A Givealittle page set up for Rolleston resident Olivia Oughton by one of her close friends highlights a tragic car accident in Twizel on the early hours of Sunday, July 30 resulting in Olivia being unresponsive and on a ventilator in the Christchurch hospital fighting for her life.

Olivia sustained trauma to her brain, with some small bleeds on the brain, a fractured neck, and some internal bleeding in the abdomen.

The accident came after Olivia's dad, Dave, had just finished chemo and radiation treatment for cancer.

On the Givealittle page, over a week ago, Olivia’s mother, Suzanne, says, “Olivia was moved from ICU up to the Neuro Ward. This is where she began her rehabilitation journey. She has a massive team of nurses and doctors dedicated to brain injury recovery and is in the best hands”.

For the family this was a big change with more restrictions on visiting hours as Olivia’s daily routine became busy and exhausting. Each stage of Olivia’s recovery journey is in small steps and is an emotional time for Suzanne and Dave.

The good news is that her spinal cord is intact and they can see Olivia make improvements with each visit.

Suzanne says they understand

021 147 7059

that people are eager to visit, but the ward is strict regarding the number of visitors.

Suzanne and Dave along with Andrew, James, and Emily wish to convey their thanks for so much support, love, and prayers. “It’s truly appreciated by us all.”

Stacey Dalley, a family friend, says, “We all know how much of a fighter Olivia is, she is a strong-willed young lady with too much to live for, so we are holding out all hope that this zest for life will be what brings her back to us and fight to survive’.

If you would like to donate to Olivia’s Givealittle page, where the funds raised will be used to support Olivia with rehabilitation in a care unit at Dunedin as well as accommodation and travel costs for the family and a vehicle to transport her if required visit: givealittle.co.nz/cause/support -for-our-shining-star-olivia

HEART TO HEART FUNDRAISING

When the call came to support Rolleston local Olivia Oughton after an accident left her in hospital in critical condition, Selwyn people came to the rescue, not just those who knew her and her family but also strangers. They came forward wearing their hearts

on their sleeves and money or services to donate.

Last Friday the community supported Olivia’s fundraising Golf Tournament and the family were overwhelmed with all the love and support from everyone - it was a very emotional day for all.

The Oughton family being long

time Rock and Rolleston locals drew strength from The Rock in Rolleston, when the business announced they would run a Quiz Night on September 5 to raise much needed funds for Olivia and her family.

SLOWER SPEEDS SAVE LIVES

Many factors cause road crashes, but the impact speed during a collision is the primary factor determining your survival. It’s that simple.

Over the last five years, 100% of all fatalities in Selwyn occurred on roads with speed limits over 70km/hr. This doesn’t mean that these crashes were caused by exceeding the speed limit, but in many cases, the speed at the point of impact was too great for the occupants to survive the crash.

We often hear that our roads are unsafe for our children to get themselves to and from schools, but what speed do you drive past children? Remember they are speed limits, not speed targets. Roads are easier to cross if traffic is slower. The Council can build raised platforms, adjust speed limits, and educate, and the New Zealand Police can enforce,

but ultimately for speeds to be reduced and made safe on our roads, you (as the driver) need to lift your right foot a fraction.

Over the coming weeks, you will see information around the role speed plays in the road toll in Selwyn and how you can make a difference on our roads.

Please take the time to learn how driving a little slower can make a significant difference to everyone’s chances of survival.

The Selwyn District Speed Management Plan will be out for public consultation in October, and we encourage everyone to review it and provide feedback. Treat other road users like family and we all might stand a better chance of survival.

Plan Ahead, Stay Alert, Slow Down, Drop Back.

Selwyn District Council.

HELP A SHINING STAR

...continued from front page. A spokesperson for The Rock says, “They are facing the most challenging period of their lives and we, along with all their family and friends, are gathering to raise funds to support them through this.”

“This quiz, which is already booked out, will be a fun way to raise money to help. The raffle and auction items along with quiz prizes that her family and friends have gathered from other local businesses keen to help the Oughtons’ are amazing!”

The Rock will donate 20% of all money spent on food and beverages on the night, along

with the money raised from quiz entries, raffles, and auctions. “This will really help this awesome local family in the fight of their lives.”

Richard from Rural Property Solutions, Methven, doesn’t even know the family but wants to help. He personally believes in the concept of ‘paying it forward’ after experiencing life’s ups and downs.

Richard has offered to donate 50% from his $80 heat pump servicing profits for the month of August to help support the Oughton family of Rolleston.

He’s been overwhelmed with the response and working seven days a week to keep up

with the demand. He says, “when I set this business up we decided to keep our prices low so we could help and offer our services to as many people as we can. For those of you who know me and my family we have had our fair share of ups and downs. Over the years we have had help from a lot of people. We always do our best to pay it forward. We are paying it forward to a Rolleston family who are going through the biggest fight of their life.”

DAFFODIL DAY FUNDRAISER

This coming Friday and Saturday, August 25-26, is the annual Cancer Society’s Fundraiser for The Malvern Cancer Support Group and the many street volunteers giving their time to collect out in the community and townships. One in three people will receive a cancer diagnosis at some stage in their lives, so almost everyone has a family member or friend affected. Daffodil Day is a chance for you to show your support for those going through cancer and help the Cancer Society ensure no one must go through cancer alone.

The Malvern Cancer Support Group has also once again initiated this year their “Paint the Town Yellow” for businesses to help promote Daffodil Day by dressing up a window or having a display in their store. Thank you to the businesses who have participated and made a great effort. Judges are out and about and once the winner is announced, they will hold the trophy for the next 12 months. As the Cancer Society has gone away from plastic daffodils to environmentfriendly paper daffodils for their collection this year, there was an excess supply of plastic daffodils. The local schools were given the challenge to make good use of these in the hope that this would also help the kids understand and promote the Daffodil Day Fundraiser for the Cancer Society. The winner will also be announced for the

Best School Entry. Thanks again to those who have participated - some great entries are coming through.

Other events happening are the Property Brokers sausage sizzle outside their office on Friday, August 25, and on Saturday, August 26, Springfield will host their annual Fun Run/Walk, 6km and 2km around the township. The start time is 10am from Donut Park in Springfield, come dressed in your ‘best yellow’ to be in to win a spot

prize. Family and friends, including your furry friends (on a lead), are all welcome to join in with donations going to the Daffodil Day Fundraiser. The Malvern Cancer Support Group looks forward to another successful fundraiser this year! Thank you, in advance, to everyone supporting this great cause - it is much appreciated.

Ainsley Burton, Secretary, Malvern Cancer Support Group.

Do you know we are here to help?

If you or someone in your family has been diagnosed with cancer you are welcome to contact us. We have a variety of support options available for your needs.

COAL TROLLEY MISSING

One of Glentunnel’s iconic coal trolleys went missing last weekend from the southern end of the township. Locals were horrified to discover that the locally made replica trolley had been removed from its platform.

Glentunnel Residents Committee chairperson Glenn Chambers says that it likely went missing over the weekend. The metal braces holding the trolley in place had been cut and he says the trolley would have been quite heavy with its metal cast wheels and axles and would need several people to move it. He was concerned that the trolley may have been removed for private use in a garden or be

dismantled for scrap metal. The coal trolley is one of three on display in the township, referencing the town’s historic

link to the early coal mines in the area, and had been in place for the last ten years.

COMMUNITY CAMERAS NEEDED

Glentunnel’s brazen theft of a heavily constructed coal trolley highlights the need to monitor what is happening in country townships. Small communities are vulnerable and want to make sure they can keep their townships safe and track down people who visit with intent to steal or vandalise private and public property.

The Community Patrol network is currently pushing for communities to install automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras, which take photos of number plates of vehicles coming and going. The cameras are positioned in a way that provides the camera enough time to read and process the number plates. ANPR cameras only record vehicle registrations; police can officially view the images and do so only when an incident has occurred and been reported.

Glentunnel Residents Committee chairperson Glenn Chambers says the residents’ committees, Coalgate and

Glentunnel, are each currently fundraising the costs to install cameras at the entrances to both townships. Each camera costs around $3000 and the

money must be fundraised independently through various activities as there is currently no funding available from the local council.

FUNICULAR TRAM

New

is open for the 2023 Broken River ski season. Built in 1985, the unique funicular ski tram had been out of action for nearly four years. Ski enthusiasts can now enjoy a spectacular start to their day with a four-minute ride from the car park up through native beech forest to the ticket office. The Tramway is simple to use with just two buttons - one for up and one for down - and saves a 30-minute hike with gear up to the ski field. It is fully certified to carry passengers and runs daily from 8:30am-10:30am and 3:30pm-5:30pm, during the winter.

ARTWORK FOSTERS COMMUNITY

This year’s Darfield Artweek 2023 is on Friday 6 to Sunday 15, October 2023 with the grand opening on Friday evening. The exhibition is open to the public daily from 10am to 4pm at the Darfield Recreation Centre and at Te Huanui Art Gallery in Darfield. Artweek is an annual community open exhibition, and this year is its 42nd exhibition. Planning is already underway for the Malvern Community Arts Council Artweek committee of volunteers. Each year more than fifty volunteers are involved, and new volunteers are always welcome.

Darfield Artweek 2023 offers artists throughout the district and beyond the opportunity to exhibit, the public to view a wide range of artworks and, for the local community, an event that attracts visitors to the area. Artweek encourages the creative efforts of artists who work in all mediums with entries from painters, photographers, potters, glass workers, jewellery makers, metal workers, woodworkers, textile artists and much more.

There are adult and youth categories and each year Artweek invites a different independent, qualified judge to award the prizes. Opening night expects to attract around two hundred invited guests, sponsors, supporters, and artists and include awards of locally sponsored prizes for artists. Art supporters and local businesses support Artweek each year with awards valued at approximately $6000 worth of prizes.

In 2022, the event received

entries from 160 artists and displayed a record 375 artworks. The exhibition consistently attracts highquality artwork. The new Youth section, including prizes, is allowing our younger artists to enter the exhibition. This year, there will be two age categories – 10 to 14 and 15 to 18.

Darfield Artweek 2023 remains open to the community for ten days of viewing, attracting approximately 1200 visitors

from around the region. Entry to the exhibition is free to all and all artworks are for sale. The event provides an opportunity for the public to appreciate a range of art in an easily accessible and relaxed environment. Parents and children are welcome, and visitors are encouraged to participate in voting for their favourite artwork for the People’s Choice Award.

NEW PUBLIC ART

SCAPE Public Art, combined with Selwyn District Council and the Rolleston Residents’ Association, is proud to announce a new permanent public artwork to become an iconic landmark of the Rolleston Town Centre. The work will be in Rolleston Town Centre’s newly developed reserve, surrounded by the

community enrichment of Te

Ara Ātea, a sensory garden, and youth recreation space. Arts laureate Dr Areta Wilkinson’s distinctive and meaningful new artwork, Toro Atua, takes inspiration from ancestral rock art of Te Waipounamu. The work will take the form of 20 light-reflecting stainless-steel

figures, mounted on tall, slender poles to vibrate with life, shimmering slightly in the air far above our heads. The tallest of these will be four metres high and the 20 figures will be arranged in groups throughout the reserve, leading people through the landscape and indicating areas of importance.

CHURCH HIGH TEA FUNDRAISER

Hope West Melton Church is raising funds to support their new facility with a high tea in October. The Presbyterian church has had a presence west of Christchurch for 150 yearsthe original Halkett congregation formed in 1873. Those pioneering men and women had the vision to serve the local farming families and build a church for the future, starting congregations in both Hornby and on the corner in West Melton.

The growth of the West Melton township following the earthquakes meant that the church also began to grow as families moved out west to build and settle into the semi-rural community. As a result of this, the church building was overflowing as the number of people attending meant the church building could no longer cope and needed to be expanded. With support from Hornby, Halkett and Rolleston congregations, the West Melton firewood mission, and a large garage sale, funds were raised to extend the existing building. The vision included doubling the seating in the auditorium space

and including a separate youth space to cater for the growing number of children and young adults in the community. In 2021, the building was completed. However, due to Covid, no further fundraising events could happen to raise funds for this new facility. Now the church is back raising funds for this amazing building with the support of the community and individual businesses, with the main sponsors Conveen, Vargo Mentoring, BackCountry Coffee, Darfield Automotive and Paradigm.

The outreach programmes provided in the new building are an extension of what we do on a Sunday at church. During the week the church offers Mainly Music for young families. There is a strong youth ministry, which builds connections with teens and teaches elements of serving in the community. Support is given to local families and the West Melton School. The building provides a space for local organisations to hire. Also, different groups within the church offer professional development opportunities for locals and community groups.

The annual Carols on Kirrin event in December also draws the community together at the local park for Christmas celebrations.

High Tea - Saturday 7th Oct, 11.30am and 2pm at Hope West Melton Church. Buy a table for two or four. Tickets available at: hopechurch.net.nz/high-tea/. Limited spaces so get in quick.

With cold chilly days leading into spring, it’s still good practice to make sure you dispose of your hot ashes safely, so they don’t become a fire hazard. Ashes can stay hot long after a fire has gone out and they can and do start fires in household rubbish bins. Hot ashes have also started fires in rubbish trucks and transfer stations.

Always remember – bucket, bag it and bin it.

Using a small metal shovel, scoop ash from your fireplace into a metal bucket with a lid.

It's important that you only use a metal bucket or container and not something that could easily catch fire from any residual heat left in the ashes such as plastic or cardboard. Take the bucket outside, away from any buildings, and douse with water. Leave to cool for at least five days.

Once the ash has been safely cooled you can use it sparingly in your garden by spreading thinly over your lawn or stirring thoroughly into your home compost pile or empty the cold

ash into a rubbish bag and place it into your rubbish bin. Do not place ash into your recycling or organics bin.

PROPOSED DISTRICT PLAN

Selwyn’s proposed new rulebook has taken a major step closer to being adopted with the notification of decisions from the hearings of public submissions.

Over the past two years the Council has heard and considered public submissions on the Proposed District Plan and the decisions on submissions and further submissions were notified on August 19.

The decisions cover changes to reflect new legislation, national policy direction, and issues raised through submissions. It creates new urban zones, strengthens protection of highly productive land, protection of properties from natural hazards, protection of historic and culture heritage, important landscapes, as well as updating rules for what activities can occur where.

The appeal period is now open for 30 working days for submitters to appeal decisions on the Proposed District Plan if they wish to.

In addition, the Council also notified decisions on Variation 1 to the Proposed District Plan and various Private Plan Changes, as required by central government legislation. The legislation requires Council to provide for medium density housing in Rolleston, Lincoln and Prebbleton. These rules are now operative, with no right of appeal.

The Hearings Panel considered 605 submissions, covering around 9,300 individual submission points. Notification of decisions by

the Council is major milestone for the new plan.

Council Acting Chief Executive Tim Harris says, “A huge amount of work has gone into getting us to this point. The District Plan is very important document for setting up the district for the future - helping keep Selwyn a great place to live. We’re grateful to the Hearings Panel and the submitters for helping us with getting this right and we are looking forward to the final stage of getting the new plan into place.”

The next step in the District Plan Review process will be to receive and resolve any appeals on the Proposed District Plan. Parts of the Proposed Plan that are not subject to appeals now become operative.

The Proposed District Plan will be fully operative after all appeals have been resolved.

The decisions on submissions and further submissions, and further information on the can be viewed online at www.selwyn.govt.nz/ districtplanreview.

Decisions include:

• Greater protection of highly productive land in line with the National Policy Statement on Highly Productive Land and submissions.

• Introducing new zones to provide for a range of business services and employment opportunities.

• Rezoning 2,532ha of existing urban zoned

(residential, commercial or industrial) land to a new urban zoning category. This includes 1,922ha of residential intensification to Medium Density Residential Zoning. And rezoning 1,371ha of rural zoned land to urban and special purpose zones. The rezoning has come from submissions accepted by Council, updating areas where consents had been granted but the zoning hadn’t been changed and to comply with national legislation to increase housing supply.

• Further protections from wildfire and flood hazards, including new setbacks around rural properties to reduce wildfire risk and new flood assessment certificates for new buildings to specify minimum building floor height requirements.

• Areas of significant natural biodiversity are identified and protected where they meet specified criteria.

MALVERN NETBALL SUCCESS NETBALL PRIZEGIVING

The Malvern Netball season started at the end of March with the Senior Midweek Competition, with only four teams competing. The overall winner was Kirwee Seniors, who also took the honours of winning the Searle Family Challenge Shield. The Social and Year 7/8 Grades were played on Saturdays, along with the Year 5/6 Future Ferns. Springfield/Sheffield Cowgirls won the Social grade with Kirwee Krazies taking the honours in the Year 7/8 Grade.

WESTY WEKAS

FIRST ALL-BOY NETBALL TEAM

The West Melton Westy Wekas are a bunch of great mates with some of them being friends since they were twoyear-olds at preschool. They love to hang out whether it’s at school, on the rugby field, motorbike track, skatepark or the netball court.

Five out of the seven of the boys are playing netball for the first year. Coach Hannah Helm says, “The boys have all loved their time on the court and have improved immensely, learning lots of skills, which will help them in other sports going forward”.

The junior program played on a weekday at the Selwyn netball centre is a great pathway to learning the game. Each week they learn a key skill with two to three drills to help master this skill and finish with a five aside game against another team. At the end of the season there was a fun day tournament held in Lincoln, with multiple clubs involved.

“The Westy Wekas had a blast and were challenged to some

very tough games, which pushed them to utilise all their skills they had learnt throughout the season,” says Hannah. “With no scores kept, netball won on the day followed by some hot chips and a fizzy at the Famous Grouse. The boys are very excited for next year’s season.”

Playing a variety of sports is hugely beneficial, and netball

is the ultimate team sport, due to the fact players must pass the ball to score. “It teaches young kids, girls or boys, some great teamwork skills.

The Wekas hope they have inspired lots of other Selwyn boys to give netball a go next season and who knows there might even be a boy’s league someday soon.”

Years 1/2 and 3/4 were held on a Monday afternoon in Term 2. President, Vanessa Moore says, “The Centre couldn’t run without all the people that volunteer their time and for that, I am extremely grateful. A big thanks also, to all the committee members of the Centre and Clubs who help make the season run smoothly. Melissa Jebson was awarded the Betsy Little Service Award for her time and dedication and Victoria Leech was awarded the Terina Graham Future Ferns Trophy for her effort with the Junior Netball Programme on both Monday afternoons and Saturdays. Victoria spends hours planning and presenting the Programme and ensuring it all runs according to plan.” The season has also finished for the Malvern A, B and

Malvern Masters A & B teams that play in the Selwyn Netball Competition. Malvern A won the Premier 2 Grade in the first round and were promoted to Premier 1. Malvern B won their grade and Masters A & B both had an enjoyable season.

BLAZER GAME HONOR

Danzfit student Tessa Dalley recently competed in the New Zealand Dance Awards National Finals in early July this year. The talented young dancer came away with some amazing results in some very tough classes - third in Musical Theatre with Gumboots choregraphed by Leisa Yaxley, sixth in Contemporary with a gold award, a gold award in Jazz, and a silver award in Lyrical - all these dances were choreographed by Natasha Boon.

Tessa has also qualified, along with Issy Limbe, Helana Macdonald, Ruby Peacock, and Bella Yaxley, to compete at Showcase Australia, National Finals in Australia in January 2024. Showcase is the largest dance competition in Australia and has become the number one platform for dancers to compete for the nation's top titles.

Danzfit owner Leisa Yaxley says, “It is an amazing opportunity for them to compete at an event such as this - especially when you come from a little dance school in Springfield! They have some busy months ahead as they continue to train up to eight hours per week and fundraise to get to Australia. Coming up on October 28, they are

planning a fundraising night so keep an eye out for this fun upcoming event”.

The Christchurch Competitions Society event was also a busy week for the school’s team of dancers. “This is a fabulous competition that the girls always enjoy competing at. They all achieved fantastic results!”

With Danzfit’s small team competing in the open (any age) team classes, Leisa says they were pleased with placings of third in Jazz, third in Contemporary and fourth in Lyrical against teams that were much older and larger.

“They are such a supportive

After playing 12 representative games for Ellesmere Seniors Rugby, Haigh Jebson was presented a blazer by Ellesmere Referee and Ellesmere Rugby Board member Ross Amyes. Haigh has played for the senior team for the last four years, receiving the club tie after his first game. He says, “It is an honour to play for Ellesmere and the ‘blazer game’ was made better played at my hometown in Darfield”. Unfortunately for Haigh, he had to come off the field with a dislocated ankle, however the team had a good win against Canterbury Waitaha, 19 – 12.

The August meeting was held at the Recreation Centre on Tuesday, August 15.

Beautifully handmade cards of thanks were received from the Darfield Primary School after a recent donation was presented to them. The school plans to purchase seedlings and an irrigation system for their school garden, which is part of their garden to plate programme.

Cynthia Bishell won the most points in the flower section and new programmes for the year were available with an interesting selection of visits, visiting speakers, and flower shows.

Chris Smith was our invited guest and is the plant centre manager for Southern Woods. He has worked at Clifton Gardens in London and various garden places in New Zealand. He brought along a variety of plants and shrubs, and with his wealth of knowledge explained their place in home gardens. His power point of trees was a highlight. He impressed on us the need for good tools to always be clean and sharpened. The meeting concluded with afternoon tea and a time to view the flowers on display.

The September meeting will be in the Recreation Centre on September 19 at 1.30pm and is a popular one being the Spring Flower Show. New members always welcome.
