Across the world in Edinburgh, Scotland, two New Zealanders are shaking up the competition at the International Deaf Bowls Championship.

Darfield local Hazel Littlejohn and AdamBalliefrom Auckland have both respectively won their singles events in the challenging international competition.

From Scotland Hazel says, “I am over the moon, ecstatic, and incredibly proud to have won the singles event beating Scotland21-11”.

“It's an achievement for both of us from the southern hemisphere in achieving this on so much slower greens thaninNZ.”

The event is organised by the International Deaf Lawn Bowls Federation and is held every four years. Deaf or hard of hearing players from all over the world come together to compete in singles, pairs, triples, andfours.

This year is the first time that New Zealand Deaf Bowls has major support from Bowls New Zealand supplying the group with coaching at their Easter campaswellasuniforms.

“We were toldliketheNZ Black Jacks, in their preparation for the Commonwealth Games, that we would need to put in 6-10 hours a week of training on lawns or croquet greens,” Hazel says. “The northern hemisphere greens are so

much slower compared to the quickgreensover here.”

She would also like to thank allthose atDarfieldBowlsClub and the sponsors who have supported her on her journey toachieveher goal.

“I'm so pleased that I put in the hard yards on my lawn, croquet greens in town and at West Melton Bowling Club, for

whom I give thanks to for allowing me to practice there most days in the run up to the event.”

Hazel also competed in the doubles event, which finished on September 12 and she will then take some time out visiting family before returning to New Zealand in early October.

A DREAM COME TRUE

Joanne Smith of Kirwee is ‘beyond’ excited to be selected as a finalist and firsttime entrant for 2023 World of WearableArt(WOW)Show.

Joanne is one of 120 finalist designers from 23 countries for the 33rd annual show being held on September 20October 8 in Wellington this year.

“The magic started when visiting the World of Wearable Arts Museum in Nelson with our young family many years back,” Joanne says. “It became a yearly visit to Nelson.”

But when she attended WOWs spectacular shows in Wellington, she discovered they were really something not to be missed. And so began her own desire to create a garment for the show, however over a period of six years, entering three garments, she was unsuccessful…untilnow!

While she can’t reveal too much about the garment, Joanne says, “Creating a garment from metallic thread brought so much pleasure and joy from the meaning behind the garment and creating a new style I hadn't explored

before”.

“It’s a dream come true! I’m so thankful for my supportive family and friends who have journeyed with me this far and supported me at this year’s show.”

Joanne believes her success is down to holding on to the dream andtokeepcreating.

Thewinnerswill beannounced on Opening Night, September 22inaliveceremonyafter the show.

FINDING HIS VOICE

An enterprising young lad in Springfield, Josh Henderson (16)isfollowinghisdreams.

Josh’s interest in motor racing sparked a desire to become a commentator when he was just 13 years old. He says, “I watched my first race in 2019, and I was very lucky that it was one of the best races of the year, the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix, and I've beenhookedever since”.

Josh began commentating online and as his confidence grew, he joined online racing leagues, notably Prime Motorsportearlythis year.

“One of my close mates, Louis Sharp, who currently races in British F4, was racing in the South Island Formula Ford series at the time before he

got called up by Carlin,” Josh says. “I thought I may as well just give it a go and email out saying I'd be keen to commentate if they needed someone, and thankfully they did.”

He met with the Formula Ford board, and they were impressed by the examples he provided, and let him jump in the box for the 2022-23 season. Ruapuna, his home track in Yaldhurst, was impressed when Josh did the Formula Ford races and allowed him to do extra races the following day, requesting that he come back in the foreseeablefuture.

What Josh loves about commentating is that racing always provides great action

and entertainment so that's a verykeyreason but also just the atmosphere. “The people around are so kind, very passionate about what they do, and they love it, but also personally for me it's the adrenaline rush that I get when I end up talking to hundreds or thousands of people at the track or on a live stream.”

He says that while there is a lot of variation in commentary styles, you must decide how to execute yourself on the mic. “The main thing is enthusiasm, you're there to entertain people and inform them of what's going on around the track. If someone's going for an overtake, you need to make it sound exciting and entertaining, or if there's acrash, youneedtoshowhow important it is for driver safety and the championship/race at hand. What you don't want to doissoundreallyboring.”

Josh now has another goal in his sights - to get behind the wheel! But, he says, it’s expensive and he is currently offering sponsorship packages to reach his $16k-18k target. To find out how your business can sponsor Josh email: jhend700@gmail.com.

These lending options, if used

for your home, are just some of the ways you can add value inaverycost-effectiveway.

Keeping your home current is very important to keep the value of this main asset.

Repairs and maintenance are equally important in ensuring your home keeps up with the market.

If you have rental properties that need upgraded to the ‘Healthy Home’ standard,

these energy saver loans are ideal. A $50,000 interest free loan for five years means you could repay it in full at $193 per week.

CAR CUP HOLDER BOOSTERS

Darfield High School students and Cup Boost CEOs

Molly Macpherson and Jayden

Lancaster saw a gap in the market when they both struggled with large drink bottles not fitting in car cup holders. The idea soon took hold for their participation in the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) as part of their Business Studiescourse.

“We noticed that lots of people drive with their drinks spilling in their cars or bottles rolling under their brakes,” Jayden says. “We wanted to create an innovative and sustainable eco-friendly way to solve people's everyday problems.”

The program’s entrepreneurial businesses must produce a product, market it, and sell it and display the YES logo on anypackaging or marketing.

“We have to complete four

challenges over the year, and we get marks for them. The goal is to get the highest marks out of 100% for all four challenges,” Molly says. “The winner of each region goes on a free trip to Wellington to compete there and from there the winner goes on an overseas experience into the business world.” The pair is currently ranked sixth out of 80schools.

Molly and Jayden are hoping to win their regional finals and make it to nationals in Wellington. Their special cups are made from are made from recycled, biodegradable, productsand arecompostable. The enterprising pair have set a goal to sell 75 cups by the end of the year and believe their product will make a difference within the environment and to people's lives by having a safe, secure

place for their beloved drink bottles.

A REWARDING SEASON

The Darfield High School senior A netball team has been amazing this season. Every week has seen an improvement not only as individuals but also the culture of the team both on and off the court, which was a main goal this year to work on their teamenvironment. The team had tough competition playing in super net reserve with some close games either losing by one or winning by one, but the girls had a strong fourth quarter, which helped win those close games. Throughout the season the girls had many compliments from umpires whoenjoyedrefereeingthem. Finishing third in super-net reserve was an achievement for the girls and boosted confidence for the SISS tournament. One of the team’s goals was to finish one place higher than last year and they had a few tough games, one being Papanui who were hungry to beat them for the firsttime.

The girls' next game was against Avonside for semis; their main goal for this game was to keep composed, concentrate on discipline, and smart play as they were so close to beating them all season. They played the best game all season, winning by nine. This also meant finals for B grade against Rolleston for 1st and 2nd. Before the game, a couple of selectors said that it was so lovely to watch the girls and wished them good luckfor their nextgame.

The girls were happy they made it to finals for B grade placing second out of 32

teams - four places higher than last year. Another achievement for two girls, Kate Hefferon and Kayla Holland, was being selected for the tournament team for B grade, onlyafew girlsget picked. Once the girls received their trophy, they discovered that the last time Darfield placed secondin Bgradewasin1987 and now they have the trophy back for 2023. Going into A

grade next year is an excellent challenge for the girls for 2024SISS.

Throughout the season it has been an absolute pleasure coaching these girls with lots oflaughsandcelebrations and manager Kym Sinclair is also proud they all played so well thisseason.

KIWIS GOING BACKWARDS

I believe New Zealand should be a country where, if you work hard, you can get ahead. But after years of economic mismanagement by Labour, topped off by two years of rampant inflation, huge increases in interest rates, and a shrinking economy, most Kiwisaregoing backwards. As we all know, Selwyn is one of the fastest-growing districts in the country, and with that comes a huge population of families - in fact, approximately a quarter of Selwyn’s population is under theageof18. No matter how hard families work though, many are being leftbehind.

The New Zealanders who work hard, sometimes juggling multiple jobs and family responsibilities, still can’t get ahead because inflation and high tax rates are eating away attheir incomes.

That’s why National has announced our tax policy aimed at giving relief to those in the squeezed middle who simplycan’tkeepup.

From July 2024, a National Government will shift income tax brackets to compensate for inflation, expand tax credits to reach more modest income earners, introduce the FamilyBoost childcare tax credit, and increase Working for Families tax credits for

working families (from 1 April 2024).

Under National’s tax plan, a family with children on the average household income of $120,000, will be up to $250 a fortnight better off. Those on the average household income with no children will receive up to $100 more every fortnight.

People know they can trust Nationalwiththeeconomy. It’s been a tough couple of years for New Zealanders, but National will rebuild our economy and reduce the cost of living so that we can all get ahead.

MALVERN U3A BRAIN HEALTH AND DEMENTIA

On a beautiful spring day in Darfield, we were most fortunate to have as our speaker, Dr Mathew Croucher speaking on brain health and dementia. Based at Burwood Hospital, Dr Croucher looks after many age-related illnesses and specialises in all dementia relatedillnesses. Helaughingly calls himself, ‘an old age shrink’.

Born in Canterbury but raised in Nelson, hespent thelast 20 years in Canterbury working in the health system for Dementia, Alzheimer’s, and the Parkinson’s Societies of NewZealand. His message to us was clear, care about your brain, and we can slow down dementia! Dementia is chronic brain failure just like chronic heart failure and kidney failure. Chronic means slow and progressivedeterioration. No one is born with dementia and reassuringly he said, “Senior moments don’t count” - a great relief to many of us in the audience. Contrary to popular belief dementia is not usually hereditary although there is a small number of people who have a particular gene, which increases their chanceofthedisease.

It should be remembered that dementia is a disease and although medication can improve the quality of life and,

in some cases, slow down the symptoms, there is no known cure despite the hype put out by scientists. To this end it is important that we keep our brain as healthyas we can. We mustlearntoloveour brain. There are ten ways to keep your brain healthy Dr Croucher explained, with the top of the league being exercise and diet. Just walking 30 mins three times a week is good, reducing the amount of red meat eaten and eating plenty of fruit and leafy vegetables is a good way to start as a first goal.

Things to avoid are smoking, excessive alcohol, hazardous use of drugs and head injuries (most head injuries in the elderly male are falls from ladders). Get someone younger todothejob.

The overall message from Dr Croucher was ‘Use it or Lose it’. Reduce stress and anxiety, take care of your blood pressure and cholesterol; have cognitive stimulation and socialinteraction.

This was an informative and easily understood talk and gave us plenty to think about andputintopractice.

Our next meeting in October will feature two speakers from Frontera and how they benefit our local community. Visitors are welcome to come and see whatMalvernU3Aisabout.

CLEARING SALE POPULAR

It was a big day out for organisers, vendors, and buyers alike at the Greendale School PTA Clearing Sale held on the Worsfold family farm at thebeginningofthismonth.

PTA chairperson Chris McDonald says that although the group was initially apprehensive about running the event consecutively from last year, they were blown away by the local businesses and individuals who reached out to them to offer support and donations of goods and services while expecting nothinginreturn.

“Overall the generosity and support we received was absolutely paramount to being able to run an event like this and we consider ourselves extremely lucky to be part of suchanamazingcommunity.”

The day took shape with a total of 419 lots. Chris says, “Anyone who attends clearing sales will know that is a lot but currentlywe are sitting at 89%

of all items being sold, which we consider to be equally impressive.”

Just on four hundred buyers registered and the sale also attracted a large non-buying audience on the day, a substantial increase on last year'snumbers.

The majority of items were sold on behalf of the vendor with the school taking a commission but there were also items sold with the entire sale price generously donated totheschool.

There was plenty of food and drink available on the day and to avoid any waste, the PTA donated excess food left over in the chiller to the Darfield FoodBank.

The amount raised on the day is yet to be confirmed but

Chris says all the indicators suggest that with the increased size of the sale, additional attendees, the addition of a bar, and more food options, the amount

LOCAL FLASH FICTION STORY

Garet

The Malvern Writer’s Café recently ran a flash fiction competition within the group. Judged by local novelist and flash fiction writer Sandra Arnold, the entries based on the topic ‘catastrophe’ werevaried.

Three stories captured the judge’s eye. First placegetter was Laine Barker receiving Sandra’s comments, "Terrific ending! Good dialogue and sense of danger". Second place went to Brian DonnellyandthirdplacetoJoYoung. Laine’s250-wordstoryfeaturesinthisweek’sissue.

Ratastrophy by Laine Barker

She walked into the kitchen and stopped short, drawing in her breath she startled at the bodylyingonthefloor.

“What have you done,” she whispered to her husband, surveying the catastrophic scene.

A clutter of pots and broken china, upturned chairs, smashedglassware.

Standing by the stove, her husband, claw hammer still in his grip. Blood covered his hand, splattered about the kitchen floor, sprayed onto the cupboardsandstove.

The fight was valiant but eventually the lodger succumbed.

Shaking his head, he explained. “He cannot keep creeping in here like he owns the place, scaring you and the kids, eating us out of house and home. He even tried to

open your medication the other day, God knows what would have happened if I hadn'tcomein.”

“He put up a good fight. I chased him all round the kitchen before I managed to hit him. Even then he kept tryingtorun.”

“I could have handled him if youjustgave mechance.”

“You really think tea and sympathy would have got him to leave? If I’d handled it my way from the start, he wouldn't

have become such a nuisance.”

She knew she had married a hunter. She was a lover not a fighter. She struggled with brutality. Hewalkedoutside.

Sadly, she reached for a brush and shovel, she gently carried thedeadcarcassoutside. Yes, he was a nuisance, but surely there were more humane ways to dispose of a buck-rat.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE

Taking photos on her iPad is just one of the many hobbies that Angie Early enjoys. When she entered her photo titled ‘Dad’s Farm Toys’ in the IHC Capture a Moment Photo Competition, Angie and her family had no idea that her photo of a hay rake in the sun would steal the hearts of people from around the country. Angie’s photo was one of 28 finalists and went on to win the People’s Choice

Angie’s mum, Christine, says it was a very exciting time for her daughter and photography is a new skill that Angie is learning. “We are grateful to all the wonderful people in the community who got behind Angie and voted for her.”

Local teams enjoyed placings on the day with Sheffield Sharks taking out first place for Year 1-6 Girls, while Springfield Speedsters won first place for Year 1-6 Boys, and Springfield Shredders won first place for mixed Year 1-6. Fastest Girl Y1-6, Nina Wakefield, and Fastest Boy Y1 -6, Taj Armstrong, were also fromSpringfieldSchool. Students made the most of the experiences offered. Pictured below is Lillie from Sheffield School who says, “It was scary because I thought I was going to miss my race”. While Saffie says, “I learnt how to keep my body facing down the mountaininsteadofturning”. For some students it was the first time they had competed in the event. Indiana says, “It was a great event and good for my first time learning how to ski race. It was great to have some practice runs throughthecourse”.

For others, like Issy, it was an adrenaline rush. “It felt like I was going so fast I might almosttakeoff!”

Other local school teams that took partintheracewerefrom Glentunnel, Hororata, Darfield andWestMelton.

The Canterbury Primary and CAIM Schools Duathlon was held on its postponement date, Monday, September 4 in cold and windy conditions. The annual event, held at Ruapuna Speedway, consisted of eight races with one race for each year group and each gender category within these four-year groups. On the day theYears5&6ran2km, biked
