There are plenty of works of art to be seen and enjoyed at this year’s Darfield Artweek 2023 with 381 artworks on display. This year’s artwork was judged by Diane Swain of Christchurch and the exhibition officially opened last Friday by Selwyn District Mayor Sam Broughton to a gathering of artists, sponsors, and invited guests alongside the voluntary Artweek committee. This year’s Malvern Community Arts Council Premier Award was awarded to Daniel Summers of View Hill for his beautifully carved and conceived sculpture, ‘Flight’. Daniel’s inspiration for his ‘angel’s wing’ is his love of birds and capturing movement in rock. A sculpture artist of 30 years, whose family was recovering from the flu, Daniel says, “I was overwhelmed, absolutely stoked. It couldn’t have come at a better time.” He used serpentine, a material similar to greenstone, for his award winning sculpture. The serpentine came from the Kelly Range behind Jackson’s Hotel and was originally mined by two German brothers. The youth section, now in its

The section is split into two age groups with awards presented to Libby Henderson and Taylor Wyatt in the 10-14 age group, and Nami Kelly and Maiah Henderson in the 15-18 age group. The display of works has undergone a welcome transformation this year - a fresh white background, with thanks going to David

Malvern Community Arts Council administrator Katrina Ellis says, “We encourage you to vote for People’s Choice, the top 10 will be invited to exhibit at Te Huanui in 2024 for the ‘Ultimate People’s Choice’”. AMAZING EXPERIENCE Joanne Smith is still buzzing after taking part as a finalist in this year’s 2023 World of Wearable Art Show (WOW). This was the first time Joanne’s entry was selected and her creation ‘Guirlande de Ballons’ meaning balloon garland was a dedication to her late father who had balloons for every occasion - even Christmas. The universal language of balloons being a ‘celebration’ is a tribute to her father. Joanne says, “It was an honour and a privilege to be selected as a Finalist for World of Wearable Art, an Iconic New Zealand show celebrating its 36th year. It was an exciting journey to Wellington to take part in WOW’s opening night, designers’ day, and awards night with her family, who went along to support Joanne. There were many highlights such as “waking up and seeing a clip on Breakfast TV One on Saturday September 23, showing my bizarre bra on the catwalk”. Joanne wants the success of her hobby to inspire other people. “We all create something whether it be with our family, cooking a nice meal, a sport, an interest, in our work, or who we are as a person. And if you have never been to this show, pop it on your list, it’s New Zealand's largest theatrical spectacle.” For Joanne, this year’s acceptance into the prestigious event could be just the beginning.

HORORATA SPRING FAIR - GOOD OL’ FASHION FAMILY FUN The Hororata Parish Fair will be one of the biggest free annual markets in Selwyn this Spring! With over 60 market stalls offering a huge variety of crafts, toys, clothes, candles, soaps, art, flowers, birdbaths, and everything in between! Not to mention the Parish's own stalls such as the white elephant, plants, and produce. The Country Auction will be at 11:30am and there will be some great bargains. Thanks to funding from the Selwyn District Council, there will be free activities like archery and pedalmania, plus the traditional kids’ races. Pony rides and bouncy castles will be there too! Creative Kids is a fun competition for children to enter their creations. This year's theme is 'Pillars of our Community'! Draw your favourite place in the community or build it out of Lego, let your imagination go wild. This year, all proceeds from the Fair will go towards the Parish’s Pastoral Care programme. The Parish has recently employed the Reverend Peg Riley, who is continuing the good work of our former vicar Jenni Carter. Peg is well qualified to carry out this role with decades of experience serving the community as a vicar and hospital and school chaplain. Peg is solely employed to provide pastoral care to the community - she will not be involved in other Church activities or services. Entry to the Fair is FREE! Make sure the Hororata Parish Spring Fair is on your calendar.

HYDRO SLIDE AT DARFIELD POOL Be ready to make a splash at the newly redeveloped Darfield Pool next month. Come summer, Darfield Pool will be the first swimming pool in Selwyn to be fitted with a three-metre hydro slide. Other additions to keep kids of all ages entertained include a water play area, water bomb platform and toddler splash pool. After receiving feedback from pool visitors and Darfield School, Selwyn District Council began carrying out upgrades to the pool in two stages. The first stage of the $2.4 million redevelopment has now been completed. To give the pool a new, attractive look and feel, upgrades included repainting, new changing rooms, fresh signage, replacement of the fence on Greendale Road and vibrant artwork and landscaping. Council Head of Sport and Recreation, James Richmond says some additional funding

was found to really freshen up the look of the pool, which had not been redeveloped like this for about 20 years. “We really want to make the most of the pool and make sure people have a great experience there. It’s going to be a fun, vibrant space.” The hydro slide, play area and splash pool are currently being worked on in stage two by Armitage Williams and are expected to be finished in time for a reopening to the public on Saturday, November 18. Council Aquatics Operations Manager Nick McConaghty says one of the key drivers for redeveloping the pool was

providing consistent heating for those colder days in summer. This is included in the final upgrade, as well as levelling out the main pool, new filtration, and bleacher seating with improved shade, providing a fantastic visitor experience for years to come. Nick says this was a great opportunity for Darfield to make sure the pool continues to be a place the community is proud of. “We are looking forward to the open day and seeing how much our community enjoys the new upgrades during the warmer months.”

The exciting new concept for Darfield’s upgraded pool and new three-metre hydro slide, a first for Selwyn.

NEW LOOK FOR DARFIELD CAFE After several years of owning The Fat Beagle Cafe and Dalethorpe House Store, Rachel Ferguson is relishing stamping her mark by combining both businesses into the one label of Dalethorpe House. The rebranding, joining her business in Darfield’s beautiful original wooden building with the family’s farm location Dalethorpe, is a transition that Rachel has been aiming for, and she is excited that it is now all happening. There’ll be the healthy counter food and fresh in-house baking with a range of salads, quiches, cakes, and slices including gluten and dairy free options that locals love. Along with this, there is now a further emphasis on what is seasonally available and locally sourced. This will include, wherever possible, produce from the Dalethorpe family farm. There will be a return to some good old basics too, like mince on toast. The business is now licensed, with a selected wine and beer menu. It is still a lovely casual cafe atmosphere, but you will be impressed with what is now created in our kitchen. Talk to Rachel about Dalethorpe

House as an ideal venue for your private functions. Upstairs, bearing the same stamp of quality and sustainability, is a wonderful selection of gifts and clothing. Rachel prides herself in choosing brands and pieces you’ll love and can mix and match season after season. Books, baby clothes and gifts, kitchen utensils - beautiful, curated items to uplift your home - Dalethorpe House is your one-stop shop for yourself and your Christmas

gifts. So don’t leave the cafe without popping upstairs, you’ll be amazed at the range of products... and it comes with the benefit of shopping locally, which helps us all. To celebrate the fresh approach of Dalethorpe House, Rachel and the cafe team are inviting the community to a celebratory gathering on Thursday, October 19 at 7pm. Pop in to view the changes, test the drinks menu and enjoy a complimentary grazing platter.

NEW DECK FOR WAIMAKARIRI GORGE BRIDGE Delays have irked locals from both sides of the Waimakariri Gorge as shortterm, temporary repairs on the bridge ensure it can stay open while a longer-term option is being explored jointly by Selwyn and Waimakariri District Councils. The Selwyn District Council states that a new surface will be installed on the Waimakariri Gorge Bridge as a long-term upgrade to the bridge. The Waimakariri Gorge Bridge is jointly owned by the Waimakariri and Selwyn District Councils. Selwyn District Council is responsible for the day-to-day inspections and maintenance of the bridge, and Waka Kotahi also contributes funding to maintain and repair the bridge. Recently short-term maintenance has been carried out including repairing potholes on the bridge deck surface, installing metal plates where the timber deck is wearing and tightening the hold down bolts. These are short term repairs to make sure the bridge remains open to all

vehicles. An assessment of the bridge has been taken to get a better understanding of the level of work required to repair the structure. The good news is that the main structure of the bridge is sound. However, a new replacement deck is required. The intention is to replace the bridge deck in the first half of 2024. The Councils are working together to confirm the design requirements for the new deck and to secure funding required from Waka Kotahi. Both Councils have planned for these repair costs in this financial year’s budgets. The next steps are to design and

cost the replacement deck, which should be completed in November; the work will then go out to tender for construction. It’s anticipated that a contractor will be appointed in early 2024 and the deck replacement work will be carried out around midFebruary to April next year. In the interim, their will be additional signs, road markings and speed humps in place to help reduce speeds over the bridge. We will also continue to complete temporary repairs as and when required. Please check the Council’s websites and Facebook pages for more information.

A new deck is planned for the Waimak Gorge Bridge in 2024.

PRINCIPALS VISIT CHINA Exploring the legacy of Rewi Alley, who was born in Springfield and whose 60 years in China made him a revered citizen as he established schools and cooperatives for the rural poor, took a group of local principals on an adventure of discovery. For two weeks, five Malvern primary school principals, along with Darfield High School’s principal and international director travelled in China to learn more about Chinese culture and establish ‘sister school’ relationships. They were joined by five principals of high schools and area schools from Christchurch and Dunedin. In Gansu province, in northwest China, the delegation visited schools in Shandan and Lanzhou, including the Shandan Bailie Vocational College, which has had a sister school relationship with Darfield High School for nearly 26 years. At Shandan Bailie, Darfield High School principal Andy England presented principal Peng with a traditional Maori weapon called a tewhatewha. It signifies the joining of our two peoples with one face of the weapon being ours and the other theirs - it connects earth and sky so that though we be far apart we are joined together - a sentiment worthy of Rewi Alley.

The Malvern primary schools are working towards relationships with primary schools in Shandan, some of which have student populations of 3000. The group visited Qingquan School where Darfield Primary School principal Meredith Devonald was able to connect with students and teachers, who had especially come into school on Saturday to meet the group. Principals of Sheffield, Greendale, Windwhistle, and Springfield all meet their partner schools at a function at Shandan Number 1 Middle School. The delegation laid wreaths at Rewi Alley and George Hoggs Mausoleum in Shandan and saw several impressive museums devoted to Rewi Alley. In the newly renovated library Springfield Principal, Keri Steele, found a booklet about the opening of the Rewi Alley Memorial Park almost 26 years ago. The delegation came to understand the huge input Rewi Alley made in China and that he is still a revered person. For delegation leader, Allison Rosanowski, it was gratifying to observe the way the delegation was welcomed wherever they travelled. School visits were memorable as the group observed students in craft, paper cutting, library, reading, calligraphy, group problem solving and reporting, science experiments plus sport.

BLACK-TIE TO HELP A FRIEND Incorrect treatment for breast cancer has meant Selwyn midwife and solo mum Kirsty O'Connell has now been diagnosed with terminal cancer and given just months to live. Her close friend Bridget Carter says, “Kirsty had breast cancer two years ago, and was treated at the time with the wrong chemotherapy. After removal of the tumour and radiation, we thought she had beaten it, being told that she was in remission.” However, Kirsty found a lump in mid-August this year and, after a biopsy, found that the cancer had not only returned, but had also spread to her lungs, sternum, spine, brain, neck, lymph nodes, and to the original breast tumour site again.

Bridget says Kirsty, who originally comes from the West Coast and resides in Rolleston, is well known in the Selwyn district having performed many home births in the area. To help Kirsty and her family, Bridget and a few others have got together to organise a Black-Tie event to raise funds to go towards treatment that will hopefully give Kirsty additional precious time and memories with her daughters aged 9 and 11 years. “Kirsty has fit a lot into her life thus far, but at 42 years of age, she really should have much more living to do. She has brought many precious lives into this world, it’s just so unfair that she might lose her own,” Bridget says. “She is the most giving and loving person. An amazing mother,

daughter, sister, friend, and member of her community in Rolleston and beyond. She has a huge village supporting her and her family at this terrible time, but unfortunately, treatments come with a very big price tag.” An “impressive” raffle and auction are also being planned, with one donation already pledged. “We’ve had a generous donation from a resort in Fiji for a seven-night package for six adults and we’re also getting flights donated too.” Bridget is seeking help from the local community and businesses to donate items, vouchers, or services suitable to be raffled or auctioned. She says, “If the unthinkable happens and we lose our beautiful friend, all money raised will go towards her girls’ future”. Details of the Black-Tie event set for December 1 will be announced soon as well as information on how you can purchase raffle tickets.

DARFIELD GUN CLUB This year’s Waimak 100 was held on the first of the month and mother nature sent us a gusty nor-wester to contend with. There was not a lot of red on the scoreboard, especially once the cloud added to the difficulty. Forty-eight shooters in total and just three possibles in the first 25. The middle 50 only produced two possibles in A grade by Heath Smith and Ben Rosewarne and a four-way shoot-off for third while B and C grades were sorted off the gun. Heath emerged the winner with Ben second and Phil Lilley outshot the others to take third. On to the last of the day and another four possibles. Another shoot-off required with four shooters on

97/100. Ben Rosewarne took HOA and the Waimak Trophy closely followed by ‘Mr Smooth’ Dave Folley. B grade was won by Shane Dwyer with 95/100, and A J Seymour rounded out the winners with 88 in the C grade. To finish the day, the Twin Rivers Trophy with the Rakaia and Waimak 100’s combined, A J was clearly the C grade winner with a score of 175/200, Aaron Clifford backed up his 96 from Mead TePirita, with a 94 to end up with 190 for the two events. The trophy required a shoot-off between Mike Sime and Peter Smrekar with Mike emerging the winner. This year brings an end to the generous sponsorship of

Opening Day 2023/24 Season October 7, 2023

It was a damp drizzly day for the opening day of the 2023/24 Malvern Rifle Club season. Cool and wet with the drizzle increasing during the afternoon. A small group of shooters had arrived for opening day with the course of fire scheduled to be 10 counting shots at 300, 500 & 600 yards. Given the conditions it was agreed to start at 300 yards and then decide whether to move to 500 yards or stay at 300 yards. Some shooters didn’t want some or all of their scores recorded as they were testing, others decided not to shoot instead helping the run the club day. Some only shot once. After the first 300 yard shoot the decision was made to stay at 300 yards for a second round of shooting as conditions weren’t improving. Andre, Allan and Chris started their season strongly with

possibles score on their first round of shooting with Andre and Allan also shooting possibles in the second round. A fine start to the season. Next week: 10 counting shots at 800 & 900 yards. NEW MAP FOR ROADSIDE STALLS An exciting new initiative has just been launched and is about hit Selwyn by storm. Passmebuy is the brainchild of Weedons local Alex McGrath and the website has just gone live. The idea of Passmebuy came about when Alex thought it would be handy if there was one source that offered information and locations of roadside stalls, mobile shops, coffee vans, etc., that was easy to access. “Running a horse poo stall myself over the years, and while it’s always been steady, I have friends who sell so much more because they’re on busier roads,” Alex says. She asked herself how she could make her stall as ‘visible’ as the ones on busy roads? Her answer was to create a map. Alex says, “Being able to shop for local produce and goods is great for the health of our communities, the health of our bank balance and that of the person we buy from, and the planet by supporting shorter

Alex McGrath created Passmebuy to encourage people to buy from roadside stalls. supply chains.” However, busy lives can often throw up barriers to committing to shopping locally. And that’s where Passmebuy comes in. “If we had information at our fingertips about where local goods and produce are available, it would be easier to shop from them more often!” Plans are in place for an app to make it even easier to locate local goods and

produce. In the meantime, Alex is focussing on building up the numbers of locations on the map and has offered people with roadside stalls to list their stall free of charge until November 20 (thereafter it will be $2 a week). “It is absolutely critical to its success for buyers and sellers, that the map is busy and bustling.” For more information, visit: www.passmebuy.co.nz/en.

GIVE GOLF A GO The She Loves Golf season has just teed off at 6pm on Tues evenings at the Hororata Golf Course. The weekly sessions encourage women and girls to have a go at playing golf, meet new people and receive group lessons to improve their swing and ability to hit the ball. Organiser Steph Kimber says, “No pressure and no judgement is how we roll at She Loves Golf. The social connection is more important than your ability, or lack thereof, to hit the ball.” There are three coaches who will teach the basics and give lots of encouragement. It

doesn’t matter how good or average you are, the important parts of She Loves Golf, Steph says, are social connections, having fun, exercise, being outdoors in a stunning environment and the excuse to get together with other likeminded and like-ability players. She also says it doesn’t matter if you can’t come weekly, or can’t even start until 2024, She Loves Golf runs throughout the summer months of day light saving. And if you don’t have clubs, that’s not an issue either as they can be supplied. “We also encourage players to come to the course and have a

hit at any time during the week”. She Loves Golf costs just $5 per session, payable on the night, and each session is followed with refreshments and snacks back at the clubrooms after the lessons. Just turn up at 6pm on Tuesdays at Hororata Golf Course to give golf a go! For more information, phone Steph on 027 418 2150.

National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) says, “There’s around a 100% chance of El Niño continuing during October-December and over a 95% chance that it will persist through summer. The pressure pattern, delivering more westerly winds, will likely lead to some prolonged dry spells to the north and east of both islands.” Farmers can now be kept in the loop when it comes to predicting dryness and drought with a new tool developed by NIWA and the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). Using the latest in artificial intelligence and long-range weather modelling, the free tool provides week-to-week predictions of rainfall, dryness, and potential drought

35 days into the future. The outlook updates daily, capturing the latest changes in the climate system. It also offers long-term forecasts at a much higher spatial resolution than previously available. The launch of the tool comes after official confirmation that the El Niño weather pattern has developed in the Pacific. El Niño events typically come with an increased risk for abnormally dry conditions across many regions of New Zealand, particularly in the north and east. NIWA meteorologist Ben Noll says the new tool is already making a big difference. "This tool enables us to give more frequent and districtlevel predictions of rainfall, dryness, and drought. Providing advanced warning of future dry spells will be invaluable.”

He says a lot of work has gone into making sure that the data is available in a way that works for those who need the tool. "With climate change, the leading cause of increase in drought risk is the temperature-driven increase in atmospheric water demand. This leads to drier soil conditions, water stress for vegetation, and low hydrological flows. Having this new tool on our belt will hopefully help the country be more prepared for and resilient to potential droughts, both now and in the future," Ben says. STAY VIGILANT THIS SUMMER Fire and Emergency New Zealand is urging people to exercise caution and remain vigilant when they’re burning off paddocks and vegetation. Acting Service Delivery Wildfire Manager Rachael Thorp says it’s important to remember that burying embers under dirt may not extinguish the fire, especially in high winds as they can disturb the soil, pick the embers up and carry them in the wind to other ignition sources. “People should also exercise caution when lighting any bonfires or rubbish fires. Check the weather and don’t burn if the conditions are windy or hot.” She says people should not allow an open fire season to make them complacent.

SUCCESS ON THE WEST COAST Springfield’s local dance school, Danz Fit, attended the West Coast’s dance competition in the September school holidays. The event attracted students from around the South Island. Seven Danz Fit students took part in the event ranging in age from 8 to 14 and performing routines taught by Danz Fit principal director Leisa Yaxley and dance instructor, Natasha Boon. Leisa says, “The girls have been rehearsing and practicing really hard this year and it was fantastic to see them all dance so well. I couldn't have been prouder of them and the support they showed to each other over the four days of competition. The girls dance different genres including jazz, contemporary, lyrical, and musical theatre”. The next competition for the girls will be dancing in the prestigious dance competition held on the Gold Coast. Students had to qualify to compete in the national level competition and Leisa says the girls are all really excited to be attending. “This competition attracts dancers from all over Australia and New Zealand and will be an incredible and positive experience for the girls,” Leisa says. “We have some awesome fundraising events coming up including an auction evening on October 28, where we will auction small and big items as well as a massive meat raffle with entertainment from Sammie Dawson.” “There will also be a Sip and Paint afternoon in Springfield with Vicki Peacock with details in next week’s Malvern News. All funds raised will go towards the girls’ travel and accommodation costs.”

NATIONWIDE ACADEMY SELECTION

Emy Wilson, a Pony Club Academy recipient, is raising funds to attend a hui being held in Hamilton later this year. Emy Wilson (15), a local Darfield High School student, was recently selected for a nationwide initiative to be part of the inaugural New Zealand Pony Club Association Academy, is excited to take part in the six-month course. The application process was stringent, and detailed. Emy was delighted to have been interviewed and selected as one of 75 applicants chosen from throughout New Zealand, especially as she was one of only two riders from Canterbury. The Pony Club Academy is designed for members who wish to become leaders in their own sport, to open opportunities within the equine industries, locally and globally, and to gain momentum on the athlete performance pathway. The Academy is a blended learning, part time course studying from home, with the help of a mentor, and involves online study, webinars, and face to face hui. Emy is a member of View Hill Pony Club and says she is

grateful for the support and guidance she receives from her club, allowing her to gain enough experience to be accepted onto this programme. She looks forward to sharing all she learns with other pony club riders and encouraging them to apply to the Academy in the future. The hui is being held in Hamilton in December and Emy needs to self-fund her travel and accommodation costs. Emy and the other successful applicant from Canterbury, Evie Eaton, are holding a quiz night at The Rock, in Rolleston on October 30. Teams of 4-6 members are welcome to attend, the cost is $60 per table. To secure a spot please either message or text April Fitzjohn on 027 241 4917 and she will give you the banking details for payment. Emy says “she is grateful for this opportunity and the support she has received so far, especially from her horses who have taught her the most.”

SHEFFIELD GARDEN CLUB Sheffield Garden Club started its series of spring/summer garden visits in September with a visit to Fairleigh Farm Flowers near Waddington where roses, carnations, alstroemeria and gypsophila are the main flowers grown and sold direct to the public. The group then moved on to nearby Fairview Farm, where the original garden is being revived by owners Gayle Souter-Brown and Chris Brown with new garden structures and

plantings. A lavender field is currently in the planning and Gayle talked about her lasagnestyle of bulb layer planting. The October outing saw the group visit another member’s garden at Toby Hill Farm at Kowai Bush. This garden, belonging to Heather and Trevor Taege, has a spectacular view high above the Waimakariri riverbed. The visit finished with a native bush walk and afternoon tea down by the river at

the farm’s tourist centre. A second outing later this month, a bus trip, will see the intrepid gardeners heading to Ashburton to visit Trotts Garden and Coniston Gardens. Sheffield Garden Club meets on the first Tuesday of the month with regular outing over the summer months - to find out more, phone 021 047 0066 or email sheffieldgardenclubnz@gmail.com.

By the end of November all the spring and summer crops should be planted, and some winter producing crops as well. Sow undercover for planting out after frosts have passed: Cucumbers, zucchini/courgettes, pumpkins, melons, tomatoes, eggplants, capsicums, basil, kumara, and flowers. Plant out into the garden bed all spring seedlings: Brassicas, beetroot, salad, chard, onions, leeks, spinach, parsley, celery, flowers. Direct sow into the garden beds: Carrots, peas, beetroot, onions, lettuce, radish, broad beans, potatoes, rocket, bok choy, spinach, coriander, and green beans (once frosts have passed). Plan this season’s seed saving: Saving seed from strong, healthy plants will give you free food next season and for many years to come. • Mark and stake the plants. Let them bolt to flower and leave them until their seed pods dry or their fruit fully ripen. • Easy crops to save seed from are lettuce, coriander, spinach, bok choy, rocket, radish, carrot, chard, spinach, parsnip, onions, leeks, tomatoes, beans, peas, broad beans, pumpkins, cucumber, capsicum. Plan and plant for next winter: Brussels sprouts and leeks can take up to six months to mature. Sow them under cover now and plant them out before Christmas so you can start harvesting them as winter hits.

I was having trouble with my computer. So I called Harold the computer guy, to come over. Harold clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem. He gave me a bill for a minimum service call. As he was walking away, I called after him, "So, what was wrong?" He replied, "It was an ID ten T error." I didn't want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired, "An, ID ten T error? What's that ... in case I need to fix it again?" The computer guy grinned.... "Haven't you ever heard of an ID ten T error before?" "No," I replied. "Write it down," he said, "and I think you'll figure it out." So I wrote out ........ I D 1 0 T I used to like Harold...
