A phone call caused a bit of a stir recently at TM Dance World, when Tara McKeown received a phone call from a talent booker on behalf of What Now asking if the dance group had a contemporary or acrobatic item.
Tara says, "Fortunately for us our intermediate team has been working hard all year on competitive dances as we are travelling to Showcase, Australia in January, so we jumped at the opportunity to perform our contemporary routine called 'Welcome to the Jungle' on live TV".
The dance routine, normally around three minutes long needed to be adapted to a maximum of one and a half minutes for the show. She says the routine was changed on the Wednesday and on the Friday, they rehearsed at Whitebait Media studios-home to What Now, Brain Busters and The Feed.
"We were so excited to be given a full tour of all the sets, sound, and control rooms by producer, Adam," says Tara.
"We were also doing our rehearsals with the very lovely stars of the show, Trubie and Stella!"
On Sunday, August 27, the intermediate performance team had a very early 4:30am start and with their call time at 6:30am, they were able to have one more rehearsal with the camera crew.
"At around 8:45am, we jumped
into place to perform. At the conclusion of the performance, the girls were interviewed, and spoke about our time dancing at the Hororata Night Glow."
If you would like to watch the performance, it can be viewed on TVNZ OnDemand.

WHY BUY WHEN YOU CAN HIRE
There’s a new
kid on the block in Darfield!
Trafco Hire Centre has recently opened its doors to the public. The new business aims to make it easier for local tradies, DIYers and home handymen or handywomen to hire the right equipment for the right job.
Manager Alan Gray says, “We have a full range of hire gear available. There is nothing like this in the immediate area and, as an added service to our local customers, we’re also offering free delivery within a 10km radius of Darfield.”
Alan says the delivery service, which can also go further afield, is just one of the personal aspects of the hire centre. “We love the idea of building relationships with our customers and chatting to them when we deliver and pick up.”
Rentals include civil machinery, DIY and home handyman equipment, garden tools and machinery, and a concrete division that includes mixers, cutters and breakers.
“We are the only ones in the area with access gear available including scaffolding, scissor lifts, ladders and a cherry picker,” Alan says. “We also have diggers, a threeton tip truck, and a multitude of trailers.”
Trailers include furniture removal, stock, horse float, transport and a tip trailer. All battery operated tools and machinery come with a battery two-pack and charger.
“We are trying to cater for everyone,” Alan says. “If you don’t know how to use a piece of machinery, we’ll make sure you get a demonstration so you feel confident before taking it away.”
Booking hire equipment can be done online, in person at the centre, or by phone or email.
“We’ve made our service transparent so people can go online and check whether a piece of machinery is available on the day and time they want it for. They can book it online or give us a call.”
Alan says the pricing is competitive and the hire centre’s location is handy. And while the centre is not open over the weekend at this stage, Trafco Hire Centre does offer weekend rates for all those special projects.
For more information and to check out what machinery is available, head online to www.trafcohire.co.nz or visit Alan at 1B Cardale Street, Darfield or phone 022 456 8402.

SCHOOL SHAVES FOR A CAUSE
Lunchtime at school is usually an opportunity for Darfield High School students and teachers to take a break from their daily educational routine, however, on August 29 four teachers and 16 students decided to take part in the school’s fundraising Shave for a Cure event.
The event was organised by Year 13 students Rylee Shepherd and Jess Stewart. For those who didn’t want to shave their heads, they could still take part in the Wacky Hair Day, held on the same day. The fundraising goal was set at $10,000, with a total of $9,006.40 raised on the day. Principal Andy England says, “I
am very proud of the Shave for a Cure leadership team, who ran a smooth event and raised a huge amount. DHS is having a very challenging time with cancers and appreciates the generosity of our community towards cancer charities”.
Spokesperson for the event Jess Stewart says, “This was an amazing effort! We also had a few hairdressers from around the area who offered to help with the event. Thank you to Mandie Perkins (from Shimmer Shine Beauty), Alex Moki (from New Image Hair Studio) and Niki Medhurst! We would also like to say a huge thank you to the participants and to everyone who donated towards
this for helping to change the lives of those who are living with leukaemia and their families across New Zealand!” Jess also adds that if people would like to help the school reach their $10,000 goal, it’s not too late to donate. Contact the school for more information.

MINIMISE YOUR POWER BILLS
There is free solar energy available to us every day - the sun. You just need a high performing PV (photo voltaic) solar panel system that is professionally installed to convert it into electricity.
Green Spark Solar recommends and installs premium grade Trina Dual Glass Solar Panels along with internationally sourced inverters and electrical equipment to give their customers the best performance output in the long term. These panels come with a 30-year performance warranty. Single glass panels have a 25-year warranty. The company specialises in grid-tied, hybrid and fully offgrid systems. They also supply and install a range of solar batteries where required. Many other situations can have solar power such as dairy farms, and other commercial and industrial applications. The basic concept is that photo voltaic panels are installed on the roof or ground mounted and convert ultraviolet rays from the sun into electricity, at any time there is light available, which you can use within the home. The grid itself acts like a giant communal battery - any power that you
produce in excess to your needs is exported back to the grid and you receive credits for this on your power account. Green Spark Solar offers some of the latest technology in solar equipment providing electricity to all electrical items in your home or business including preferential heating of your hot water cylinder. Benefits of solar power:
• You save money. Up to 90% of your bill even without a battery in some situations.
• Solar Power is a top investment, with a rate of return well above bank deposits or even borrowing costs. Best of all it’s tax free.
• Do something great for the environment.
• Improve your independence and comfort.
• Enjoy a guaranteed investment, in the sense the
performance is covered by warranty for 25 years. “Go with the investment that rises every day”.
• It feels good to know power price increases will have little effect on your pocket in the future.
• Improve the value of your home. Solar powered houses are worth more and sell faster
Contact Tony, your local solar advisor (see contact details in advert alongside). He is happy to visit and evaluate what size solar system is best for you and your budget. Tony has had his own solar system for over three years, so has practical experience on solar performance in the Canterbury region. You can then make an informed decision with absolutely no pressure.

SPRING GLORY AT TERRACE STATION
The August open daySnowdrop Sunday - was beautiful, warm, and clear with no wind! Kate Foster and the volunteers welcomed 80 adults and lots of children, many of whom took advantage of the glorious conditions to enjoy their picnics on the lawns of the heritage property.
The next open day is on Sunday, September 10 from 11am to 3pm. The hellebores are still looking lovely, and the violets, primroses, and daffodils are all flowering in profusion, providing spring colour among the tall trees, some of which are over 150 years old. The Big Walkway is
showcasing the massive sequoias, and children can pick up a list of various items to be found in the garden and woodlands, which they can use to help their search. The Hutch, a renovated summer house, displays old farming and gardening tools along with some 19th century domestic items - a fascinating insight into earlier days. Visitors are invited to bring their picnics to enjoy in a sheltered spot. Woodland plants will be for sale including bulk snowdrops plus some giveaway plants to take home.
The $10 cash (no Eftpos available) entry fee goes to
the Terrace Station Charitable Trust. Children are free and wellies are advised for the woodlands. Terrace Station will be signposted from the Hororata roundabout and at Milnes Road. Please leave dogs at home. In case of doubtful weather conditions check the Terrace Station Facebook page.
The organisers look forward to welcoming keen gardeners, and the children, to the peaceful, natural environment of Terrace Station.
The property is open for group visits on other days by prior appointment: www.terracestation.org.nz.
CREATIVE WAYS WITH WASTE
The Selwyn Schools Waste Art competition enjoyed a great lineup of sustainable artistry with 30 entries from schools throughout the Selwyn district. An exhibition and presentation of the awards were held at Te Ara Ātea in Rolleston over the weekend of August 25-26. Lincoln Envirotown Trust project manager Dave Fitzjohn says, “We were once again very impressed with the number of entries and the hard work and creativity that had gone into the
art. Many members of the public were able to enjoy the exhibition”.The independent judges had a difficult job as there were so many high-quality entries. There were category winners for Intermediate and High School and an overall winning piece. Winners were Lachie Smolenski from Weedons School (Intermediate), Kathryn McKenzie from Rolleston College (High School) and the overall winners were Grace Anongngos and
Ingrid Acqino from Ellesmere College.
“All the works showed us how we can all think a bit differently about waste and endeavour to keep stuff out of landfill,” Dave says. A selection of artwork will be displayed at the Rediscover Waste and Sustainability Education Centre at the Pines Resource Recovery Park at Rolleston.

GENEROUS SUPPORT FOR DAFFODIL DAY
A beautiful sunny day highlighted the generous Daffodil Day support received by Malvern Cancer Support Group members and the many volunteers who were out collecting throughout the community and townships for the annual Cancer Society’s fundraiser.
The ‘Paint the Town Yellow’ competition was well-received by businesses throughout the townships, dressing their shop windows or having in-store
displays. Staff also dressed up in their ‘best yellow’.
Organiser Ainsley Burton says, “There was certainly a great vibe of support for this great cause. And it was a very close call for the winner Twisted Bunch in Darfield with a close second to Springfield Challenge, who edged out the other competitors with the Cancer Society message.
Congratulations to the winners and to all businesses who took part, it was an awesome effort and equally tough to choose a winner. Thank you all for supporting and helping promote Daffodil Day and to those who purchased bunches of fresh daffodils”.
Several local schools participated before and on the day creating entries with the old plastic daffodils, which were phased out this year.
“Again, this was a close call for the winner Sheffield Primary School using daffodils in the shape of their logo with a close second going to
Springfield Primary School with their daffodil-filled heart shape,” Ainsley says. “Also, a special mention to Greendale School for each of the students taking on their individual projects - well done! Great fundraising donations were made on the day with mufti or dressing in yellow or green.”
Other events or fundraising initiatives were the Property Brokers sausage sizzle raising $350, Darfield Bakery Biscuits raising $900 and the Springfield Fun Run/Walk, raising $460.
“The Malvern Cancer Support Group is grateful for a very successful fundraising effort and generous support! The amount raised in the Malvern
area was $11,000, which is amazing and is up on last year. This enables the Group to be able to support those diagnosed with Cancer and their families with drivers and other support.
Thank you to everyone who supported the Daffodil Day Fundraiser this year, as collectors, businesses, schools, and or those who gave so generously, it is very much appreciated.”

CANTERBURY WOMEN SINCE 1893
September marks the 130th anniversary of women's suffrage. The Edmond’s "Sure to Rise" image has long been an icon of female domesticity. In 1993, to celebrate the substantial contribution of women in Ōtautahi Canterbury since being granted suffrage, fibre artist Vivienne Mountfort created a large two-metre square felted wool artwork. The work depicts the factory and gardens, with images of women from Ōtautahi who have had an impact on the country’s history. This significant work of art will be on display at Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard House to mark 130 years of suffrage in Aotearoa New Zealand, alongside a selection of related archival material thanks to the University of Canterbury’s Macmillan Brown Library. The exhibition will include interactive elements for the public to celebrate the
achievements of women in their own lives. Entry is free from September 6 to December 3, 2023, at Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate
Sheppard House, 83 Clyde Road, Ilam. Open Wed to Sun, 10am - 4pm. Bookings can be made online through www.eventbrite.co.nz.
ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FOR LOCAL PIG FARMER
An innovative Canterbury pig farmer and committed industry leader has been recognised for his contribution to New Zealand’s pork sector with an Industry Lifetime Achievement award.
Chris Trengrove, who farms west of Christchurch on the Canterbury Plains, began his career in banking before switching to farming in the late 1980s.
He served on the NZPork Board for 15 years, nine of those as Chairman, and was instrumental in the development and introduction of the sector’s PigCare welfare assurance programme and a major review of import health standards.
Known for his innovative approach to pig farming, Mr Trengrove designed a novel purpose-built farrowing system to reduce piglet losses. He also pioneered artificial insemination for outdoor pig herds in New Zealand.
Brent Kleiss, chief executive of NZPork, says Mr Trengrove has made an immense contribution to the sector.
“Chris has invested time and energy serving our sector and New Zealand agriculture over many years and established international links with pork industries, researchers and organisations. He also has a deep commitment to research and pork industry training.”

SHOOTING SEASON WRAP UP
The winter Indoor target shooting season is now all but over and Malvern Target Shooting Association’s members have been busy with both individual and team competitions.
Some highlights were Charles Ellis winning B Grade at the Indoor National Championship, Blake Woolley won the Target Shooting NZ C Grade Postal championship and placed second in C Grade at the Indoor National Championship, Nick Oakley and Regan Dalley won their grades in the Christchurch and Ellesmere opens respectively. As well as several second placings in their grades: Seth Wright at South Canterbury, Charles at the South Island Open and also Ellesmere, and Regan at
the Ashburton Open.
Piper Benbow has been selected to represent New Zealand at the Oceania championships to be held in Brisbane this November, as she continues to work her way to her goal of Commonwealth and even Olympic Games selection. Piper will compete in the 10m Air Rifle and 50m 3 Position .22 rifle A teams and in the Prone 50m B team as well as an individual in all three competitions. Best of luck to Piper and her team.
Over the season Regan, Charles, Blake, Sarah Kennedy, Antoon VerStraten, Liam Barnhill, Blake Tamehana, and Craig Benbow have been members of the Plainsmen, (an 18-member combined team from the four small
neighbouring associations of Ashburton, Malvern, Ashley, and North Canterbury).
Last Thursday, the team contested the National Districts Championship Final against Eastern Force and came out as winners of the match and NDC Champions!
In late July a ten-member strong team travelled to Nelson along with 12 other associations from around the South Island for the Andrew & Faulkner Shield competition. While we didn’t exceed our expectations, we did meet our goals and look forward to Oamaru next year and the coming seasons as we build our depth, and our newer shooters start to become comfortable with this level of competition.
BODKIN SHIELD RESULTS
Two teams from Darfield Gun Club entered in the Bodkin Shield recently.
The first day, held at Moa Creek, was cloudy, breezy, and cold. Eleven scores of 20/20 were spread among the team, with the best performer, Warwick Hill shooting possibles in the second and third rounds but falling short of a prize.
Day two at Wanaka Gun Club was cloudy to start with and soon turned to a cold rain. There were only three possibles over the day’s 20 target matches with Brodie Mangels scoring two of them. He was able to outperform the opposition to win the top prize in the shoot-off.
The Bodkin Shield Match was then held with the following results, Brodie shooting for the A team commenced with
an 13/15. Murray Robertson started the B team off with an 11/15. Second shooters Ron Greatorex followed up with 13/15 and Warwick Hill scored a 14/15 to creep the B team closer.
Duncan Jefferis supplied 14 for the A team with Emma Stuart contributing 15/15 to level the two Malvern teams.
Paul Templeton steadied the A team with a possible, while Marcel Van Leeuwen dropped a single. Dave Folley and Rupert Wright scored matching 14/15. Steve Gawn dropped a target while Bevan Brown brought the B team home with a possible bringing the two Club teams’ level again. The team scores of 83/90 were surpassed by Gorge Road Club, who finished on 87/90 to win the Bodkin Shield.
Day three was at Alexandra
with better conditions with only light winds, cloudy but clearing.
Ron managed a pair of 20’s in rounds two and three, which put him in the prize shoot-off and winning High Over All for the day.
Once again there were some highs and lows with Murray not taking enough ammo to the lanes, Robin Digby again forgetting to put ammo in his gun to rejoin the “Click Club” and following Murray's example as well. So, it will be August 2024 when we will try again. More practice will need to be done!

SCHOOL’S FUNDRAISING PROJECT
So far, Glentunnel School has raised $66,613.91 of its $86k target for its community bike track. The school recently raised $13,385 selling raffle tickets with 10 prizes totalling $3,500 in conjunction with the Hororata Community Trust, where it was launched at the nightglow event.
Principal Ed Trotter says, “The result was a great financial outcome and awareness of the Glentunnel School and community bike track. The quiz evening held at the Hororata Golf Club on Friday, August 4 raised a further $1,870 with 18 teams of four competing for the bragging rights of best quiz team on the night.”
With only $20,000 left to raise before the planned construction late November 2023, Ed Trotter is grateful to the community and trusts for backing the fundraising efforts for this unique bike track, which will be “a special taonga to all”. Two of the recent
successful trust applications were $5,000 from Four Winds Foundation and $2,500 from Malvern Farmers' Veterinary Club Charitable Trust. Further trust applications are being completed to ensure all funds are raised before the construction in November ‘23. Ed says he is overjoyed and very grateful to the local community and nation-wide supporters for getting behind this project, which will benefit multiple users for years to come.
The school's next fundraiser event is the inaugural GTS Cyclethon on September 15, from 1.25pm to 2.25pm at the Glentunnel Domain. Tamariki will cycle laps of one of three designated tracks (beginner, intermediate or advanced) and gain sponsorship from family and friends for every lap completed or a general donation for cycling for an hour.
“The Bike Track committee selected this event as a way
RUNNING THE DISTANCE
for the school children to fundraise personally, while promoting cycling, scootering, hauora and community,” Ed says. “Anyone is welcome to watch the 110 tamariki cycling and scootering for this wonderful cause or, indeed, sponsor tamariki to achieve their lap goal.”
All the school needs now is settled weather for the event, with a back-up date planned for Friday 22 September (last day for term 3).

The Great Naseby Water Race (GNWR) is held in the middle of Winter, in the small town of Naseby - the highest town in NZ. The Event has many options including a team 60km, and individual distances of 50km, 80km, 100km, 160km/100 miles, 200km, 200 miles.
The course is set around a 10km loop - one half along a gravel road and the other half set in the stunning Naseby Forest beside the water race that gives the event its name. Originally the water race was built for gold mining around 1860 and now it provides the water supply to the town of Naseby.
The hub, set-up midway is buzzing with athletes and crew, camping out for days and nights...in some pretty chilly conditions.
The atmosphere, a relaxed, fun, family style event, with many of the same faces returning every year, and new faces joining in on the fun, only to come back the following year and join the family.
Sheffield local Mark Beattie competed in and won the 200km event, finishing in 29 hours. 1 minute and 45 seconds.
He is thankful to his wife Lauren who was crewing and for those that were supporting and ran a few laps with him and kept him moving when the fatigue and cold were setting in.
Julia Chamberlain, who now resides in Ashburton won her 50km women category in a time of 4 hours, 12 minutes and 46 seconds. She went on to compete the following weekend in the Scenic Circles Backyard Ultra in Timaru. Completing a 6.7km loop every hour, on the hour, until you can’t do anymore. Julia was the last woman standing and fourth last standing with three men ahead of her. She ran 194.3km officially but 200km on her watch.

At Darfield Food & Clothing Bank, we are always grateful for the amazing support the Malvern community has given us. As you know things are tight these days and the money does not go as far as it used to. We have some funding for purchasing this month, but we are low on: frozen foods, particularly meat, plus eggs and dried goods. If anyone can help, that would be amazing. Any donations can be dropped off at the Malvern News office (open Mon-Fri, 9am - 4pm).
If you need food assistance, please get in touch or if you want to make a financial donation, please contact Rose Craven 027 532 4888.
