the target with one wicket to spare.

Although the results didn’t go the way of the NZP, it was another successful week for the team as they continue to grow. Canterbury coach, former White Fern captain Amy Sattherthwaite thanked the NZP team and commented on how much her young team got out of the tournament, in terms of playing against more experienced women, and as part of their selection process before heading into their national under 19 tournament next month.

New Zealand Police captain Erin Bermingham and Canterbury Development Team captain Izzy Sharp respectively headed their teams in an action-packed tournament hosted by Darfield Cricket Club.

MALVERN RIFLE CLUB NEWS December 9 was a training day for longer distances of 800 and 900 yards. There were some Ashburton District Rifle Club members visiting who wanted practice at the longer ranges ahead of next month’s NRANZ National Championships at Trentham. It was a fine but overcast day with a strong, but variable, wind blowing from the shooter's left to their right. The changes in wind strength could be quick and sharp,

catching shooters off guard particularly at 900 yards. The temperature dropped as the afternoon progressed, but the forecast rain didn't arrive during the shooting. Most shooters shot good waterlines at 900 yards, holding a good elevation but many were blown to the left and the right as the wind strength increased and decreased without much indication. Martin and John showed their

skill at both ranges. Bruce, Peter and Mike also had good scores at 800 yards, and Rob at 900 yards. Visitors are welcome to the range, contact details can be found on the Malvern Rifle Club Facebook page www.facebook.com/ MalvernRifleClub Next week: December 16, Club Champs No. 4, Longs 800 and 900 yards.
