The Atoms International Polo Exchange took place in Singapore from the 28th of June until the 5th of July. James Reid, aged 15, from Kirwee, was one of five lucky New Zealand youth players to join the trip, which was a first for the Singapore Polo Club.

The programme is not just about polo but also a cultural exchange and an opportunity to broaden skills and friendships across the world in the spirit of polo. The group of players had the opportunity to tour the Singapore Polo Grounds, which is set in the heart of the city centre surrounded by high rise buildings.

Three hundred horses are housed on the grounds, with other equestrian events catered for, including jumping and dressage.

The group were hosted by the Club to a traditional Singaporean lunch and stayed on site for seven nights. They had a number of polo ponies to select from for their games, and it was decided to mix up the players from both countries to even up the skill levels, which resulted in a draw, with each team

winning one game.

James was recognised for his contribution to the Tournament, receiving the Most Valuable Player Award for his Sportsmanship. The boys also enjoyed some sightseeing, visiting the Zoo, Marina Bay Sands Hotel, Sentosa Island and Chinatown, amongst other things.

James has been playing polo since he was eleven years of age and plays in a School league within the South Island, as well as being a member of Port Hills Polo Club. He has successfully gained a handicap of 0 for the next season.

He enjoyed playing at the Sheffield Country Polo Day last year and hopes to play again this year on the 11th of November and support his community. Polo is an exciting game that requires dedication. His team of four horses are ridden or played six days a week in the summer to keep them fit and allows James to practise his skills with the ball and mallet. James is looking forward to other opportunities polo might bring in the future.

FIRST PUBLIC MEETING

Newly elected Chairman of the Darfield Residents Association (DRA), Harvey Polglase, commented that at the first public meeting of the group the response by the Selwyn District Council (SDC) to their questions around chlorination of the Darfield water supply was disappointing.

Ken May , Chair of the Malvern Community Board, apologised that no one from SDC was able to attend to answer questions from the audience but outlined the current situation.

Chlorination of Darfield water is legally obligated until an exemption is granted by Taumata Arowai, and SDC has indicated that Darfield is about the bottom of the list for

consideration. Any action is likely to take many years and Council advice appears to show this is due to the septic tank situation and rural backflow connections to the water supply. However, it was pointed out that the Medical Officer of Health has previously stated that the septic tanks in Darfield pose no threat to the water supply. In addition, SDC has had several hundred thousand dollars in previously (and currently) collected rates for ‘Darfield Sewage Investigation’, which can no longer be needed and could be used to sort the backflow issue. The residents agreed to ask SDC to review the Darfield situation with a view to progressing an application as soon as possible.

The newly formed Residents Association is also looking to get involved with pedestrian crossings to improve safety for children and have contacted SDC regarding this. A proposal is underway to work with the community in hosting a big Christmas event for Darfield, and a design competition for a logo for the Association is to be held. Details will be posted on the DRA Facebook account and in the Malvern News, so keep an eye out. Overall, the Association intends to become a strong advocate for the needs of Darfield residents, to ensure we have a great community going forward.

DARFIELD BRICKTACULAR

The Darfield Bricktacular will take place on August 26th, at the Darfield Recreation Centre, on behalf of the Darfield Primary School PTA. This event is a fundraiser for the much needed renovation of the Darfield primary School Sports Shed, as well as new equipment for the growing number of students.

The Darfield Bricktacular will be a fun, family event for the whole community to enjoy. The event will feature House of Bricks ‘Play and Display’ with Lego Masters New Zealand contestants Rachel and Jason de Vries , Lego themed ‘play pits’ including Duplo for the young, Technic for the experienced and everything in between. There will be an Individual Building Competition where people build their entry at home and take it along to the event. It will be open to all ages (preschool, children and adults). $2 per entry.

Malvern Schools (preschool and Years 1-8) have been invited to

put together a team to fill a trestle table with their creations, which will be judged on the day. The challenge is to design and build a new landmark or place that represents the town where the school is based.

There will also be brick-themed stalls, a crafty kids activity station with a pick and paint your own minifigure or brick plaster of paris ornament.

Taszelle (Art and Craft Shop) will be attending with custom printed brick-themed shirts, presales are available via her Facebook page: Taszelle.

House of Bricks, design your own minifigure will be available for purchase also.

There is an amazing raffle with fantastic prizes, which will be drawn after the event. There will be a sausage sizzle, bake sale, The Coffee Lady and more. This is a cash only event. Tickets can be pre-purchased online at: www.trybooking.com click on Explore Events and put Darfield in the search Event Section. Visit the Darfield Primary School PTA Facebook page for further details.

TheImportanceof RegularVehicleServicing

HelloFellowRoadusers. Regular and proper, full vehicle servicing is a critical aspect of responsible car ownership. While it may be tempting to overlook or postpone servicing appointments or even go for just an oil change, neglecting routine maintenance can lead to a host of issues, including reduced performance, decreased fuel efficiency and potential safety hazards. Let me highlight the significance of properly servicing your vehicle and the long-term benefits it offers.

Regular servicing ensures that your vehicle operates at its best. During a proper service, our qualified technicians inspect and check various components on your vehicle such as the engine, brakes, suspension and transmission. They check for any signs of wear and tear, fluid leaks, or malfunctioning parts, then we can fix the issues promptly. By addressing these issues early on, you can prevent major breakdowns and costly repairs in the future, thus maintaining the reliability and longevity of your vehicle. Safety should always be a top

priority when it comes to driving. Servicing your vehicle regularly helps identify potential safety concerns. Technicians also check vital safety components such as brakes, tyres, steering and lights, ensuring they are functioning optimally. Malfunctioning brakes or worn-out tyres, for example, can significantly compromise your ability to stop in time or maintain control in emergency situations. Regular servicing minimises such risks, providing you and your passengers with a safe and secure driving experience.

A well-maintained vehicle tends to be more fuel-efficient. During a service, our technicians clean or replace air filters, check spark plugs if fitted, change engine oil and check fuel systems, among other things. These measures help improve engine efficiency, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. By servicing your vehicle regularly, you can save money on fuel costs and contribute to a greener environment by reducing your carbon footprint.

If you plan to sell or trade-in your vehicle in the future,

regular servicing plays a vital role in maintaining its resale value. A well-documented service history indicates that your vehicle has been well cared for and is in good condition. Potential buyers are more likely to offer a higher price for a vehicle with a comprehensive service record, as it provides them with confidence in the vehicle's reliability and performance.

In conclusion, regular vehicle servicing is a wise investment that ensures optimal performance, enhances safety, improves fuel efficiency and preserves the resale value of your vehicle. By prioritising routine maintenance, you can avoid costly repairs, breakdowns, and potential safety hazards. Ultimately, servicing your vehicle is a responsible choice that guarantees a smoother, safer and more enjoyable driving experience, while maximising the longevity of your vehicle.

Happy and safe driving, from Macca and the team at Darfield Automotive.

The building of the Ōtira Tunnel was a phenomenal challenge. Men and women lived and worked in and around the Ōtira Tunnel at McLeanville on the west and at Bealey Flat on the east, 110 years ago in harsh conditions.

In 1923 engineers, project managers, tunnellers, locals and all the members of Parliament celebrated the completion of the Tunnel.

CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS

On July 15th this year, The Otira Tunnel Centenary, ‘Through The Alps The Ōtira Railway Tunnel’ book launch will take place in the Arthur's Pass Community Centre. Everyone is welcome, and wine and cheese will be supplied.

The Centennial of the Ōtira Railway Tunnel, which has linked the East and West for 100 years (1923 - 2023) is also being celebrated with events at Ōtira

on Friday, August 4th and more events in Arthur’s Pass on the Saturday.

When the Tunnel was built hundreds of workers lived in primitive conditions at the Arthur’s Pass and Otira ends of the Tunnel. To show what those conditions were like, a replica of a single man’s hut has been built to display at the centennial celebrations.

The hut will be at the Western Tunnel mouth where visitors at the celebrations will be taken by bus to the site of one of the construction camps. In preparation for the Otira Tunnel Centennial celebrations, children from several schools have been painting the pedestrian subway which allows access to the Otira Railway Station.

Schools including Gloriavale, Springfield and Lake Brunner have created works that will be protected by a special sprayed on coating.

Register at Eventbrite to be part of the day, including a photo display, a guided trip to the Ōtira Tunnel viewing area, lunch (supplied) and complimentary tea and coffee.

The Tunnellers’ Shindig will take place at the Bealey Hotel, Arthur’s Pass on August 5th. The band for the evening will be ‘The Eastern’, which will provide a rolling, rambling, shambling, family hoedown atmosphere. Tickets are limited to 120 people and will include supper. Tickets are non-refundable.

A limited edition gold medallion, specially minted for the Otira Tunnel Centennial, has almost sold out.

The medallion is a replica of one presented to the Prime Minister, Sir William Massey when the Tunnel was opened. The medallion has a representation of the original design on one side.

The 250 medallions have been created by the Rail Heritage Trust and Zenith Coins, though their representative in

Greymouth.

KiwiRail has purchased a large number of the gold coins. A further 100 coins have been ordered in silver.

The original medallion presented to Sir William Massey, is held in the Massey Collection in Palmerston North.

WADDINGTON TURNS 150

An advertisement in the Lyttelton Times found on Papers Past website has led to the discovery that the little town of Waddington is about to turn 150 years old. The advert promoted the upcoming sale of sections in Waddington by Auction on Tuesday, July 22nd, 1873 with auctioneers Messrs H Matson & Co.

The township was named after William Waddington , who bought the land in 1873 and laid out the plan, dividing it into building sections. The area was part of the Homebush run previously owned by John Deans. A small group of local residents have come together to create a celebration of Waddington for past and present residents and all those who are interested in the township’s local history on Saturday, July 22nd, 2023. A guided Waddington Walk with

local Hazel Wheeler will start at 11am from the St John’s Camp on Waddington Road. The Walk will be followed by a pot luck lunch at the camp from 12pm2pm, where everyone can meet up and share memories. People are encouraged to bring along their photos for a show and tell, and there will also be a pamphlet, with a map showing early locations of homes and businesses, available for sale for a gold coin donation.

Waddington has a village-like

atmosphere and has recently seen a number of new residents move into the area along with some new builds. Several historic buildings still remain including local landmark Pine House, originally the butcher shop; two Cornish miners’ cottages; the Old Parsonage built in 1881; and the former Malvern Public School built in 1875. The township has its own Facebook page and newsletter, The Waddington Express, for its residents to provide neighbourly support.

YOUTH HUB OPENED

A live DJ, fades and braids and even a talking car were part of a fun afternoon celebrating the official opening of the new Selwyn Youth Hub, based in Rolleston Community Centre.

A steady crowd of visitors enjoyed the afternoon of celebrations with KITT the Knight Rider car, food, drink, activities and competitions. Representatives from the wide range of service providers and Selwyn’s four high schools also attended.

The Youth Hub is a collaboration, bringing together youth services and organisations from around the community, including The Collective Trust,

Youth Town, Family Planning and Te Tahi Youth, to deliver services and programmes dedicated to young people aged twelve to twenty four years old. The Hub idea and the services provided were based on needs identified by Selwyn young people and by the principals at the four Selwyn high schools. The services are designed to help young people grow, thrive and feel connected in the Selwyn community.

Services will range from health services, counselling, career advice, education and training, through to events, activities and courses parenting and youth courses, learner driver courses,

drug and alcohol counselling sessions, art classes, te reo Māori classes and waiata sessions.

BOOKS TO BE PUBLISHED

Greendale writer Sandra Arnold's two latest books will be published this month, ‘Where the Wind Blows’ (Truth Serum Press, Australia) and ‘The Bones of the Story’ (Impspired, UK). Sandra is an award-winning writer whose other books include The Ash, the Well and the Bluebell, Soul Etchings, Sing no Sad Songs, Tomorrow’s Empire, A Distraction of Opposites. Her short fiction has been published and anthologised internationally and has received nominations for The Best Small Fictions, Best Microfictions and The Pushcart Prize (is an American literary prize published by Pushcart Press that honours the best poetry, short fiction, essays or literary whatnot published in the small presses over the previous year. Magazine and small book press editors are invited to submit up to six works they have featured). She has held writing residencies in The Robert Lord Cottage, Dunedin and the Seresin/Landfall/ University of Otago Press, Waterfall Bay. Sandra has a PhD in Creative Writing from Central Queensland University, Australia. Reviews:

Where the Wind Blows: “Hummingbirds in wild orchids in Brazil, a giant turtle laying her eggs by moonlight on an Omani beach, Sandra’s settings in Where the Wind Blows are at once exotic and deeply felt, but equally deeply felt are the inner landscapes of her protagonists as they seek understanding in the

wake of loss,” commented James Norcliffe, author of Letter to Oumuamua, 2022 NZ Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement.

The Bones of the Story: “The Bones of the Story immediately draws the reader in with its premise concerning the mysterious death of a child. Readers are invited to discover how the event haunts those who witnessed what passed. The stories reveal the ugly underbelly of an apparently sweet Blytonesque world where children derive pleasure from gobstoppers and daring each other to take risks,” commented Nod Ghosh , author of The Crazed Wind, Filthy Sucre and Toy Train, Throw A Seven, Love, Lemons and Illicit Sex, The TwoTailed Snake and How to Bake a Book.

“Sandra Arnold has written a deft and gripping novella. Here, told in a variety of brilliantly penned

individual narratives, is a demonstrable accounting of the durable, albeit hard-won matter we are made of,” commented Robert Scotellaro, author of Ways to Read the World and What Are the Chances?

“Sandra Arnold makes yet another splash in the literary world with her newest novella-in -flash The Bones of the Story. It is a page turner that I simply could not put it down. Told from multiple perspectives, The Bones of the Story is beautifully written, a gripping mystery, and among the best novellas I’ve ever read. She is deserving of a major award,” commented Niles Reddick , Pulitzer nominated author.

INFORMATIVE EVENING

The North Rural Support Trust teamed up with former television presenter, turned farmer, and mental health advocate Matt Chisholm to generate conversations about resilience and mental wellness in rural communities.

Matt headed to Darfield High School Hall on his ‘Time Out Tour’ on Wednesday, July 5th and spoke to a capacity crowd. As a speaker, Matt shared his honest, raw and inspiring story with the intention of helping others who are battling their demons.

He was able to move through the mental health challenges he faced and give ideas to those present on how they can use these themselves when times get tough.

Talk to someone, tell people you are feeling overwhelmed, do something for yourself, get off your farm and do something you really love. Things people think are important at the time may be not down the track. Most importantly if you are struggling, see a doctor or talk to a counsellor. For help and support, contact Rural Support Trust on 088 787 254. Their services are free and confidential. Organisers spoke to some

attendees whilst enjoying a delicious supper provided by Darfield High School’s PTSA. They heard positive feedback from folk who enjoyed and took some inspiration from the

evening.

On behalf of Matt and North Canterbury Rural Support, thank you to all that took some time away from the normality of life to join us.

Darfield Garden Club’s June meeting was held at the Recreation Centre. We welcomed Jill Reader , a senior tutor from Lincoln University who spoke to us and demonstrated propagation. Jill showed us how to propagate a fig tree and there was valuable time of questions and answers, followed by propagation of other plants, shrubs and trees. She enlightened us on the use of tissue culture, which is used widely overseas.

Recently, two members visited the Tai Tapu Garden Club for a luncheon. They enjoyed their hospitality, as well as guest speaker Steve Bush, Manager for the Canterbury Nursery, who started working at Trees for Canterbury over thirty years ago and was passionate about his work for Trees for Canterbury.

Georgie Eaves won the flower competition.

Our next meeting will be held at the Recreation Centre on July 18th at 1.30 pm, with Bradley Lake speaking on the History and Uses of Hemp.

New members are always welcome.

Lee Stokes.

SUCCESSFUL INSTORE DAYS

Ruralco’s 29th annual Instore Days’ which ran from Thursday 6th to Friday 7th of July, proved to be a great success despite cautious expectations leading up to the event.

Group CEO, Robert Sharkie said, “There was some nervousness pre-Instore Days given the current economic environment. We know it’s hard work out there at the moment, but we have been pleasantly surprised with the positive response to our Instore Days. It’s great to see that level of confidence within the farming community as we come together to celebrate all things agricultural.”

While the Ashburton, Rakaia and Methven stores all experienced high numbers of visitors, Ruralco’s online presence continued to grow during Instore Days, with the first online sale recorded at 2am on the first day. “It’s great to be able to meet our member’s needs in a variety of ways. Yes, it’s about pricing, but it’s also about providing meaningful and sincere service. We know that our business is intricately intertwined with our

farmers’ businesses - we are very attuned to that, and we genuinely care about what happens to them.”

There’s been even more cause for celebration this year as the farming cooperative gears up for its 60th anniversary next month. From humble beginnings in 1963, when a group of Mid Canterbury farmers got together to find ways to lower agricultural input costs, the co-operative has grown beyond its original catchment, having a national reach through its online presence and card network. Instore Days is part of that long held tradition and remains a great opportunity for the farming

community to come together, to meet with the Ruralco team and other industry players to hear first-hand about products, services, new initiatives and technologies which can assist all farming operations. This year over eighty supplier businesses participated onsite and online, with an extensive network of card merchants also participating through their own stores and with more than 2,000 members attending the two-day event.

“The original intent to support farmers has remained unchanged. We’ve had farmers’ backs for sixty years, and we will continue to do so for another sixty,” Robert concluded.

ROSS SHIELD MATCH

The July 2nd shoot at Darfield Gun Club meant it was the time of year again to contest the Ross Shield Handicap match. A good crowd of thirty one shooters turned out this month despite the less than ideal weather conditions.

The eye-opener was a 20 target Single Barrell match, and despite the strong southwest wind, two possibles (20/20) were scored, one in B Grade and one in AA. Round 1 of the Ross Shield was a bit disappointing, with no possibles scored. This was to be expected as the wind and murk made their presence felt. AJ Seymour top scored with a score of 24/25 to lead the pack from the C Grade, with several shooters just a target back on 23. Round 2 and AJ crashed down the rankings, there were two possibles, but with a score of 24/25 to follow on from a 23 in Round 1 Ron Greatorex surpassed all others to take out the Ross Shield for 2023. Four shoot-offs were required to sort out the minor placings of second to eighth, and some excellent shooting was on display in the

fading light.

Thanks to everyone who helped and also supplied afternoon tea on the day.

Admission is free. Supper, tea, coffee, milo & fruit juice will be supplied.

The Sheffield Waddington Township Committee, as its last function, would like to invite everyone from our local area to a get together to publicly thank all the volunteers, both past and present, that have served our community on the following committees, that the Council has now disestablished, such as the Hall, Swimming Pool, Domain, Pavilion, plus the Book Exchange and Township Committee itself.

These committees diligently served as an arm of the Council in some form for over a century and now the Council has decided to take control of these assets. These volunteers gave their time for the betterment of the community, so this function is an opportunity to thank everyone for their commitment. All is not lost; Council has assured these facilities will still be available for the users. Like Matariki, the Council has created new beginning.

There will also be an opportunity to say farewell to Desirae Johnson and possibly welcome the incoming owners of the Hotel.

A fellow walked into a doctors office and the recep onist asked him what he had. He said, "Shingles." So she took down his name, address, medical insurance number and told him to have a seat. A few minutes later a nurse aid came out and asked him what he had. He said, "Shingles" so she took down his height, weight, a complete medical history and told him to wait in the examining room.

Ten minutes later a nurse came in and asked him what he had. He said, "Shingles" so she gave him a blood test, a blood pressure test, an electrocardiogram, told him to take all his clothes off and wait for the doctor. Fi een minutes later the doctor came in and asked what he had. He said, "Shingles." The doctor said, "Where?" and the bloke replied, "Outside in the truck, where do you want them put?”
