Mount Olympus recently hosted Tarnspiel, a social curling tournament that originally became part of the Mt Olympus event calendar in the 2011 Rugby World Cup Real New Zealand tournament. At 1800m above sea level, the tournament is known as the highest curling tournament in New Zealand.

Windwhistle Winter Sports Club president Simon Driscoll says, “Tarnspiel is a fun event where everyone can have a go. It is a testament to our ski club’s spirit with members pitching in from clearing the snow from the ice, organising catering, promotion, getting everything to the tarn and then taking part.”

The Tarn, where the curling takes place, is at the top of the field Main Tow, which means it can normally only be accessed by skis or snowboard. However, this year a helicopter was arranged to fly those who could not ski to the tarn.

“It was really special to be able to fly people in to be part of this event. Many of the people who flew are members

who can no longer ski, they have been part of shaping the field and our club, so it was fabulous to have them up there, sharing and making memories. The helicopter does add more logistics to the day, like the need to fly a port-a-loo to the tarn and deliver 60 hamburgers and a

pot of soup from the Top Hut kitchen to feed people. But everyone helps and it's part of the day.”

Simon says, “Over 20 teams took part in Tarnspiel with lots of friendly competition, right

up until the final when the chance of winning calls for a more serious approach! The champions on the day were the Tie-rifics, an all-female group of Club Members, they took on The Staff in the final.”

MUMS AND BUBS GROUP

A need born out of Covid restrictions saw two mums start a group to help support other parents in 2021. Kate O’Connell and Maria McFarlane both had babies that year and due to the restrictions, with no Plunket coffee groups able to be held, they found it hard to meet and connect with other mums in the area.

“We were both lucky to have started our babies at Darfield Playcentre at the age of four months,” says Kate, “but we still wanted connection with other new mums in the area so decided to start a Facebook page named Darfield Babies 2020/2021.” This page was

recently renamed to Malvern Babies 2020/2021 and currently has 58 members. Being a new parent can be a very lonely and challenging time and it’s a big step to put yourself out there to meet new people alongside trying to juggle a newborn at the same time. Kate says it feels like starting your first day of high school all over again when you are wanting to meet other new parents.

The group offers opportunities to meet up and new friendships formed not just between the parents but also between the babies (now toddlers). Organising

meetups, playgroups or even just letting others know they may be attending a community outing such as Rhyme Time at the library are just some of the ways members can connect with each other.

After the success of the first group, Kate and Maria felt they should start the next group, Malvern Babies 2022, with 52 members, and most recently Malvern Babies 2023, which gained 38 members in just one week!

Kate says, “Whether it’s your first or your fifth child, it’s so important to know you are not alone, you won’t be judged and that so many others are going through the same journey as you are! The groups can be used for any sort of communication from asking for advice, organising catchups, or celebrating a win for the week! For those that aren’t social media, people can also meet at the Darfield Toy Library which runs out of the Plunket rooms on the corner of Jackson and North Terrace, open every second Saturday from 9-11am.”

JANE AUSTIN COMING TO DARFIELD

Addicted to Darcy?

Lost all Sense and Sensibility? Bonkers for Big Balls?

Well put down your crossstitching and join Penny Ashton, Lori Dungey and Jamie Burgess, as they swoon, romp, and pianoforte their way through an entirely improvised Austenian Musical. Charming suitors, meddlesome mothers, tight breeches, and

surprisingly well-educated girls will all paint a vivid picture in song, dance, and passionate hand holding.

Austen Found: The Undiscovered Musicals of Jane Austen is here for one night only on Thursday, September 7 at the Darfield Rec Centre. The play was a complete sellout in the Comedy Festival (2007 and 2021) and Adelaide Fringe (2010) and promises to be a hit throughout New Zealand.

For her fifth Arts on Tour NZ, Penny Ashton (Olive Copperbottom, Promise and Promiscuity, Sense and Sensibility – The Court Theatre, Hot Pink Bits) is bringing along her most accomplished improvising friend Lori Dungey (M3GAN, Lord of the Rings, Xena) and her most melodical musical maestro, Jamie Burgess (Canterbury Opera, K Rd Strip, Basil Fawlty) to perambulate the NZ countryside spreading laughter and delightful bonnets as they go. An entirely improvised Austenian Musical. Penny Ashton is New Zealand’s own global comedienne who has been making a splash on

the world stage since 2002. She has performed over 1000 solo shows and has sold out from Edinburgh to Edmonton to Tokoroa.

Lori Dungey has been an actor for over 40 years and is currently the Education Director for the Theatresports Youth Program, Auckland (TYP), which runs in 21 High School/ Colleges.

Born, raised, and trained in New Zealand, Jamie Burgess now calls Melbourne home. Passionate about all aspects of performing and creating theatre, he has dipped his fingers into pretty much all the pies since graduating from NASDA a couple of decades ago.

This production is being brought to Darfield by the Malvern Community Arts Council – Performing Arts Committee.

Tickets are available from Te Huanui Art Gallery in Darfield, and on the night at Darfield Recreation Centre.

Adults $25 and children $10 (Rec suitable for children over 14).

COUNTRY POLO COMING BACK

If the inaugural Sheffield Country Polo event last year was such a success that another event is planned for later this year on Saturday, November 11.

Co-organiser Dan van der Salm says, “We received such humbling support from the local community and from the polo players, who all loved their involvement and agreed they will be back again this year.”

This year the event is listed in the official calendar and is now recognised by the Canterbury and national polo associations, which means organisational support and no other events scheduled the same weekend.

Four polo teams will start the afternoon with a grand parade and will compete for the coveted Sheffield Country Polo Plate. A master of ceremonies will commentate throughout the day to explain the rules and ensure everybody enjoys the event.

There will be plenty of entertainment with traditional stomping of the divots, best dressed, best car park set up, best corporate tent site, school auction, corporate sulky races, and possibly a guest appearance by Taylor Clelland. The Lee Martin Band will play from 5.30pm until

8.30pm, and the local Fire Brigade will once again offer its services for taxi rides home.

“Bring your own food, your own refreshments and a good attitude and we will provide all the entertainment for an exciting fun-filled afternoon,” says Dan.

“Advanced tickets, released for last year’s ticket holders, have already been snapped up but the remainder are now on sale to the wider community, so get in quick! You don’t

want to be the guys that missed out two years running! We want to keep it an intimate and local feel, so tickets are limited.”

Tickets range from corporate tents (Platinum 150, Gold 100, Silver 50, bronze 26), car parks (five people) and general admission.

For more information visit the Facebook page or email: sheffieldpolo@gmail.com. Book your tickets at: events.humanitix.com/sheffieldcountry-polo-2023.

JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

In July this year, Ryan Booth (17) attended a 10-day trip to Changwon, South Korea to participate in the 2023 Shooting Junior World Championship, representing New Zealand (NZ) in the 50m Mens Prone Target Shooting event. Ryan was one of two under-21-year-old juniors representing NZ, with Shania Harrison-Lee also competing. Ryan and Shania were among over 500 competitors over a range of different shooting disciplines, such as shotgun and indoor air rifle events. This was Ryan’s first time travelling overseas to represent NZ on the world stage and was an opportunity to study other competitors and their equipment and compete against the world’s best under high pressure conditions.

The local 50m shooting range at McLeans Island, one of the largest outdoor shooting ranges in NZ, was built for the 1974 Commonwealth Games and currently has a 30mound capacity, which means the range can have up to 30 people shooting at a time. In South Korea, Ryan was shooting on an 80-mound

range, located on top of a 3-storey building. This introduced some interesting conditions, such as swirling winds to take into account.

One of the biggest challenges with shooting in South Korea was the heat and high humidity. During the ten days there, the temperature averaged around 28 degrees, with a humidity above 80%.

After training in cold winter conditions leading up to the competition, wearing thick shooting jackets meant the body quickly got very hot. At the end of the challenging match, Ryan was placed 40th with a score of 602.6, which was close to the expected score considering the conditions. The winning score of 625.0 for the match was exceptional.

Ryan returned with some new equipment and plenty of new ideas and advice to continue improving his skills and scores. Being able to compete at such a prestigious event was a privilege and provided an invaluable experience to fuel his desire to improve. His sights are now set on the Oceania event held in Brisbane

in November.

Ryan says he enjoyed his time in South Korea. “It wouldn’t have been possible without all the support I got from you all, including my number one supporters - my parents John and Rhonda Booth.” He also thanks Malvern Lions and Sport Canterbury for their help with funding the trip, and the support and donations from local clubs, friends and ‘local shooting family’.

LATE DOG REGISTRATION If you haven’t got your favourite pooch’s registration completed yet, the Council is encouraging you to get it done as soon as possible to avoid infringements. All dogs aged three months and over in the district must be registered with the Council every year, with the annual dog registration month taking place in July. Those who paid before 1 August were eligible for a discounted fee of $45, but anyone who didn’t register on time must now pay the regular $60 fee for their dog.

NATIONAL GARDENING WEEK runs for the week of October 16-23 this year and aims to foster a love of gardening with a focus on growing not only plants but friendships, good health, strong communi es, and closer connec ons with nature. Whether it’s a few pots on the balcony, a small patch or an extensive garden, everyone can experience the joy of gardening.

A BELGIAN BEAU FOR BASUKI

Orana Wildlife Park is excited to announce that a 9-year-old male siamang gibbon called Suka has arrived from Pairi Daiza Zoo in Belgium. After Suka completed quarantine, she was introduced to 10-year -old female, Basuki, who was very excited to be with her Belgian beau!

When Suka transferred to Aotearoa, it was a joint recommendation from species co-ordinators at both the Zoo Aquarium Association Australasia and the European Association of Zoos. Both

siamangs Suka and Basuki have a very similar playful nature and ever since they were introduced, they always spend a lot of time together. Siamangs have a feature that is quite distinguishing, it is a large throat sac that they use to make socially important vocalisations or songs. Suka and Basuki have been singing together.

The zoo team is hopeful that in the future they will produce baby siamangs. Basuki was the last siamang born at Orana Park in 2013.

THE CHIP PACKET PROJECT

The Chip Packet Project New Zealand is a charity that recycles used foil chip packets to make thermal survival blankets for people living on the street, living in cars or garages. The Project helps the environment, helps those in need and brings people together to collect and make the blankets.

Over 302 blankets have been created and distributed throughout New Zealand since 2022, however many more are needed as well as volunteers to provide collection points and organise foil fusion groups. It’s easy to help by collecting, washing, and saving your potato chip packets. Packets

should be cut along the long side and across the sealed end to open out, then washed in warm soapy water and dried with a towel. Store folded until you have enough packets to donate, it takes 55 packets to make one blanket. Other packets can also be saved such as the foil packets that some biscuits come in

CRAFT DAY SUCCESS

A day of weaving and crafts at the St Joseph Church Hall attracted 25 enthusiastic people including children. Several weavers brought along their looms, some from Ashburton, while others watched and chatted or had a go at weaving on some smaller

looms. Organiser Simone Hindun says, “We had a lovely day weaving sharing tips, ideas, and some delicious food. Weaving is often a somewhat solitary hobby as larger looms are heavy, so it’s always a treat to weave in a group.”

THE EVOLUTIONARY PHENOMENON THAT IS NEW ZEALAND

Malvern U3A’s August meeting welcomed Terry Thomson. Terry is a natural history communicator based in Christchurch and a freelance nature guide. He has written the book, ‘The Loney Island; The Evolutionary Phenomenon that is New Zealand’.

The title of his talk was, “A closer look at New Zealand’s deep endemics”. Acceptance in the 1960’s that continents move horizontally across the face of the earth became central to the history of Zealandia. The splitting of Gondwanaland and the influence of the Pacific Islands resulted in the uniqueness of New Zealand’s endemic species, which are found nowhere else on earth. Their history can be traced through this geographical understanding and in more recent times the use of DNA. With the bat being the only mammal, species developed without predators and birds

such as the kiwi became flightless. Widespread reptile groups in Australia such as snakes and turtles are absent, only geckos and skinks are present. The tuatara is the only living reptile in a biological order that is otherwise occupied only by long extinct and fossilised reptiles. The rare New Zealand native frog is only resembled by frogs in faraway western Noth America. Weta, snails, dragonflies, freshwater crayfish, and mussels are unique to New Zealand. DNA helped to develop ancestorial charts, which showed the development of New Zealand species was different to what was previously thought. The talk was well illustrated with photos of New Zealand’s endemics back through time.

U3A is looking forward to a mini -series in September entitled, “Malvern – A Districts Journey from Early settlement to the Present Day”. This covers farming business and social

development. Brain health and dementia will be discussed at our next meeting when we are fortunate to have Dr Matthew Croucher speaking. U3A welcomes anyone who is interested in a range of topics to join us.

RESTORATION FUNDRAISER

Do you have photos or family stories about the former Malvern South School, now known as the Whitecliffs Community Hall? The South Malvern Community Trust would love to hear from you as they continue to restore the heritage listed 1883 building.

The Trust is running another Family Fun Quiz Night Fundraiser on August 25 to raise funds for the hall. This year, the funds will go towards replacing the antiquated electrical system with a modern, safer system that will meet new regulations.

Last year’s quiz night was successful and welcomed former pupils of South Malvern School, Whitecliffs local Helen McArthur and her brother John McArthur, and past teachers of Branston Intermediate.

With additional fundraising events and grants from Selwyn District Council and Fonterra, the Trust purchased new doors for the building earlier this year. A volunteer builder has completed the west side exterior and is finishing the restoration of two more sides of the building.

To find out more or to book a table of four or six people, phone Rosemary on 0210 768 234. BYO drinks, raffles, and light supper available.

REGISTRATIONS OF INTEREST

The recent Waddington 150th celebration highlighted interest in the old Waddington School located on the St Johns Youth Camp property on Waddington Road. People asked what were the plans for the building’s restoration, if any?

The old school, built in c1877, needs some love and attention plus a huge amount of cash to get it back into shape, so a small group of Waddington locals are getting together and calling for additional registrations of interest from other people in the area who are interested in being part of a focussed and dedicated fundraising team. Work that needs to be completed includes new roof, removal of asbestos, removal of exterior plaster, and demolition of the additional kitchen. The building is listed with the Selwyn District Council as an ‘Historic Place Category 2’. The resulting fundraising team will work with the St John’s Fundraising team. A member of St John’s will come and talk to the group and discuss what has already been done and

what needs to be done in the future. The organisation is keen support any fundraising efforts by the community.

If you have a passion for or family ties to the old Waddington School, would love to see it restored to its original form, and can help raise funds to get the project started, email: oldschoolfundraiser@sheffield-waddington.nz

NICOLA GRIGG - OPINION PIECE

I think it’s fair to say that over the past six years, we’ve all become increasingly irritated – if not, outright concerned –at the state of the roads around Canterbury and, indeed, the rest of the country.

Under Chris Luxon’s leadership, National has a vision for New Zealand to become one of the world’s leading small, advanced economies and our policies focussed on education, the economy, and lifting productivity are just the start of our plan to fulfil that vision. So too is our Transport for the Future plan, which will help drive prosperity and lift the standard of living for all New Zealanders. Across the country, we’re focussed on building roads and networks that will unlock land for housing growth, better Public Transport and rebuilding regions and resilience.

Our package of 13 Roads of National Significance will cost $24 billion over ten years and all our projects are properly costed and funded. The Government will fund about $14 billion, and we’ll use private capital to get some of the work done, as happens overseas, so taxpayers do not have to pick up the full tab.

Here in Selwyn we’ve committed to begin work investigating the RollestonAshburton four-lane corridor in our first term in government. At the same time, we will get on with building a second Ashburton River bridge. Depending on what is decided by the investigations, we will make decisions around investment in the corridor, and the sequencing of it. While we have previously committed to the immediate build of this road in both the 2017 and 2020 election campaigns, unfortunately, in 2023, we find ourselves in a very, very different economic environment than we were just three years ago. Since 2020, a combination of out-of-control government spending, the global pandemic and severe weather events in the upper North Island have had a gravely detrimental impact on government finances and, indeed, the New Zealand economy. National is acutely aware of the importance of this project to the South Island economy but, with a price tag of about $2 billion – and, with huge and urgent storm-related works required in other parts of the country – we have had to prioritise other

works in our first term in office. To be fair, Canterbury saw huge infrastructure investment after the earthquakes when, at that time, the National government chose to prioritise our region over others around the country to reboot our own economy. So, to get our ducks in a row, I have had our transport team visit the region several times to view the road and meet with stakeholders and we all agree the job needs to be done, we must reinvestigate the pricing and sequencing of the build in the most responsible way that we can. If we can form the next government, we are determined to be far more careful with taxpayer money than Labour has been to ensure the sustainable financing of world-class, future-proofed transport infrastructure. I see this road as a significantly important local issue, and I will continue to champion it on behalf of Selwyn residents.

Want to keep an eye on river levels and water flow in your area? You can, with text message services from Ecan and Selwyn District Council that also cover rainfall data and irrigation restrictions.

Selwyn District Council offers a free river flow service for residents living in the Selwyn River/Waikirikiri floodplain. To sign up, text SELWYN to 3730.

A text will be sent to everyone who registers to the service when the river flow reaches a certain level. When a text is received, users are advised to monitor the river flow on ecan.govt.nz/riverflow and take action as needed.

Ecan’s website says that river levels presented are provisional only, telemetered twice daily from remote monitoring stations and could misrepresent the immediate state of the river. In other words, be aware as river levels can change quickly. To find out about other rivers in Canterbury, visit www.ecan.govt.nz/your-region/your-environment/water/riverreport/. Note: there is a small cost for using the Ecan service.

DARFIELD GUN CLUB

Finally! Some good conditions for this month’s shoot with good light from behind and very little wind. Numbers were a bit low due to conflicting events, however still a good turnout. Not so good for the scores in the eye-opener with just two scores of 20/20, both in A grade with a 19 in B grade and a 16 leading C grade. Second up was the Continental Cup with the targets at differing heights as well as angles. Possible 25/25’s were recorded by “Mr Smooth “ Dave Folley, Paul Templeton, Brodie Mangels and Bevan Brown. A good group for the shoot-off. Lastly, another Continental match to be combined with the first to give a 50-target match for the meat prizes. Johnny Sharp scored the only possible to lift into the top group along with three 24’s to Dave, Brodie, and Bevan to give four shooters

on 49/50, Paul unfortunately on the outer after dropping two targets.

Some good shooting was shown by two junior shooters Anna Mangels who improved over the day after a 4/20 to start shot scores of 11/25 and 16/25 in the Continental. Luka Ruddenklau scored 19/25 and 16/25 to finish second in the C grade.

The meat trophy shoot-off with Brodie out on target 2, Dave taking third after missing target 6. Last to miss was Johnny as target 7 sorted out 1st and 2nd A grade with Bevan holding on to win.

The last shoot-off was between Emma Stuart and Rupert Wright for the minor placings in B grade. Five targets were required to separate the two with Rupert emerging the winner.

Next shoot Sunday 3rd September 12:30pm start. All welcome.
