NEW RESIDENTS GROUP
A large turnout of 48 residents attended a meeting held on July 27 in the Sheffield Community Hall to determine a new group to represent the Sheffield-Waddington area. This follows the recent dissolution of Sheffield Township Committees by Selwyn District Council. The meetingwasorganisedbylocal CouncillorLydiaGliddon LydiaGliddon LydiaGliddon LydiaGliddon.
Malvern Community Board representative Sean Ellis Sean Ellis Ellis Sean Ellis chaired the meeting; he outlined the three options available – an incorporated society, a formal and an informalresidents’group.
SeanstatedthattheCouncillors and Community Board wanted residents to form an association that would work for the greater good of the community, bringingittogether toenhancethearea.
By being recognised by the Council, the newly elected
group would have access to a 24k Selwyn-wide annual pool ofmoneyandtherighttoaska member of the community board or councillor to attend their meetings. He also explained that having a new group wouldn’t stop any member of the public from using Snap Send and Solve or approaching their councillor/ community board individually, however, running the issue throughanofficiallyrecognised association would carry more punch.
The options were put to the vote with no votes cast for an official association, 17 votes for a formal residents’ group and 29 for an informal group.
Aninformalgroupisonewhere a group of people meet regularly and is committed to its community, has appointed facilitators, and anyone in the community can attend the meetings.

KEEPING SAFE ON AN ICY ROAD
Winter is still here and along with chilly weather and earlier nights, challenging driving conditions are unfortunately part of the package. It is important to plan ahead, stay alert, slow down and drop back.

One of the main scenarios to prepare for if you are driving during the winter months is ice on the road. Ice can be particularly hazardous in sheltered areas of the road where it might not thaw during the day, or after a flurry of snow when it may be thicker. You may not even be able to seeitontheroad.
If it has been snowing where you live, along the route you are planning to drive, or your destinationandyoucan’tavoid

LIFESTYLE MARKET STILL STEADY
The Selwyn lifestyle market has been maintaining a steady pace in recent times, attracting significant interest from both locals and those from the North Island. However, one notable challenge is the scarcity of available properties, especially in the 4-20 hectare range. As more people seek to relocate closer to family or take advantage of new job opportunities, the demand for lifestyle properties in the region has increased. Additionally, the rise of remote work opportunities has prompted many buyers toexplorethepotentialfora change in lifestyle, driving the interest in unique and high-spec homes with attractiveamenities.
An intriguing trend in the Selwyn lifestyle market is the growing interest in architecturally designed
homes with exceptional features. Buyers are willing to invest in properties that offer not only comfortable livingspacesbutalsounique aesthetics that align with their preferences. Homes with amenities like pools, ponds, ancillary buildings such as sheds, and equestrian facilities are particularly sought after and considered highlights of any propertylisting.
Furthermore, the pandemicinducedshifttowardsremote work has had a significant impact on the property market. With an increasing numberofindividualsableto workfromhome, theconcept of living further away from major city centres has becomemoreappealing. This trend is especially evident among Auckland-based buyers, who not only seeka more serene lifestyle but also benefit from the
relatively affordable property pricesinSelwyncomparedto the expensive Auckland market.
Despite the heightened interest, the Selwyn lifestyle market has experienced a levelling off in prices after twoyearsofcontinuousyearon-yeargains.
This stabilization in prices provides a more balanced playing field for buyers and sellers. However, the shortage of available propertieshasgivenrisetoa more competitive landscape, resulting in longer sale processes with multiple conditional buyers vying for limitedopportunities. GROWING UP ON THE HUNTING SCENE
….Followingonfromlastweek.
Huntsman Dave Ferriman’s Dave Ferriman’s Dave Ferriman’s Dave Ferriman’s daughters grew up with huntingin theirblood.
Daughter Bindy BindyBindy Bindy says it was a family affair with her sisters, Maree MareeMaree and Ann AnnAnn Ann, riding the houndstogether.
“It was all we knew; winter time was hunting season. Mum usually drove around with us kids when we were younger or when we’d had enough of ridingourponies.”
Bindy remembers big days out and coming home in the dark to feed the horses and says, “We’ve made so many great friends. It was always fun at the end of the season; we would have lots of family friends come and stay for our closinghunts.”
Maree says that being born into the hunting scene, she didn’t know any different and while it was hard work, most of the time they had a lot of fun. As well as looking after their horses, there was also the job of raking out the hounds’ pens, cleaning the water containers, and feeding them afterthehunt.
A highlight of her time was being the ‘whipper in’ for her dad in her late teens for several years. She had a couple of great horses and hadsomegreat runs.
“I remember a particular run where the hounds were
running out of bounds towards the main road, and Dad said you had better keep up and go, so after jumping full gates and wire fences, we got the hounds back.” Maree adds, “I think Dad was pretty happy, not that he would say.”
Ann loves the hunting experience. She says she also tried to play netball for a couple of years but found it was just easier to get in the truck and go hunting with the rest of thefamily.
“Nothing still beats the thrill of jumping a large gorse fence – especially if you
aren’t exactly sure what is on thelandingside!”
Now all three daughters have children of their own, and all five grandchildren enjoy taking part in the hunt with their parents and grandfather, Dave.
“We are exceedingly lucky to be able to have three generations all out hunting,” says Bindy. Her son Archie ArchieArchie Archie (9) loves being with Grandad, especially helping with the hounds. “Most hunt mornings, he will be down with Dad loading the hounds ready for each hunt and helping kennel them at the end of a great day’s hunting. Heenjoysthehoundworkouts at thestart oftheseason.”
Celebrating Dave’s 50th-year milestone was a special opportunity for his family. All of Dave’s grandchildren, Archie ArchieArchie Archie, Amelia Amelia Amelia Amelia (5), Ava AvaAva Ava (9), Oscar Oscar (5) and Charlotte and Charlotte and and (6), took part in the guard of honour when he rode in and they all rode out as Dave was accompanied by bagpipes at theendof thehunt.

SAFETY A CONCERN FOR NATIONAL
Around 400 people from acrossthedistrictcametohear
Chris Luxon’s Chris Luxon’s Chris Chris vision for the future of New Zealand and National’s top priorities if we can form a government in October.
Selwyn was typically a rural electorate but now has the fastest growing economy, population, and diversity in New Zealand. Growth pressures are being felt across the district which is why I’ve worked hard over the past three years to advocate to the government for investment in critical areas like telecommunications, schools and roading infrastructure –unfortunate, with mixed results fromLabour.
Chris Luxon and the National party, however, is aware of the value and potential of the Selwyn district and the importance of providing supporttoourregion.
Many of the issues Selwyn faces are similar to those
impacting other regions across the country, namely, the costof-living crisis, law and order, our education system and healthcare. It is our absolute focus to repair and restore what once was a safe, cohesive, and prosperous New Zealand.
Safety has been a significant concern amongst people in the Selwyn district, with ramraids, burglary and theft on the increase. Crime rates have increased significantly since Labourtookofficein2018.

Our kids have had a troubling time attending school for the past five years. We believekiwi kids deserve a world class education so that they can havethefreedomstothrive. As seen with our teaching the

As everyone who attended the meeting will have heard, Christopher Luxon is clearly focused on these issues that impact Kiwi’s the most. His primary objective is to restore the economy so that we can provide amazing health and education services, and so families can feel safe in their communities.

The Malvern Game Hunters Club (MGHC) in conjunc&on with Alpine Builds and Hawkins River Spreading held their 30th annual hun&ng compe&&on last weekend.
Approximately 260 hunters, an increase from the last few years, bagged a good number of large, impressive animals for the weigh-in on Sunday at the Coalgate Tavern, which saw people from all over the South Island a7ending.
Weights were similar in the boar sec&on (same average weight as last year) compared to last year. The red stag weight was up by 16kg from previous but slightly down in the fallow stag. The top three Tahr all weighed more than last year’s winner and the chamois sec&on was also heavier.
The Douglas Scores were all increased this year with Tusks up from 7 6/8 to86/8 and Red Stags up to a whopping 3462/8 (last year was 2357/8).
The judge’s choice overall prize went to Sam Johnson, a keen young hunter and no doubt a future hun&ng and fishing guide, who weighed in an impressive chamois, also winning both the weight and Douglas Score sec&ons.
The pig carrying sec&on saw a great number of keen par&cipants over all sec&ons this year, which was fantas&c.
Ben Moore was awarded the Mark Ranui Memorial Trophy for the biggest boar weighed in by a MGHC member.
“The commi7ee would like to thank Steve and Ann Joy of Coalgate Tavern for their support,” says MGHC President Jarrad Simpson, “as well as all our sponsors who donated a ra@ of wonderful prizes, helping to make this one of the best hun&ng compe&&ons around. The weather for the weekend was brilliant and it was great to see a large number a7end and support the weigh-in and prizegiving. Planning will start soon for next year’s event, hope to see you there.”

MCB JULY MEETING
The Community Board’s monthly meeting held at Darfield Library on Monday, July 24 was, as always, a robust meeting trying to meet theneedsoftheMalvernWard.
With the presentation out of the way, the floor was open to the public. As with all meetings, the Board does ask that if you are going to ask it a question, to let them know in advance so they can have the correct member of the Council there to respond with the accurateanswers.
Questions came from the Darfield Residents Association (DRA) and were on chlorination, always a hot topic.
Questions were responded to, and the DRA will get a full writtenreply. The Board would like to reiterate that the Council did not decide to chlorinate the water, instead it was a requirement from the Government through the Water Services Act. The Council has therefore asked for an
exemption and set up Rakaia Huts as a test piece, putting forward an alternative to chlorination to see if Taumata Arowai (the Government’s regulator) accepts this alternative. This would open thewayformorecommunities to consider becoming chlorine free. Sounds great but the alternative does come
The next meeting is on Monday 28 August, 4:30pm Tawera Hall, Springfield.

His wife returned from the morning shopping expedition and called her husband into the room from the garden.
"Frederick," she said heavily, "When you came home last night you told me you had been to the Grand Hotel with Mr. Wilson. I just met Mrs. Wilson, and she said you were both at the Trocadero. Why did you lie to me like that?"
Hubby groaned. "When I came home last night I couldn't say 'Trocadero.'"
