ISSUE 1,090
Friday 16th June 2023
Leon Tymons was incredibly lucky to be selected as the Tee Kid for the Crusaders team last Saturday night at the Super Rugby Quarter Finals at Orangetheory Stadium. Leon (aged twelve) is a Year 8 student at Darfield High School. He's played rugby for Darfield Rugby Football Club since he was six years old, and like
many others his age, he dreams of becoming a Crusader. The day before the game, Leon spent the morning hanging out with the Crusaders at the Captain's Run. He got to meet all the team and was excited to chat to number 10, Richie Mo'ungathe best kicker in the world (so Leon reckons).

“We also got a guided tour of behind the scenes at the Stadium, and we found that Leon's name was already in the tunnel and changing room. Okay, it was Leon McDonald, but switch the surnames and he's halfway there! Perhaps he'll make it there for real one day?” Continuedonpage3... LeonTymonswithRichieMo'unga.

BOOK FAIR
From 1st - 5th July Trinity Church Hall
ANNUAL BOOK FAIR
The Annual Book Fair, hosted by Malvern Anglican Parish, will take place over five days beginning on the 1st of July.
Once a one-day affair, held in a small room at Trinity Church in Darfield, the Fair has grown to a five-day event that has moved out of the Church and is now held at Trinity Hall.
“Judging by recent years’ Book Fairs, the Hall will be crammed full of tables, groaning with books and other entertainment to help you through winter”, commented organiser Anthony McLean
“It’s become a hugely popular event in the district, offering literally thousands of donated books at great prices. In recent years the first two days were very busy with well over 2,000 books going out the door, in the hands of happy patrons. There’s always a huge selection of fiction, including children’s and young adults’ literature. Reading with your children is a great way to entertain them and is a fine family activity by the fireside. Grandchildren spending the holidays with you? Those bed-time stories from gramps or grandma will be fondly remembered for years! Fiction is only one of the sections that volunteers create
for the Fair. There are always large offerings of cooking, gardening, craft, travel, biography, sports and history books. You’ll find just the thing to inspire a new range of meals to cook over winter, find out about a new destination to include in future travel plans, or get your introduction to a new craft or hobby, or you may find the biography of a sporting hero you remember from the good old days.
There’s now also a section on New Zealand books. It includes New Zealand authors, histories, guide books, books on native flora and fauna and pictorial books.
“It is not just books. We always have jigsaw puzzles, games, music CDs and movies! DVDs, even VHS tapes. With so much to keep you amused on rainy winter days, it’s hard to leave empty handed!
The books on display are refreshed each day, so the best buys do not all go on opening days of the Fair. People who make a second visit will find new items to browse through. Later days of the fair are usually a bit quieter, and if you prefer a leisurely browse those might suit you better. There will still be plenty of great buys.
“We’re very grateful to those who have already started assembling their donations for our Annual Book Fair. Please drop donations off in the foyer of Trinity Church, or directly to the Fair on opening day. You can bring your great buys from last year’s fair, donating them means they go another round! (But please remember, no magazines or textbooks).
“So come along to the Malvern Parish Annual Book Fair,” Anthony concluded.

TEE KID FOR THE CRUSADERS
...continuedfromfrontpage.
During the victorious game (49-8) against the Fijian Drua, the Crusaders scored seven tries and had a couple of disallowed tries, so Leon got the chance to run onto the field lots of times! He got to stand behind Richie and watch him score six conversions and one at the end by Fergus Burke
“At the end of the game, Richie walked over from the bench, shook Leon's hand, and thanked him for doing a good job. Richie was sore and probably very tired, and he didn't need to do that, but at that moment he made a twelve year old incredibly happy. He's an amazing role model, and we'll miss him from the team when he moves overseas next year,” Celia concluded.
Leon and his family would like to acknowledge this amazing opportunity that the Crusaders offer to kids. It was an incredible experience, one that Leon will never forget!
RESIDENTS GROUP FOR DARFIELD
On Wednesday, May 31st, a meeting was held by the Malvern Community Board in Darfield to elect a committee to form the new Residents Group for Darfield. Approximately twenty community residents were present. Malvern Community Board members advised the people in attendance of the
importance of forming a Residents Group, and the people responded with six people on the night expressing interest in joining the committee.
The Malvern Community Board will work with the Group to get it up and running.
The next step will be to hold a committee meeting to elect a
ARE YOU READY?
Do you know what’s likely to happen if an earthquake hits Selwyn, or a tsunami?
Earthquakes, wildfires, storms and tsunamis are all among the top risks for emergencies in Selwyn. As people have seen with recent earthquakes, wildfires and storms here in Selwyn, emergencies can happen anytime and anywhere, and often without warning. It is up to you to make sure you and your family are ready and know what to do. You may need to take care of yourselves for several days, or longer.
The good news is, with a little preparation it’s easy to get ready now.
“The Selwyn Emergency Management team will be sharing tips about how to be prepared, in an interactive event
at Te Ara Ātea this month. The evening will include information on an Alpine Fault earthquake and the latest tsunami information for Selwyn, along with practical tips and discussions on how you can be ready for an emergency,” commented Selwyn Emergency Management Officer, Jason Flewellen
“There’s lots people can do to be ready and we’re here to help with that. It doesn’t have to be scary, but it’s good to get it sorted so you don’t have to worry. We’re looking forward to a fun evening, but with a really important message for everyone to hear,” Jason concluded.
See advertisement alongside for further details.
Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson and a Secretary for the first instance, adopt a constitution and discuss any other business as the committee deems fit. This meeting date is yet to be decided, but will be published in next week’s Malvern News and on social media.

WINTER FEED COMP 2023
The Malvern and Courtenay A&P Associations combined Winter Feed Competition was held on the 7th and 8th of June, with fifty four paddocks judged throughout the district from West Melton to Lake Coleridge to Springfield. There were a good number of entries to get through in two days, which reflected good growing conditions through summer.
The Judges were Luke Visser from Agricom and Sam Lucas from RAGT. Stewards once again were Ashley Seaton and Guy Bassett, plus this year Scott McIlroy came on board, securing a new prizegiving venue, helping out with transport, food for Judges and the photography.
Luke and Sam commented that compared to last year, it was good to see a broad range of crop types entered, with yields
and quality across spring and autumn sown crops being very high.
The focus crop Ravensdown Plate was awarded to a rape crop, entered by Bodie Hawkins, that stood out exceptionally within its class. The Supreme Winner was a paddock of fodder beet entered by Jeremy and Deb Silva , which the Judges said was exceptional

GOLD STAR FOR GUY ANDERSON
On Saturday, May 20th, Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade hosted an evening to present Station Officer Guy Anderson with a Gold Star Medal for twenty five years of service to the community as a Firefighter.
Guy’s Gold Star Medal was presented by The Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigades Association President Amelia Jackman , on behalf of the United Fire Brigades Association. Other presentations were made by Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigades Association. Fire and Emergency New Zealand Group Manager Al Hutt , Canterbury Gold Star Association Representative Graeme Reid and Selwyn District Councillor
Phil Dean
Guy started in 1997 and has given continuous service to the Darfield community and Fire Brigade for the entire time. Guy has given many hundreds of hours to training, meetings and incidents at all hours of the day and night. He has responded to every type of incident the Brigade has been called to, including structure fires, motor vehicle accidents, vegetation fires and medical incidents, often either leading the crew or being first to respond to the needs of affected people. Guy's accumulated knowledge and experience have helped to train his fellow Firefighters to a very high standard. He always strives to instil safe working procedures, ensuring safe outcomes for everyone around him and injecting some fun at the same
time.
During a speech from Guy, he acknowledged his partner Mel and daughters Sam and Kaitlyn for their support during the last twenty five years as he rushed away to calls often in the middle of family time. He also acknowledged his long-time employers at Bray Street
Engineering for allowing him to drop tools and respond to the siren.
Guy’s Gold Star is the twenty sixth issued to a member of the Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade. Chief Fire Officer John Chambers also awarded Guy a Life Honorary Medal to Darfield Fire Brigade.

BANK STATEMENTS
What Your Bank Statements Say About You
Whenever you are looking for a loan, the banks will ask to see the latest three months bank statements (some banks like six months).
What they are looking for is a snapshot of how you conduct your accounts, what your spending habits are like, and
whether these habits and behaviours are likely to change with the challenge of repaying a mortgage.
For example, if every day you have outgoings to the TAB, they may conclude you have a gambling habit that may not change. Evidence of dining out six days a week, regular spending at the bar or liquor store etc are all red flags that the bank will consider when they assess your suitability for a mortgage.
Account conduct is a big issue for the banks, and any
late payments, unarranged overdrafts or dishonours are all likely to count against you when it comes to getting an approval.
If you are thinking about getting mortgage ready, make those bank statements great reading for the credit assessor to give yourself the best chance.

MALVERN U3A UPDATE
Malvern U3A meets monthly at the Darfield Baptist Church, normallyonthesecondFridayof the month. It is an organisation for seniors to come together for continuous learning and information and is open to all who are no longer in full time work. While U3A stands for the UniversityoftheThirdAge,itis not a university in the modern sense of the word; there are no qualifications required and no exams!
Come along and see for yourselves.
This month’s speaker was Caroline Johnson of the New Zealand Red Cross. The title of her talk was ‘The Red Cross, Past Present and Future.’
While many of us thought we knew a lot about the New Zealand Branch of the Red Cross there is so much we did not know.
The Red Cross is the largest humanitarian association in the world, operating in one hundred and ninety three countries under three banners; the well-known Red Cross symbol, the Red Crescent and recently added the Red Crystal, which is a red diamond shape. Attendees also learnt the association is the coordinating force behind Meals on Wheels. The origins of the Red Cross go back to the Battle of Solferino in what is now Italy in 1859. Henri Dunant , a Swiss citizen, saw the suffering at this battle and set about bringing aid and hospital care to the wounded soldiers. He then proposed the formation in all countries of voluntary relief societies for the prevention and
alleviation of suffering in war and peacetime, without distinction of race or creed; he also proposed an International Agreement covering the war wounded. In 1863, he founded the International Committee for the Relief of the Wounded (now the International Committee of the Red Cross), and the following year the first national societies and the first Geneva Convention came into being. The main tenets being Don’t Shoot, Don’t Loot, Don’t Harm.
Henri Dunant was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1901 and died in 1910.
We do know that the Red Cross parcels that were distributed in the First and Second World Wars were so well received that soldiers felt that at least they were not forgotten.
It is due to his sterling work that the International Red Cross is so well known today, working in war-torn areas, natural disasters and wherever humanitarian need is required. They are ready to help with medical aid, clean water, civil engineering needs, communications, as well as basics like food and shelter. The Red Cross do not work in isolation, they work with all the other charitable and humanitarian aid and service personnel to bring about the best outcome for the people receiving aid.
One of their big roles nowadays is welfare be it post-quake, postfloods and post-adverse weather conditions, both here and abroad.
The New Zealand arm of the Red Cross supports the Pacific Rim,
which has experienced thirteen cyclones in the last twelve months. As preparedness for this, they have eighty containers prepositioned around the Pacific Rim so they can be on the ground giving out humanitarian aid almost immediately. What can we do to help this so very worthwhile charity? We can help with fundraising; we can support the Red Cross shops by volunteering our time or by donating good quality clothes, bedding and other useful items. We can volunteer to help with Meals on Wheels, or we can leave a gift in our will.
Next month’s speaker will be Peter McCarthy, whose talk is titled, ‘Shackleton’s Disastrous Trip.’ This will take place on the first Friday of the month (July 7th), as the second Friday is the Matariki public holiday
Jacky Lawson, on behalf of Malvern U3A.

THE RETIREMENT VILLAGES ACT
The Retirement Commission is required to monitor the effects of the Retirement Villages Act 2003 (the Act), its Regulations, and the Retirement Villages Code of Practice 2008. This process is well underway following the release of a White Paper by the CFFC (Commission for Financial Capability – sometimes known as the industry’s ‘regulatory watchdog’). The White Paper recommended that a full policy review should be undertaken to analyse future trends, consider if protections are adequate and able to adapt to change and investigate different models. The common ‘license to occupy’ model has long been the dominant one and precedes the Act and Code, which were largely drafted with this model in mind. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development is now working with the retirement sector on reviewing the Retirement Villages Act. The purpose of the Act is to protect
the interests of residents and intending residents and to enable retirement villages to develop under a legal framework that is simple for residents and village operators to understand. The review is expected to consider whether or not the current legislation, associated Codes and Regulations remain fit for purpose to ensure:
1. Suitable protections for residents of retirement villages and intending residents.
2. A balance is struck between the responsibilities and rights of the residents and the operations of the retirement villages.
3. The future viability of the retirement village sector and its ability to provide a range of retirement housing options. The review isn’t limited to existing and intending residents. It is expected the review will consider the rights of exiting residents. The assistance we offer to exiting residents and their families is no less
important. We expect the review to consider minimum standards concerning the termination of weekly fees once the dwelling is vacant, the resale and return to the resident of the capital and the treatment of the deferred management fee and capital gains and losses.
It has been almost twenty years since a review of the Act was undertaken. We consider this timely and look forward to the discussion paper, which should be released in September. We are passionate about this area of the law, with many existing, intending and exiting resident clients. Get in contact if we can be of any assistance to you.

To the Editor:
It has come to my attention that concerns have arisen around a survey that was letterbox dropped in the Sheffield Waddington community. This survey was to be deposited in a box at the Sheffield Pie Shop or alternatively emailed to me. The survey was intended to engage the community in a process that is happening.
On the 14th of December 2022, Council decided to discharge community committees of Council as of 30th June 2023. Such information was relayed to these committees. Since Sheffield Waddington hadn’t found a way forward, I enquired as to how the Township Committee wanted to move forward. Their answer was to hold a public meeting. I know there are many in our community that aren’t engaged in this process, and I wished to inform the community what was
The information gathered is now effectively useless due to tampering, so I am sorry to have wasted your time.
The survey was not to form a final decision. It was an informal information gathering process. A public meeting was to be held following.
Due to the public slander campaign and comments written on the surveys personally directed towards me - I will be stepping away from this process. The Community Board will hold a public meeting, where I hope you attend to voice your thoughts on the way forward for Sheffield and Waddington.

TIME OUT TOUR
TV presenter turned sheep and beef farmer, Matt Chisholm, is bringing his ‘Time Out Tour’ to Darfield High School on Wednesday, July 5th, 2023, in his role as Ambassador for the Rural Support Trust.
Matt signed on as the Trust’s inaugural Ambassador in 2022 and has been on a nationwide tour talking about mental wellness and resilience. So far, he has visited twenty nine rural communities and connected with more than 3,900 people. He has openly shared his mental health struggles and, through the tour, has been talking about his personal experiences and how he found a way through.
Matt started the tour in Southland and Stewart Island in June 2022, then headed to the Bay of Plenty, Top of the South, Gisborne, Ashburton, Otago and Taranaki. 2023 has seen him travel to Waikato, Omihi and recently headed to the top of the North Island.
Mike Green , Chair of the Taranaki Rural Support Trust and National Council said, "Matt’s role as our Ambassador is about remaining mentally resilient through tough times. We’ve partnered with him because he has an important message to share with rural people, to give hope that there is a way through whatever difficulties individuals and families may be facing.”
Feedback from those who attended the ‘Time Out Tour’ events across the country has been overwhelmingly positive.
“We are seeing evidence that Matt’s tour is helping. After each event, people are reaching out to the Rural Support Trust and other like-minded organisations for support. As Matt tours other parts of the country, we hope more people are inspired and feel confident about reaching out for help,” Mike concluded.
Matt’s battles are documented in ‘Imposter’, a book he published in 2021 and documentaries ‘Like a Man’ and ‘Man Enough’, both supported by the Mental Health Foundation. Matt commented, “My key message to anyone struggling with such pressure was to ask for help. Instead of having a conversation with yourself, go and talk to someone. Take that first step and life will change. Life can be infinitely greater than what it feels like now. Often the best of times come after the worst of times.”
Doors open at 6.30pm, with a fantastic raffle on offer not to be missed.
The programme begins at 7pm followed by a light supper.

OPEN FOR ARCHERS
The journey isn’t over, but great progress has been made so far at the Selwyn Archery Society. In July 2022, a few strangers held a casual meeting at the Darfield Shooting Club on Creyke Road. Some of the attendees had been firing arrows for years, and some had never held a bow. Fast forward to June 2023, and now
an associated society has been formed with multiple paid up members. Casual rates are available.
There are facilities for archers who already have their own bows, and the Group are working towards getting bows and equipment in the future to help introduce new archers to the sport. Once this facility is available there will be an update in the Malvern News.
Whether you are interested in archery for sport or hunting, whether you want to use a traditional long bow, recurve bow, or a modern compound bow, the Group welcomes you. If you don’t have any equipment, don’t worry!
The Society is fortunate that one of its founding members (Matt D’ath) has an archery shop in Darfield. Matt is an accomplished hunter and target shooter, and
can fit you out with the right kit to start your archery journey. Currently, the Group have a large outside area allowing people to get used to shooting at a distance, and they are rapidly adding to their indoor targets, for use in the 25m indoor range. They aim to allow continued archery throughout the winter months.
There’s never been a better time to practice archery in the Selwyn District!
If you are interested in joining the Society on this journey, visit their website to join.

LIFE AFTER 50
During check-in at the airport for a non-stop long-haul flight, the airline staff were very apologe c to the husband and said, “We are very sorry sir, the flight is really full today. We couldn’t manage to get you and your wife seats together. Your seat number is 14A and your wife is to seated in 42H”. The husband replied “Oh, wow, thanks! Do I have to pay anything extra for that to you for this favour?”
“No sir, your wife has already paid!”
I keep my mind sharp by regularly asking myself really tough ques ons like: “What happened yesterday?” and “What was I planning on doing just now?”
