When it comes to New Zealand -made movies it’s all about location, location - and what better location than Waddington, right in the heart of the Malvern district. A new movie based on the popular The Bitches’ Box, a

series of fast-paced, multicharacter comedy shows starring comedians Amelia Dunbar and Emma Newborn, has just finished a two-week filming stint on location at Derek Bull’s farm in Waddington.

Over the last two weeks within the daggy confines of the Bull family’s historic wool shed, the two comedians acting in their Jack Russell personas, a cast of cuddly ‘sheeples’, energetic film crew and a couple of yet to be announced

characters/actors have all been working hard on the first section of the film.

Producer Rob Malloch says the production company was given the full run of the farm sheds, which sit beside State Highway 73. “It was the best blank canvas and its location was perfect for the creative vision of the film”

The next block of filming will see the production move to Amelia’s home, High Peak Station in Windwhistle, and then on to Ashburton, where somewhere along the way the two ‘dogs’ will experience a visit to the vets. Rob says it will take around six weeks all up tocomplete the filming.

The company, ‘Beaut Neut’, named in line with the story about the two Jack Russells being neutered, has partnered with Rialto Distribution and expects the film to be in cinemas mid2024.

TRASH OR TREASURE

The Malvern Anglican Parish is holding its Annual White Elephant sale in the Trinity Hall starting on Saturday, October 7 through to Tuesday, October 10. Always a popular affair, the sale is traditionally well-supported with both donations of goods as well as plenty of buyers over the four days.

Spokesperson Helena Waters says, “This year we are back in our premises now the hall is

available, and we look forward to seeing you all and finding some treasure. We welcome donations of all sorts of bric-a -brac. We love small items of furniture and lots of those things you once loved but now no longer need or want.” This year the White Elephant sale is not accepting beds, large furniture items or any white ware.

“We have a good number of stall holders displaying all sorts of items and there will be plenty of hot food and drink available from the Malvern Lions, Darfield Young Farmers and The Coffee Man. This year will see a great selection of model planes.

The New Zealand Fire service will have its kitchen fire display and the Darfield Fire Brigade will be offering rides on their vintage fire engine.

“To organise his working farm so we can hold our show is amazing and appreciated,” Neville says. “This event is an

important fund raiser for our Brigade with other organisations and businesses also benefiting from it.” This year there are three major sponsors - Kats Tyres Rolleston donating a set of four tyres, Alpine Jet Thrills donating a Waimakariri River jet boat ride, and Alan & Janet

NEW VIBE IN COALGATE

The Coalgate Tavern is under new ownership. Harpreet Singh (Harry) and his wife Leiana are looking forward to becoming part of the community and getting to know everyone.

Harry came to New Zealand from a small town called Paonta Sahib in North India 13 years ago and has been working in the hospitality industryever since.

“I have owned a few hospitality businesses since my time here and for the past eight years I have been the owner/operator of the Southbridge Hotel,” Harrysays.

Leiana grew up in Roxburgh and Alexandra and is a country girl at heart. She spent most of her working career in the telecommunications sector and had a large input in the nationwide fibre roll out. She now spends her days raising the couple’s three daughters and managing the business behind the scenes.

Harry says, “We’ve been wanting to expand our business for a while now, so when we came across the Coalgate Tavern, we just got a really great vibe”.

Their plan for the business is to make it a hub for all the locals, whether it’s to catch up with mates for a drink or to bring the family for dinner, a venue for meetings or celebrations.

“We will continue the bingo and quiz nights and add some other fun activities like band

nights. The menu is getting a revamp and in the coming months we will be changing our opening hours for the restaurant to Tues - Sunday.”

Harry and Leiana’s goal is to make sure when patrons leave their establishment they can’t wait to return.

NATIONAL EXHIBITION

Te Huanui is excited to bring another national exhibition to Darfield this year, with “Botanica ‘23”. Members of The Botanical Art Society of New Zealand from Auckland through to Westport and many towns in between are exhibiting a range of original pieces in watercolours, drypoint etchings and limited edition giclee prints.

The Botanical Arts Society of New Zealand was founded in 2004, originally based in Christchurch, where members met weekly, enjoying their painting together. Today, the society has members in all corners of New Zealand who are documenting all types of flora - native and exotic, large, and small, the well-loved, as well as those generally overlooked.

What’s the difference between botanical art and illustration and floral painting? Botanical art is a representation which is scientifically complete and botanically correct but not necessarily complete as a scientific recording and most often produced in colour.

Botanical illustration focuses on scientific recording and botanical accuracy to identify a plant, depicting all relevant aspects of the plant, including the life cycle, frequently including dissections. Most botanical illustrations are monochrome for cost effective reproduction. Floral painting focuses on the creation of a pleasing painting and less on the botanical accuracy or features of the plant.

EDUCARE

Opening Hours 7:30am - 5pm

Through exhibitions like “Botanica ‘23” the society seeks to encourage an appreciation for contemporary New Zealand botanical art, support members to develop their skills, stimulate interest in plants, conservation and our natural environment and encourage participation by all abilities and ages.

MALVERN COMMUNITY BOARD BY-ELECTIONS

Two opportunities to support the Malvern community will be available this year with by-elections for two seats on the Malvern Community Board.

The Council has announced byelections for two seats on the Malvern Community Board following the resignations of board member Sean Ellis from the Tawera Subdivision and Board Chair Ken Mayfrom the Hawkins Subdivision. Nominations are open until 12 noon on Thursday 19 October and anyone wanting to stand for election to the board is encouraged to get their nomination in early, Mayor Sam Broughton says.

“We are encouraging people who want to make a difference in their community to stand. Malvern is a unique part of our district, it’s beautiful with varied townships, farmland, and alpine areas. Local democracy is vitally important for ensuring Malvern people have a voice in shaping the future. The Malvern Community Board offers an opportunity for passionate leaders from Malvern to do this. It’s important we have elected members of a range of backgrounds, skills, and experience – and now’s the time

for anyone considering standing to take that step.”

Former Board chair John Morten says being on the community board is a chance to make a difference for your area.

“The Community Board is a place where you can speak up for your townships, to raise their issues and to bring positive changes, from grants and funding helping young talent or community groups to thrive, to hearing and helping to sort the real day to day issues in our communities in Malvern.”

Anyone over the age of 18 can stand for election if they are a New Zealand citizen and on the electoral roll. Nomination forms must be signed by two people who are enrolled as electors in the ward or subdivision that the person is nominated for.

Nomination forms, and a downloadable copy of the candidate handbook, are available on the Selwyn District Council website at selwyn.govt.nz/elections or from Council offices and service centres. The web page will also provide a list of candidate nominations, which will be updated daily as nominations are confirmed.

CELEBRATING 150 YEARS

Any organisation that provides a continuous service for 150 years deserves acelebration. The Halkett Presbyterian Church meets this criterion. Over the years it has provided for baptisms, weddings, funerals and still holds a traditional Sundayservice. The Church is holding a celebration on Sunday, October 15, 2023, exactly 150 years after the very first service was held on October 15, 1873. The celebration starts with a service at 11am with current and past ministers taking part and the sermon delivered by Hamish Galloway, moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa NZ, who is well-known locally and nationally. Popular well-known hymns will be sung to music from the parish’s new organ/ piano/keyboard. The service will follow with a finger-food lunch and

refreshments held in a marquee on the Church grounds, giving those present time to catch-up and share memories.

A history of the Halkett Presbyterian Church was written for the 125th anniversary in 1998 and will be updated to include details of the Church’s activities and its stalwarts during the last 25 years. It will contain highlights of the 150th Sesquicentennial and be printed after the event - orders for copies will be taken at the celebration. Anyone, and indeed everyone, who has any connection with the Halkett Presbyterian Church or who just wants to join in the celebration of this lifetime of service in a historic building is welcome.

Donations will be gratefully acknowledged.

The Halkett Church was built in 1873. Alexander Calder and

Gilbert Henderson took a leading part in its building, and its cost was £150. Descendants of these families are still actively involved with the Church and the original building is still the one used today.

The Halkett Presbyterian Church is one of the very few Presbyterian Churches in New Zealand that has its own associated graveyard. The graveyard is still active and recently a new row of grave and ashes plots was established to accommodate future requirements.

The uniqueness and history of the Halkett Church and its War Memorial erected in 1920 in memory of two men of the Halkett district, who were killed in action in World War, means they are recognised by their inclusion in Selwyn District Council’s list of Heritage sites (No H207).

The Halkett Presbyterian Church has, over the years, had close association with Kirwee, Darfield and West Melton churches and hopes that these connections are evident at its 150th celebration.

NICOLA

GRIGG

There is now less than a week to go until early voting opens and the choice is clear for Selwyn residents heading to the polls. We can choose either a chaotic coalition of Labour, Greens and the Māori Party or a strong stable National-led government. The case for a National-led government is simple. Labour has mismanaged and vandalised the economy on a scale unlike anything we have seen in recent history – and New Zealanders are suffering for it.

Government spending is up 80 per cent - $1 billion a week more than 2017. The current account deficit is the largest in the OECD. The International Monetary Fund forecasts show that next year our economic growth will be among the lowest in the entire world, and we will be in recession by the end of the year.

We here in Selwyn are not immune to the cost-ofliving crisis gripping the country. Rents here are up, on average, by $140 per week, house prices are up 46 percent since 2017, and the revised dairy payout is going to knock $200 million of the local economy.

Sadly, more and more of our people are needing help. The number of those receiving a benefit in Selwyn has increased by 119 percent, and the number of our youth on job seeker benefits has gone up 43 percent. Even more worrying, crime is on the rise in our once-safe towns. Call-outs to Selwyn police have increased a whopping 79 percent since 2017.

For many people, things feel so bleak that they are looking at opportunities overseas and voting with their feet, with almost 40,000 Kiwis permanently

– OPINION PIECE

leaving the countrylast year.

The Labour Party is working on overdrive to try to convince everyone that our economy isn’t a mess, but when inflation is still high and interest rates are continuing to go up, Kiwis feel the reality. They feel it when they are calculating their mortgage repayments, trying to make the gap between their wages and rising interest rates add up.

They feel it when they anxiously watch their grocery items being scanned through the checkout. They feel it when the petrol light pops up on the dashboard of their car and they wonder how long they can make what’s left in the tank last before having to fill up.

New Zealanders are bearing the brunt of Labour’s economic mismanagement. Middle-income Kiwis are turning up to budgeting services and food banks for the first time in their lives because they just can’t get ahead. If you don’t believe me, just ask the Salvation Armyin Rolleston.

I am determined to do everything I can to change the government and change the sad trajectory our countryis currentlyon.

National will provide tax relief to working New Zealanders, with an average-income family with young children receiving $250 a fortnight under our plan. That’s meaningful relief that will help them navigate the cost-of-living crisis Labour has created Labour’s recklessness with the books and the lack of an economic plan has got New Zealand into this mess, and only National will be able to get us out of it. We will rebuild the economy and get New Zealand back on track.

VETENT WELCOMES NEW VET

There’s a new vet in town, just in time for VetEnt Darfield’s annual focus on pet dental health.

Beato Lenoa, who goes by the name ‘B’, has joined VetEnt Darfield to look after the area’s pets and farm animals.

Originally from the Fiji Islands, B has experience in a range of technical and veterinary roles and is already enjoying getting to know the variety of animals coming into the busy VetEnt Darfield practice. “I’m seeing breeds that I’ve not seen in Fiji; it keeps things reallyinteresting,” he says.

Oral Health, a keyfocus. Oral Health, a keyfocus. Oral Health, keyfocus. Oral Health, keyfocus. During September and October, oral health is a key focus for B and the rest of the

The team is focusing on preventative checks and cleans – letting pet parents know that their pets need regular dental checks just like people. There are free checks available from their caring and expert nurse team, with all checks going into the draw to win one of ten $250 prize packs full of pet dental products and a $100 Prezzy

Card.

WEATHER HOLDS FOR SWAP MEET

‘There is no bad day at a Swap Meet’, was the motto of the volunteers organising the Hororata Mechanical Swap Meet held recently.

“In typical spring fashion, the forecast was variable and volatile as we neared Saturday, with 10 – 20cm of snow forecast at one point,” says Hororata Community Trust co-ordinator Cindy Driscoll. “We know that coming to the Hororata Mechanical Swap Meet is a pilgrimage for people, some setting off 2 -3 days before from as far away as Wellington and Te Anau, so with the rural Kiwi attitude we forged ahead and sent out as

many positive vibes to the weather gods as possible!”

Site holders and keen buyers started showing up on Friday just as the heavens opened.

“Everyone turned up with a smile, trailers ladened with mechanical treasures. At this point, we knew no matter the weather, we had to make this event happen! We are lucky at the Hororata Domain as we could utilize the indoor barn and covered stalls for those who set up on Friday.”

Hororata saw 50ml of rain from 11am on Friday through to 3am on Saturday. Cindy says when she left the Hororata Domain at 8pm

Friday night, there was surface water everywhere. “However, we know after 12 years of running events here, the water drains quickly. With the rain stopping at 3am, the Domain was clear of surface water by the time we arrived the next morning at 6am.” The gates opened on the day and 1000 buyers got to browse 75 sellers’ sites. Cindy says the numbers were a smaller than last year, but … “considering the weather forecast, we were stoked.”

John Foster and Dave Pomare started the Hororata Mechanical Swap Meet in 2010 and ran it until 2020, when they handed over the reins to the Hororata CommunityTrust.

“John and Dave remain at the heart of the event, but now they can enjoy it without any admin!

The Trust is committed to staying true to their vision of this being a Mechanical Swap Meet with no bric-a-brac but equally, we can now use the event to benefit more of the community.”

This year the event benefits six community groups, including the Glentunnel Resident Committee, Hororata Historical Society, Glentunnel Primary School, Hororata Primary School, Rural Women Darfield Division, and the Hororata Community Trust.

“As always, it takes passionate volunteers to make these great Hororata events happen; we are grateful for their time and energy,” Cindysays.

CIVIL DEFENCE EXERCISE

Selwyn and Christchurch Emergency Support Teams (SEST and CEST) came together for the first time to test their preparedness and coordination in a large joint civil defence exercise on Saturday 23 September at the West Melton Community Recreation Centre. The aim of the exercise was to setup a Civil Defence Welfare Centre to receive and manage displaced people and meet their needs during a simulated Alpine

Fault earthquake. During the course of six hours, volunteer actors presented with a variety of complex welfare needs and scenarios to test the teams. Overall, the joint exercise was successful and a valuable learning experience for the Selwyn and Christchurch Support Teams in collaborating and caring for displaced people during an emergency event like a major earthquake.

Brenda and Terry are going out for the evening. The last thing they do is put their cat out.

The taxi arrives, and as the couple walk out of the house, the cat scoots back in. Terry returns inside to chase it out.

Brenda, not wanting it known that the house would be empty, explains to the taxi driver, “My husband is just going upstairs to say goodbye to my mother.” Several minutes later, an exhausted Terry arrives and climbs back into the taxi saying,

“Sorry I took so long, the stupid idiot was hiding under the bed and I had to poke her with a coat hanger several times before I could get her to come out!”
