The Darfield Bricktacular 2023 event attracted around 730 people of all ages through its doors last weekend. PTA members and event organisers Emily Mitchell, Kelly Buckland and Maria MacFarlane were pleased with the day.

“People were wowed by the 44 tables of amazing LEGO exhibitor displays,” Emily says. “We had 85 individual creations built by members of the community on display, and eight Malvern schools and preschools entered in our Inter-school Competition.”

All three of the competition categories offered prizes and the judging panel, Sam Broughton, Lydia Gliddon and former LEGO Masters NZ contestant Jason de Vries, had a tough time choosing the winners with so much creativity, invested time and energies visible in all displays.

The competition theme was to ‘Design and Build a new Landmark or Place for your Town’. Hororata Primary School’s entry received first place with their design, ‘Future Sports Centre at Hororata Primary School’.

Annabels Educare came first in the preschool section with their fun town built on a whiteboard. The People’s

Choice was awarded to Ivan and Tamsin with their models of Christchurch, including New Regent Street and the Public Trust Building.

Children and adults got creative in the play areas provided by House of Bricks and also made the most of the bake sale, sausage sizzle and coffee van. Local business Taszelle was hugely popular with her brick themed t-shirts and accessories, and Crafty Kids was kept busy with their creative stall, where children could sit and paint their own minifigure or brick shaped plaster of Paris.

Bricktacular was considered an outstanding success with the objective being not only to raise funds but to also host an event for the Malvern community bringing family, friends, schools and communities together to enjoy an affordable and fun day for everyone.

The PTA would like thank all those who took part and look forward to running the event again.

THE MAGIC OF LEGO

TherecentBricktacular brought back the magic of Lego at Annabel’s Darfield 4-Year-Olds Kindergarten.

Centre manager Hayley Serong says, “The Kindergarten worked hard to create their entry - Lego is something that we will all remember spending hours as children intricately building away, using our imagination to create a myriad of things. Today most of the Lego that you can purchase comes in a box with a list of instructions on exactly how to build the kit inside”.

She says she enjoyed seeing the imagination, the creativity, the problem solving and the

joy on children’s faces as their ideas came to life in front of them.

“During our group mat times, the children spent time designing and planning their ideas to create a new playground in Darfield made of Lego. We worked together,

communicated our ideas, planned our design, and then got to work on our individual pieces. It was great to see children that may not normally choose to play in this area finding such pleasure and skill in building their chosen playground item.”

SPONSORSHIP ENABLES RETENTION

Sponsorship by Mark Terry and Karen Hennessy from Bayleys Real Estate has enabled Darfield Cricket Club to run a Youth Academy this season. The squad is made up of 20 local lads, between Year 11-13, who either represent the Club currently or still live locally but go to school outside the area and still have strong ties to the Club and plan to represent Darfield Cricket Club after they finish school.

The sponsorship included training shirts for the entire squad and the funding to enable the hire of the NZ Cricket High Performance

Centre at Lincoln over a 5-week period.

Mark and Karen say, “We decided to sponsor the academy because it is related to youth and sport, which is something we are both passionate about. The cricket academy provides the opportunity for the boys, aged 14-17, to be upskilled in a professional environment.”

Darfield Cricket Club president Dave Beatty is appreciative of the sponsorship. “The Darfield Cricket Club is extremely grateful for Mark and Karen’s sponsorship,” Dave says. “The aim is to retain the boys and have them continue to

represent the Club in the future. It is a fantastic pathway for these players, who will either play for Darfield Colts in the Metro Competition or play for their school before returning to play for the Darfield Senior and/or the Darfield Premier team in the Canterbury Country competition.”

Junior Club Co-ordinator Dave Galletly helped set up the Academy to ensure the sustainability of future cricket in the Malvern area.

Darfield Premier coach Shannon McAleer is helping to train the boys along with some of the Premier players.

XMAS IN DARFIELD

A new Darfield Christmas committee met for the first time to begin planning for Christmas. This year the Darfield Residents Association and Darfield Life Church will join with the Malvern Community Board to bring Christmas to Darfield.

Last year, the Malvern Community Board received a lot of feedback from the community about how important it is for Santa’s grotto to continue in Darfield. The community board discussed it at length when prioritising projects for the board and agreed to make it a top priority

and engage other local groups to form a committee.

The committee consists of six members from the above named groups and one independent, Cr. Bob Mugford, who founded Santa’s Grotto in Darfieldwithhiswife,Pam.Over the years, the pair have put in extensive effort to ensure children in Malvern all receive a gift and an opportunity to meetSanta.

Malvern Community Board member Sharn Nu'u says, “The group is honored to continue to work with Cr. Mugford and continue his and his wife’s legacyinourcommunity”.

When West Melton was rezoned into the Rolleston College zone, the bus service was planned to be phased out by the end of 2023. The bus route will end at Sandy Knolls Rd, 4km from West Melton. Principal Andy England says the school would not get Ministry of Education funding if the school did decide to run a bus to West Melton.

To the Editor:

To whom it may concern,

An editorial was published last week in the Selwyn Times with the headline – New pool likely for Sheffield. I would like to clear up the limited information in this article and add some context. No decisions have been made and the community has not been consulted on options yet. I have been looking into alternative options for the Sheffield pool.

I have approached the school to see if they would entertain the idea of a new pool being built on school grounds, and to put it back into community hands. The school has asked for more information on what a proposal might look like. I haven’t been able to get these types of options to the council table for consideration, so anything discussed is purely hypothetical. I wanted to explore economical options for the community to retain their asset for many years to come. Watch this space and hopefully some options can be up for discussion soon.

Donut topping wearing thin: Donut topping wearing thin: Donut topping wearing Donut topping wearing Springfield’s iconic donut is due for another paint job and its next refurbishment will be its fifth since 2020. Due the nature of its construction, the Council has struggled to keep on top of the well-loved attraction’s maintenance. However, this year a full plan is in place covering preparation, epoxy and the type of paint products used. The original Springfield donut was installed in 2006 based on the popular ‘Simpson’s’ tv programme and is a drawcard for those stopping in the township on their way to and from the West Coast.

Successful test run: Successful test run: A new video game being developed with the Selwyn Youth Council will soon be ready for the public after a successful test run. The game, Super Mayor, is described as a feel-good, 2D game where people play a councillor character in a rural New Zealand farming district. The goal of the hilarious, story-rich adventure is to solve problems, meet the public, and become mayor. The next step in the game’s development will involve input from the Youth Council in creating localised content, designing maps for different areas of the district, and establishing the different levels and characters people interact with. Super Mayor will be available free, and people can add to their wish list on the gaming platform Steam.

NICOLA GRIGG - OPINION PIECE

For the final two weeks of the 53rd parliament, the Labour government has kept the House in urgency, rushing through all the legislation it wants completed before parliament is dissolved next week, and the election campaign begins in earnest. Unfortunately for ratepayers, that means it has passed into law both its new version of the Resource Management Act (now split into two Acts, called the Natural and Built Environments Act and the Spatial Planning Act), as well as its water reform agenda, commonly known as Three Waters.

Labour's Three Waters has been a disaster from the start, and it has now passed the fourth and final piece of law that will remove the ownership and management of water infrastructure assets from our elected councils and give them tothe unelectedmegaentities. My thanks to all residents across Selwyn who have made their opposition known, and I can only say I am sorry we didn’t have the numbers to prevent this law change. What I

can promise however, is that under a National government this undemocratic law will be goneinthefirst100days.

Labour introduced almost 300 pages of amendments to its unworkable Three Waters bill just hours before it was to be debated.Theoriginalbillalone is just over 300 pages, and these additional last minute changes show just how unworkable Labour’s Three Waterswillbe.

There are significant changes such as the Chatham Islands being included again after previouslybeingexcluded, and moving the date the bill comes into law from 2024 to immediately after it's passed –possibly as soon as this week.

National’s water policy will return assets to councils, and set up strict rules for water quality and financial stability so Kiwis can be confident in their water services while keeping them in local hands wheretheybelong.

Equally, we will repeal Labour’sRMAreplacementbills by Christmas 2023 if elected onOctober14th.

Labour has spent six years workingonRMAreformbuthas managed to design a complex new regime that will make it evenhardertogetthingsdone

by increasing bureaucracy, removing local decisionmaking, and putting our decarbonisationgoalsatrisk.

It will stymie the investment and sustainable development of the environment that New Zealand needs, including in renewable electricity generation.

The new bills will also significantly increase legal complexity and litigation. New Zealand simply cannot afford theextensivelitigationthatthe billswillinevitablyproduce.

We can all agree the RMA needs fixing, but the new framework must actually improve things and be worth the considerable cost of change. What the Government has come up with is not thesolution.

National will campaign on our own changes to the RMA, someofwhichwehavealready announced, including oneyear consenting for major infrastructure and renewable energy projects, alongside our GoingforHousingGrowthplan. If elected, we will legislate for theseinourfirstterm.

We will also begin work on a longer-term programme to repeal and replace the RMA.

CASH FOR COMMUNITIES

Every spring since 2011, PGG Wrightson and Ballance Agri-Nutrients have partnered to bring the Cash for Communities programme to raise funds for schools, clubs, charities, and community organisations that provide valuable resources and support to rural communities. To date, $700,000 has been donated across the country.

In spring 2022, over 850 farmers and horticultural growers chose over 170 organisations to donate to, including schools, rescue helicopters, St John New Zealand, and the Rural Support Trust. Fire brigades feature too, and locally, the Kirwee Fire Brigade received a donation of $1,102, which was presented to Chief Fire Officer, Stuart Jones.

“While Fire and Emergency New Zealand supply us with the equipment and appliances we need, any extras require fundraising,” says Stuart.

“This year’s Cash for Communities donation goes towards buying materials to

build a security fence around the back of the station. This will house the cars we use for practising cutouts as part of our ongoing training.”

With the Cash for Communities programme running from 1st September through to 30th November 2023, you’ll soon be able to nominate a local cause close to your heart. When purchasing Ballance Agri

-Nutrients fertiliser through your PGG Wrightson account, $1 for every tonne of fertiliser purchased will be donated to a qualifying cause of the customer’s choice.

New, this spring, is the opportunity to nominate a qualifying cause by buying selected agrichemical products with every 10 litres purchased, $1 will be donated.

Nominating is easy, as an account holder simply visit your local Nominating easy, as an account simply visit your local PGG Wrightson store, and the team will help you or go online to PGG Wrightson the team will go to cashforcommunities.co.nz/nominate.
