The longest-serving Huntsman in New Zealand, Dave Ferriman, has been part of the Christchurch Hunt for fifty years.
Dave has been on the hunt field since he was five years old, starting on ponies and moving to hacks over time. Hunting is in his blood, his father was Hunt Master of what was known as the Ashburton Hunt Club back in the day.
At sixteen years of age he started with the Christchurch Hunt as a whipper-in for Ian Gliddon . He learned every aspect of hunting with hounds and their breeding management as well as horse training and schooling.
In the early 1970’s Dave also gained his Amateur Jockey Licence, competing in races and steeple chasing. He became Clerk of the Course at Riccarton and Addington Racecourses and makes sure race day runs smoothly for everyone involved.
In 1973 he was offered the job
as Huntsman and because the season runs from April to July it worked out well to continue on with the Clerk of the Couse position as well.
In the early days, in the hunting off-season Dave would be mustering for farmers he had connected with through the Hunt.
Nowadays the role is all year round, feeding, exercising and caring for the hounds and prior to the start of the season, getting the pack as well as five to six horses fit for their upcoming job.
Over his fifty years of service
Dave has only missed a few hunts. In that time he has worked alongside the Hunt Master of 26 years, Dave McConchie and Peter Tilson who is the whipper-in, all working well together to look after the hounds at each Hunt.
Dave enjoys supporting new and aspiring huntsmen, sharing his
knowledge and expertise. His passion is a family affair with his three daughters, Ann , Maree and Bindy, heavily involved in horse riding and competing. This season he also had his five grandchildren on the hunt field as well, making it all the more special for him.

people around the world. The post-covid world has been an interesting one and they look forward to assisting with all your travel needs from travel insurance and flights, to cruises, touring, trains and sightseeing. With most of the restrictions
being lifted and prices slowly starting to drop, now is the time to start booking in those destinations that are on your bucket list.
House of Travel Hornby is now in a position to grow and are bringing their valued services to customers, both in Hornby and out into the Selwyn District. To begin with they are running these services by appointment so that they can see as many customers as they can. The more up-take they get, they’ll look to extend the days and hours. Email or phone enquiry is welcome and they can arrange video appointments.
Hornby: Open Monday - Friday, 9am - 4:30pm and as of 5th August they will be open on a Saturday from 9am - 3pm, due to multiple requests. This will be popular, given the limited

The Malvern Anglican Parish is excited to welcome a new vicar to the district. A special induction service at Trinity Church on August 1 from 7.30pm will be held for Reverend Alexa Evenden to welcome her to the Parish. The Reverend will fill a .6FTE position.
Bishop Peterand the Archdeacon Nick Mountfort will attend the service as well as other clergy members from the Diocese.
Helena, a spokesperson for the Parish, says, “It would be wonderful to see as many of you
NEW VICAR
as possible to welcome her. There will be a light supper to follow.”
Rev. Evenden comes with seventeen years of service and her most recent appointment being hospital chaplain at Christchurch Public Hospital for ten years. She also filled in for the Ellesmere Parish and enjoyed the rural atmosphere as well as being the vicar for Otipua in Timaru for three years. She is looking forward to being part of the community and eventually living in the vicarage in Darfield.
“She is very personable and I’m sure everyone will help us make her feel welcome,” says Helen. “We’d also like to thank Tom
Innes, our priest in charge, for filling in while we found a new vicar. Tom has definitely gone above and beyond our expectations for filling the position.”
A good attendance of garden club members at the Darfield Recreation Centre for the July meeting were entertained and informed by Bradley Lake. Bradley is the Co-owner and Head of Business and Sales Development for Mainland Hemp and The Green Bros. He gave us an insight into his journey from university to rugby playing to his first job as a rural banker. His passion for his new venture educated us on what hemp is and what it does.
Hemp is not weed and is a safe plant crop with outputs of oil and powder used in a diverse range of products for nutrition of well-being, gut health and skin products. Bradley’s description of his five year journey through the hemp industry impressed us all and we are now well informed on hemp and its positive properties.
A time of questions and sharing was held and members were able to purchase products. The afternoon concluded with afternoon tea. Lee Stokes.

HISTORIC HOTEL TO BE RESTORED
LABOUR CANDIDATE
Kia ora! My name is Luke Jones; Selwyn’s Labour Party candidate for this General Election. It’s an honour to have been selected to stand as a candidate in this electorate, and to have this opportunity to share my vision for Selwyn over the next few months!
for several years, studied at the University of Canterbury, and founded and grown my own business specialising in public and government relations. At the age of 20, I’m pretty proud of what I’ve achieved; but I am always looking for more ways to serve my communities.
TheHotelasitstandscurrently,allboardedup.
The new owners of the Sheffield Hotel, Nigel and Diane Stevens, are passionate about rebuilding the historic hotel to its former glory. The hotel suffered significant fire damage two years ago after a fire broke out inside the building in the early hours of the morning.
Nigel and Di moved to Sheffield eight years ago before relocating to Tauranga for Nigel’s job three years later. Their daughter Alice attended Sheffield School and Darfield High School. At the time, the pair rented out their house in Sheffield, always
expecting to eventually return home.
“We were devastated when we heard the hotel had suffered significant damage as the result of the fire, as we knew what it meant to the community,” says Di. “When we discovered it was up for sale, we decided to take on the challenge to restore it. It hasn't been easy and many times we thought we would give up, but eight months later, we are finally the new owners”.
The hotel will not be demolished, however Di says that as nothing has been done
since the fire it will require intensive renovation before it will be open for business.
The busy couple also have other plans for the site.
“We plan to get the campground up and running,” says Di, “and we have space to store caravans or buses over winter if anyone is looking for space.”
Keep an eye out for future updates about the Sheffield Hotel in the Malvern News.
It anyone has any photos of the Hotel that they would like to share please email: sheffield.hotel.ltd@gmail.com
Over several years, I have involved myself, and worked hard in, a variety of areas that have, inadvertently, led me to stand in this election. Alongside community advocacy and volunteering efforts, which provide me with immense purpose and joy, I have worked in a small hospitality business
I bring a fresh and positive voice to the Selwyn campaign, which I know is essential for Selwyn to grow positively into the future. Having lived in Rolleston, I have seen first-hand the type of growth Selwyn is experiencing and know this type of leadership is important.
The issues important to me are the same issues important to residents in Selwyn; the cost of living, education investment, transport investment, and police investment. These areas are of vital importance in Selwyn, and only a Labour government can continue to see them implemented. We have a strong record to build upon, to support our communities today and unlock our potential for tomorrow.

DEDICATION TO COMMUNITY
Long-standing Malvern Health & Community Trust co-ordinator
Vicki Mulholland was farewelled recently after being in the position for 28 years.
Vicki is well known by the residents of Malvern and was there at the beginning of the Malvern Health & Community Welfare Trust.
The Trust is responsible for the Malvern District Nurses in the area. Many people benefitted from the confident and efficiently run service that Vicki coordinated. Vicki’s long career began in September 1994 when the Trust was formed. She says she was employed as co-ordinator of the Trust for 7.5 hours per week but soon outgrew those hours. It was a self-made job, learning as they went along, the earlier nurses were a combination of Leith Creamer, Prue Thorne and Gwen Heffernan, a year later Mary Roberts joined the team. The nurses would use their own cars and be reimbursed for kilometres travelled.
“We held a contract with the Canterbury District Health Board for District Nursing and Home Care. I learnt very quickly that coordinating two district nurses and several homecare staff was way more than 7.5 hours per week but considered the other hours my service to the community.”
Along with the District Nursing, Vicki volunteered as co-ordinator of the Malvern Home Nursing Group, which had a pool of approximately 40 nurses to call on for home-based palliative care night sitting.
“We had no funding for weekend district nursing then,” says Vicki, “and I was closely scrutinised by the Home Nursing Trustees as to every hour that was used, but I was confident that we were doing the best for our community.”
Back in those years, everything was done by hand, with no help from a computer. Vicki had to work out wages, annual leave,
everything by pure brain work, sometimes with some help from Ian Warren
In 1996, Vicki was offered a position with Nurse Maude Association, which long term aligned with her Trust position. She worked 20 hours for Nurse Maude and 7.5 hours for Malvern Health.
Of the nurses, Mary, Steph, Belinda, Mary, Amanda, and Sarah, Vicki says they are all outstanding, their qualifications, skills and expertise benefit the community. “Thank you all for your dedication and friendship. I just can’t say enough praise for our nurses, it’s been a pleasure working with you all.”
Vicki is proud of her work and achievements during her time and wishes her successor all the best for the future.
The Trust wishes Vicki all the best in her new endeavours.

BIDS & BUBBLES BALL
Springfield was pumping on Saturday, July 22nd with the inaugural Bids and Bubbles Ball taking place. The cold and rainy evening didn’t seem to dampen anyone’s spirits and the crowd turned up dressed to impress (including one brave chap wearing a kilt!)
Everyone enjoyed catching up over drinks and canapés supplied by local company CaterB, before launching into the auction.
Auctioneers Phil, Scott and Sam from Hazlett Rural whipped the crowd into a frenzy, with fierce and frantic bidding on an amazing array of auction items.
Two trial helicopter flights donated by Christchurch Helicopters were the hottest items of the night, attracting numerous bids and eventually selling for way in excess of their book value. Raffles were also in high demand and the huge number of prizes meant it was difficult to go home empty handed!
The Menzies band kept the crowd on their feet well into the night with a team from Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade and the
Darfield Hotel staffing the bar and keeping patrons hydrated.
The Smylies crew were on hand at the end of the night, providing transport to ensure that everyone got home safely. Everyone seemed to have a great night with many attendees asking when the next one would be happening!
Springfield School PTA President Racheal Lea said, “It was great to see our local community come together and show their support
WESTMAR UPDATE
Led by facilitator, Awhena Kihi, Westmar residents recently celebrated the Matariki festival by designing and making a grand three-dimensional display incorporating flashing lights and the nine glittering stars. On July 14th, residents learned about the pre-European Māori
history of Akaroa and sang an appropriate Māori song, ‘Tutira Mai Nga Iwi’. Then, because it was also the French national day, they learned about the French settlement at Akaroa and sang ‘The Marseillaise’.

for the school while having a great night in the process. The event raised over $19,000, an amazing sum! This will be put to very good use, funding resources, outings and teacher aide hours for our kids”. Springfield School wishes to thank everyone who generously supported Bids and Bubbles, and to Rachael and her helpers for all their hard work in organising this great event.

NICOLA GRIGG - OPINION PIECE
With the school holidays over, local kids head into the business end of the school year. With end of year exams looming, parents across Selwyn will, rightly, be hoping their kids have been well prepared for life outside school.
Increasingly though, students across New Zealand are being let down by a system that is, frankly, alarming.
Education achievement has been in decline for the last thirty years and a recent NCEA pilot exposed just how far achievement has fallen.
Two thirds of secondary school students failed to meet minimum standards in reading, writing and maths, while 98 percent of Decile One Year 10 students failed a basic writing test. This is utterly unacceptable. A National Government will ensure every child gets a worldclass education so when they leave school, they can lead the life they want.
Our ‘Teaching the Basics Brilliantly’ policy will ensure every child has the skills they need in reading, writing, maths and science to set them up for further success.
Firstly, National would require all primary and intermediate schools to teach an hour of reading, an hour of writing and an hour on maths, on average, every day.
Children need the time to acquire knowledge, practice skills and master the basics so they stay with them for life.
Secondly, National will re-write
the curriculum so it says what must be taught each year in reading, writing, maths and science to every year group in primary and intermediate schools.
Currently the curriculum is far too loose, and it does not give teachers clear guidance about what to teach, when.
Instead of being divided by years, it is grouped in ‘bands’ spanning two to three school years.
National will get rid of the three-year bands, replacing them with explicit expectations of achievement and knowledge dissemination for each year group.
We will check children have learned what the curriculum says they should have learned, and we will keep parents informed about where their kids are up to.
Thirdly, National will require schools to assess student progress in reading, writing and maths at least twice a year every year from Year 3 to Year 8, with clear reporting to parents. This will provide something we don’t have at the moment - a reliable, national picture of how New Zealand children are progressing at primary and intermediate school.
At the moment, the first national test for numeracy and literacy is not until NCEA. Until then, we are flying almost completely blind.
Finally, National will ensure that teachers and trainee teachers spend more time learning how to teach the basics. We will also
provide them with more classroom tools and lesson plans to help them teach reading, writing, maths and science. We will set a target of 80 percent of Year 8 students being at or above the expected curriculum level for their age in reading, writing, maths and science by 2030.
We will also aim to return New Zealand students to the top 10 in the world in maths, reading and science, measured by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD’s) Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) rankings, by 2033
Labour has spent $5 billion more on education and hired 1,400 more ministry bureaucrats, and yet our children are going backwards.
After nearly six years of a Labour Government, there’s been no improvement in Year 8’s results. Only 45 percent of Year 8 kids are at the level they should be in maths and only 35 percent are at curriculum level in writing. This just cannot continue. We won’t lift education achievement in New Zealand by continuing to do the same things that are taking us backwards. If New Zealand is to have internationally competitive incomes and living standards, we need a world-class education system that starts with teaching the basics brilliantly.

CADETS ENJOY OPPORTUNITIES
Coleridge Downs first year cadets
Lucy Moffatt and Alexa Gunson are two of eight cadets who were given the opportunity to gain Level 3 and 4 qualifications through Primary ITO. Coleridge Downs, a working farm, offers broad based education across all areas of farming, providing passion and industry training to young people.
Lucy is from the Ashley Gorge
area and attended Rangi Ruru School. She is from a farming and contracting background and says she was greatly missed by her Dad over the summer as she was often driving tractors for him within the contracting business or helping out on farm.
She enjoys the camaraderie of the cadets and staff at Coleridge Downs and loves getting out and getting stuck into her work.
Lucy says she is really keen on the Headwaters Ram breeding and selection program at Coleridge Downs.
Learning as much as possible and gaining as much experience as possible is her main priority during her time at Coleridge Downs.
Alexa is from OngaOnga in the Hawkes Bay where her family farms. She says she really enjoys the hard work and camaraderie of all cadets and staff at Coleridge Downs.
She was recently part of a team of four (three from Coleridge Downs) that flew to the Hawkes Bay to provide support to flood affected farmers carrying out fencing
repairs for a week in the mud and rain.
Alexa’s latest achievement was being awarded her Duke of Edenborough Award at Government House.
Both Alexa and Lucy enjoy taking part in local events along with their fellow cadets and look forward to what the farming industry offers in the future.
Coleridge Downs take enormous pride in their graduating cadets entering the Agricultural Industry with a sound and thorough skill base from which to launch their successful Agricultural career.
Four cadet placements are applied for each year, for a 2 year cadetship. Practical training is provided through working alongside our senior staff in the day to day management of our sheep, beef and deer farms. Applications for next year close on Friday 28th July.
SPRINGFIELD TO CELEBRATE
The Centennial of the Otira Tunnel, early next month, has had a Springfield spinoff.
Springfield will celebrate 100 years since the railway moved to its present site to coincide with the opening of the Tunnel in 1923. It moved so a much larger depot could be built to cope with vastly increased traffic.
Springfield’s Railway Station will be the centre of a Community Open Day on Saturday, August 5th, from 10am—2pm. There’s to be a children's railway centred colouring competition, a free sausage sizzle, coffee cart, the town’s donut cart, railway videos will be on screen, and some older railway people will be on hand.
According to the committee organising the event, the idea is to honour the generations of railway people who ran the major depot in the steam days and until 1989, when the depot closed.
The Otira Tunnel book will be available for purchase at the Springfield Station Open Day ($40.00 plus $9.00 postage.)
If people want to order the book they can visit the Facebook page: Otira Tunnel Commemorations 2023 or Email: otiratunnel2023@gmail.com

MALVERN U3A - JULY MEETING
Malvern U3A meets monthly at the Darfield Baptist Church, normally on the second Friday of the month. It is an organisation for seniors to come together for continuous learning and information and is open to all who are no longer in full time work. While U3A stands for the University of the Third Age, it is not a university in the modern sense of the word; there are no qualifications required and no exams! Head along and see for yourselves.
The group’s recent speaker was Peter McCarthy, who has a long interest in Antarctica. He not only is a senior staff member of Antarctica New Zealand, but has past family who were part of the historic exploration of the continent.
His Grandfather, Mortimer McCarthy , served with Scott on the Terra Nova, having signed on as an able seaman at the last moment. He was still on board when the ship returned two years later to tell the world that Captain Scott had perished on the return from the South Pole, having been beaten to the Pole by Ronald Amundsen
Also, his Grandfather’s brother, Tim McCarthy , sailed with
Ernest Shackleton on the Endurance. This became trapped in pack ice and sank, leaving the crew shipwrecked on Elephant Island. To get rescued a lifeboat was modified and sailed 1,500km to South Georgia. The lifeboat was named ‘James Caird’ and was crewed by Shackleton, Tim McCarthy and four other crew members. This was one of the greatest small boat feats ever.
In the meantime, the rest of the crew created a shelter under two upturned lifeboats to waiting to be rescued, which eventually came after many near disasters. It was to the credit of all that no lives were lost.
The lure of Antarctica was always strong for Peter, who in 2007 was accepted on Canterbury University’s Graduate Cert in Antarctic studies while on leave without pay from the Police Force. This included two weeks on an Antarctic field trip in polar tents and ice caves on the Ross Ice Shelf. The highlight was visiting Scott’s Terra Nova Hut at Cape Evans, which his Grandfather helped to build.
A point Peter made was how many local people are or have been connected to Antarctica.
Indeed, this writer (Ian Sandford) has had two cousins who have stayed over at Scott Base.
Peter’s presentation was richly illustrated with historic photos and maps, including among many the final destruction of the Endurance, (which may well be recovered in the near future).
Malvern U3A were grateful to Peter for his informative presentation and could have listened to much more!
Our next speakers topic will be a ‘Closer Look at New Zealand Deep Endemics’, on August 11th.
Ian Sandford, on behalf of Malvern U3A.

UNIQUE SPONSORSHIP FOR DARFIELD RUGBY CLUB
Jason Searle from Darfield, has been very instrumental this season arranging sponsorship for the local rugby club. His latest idea is selling advertising space on his prosthetic leg through Trade Me - one auction for the front and the other for the back.
This auction gives the successful bidder an unique opportunity to put their business logo on the front or back of his prosthetic leg. The logo will be printed in 3D on the socket and stay there for a minimum of 12 months. Jason wears shorts 365 days of the year
and is always walking around the streets of Darfield, the Selwyn area and Christchurch which would give maximum exposure. All monies raised will be donated to the Darfield Rugby Football Club and the highest bidder could also gain a gold sponsorship with
DARFIELD GUN CLUB
It’s been all go for the Darfield Gun Club with inter-club competitions in full swing. The Club recently entered two events, the Greg West Memorial Shoot and Vale Shield (Minis).
The Greg West Memorial Shoot, a new event for the Darfield team, was held at Ellesmere Clay Target Club and involved Team Ellesmere and Team Waihora.
The B and C Grade shooters had some good scores and were bolstered by good efforts from Dave Folley and Bevan Brown Dave went on to win a placing in the overall scoring for the day, however the overall the team score was low.
The Vale Shield (Minis), held at Canterbury Clay Target Club, saw
a better turn-out of top shooters. Early shooting was aided by a good light coming from behind and despite the small size of the targets, visibility was good. Early action saw Steve Gawn and Bevan Brown score possibles in the 25 target Eye-opener.
In round two, the Club Mini Champs became the practice for the Vale Shield. Only three possible 15/15s were shot with Bevan Brown leading the way for the Club as one of the three. Following close behind were Marcel VanLeeuwen and Rupert Wright who both scored 14/15, however due to Robert not being a member of Canterbury, he wasn’t eligible for the shoot-off. Lunch was taken and the light
changed with the arrival of heavier cloud. The Darfield team struggled with the dull conditions, and all members of the team managed to miss targets to drop them well out of contention becoming 4th equal. The winning team lost only three targets on their way to the trophy with a score of 72/75.
The next event for the Darfield team is the CAC team shoot at Amberley on July 29 and the August highlight is the Bodkin Shield in Central Otago, where a big contingent is booked to attend.
Keep your powder dry and your eyes open.
Bevan Brown, Publicity Officer, Darfield Gun Club.
ULTIMATE FRISBEE WORLD CHAMPS
Local West Melton lad Nik Hodgman recently competed at the World Flying Disc Federation
(WFDF) 2023 World Under-24
Ultimate Frisbee Championships in Nottingham, UK from July 2-8.
Nik attended six training camps in New Zealand before heading to London for a pre-tournament week. The team played London Fire and Singapore in the warmups, winning both games. The team finished tenth in the competition and were seeded twelfth. They lost to Japan on universe, which means the last point wins, and tied with
Australia and the Netherlands in pool play and lost on points differential between the three teams. They beat the Netherlands and Ireland on universe points.
Nik was introduced to the sport 5-6 years ago by Bailie Graham at Darfield High School. Ultimate Frisbee is a fast-moving, competitive, non-contact sport. The object of the game is to gain points by scoring goals. The disc may only be passed, and a goal is scored when a player successfully passes the disc to a teammate in the end zone, which
that team is attacking. The team with the most points at the end of the game is declared the winner.
Nik played for a Christchurch Club called the ‘Exiles’ for a couple of years, and then he made the New Zealand Under 20 team, which went to the Philippines to compete. He then changed to Credo Club to play for ‘Dogma’, the open division squad, before being selected for the Under 24 team to compete at the world champs. 2023 GENERAL ELECTION TEAM
Recruitment is underway for the 2023 General Election.
“The Electoral Commission needs more than 20,000 people from all over the country to help us deliver the Election,” commented Anusha Guler, the Electoral Commission’s Deputy Chief Executive Operations.
“This is a great opportunity to be part of the Election Team and support your community to have their say on October 14th.
The Commission provides training and support to people
working on the Election, and all jobs are paid. There’s a range of roles, from greeting voters in a voting place and issuing votes, to helping with administrative tasks in an office.
“We’re looking for people who are organised, pay attention to detail, and have great people skills. Whether you want to work for just a day or a few weeks, there are roles available to suit you.
“A voting place should reflect the community it serves and be
LIP-SYNC BATTLE
Lip-Sync battle comes to Christchurch and you can take part! Have you ever watched a lip-sync battle and wished you could give it a go yourself? Or is there a music video that you’ve always been obsessed with and wanted to emulate? Now you can! It’s also for a good cause; the event is a fundraiser for Aviva, who every year help thousands of people across Canterbury live free from violence.
Aviva’s vision is an Aotearoa free from family and sexual violence.
Originally established in 1973 as New Zealand’s first Women’s Refuge, Aviva now provides a range of specialist services to support people to create a life free from family and sexual violence, and overcome its enduring harms. Aviva’s emergency support services are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The event will take place on Friday, October 13th at Majestic on Durham Street. Organisers are hoping to recruit eight teams of performers who are excited to put in the practise, get the community behind them and put on a fabulous performance.
If you’re always singing in the shower or dancing around the kitchen (or office!), this is your chance to show off your skills, for good cause. It’s also an opportunity for businesses wanting to give back and raise the profile of their organisation (and a great staff social to boot). Money will be raised through ticket sales, sponsorship and voting - all money raised will go directly to Aviva family and sexual violence services.
To sign up for the lip-sync battle, or for more information please contact Eve at Aviva on 027 453 7323, or email evew@aviva.org.nz
run by local people. If you want to build your work experience, and use your skills to help people vote, we’d love to hear from you,” concluded Anusha. Applicantscanregisterand applyforrolesthrough work.elections.nz Jobsarelistedbyelectorate.
