ISSUE 1,106 Friday 6th October 2023
Cold weather put a damper on the Wings & Wheels event with strong winds buffeting this year’sannualevent.
However, organiser Nev Croy says that while show car and plane numbers were down from the last year’s event, “we still had a fair number of people come along. After all bills are paid, we should come out on the right side of the ledger”.
Nev says the event could not happen without the continued support of Peter Morrison and Liz Nattrass and the use of their workingfarm.
“We estimate we had approximately 130 display cars, tractors, and trucks. We don’t know the exact number of spectators but considering the day, a fair number came alongandsupportedus.”
The McLeans Island Model Areo Club put on a fantastic
display flying a model jet and acrobatic planes. The Christchurch Airport crash fire tender created plenty of interest as did the display of World War two memorabilia anda1970sScorpion tank. Nev is especially grateful to the people who worked on the gate in the cold wind and to those, including stallholders, who kept everyone entertained and well fed and helped make the day asuccess.

During his 51 years in the Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade, Nev Croy has seen many changes and attended manyfires duringthattime. Nev recently stood down as Chief Fire Officer for the Brigade but plans to stay on for a while as a support person in a non-operational role. He’s still happy to wash “his babies”, as he fondly refers to them - the smoke chaser ute and car - and keep in touch with the crew. His friends originally encouraged Nev to join and in the early days the Brigade had around six firemen and a 1946 flat deck Ford V8 truck that had been converted into a fire engine byafewlocals. His roles during his time with the Brigade include 40 years being in positions of responsibility as the crew numbers grew steadily to the current team of 23 volunteer firemen.
“It’s changed a lot over time, firemen are now qualified. The equipment is better, but the responsibility is greater,” Nev says. “My role was looking after everyone’s health and safety, making sure the
brigade was running efficiently and had everything it needed, and making sure the firemen’s familieswere okaytoo.”
One of the biggest fire’s Nev attended was the Oxford fire, which extended 16 km along the Waimakariri River from Burnt Hill and threatened Eyrewell Forest. The fire burnt 30-40 hectares of land. The biggest structure fire he oversaw was the Sheffield Hotel, which caught fire in September 2021.
Aside from his fire service to the community, Nev is proud to have been involved in numerous fundraising activities such as the Mud Plug and Wings and Wheels events, where not only does the local brigade benefit but also other localbrigadesandStJohns. “We’ve done so many things with the money raised and it’s humbling to have the support of the community, who get behind our events by attending or donating towards equipment and vehicles such as the smoke chaser ute,” Nev says.
Nev is grateful for the support of his partner, Heather Taege, and his daughters, Michelle
and Amy, over the years.
“They have been my mainstay behind the scenes and my daughters have coped with the disruption their whole lives.”
“I want to personallythank the community and our volunteer firemen. We have a good stable, qualifiedbunch!”

Mental health and well-being are big topics, and ones that are gaining greater awareness and recognition. Daily challenges are heightening stress levels. People feeling anxious, depressed, and harming themselves or others through words or actions, is
unfortunately becoming more commonplace.
Lisa says, “We lash out at those we love. Taking the shame out of expressing our feelings is often the first step to regaining our stability. Before it becomes critical, allow yourself to receive support and unpack your strains and pains. There is always a way forward, and light can shine both in and at the endofthe tunnel”.

This is Artweek’s 42nd exhibition and is open to the public from 10am to 4pm every day from Saturday, October 7 through to Sunday, 15 October.
Malvern Community Arts
Council arts administrator
Katrina Ellis says, “Darfield Artweek is proudly presented bythe Malvern Community Arts Council and is an event to be enjoyed by the whole community. Families are welcome andentryisfree.”
“We are proud to provide exhibition space and an award pool for young artists. This year we have two categoriesage 10-14 years and age 15-18 years,” Katrina says.
“The continued support of
local businesses and volunteers as well as the talented artists make this annual Artweek exhibition possible. New artists, sponsors and volunteers ensure the exhibition can continue togrow.”
Katrina also suggests people take the time to visit Botanica ‘23, the Botanical Art Society of New Zealand’s annual exhibition, at Te Huanui, 17 South Terrace, Darfield.
Mark your calendars for an unforgettable day at the SWELL Seniors’ Lifestyle Expo on Monday 16 October at the Lincoln EventCentre.
SWELL is a place for Selwyn’s older residents to come together. It celebrates the wellbeing and inclusion of Selwyn’s older residents, who can listen to insightful guest speakers, participate in fun activities, and enjoy a variety of food vendors and local marketstalls.
One of last year’s stall holders, Selwyn Central Community Care (SCCC), is looking forward to attending the expo again. Volunteer Coordinator Yvonne Lamond says the event was an excellent chance to tell people about their services and discover some of the many differentgroupsin Selwyn.
“It was a fantastic way to learn what the needs in the community are and to see the breadth of what other groups and organisations are providing so we can give people options of who they can contact if they need,” she says. “There’s so much available in Selwyn and a lot of resources that people don’t know how to access, so the expo is a great way to meet people and help reduce isolation.”
Along with information about resources and support, stall
holders also offer great options to continue to participate in activities and groups. One of this year’s stallholders is Lisa Paget, who runs a programme in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Christchurch Women's Hospital for babies/ pēpi, called Cuddle Hearts. It works by having the mother and baby wear a fabric heart and swap them over at the end of the day, so they have each other’s scent. This can help reduce anxiety and increase bonding.
“Some of our older folks would know someone or would have had family go through NICU and understand how tough that journey is,” says Lisa. “We’ve had a lot of grandparents wanting to help by making Cuddle Hearts, the stitching is easy to follow and
it’s something positive to do. The feedback that we get from parents is overwhelming.”
“People can pick up a pack with fabric, a pattern, and instructions from any of the libraries in Selwyn, and we plan to have some made up for the SWELL Expo. I’m really looking forward to participating.”
A two-week series of fun activities called The SWELL Series is also happening from 17–26 October 2023. From high tea and fitness classes to walks and bingo - there is somethingfor everyone.
For more information about SWELL Expo and the SWELL Series, visit selwyn.govt.nz/ swell or pick up a copy of the latest ‘What’s on in Selwyn’ brochure from your local Library/Service Centre or CouncilCommunityCentre.

100 years of Malvern Tennis will be celebrated on Saturday, October 21 with a fun doubles tennis tournament open to all past and present Malvern playersatthe Kirwee Domain. The day is more than that, says Malvern Tennis president Jack Prouting. “It is a chance for those who have been part of Malvern clubs to get together. While we have a tournament on the day, we’re also bringing together displays on the history of Malvern Tennis.”
“It’s a chance for past and present players to catch up.”
Jack admits there has been a fair bit of reminiscing when looking through the older photos, remembering the people, the wins – and those thatgot away.
Malvern Tennis currently comprises seven clubs based at Courtenay, Darfield, Hororata, Kirwee, Sheffield, Weedons and West Melton. Over time amalgamation has happened, as in most sports, with closures of clubs in
Coalgate, Greendale, Kimberley, Springfield, and ViewHill. However, Jack says tennis is still strong in Malvern. “Our traditional Saturday tennis competitions are less popular, with everyone getting busier. But we have seen a large increase in junior tennis, and our Thursday night ‘Twilight Tennis’ summer competition has had huge growth in the lastfive years.”
The 100-year tournamentand displays are open toanyone interestedon Saturday, October 21 atthe Kirwee Domain. The daystartsat 10.30am, the tennis tournamentruns11am2.30pm, andat3pmthere will be formalitiesin recognition ofthe milestone.

EditorialsuppliedbyPeyton, LoriandMica(Year6ākonga). Best friends Lori, Mica and Peyton came up with a project that gives back to the
community. They decided on a community book exchange for the Malvern MatihikoChallenge that would benefit all learners. The three friends decided it would be a good idea to help the community by making a book exchange for people who want to read, exchange, or add greatbooks.
The ‘Swap-a-Book’ fridge is located at the front gate of Glentunnel Primary School –Mātai Rangatira. Here's the backstory about it. Lori, Peyton, and Mica found the old fridge on the side of the road and decided to use it for their Matihiko challenge. They started by washing the moldy fridge until it was clean, and they took all the shelves out and cleaned those as well.
Then they painted the fridge bright colours. With a little bit of help from the school caretaker they added the hook. Some people from the school donated a variety of books. The freezer door is bolted shut so it can’t be opened.
The Matihiko Challenge is a Malvern Kāhui Ako initiative designed to celebrate the creative and innovative mahi happening in our learning spaces across Kākāpotahi. The challenge sees ākonga throughout Malvern use their design thinking skills to address needs in their communities, with entries from the early childhood, primary, andsecondarysectors.
