ISSUE 1,089

Friday 9th June 2023

In April, Richard Fernando (President Canterbury Ultimate) contacted Pip Deans (Darfield High School Sports Coordinator) to invite DHS student Rachel Mckenzie, to be a part of the New Zealand Youth Ultimate (Frisbee) Championships (NZYUC) held at St Peter’s College, Cambridge, on April 22nd and 23rd.

The NZYUC is an event open to all youth players (born in 2005 or later) in New Zealand, offering them an opportunity to experience Ultimate Frisbee at a higher level than generally available in local school leagues.

team, providing a great development opportunity for players. It is a weekend for keen young Ultimate players to test their skills against the best in New Zealand in a fun and encouraging environment. The weekend also doubled as the key selection event for the New Zealand Junior National Training Squads, which were named after the tournament. The Squads compete against Australia on a bi-annual basis (in 2023, New Zealand will travel to Australia to compete) and will prepare to compete at the next World Junior Ultimate Championships in 2024. Over one hundred and thirty athletes were on the fields at St Peter’s College, and eighty one were offered a position on the National Training Squad, including Rachel.

New Zealand Ultimate runs a biannual Under 20 National Training Squad programme to develop players’ skills and abilities. Through participation in the National Training Squad programme, players also grow in leadership abilities, allowing them to become leaders in their own Ultimate communities. After viewing performances at

the 2023 New Zealand Secondary School Ultimate Championships, the 2023 New Zealand Youth Ultimate Championships and other local and regional events, the NZU U20 Selection Panels selected a National Training Squad of both boys and girls in the Under 20 age group.

Players enter individually and are placed into teams based on experience ensuring the teams are fairly even. These teams compete for the NZYUC Trophy. Top coaches from around the country are assigned to each Rachelinaction.

The players take part in several training camps, with teams from this squad selected to compete at the 2023 Under 20 TransTasman Test Series against Australia (or the 2023 AsiaOceania U20 Tri-Series if Japan attends) in Sydney in October, and the 2024 World Junior Ultimate Championships in 2024 (details have not been announced, but is likely to be in July/August 2024, in Europe).

Rachel got into sports in Year 6 after being dared to play rugby for a season. At the end of the

season, she realised rugby wasn’t for her, but she still wanted to play a sport, so tried netball. “I have continued with netball ever since as I find that it’s a challenging but fun sport. I got into Ultimate Frisbee in Year 8 through the Koru Games, where my team placed second. After the Koru Games, I started playing in the Term 1 and 4 school Ultimate League competitions and played with the Junior Mixed team until Year 9 when I joined the Senior team, which I have played in ever since. I have also played with the

Senior Ultimate team in the South Island Secondary School Frisbee tournament,” commented Rachel.

Rachel has had numerous sporting and academic successes and thoroughly enjoys sport. She would like to have a career as a professional Ultimate player or Netballer and be a Sports Physiotherapist when not playing.

“I want to pursue either code as I am highly passionate about both, and I currently cannot choose between them,” Rachel concluded.

VEHICLE PREPARATION

Is your vehicle winter ready?

Now that the cold, wet and icy months are here, it is time for motorists to make sure their vehicles are well prepared to handle the more challenging road conditions. It is important to plan ahead, stay alert, slow down and drop back. Some of the easiest ways to make sure your vehicle is fit for winter weather include getting it serviced, having a current Warrant of Fitness (WOF), and replacing tyres or windscreen wiper blades if needed. This will help make sure all your lights

(including fog lights) and brakes are working as they should, your fluid levels (including antifreeze) are correct, and that your battery is able to handle the colder weather which can drain them faster.

If you live in or are visiting an alpine area or somewhere prone to snowfall, consider fitting snow chains on your tyres. It is also a good time to check the condition of your vehicle’s spare tyre and that it is inflated. Keep an emergency kit in your car that includes a torch, bottled water, long-life food, a warm

blanket and jumper cables. If you don’t have a mobile phone charger in your car already, consider getting one. People can also keep an ice scraper in their car for when the windscreen is coated in ice. Remember not to pour boiling water onto the windscreen as it may crack or shatter.

No matter how close your destination is, try to always have at least half a tank of fuel in your vehicle in case there is a weather or accident-related detour along the route you are driving. Taking the time to check your car is ready for winter will help keep yourself and other road users safe.

For more information about driving safe in winter, visit: www.selwyn.govt.nz/ winterdriving or see advertisement in this issue for more details.

A PILGRIMAGE TO LOCAL CHURCH

On Wednesday, May 31st, Reverend Loyal Gibson, who is in his ninety sixth year, visited Greendale Church, where he was the Methodist Minister from 1955 to 1960. During that time, the new Church was built, and Loyal designed the beautiful glass window in the Church depicting the landscape of the Greendale area.

It was a visit to the service to remember and recognise a special person bringing back many memories for those who attended.

Aunty Lyn, the current Minister, welcomed Loyal and his family, son Mark and daughter Dawn, and Loyal shared some memories from his time stationed in Greendale. At that time, there was the general store, public hall, sports ground domain and three churches. Each Sunday in Greendale, there were five services of worship – all reasonably attended. The Baptists and Methodists had two, morning and evening, and the Presbyterians held one in the morning. His circuit consisted of

seven preaching places. Some Sundays he travelled 100kms, much of it on gravel roads , to Greendale, Darfield, Te Pirita, Glenroy, Whitecliffs, Hororata, Aylesbury and occasionally Arthur’s Pass. At Aylesbury, they met in the old school building, squatting at juvenile desks. This service was discontinued soon after his arrival. Ninety percent or more of the Methodist people were landowners or farm

workers. During his five years, he conducted six hundred and fifty Sunday services, though some sermons were used several times!

Some of his ‘naughty’ past Bible Class members, now in their late seventies and early eighties, attended the service and shared their memories of Loyal’s time in Greendale, along with present and past Greendale families. Ian Warren.

DARFIELD GUN CLUB UPDATE

Twenty two shooters, including Sophie and Brooke from Toowoomba on a flying visit, enjoyed the June 4th shoot at Darfield Gun Club. It was a nottoo-inclement start to the day, with a light northerly but heavy cloud, so was a bit dull. The EyeOpener was very testing with just the one possible(25/25) in A Grade, by Scott Turner and three 24’s. B Grade top score was 24, and C Grade was 20. Unfortunately, this was the end of the good conditions as the southerly started to blow strongly.

The Side by Side shoot was a bit of a lottery, with Trap Two easier to score on than Trap One. All three grades were won on Trap Two.

Once again, the ten pair Deauville Doubles, with drawn pairs, produced some excellent shooting, with three pairs shooting 19/20. Ross Turner and Dave Folley (Mr Smooth) were the first to qualify, although they were quickly joined by Danniell Williams and Rupert Wright and lastly by Brodie

The first two pairs in the ShootOff had the occasional spot of rain, and despite a good start, Ross and Dave struggled, dropping several targets. Danniell and Rupert shot better, dropping just two targets, which left a small window of opportunity for Brodie and Bevan. Some good shooting saw them finish with 19 once again to win the Trophy.

Many thanks also to Marcel VanLeeuwen for sponsoring the

shoot and to all the helpers for their efforts.

The next shoot will be held on Sunday, July 2nd, at 12:30pm. Everyone is welcome.

PLANNING PERMISSIONS

ResourceConsentorPlan Change?

Are you looking to undertake a subdivision or development that is not permitted under your local District Plan? Depending on the scale of your proposal, and the extent of any non-compliances with respect to the District Plan, then you may require one of two permissions from the Council; a resource consent or a private plan change.

A resource consent is a formal approval granted by Council for subdivisions, specific activities or when proposed buildings and activities do not comply with rules listed in the District Plan. Obtaining a resource consent allows you to build, use, or subdivide land in accordance with the conditions of consent. These conditions ensure that any actual or potential effects on

the environment are avoided, remedied or mitigated. Typically, a five-year lapse period is placed on all resource consents; if not given effect within this time, then the resource consent lapses and can no longer be used. Though a resource consent is the most common form of approval given under the Resource Management Act, is it really the right choice for you? The answer to this question is not necessarily straight forward, as there are several variables to consider. For example, if the site in question was rural and the intended future use was to transform the site into a commercial hub or small residential suburb, it can be assumed that this proposal is highly contradictory to the intended use of the site. Such expectations are anticipated and enforced through applicable provisions of the District Plan. A privately initiated plan change

seeks to introduce provisions or make changes to any existing provisions in a District Plan. Such changes can include but are not limited to: the re-zoning of land; adding or removing an item to a heritage list; amending rules regarding building design controls; amending rules or standards which are out of date, etc. Undertaking a private plan change will of course have private benefits, however, there are usually public benefits that improve the community in some way (greater choice in housing typologies, economic development opportunities etc). An application for a privately initiated plan change will require a significant volume of information and expert reports to support the proposal, which can also increase the cost. However, this option is also a long-term solution that can have flow-on benefits. Navigating which is the best option for you and which process is most likely to be approved by the Council can be a difficult decision to make as there are various components to consider, as outlined above. A land development expert, such as a planner, can provide you with advice based on their expert body of knowledge, local expertise, and awareness of central and local government decisions, including relevant case law. It is therefore strongly recommended that you engage a planner to determine if a plan change or a resource consent is right for you.

LOOKING FOR

VOLUNTEER PLANTING DAYS

Join ECan’s ranger and biodiversity teams on one of their epic tree planting days alongside the Waimakariri River. Did you know that native vegetation covers just 0.5 percent of the Canterbury lowland plains? ECan aims to increase this a little by planting 8,500 trees this season.

Native planting provides a wide range of benefits including increasing native biodiversity, creating habitat for native wildlife (insects, reptiles and birds), stabilising soil, recreating ecological corridors, enhancing water quality and landscapes and providing a sense of place on our rivers.

Planting Venues:

• The Sanctuary Wetland is the largest and broadest remaining lowland freshwater complex of floodplain, backswamp, swamp forest and spring-fed stream on the Lower Waimakariri River. Due to its regional significance, it has been

identified as a priority area for wetland enhancement within the Lower Waimakariri Regional Park. More than forty native plant species have been observed here along with healthy populations of various native birds.

A significant portion of the site represent precursors of kahikatea (Dacrycarpus dacrydioides) forest of which the only remaining example on the Canterbury Plains is found at Riccarton Bush. Restoration of a kahikatea swamp forest is an important part of the overall landscape management for sustaining and enhancing this ecosystem across the north Canterbury Plains.

• Rock Spur/Lorimas is located on the south bank of the Waimakariri River slightly downstream of The Sanctuary Wetland. The area contains over forty remnant kōwhai trees amongst many other species such as karamu, tī

kōuka, tutu and harakeke. There is a large shingle braid which is used by braided river birds for breeding. Banded dotterels (Charadrius bicinctus) especially, seem to like the area but also black-fronted tern (Sterna albostriata) and wrybill/ngutuparore (Anarhynchus frontalis) have been returning to breed. Restoration in this area seeks to restore the local ecosystem, improve habitat for the local fauna and continue the native corridor consistent with the Ngāi Tahu concept of Ki Uta Ki Tai which seeks to manage our lands holistically from the mountains to the sea.

NEW HUB TO HELP SELWYN YOUTH

A new Youth Hub for Selwyn is holding their Opening Day on June 24th from 3pm until 6pm. The hub will have a range of services and supports to help young people in the district thrive.

The Hub, based at the Rolleston Community Centre, will provide rangatahi youth aged twelve to twenty four years old, a space to receive targeted programmes and non-judgmental confidential youth services from qualified agencies.

Te Tahi Youth and Family Planning will deliver health services, counselling and career advice and Alternative Education will have education services in the hub.

A range of providers will also run activities, events and courses including parenting and youth courses, learner driver courses, drug and alcohol counselling

sessions, arts classes, te reo Māori classes and waiata sessions.

The Hub idea and services confirmed were based on needs identified by Selwyn young people and principals at the four Selwyn high schools.

“With one of the youngest populations in New Zealand, supporting our youth is a key part of serving our community.

Talking to them, the needs were clear, there were fantastic services available and we had the space so it was a perfect opportunity to bring it together,” commented Council Group Manager Community and Facilities Denise Kidd

Te Tahi Youth has expanded its successful Christchurch services to Selwyn this year, providing a health nurse at Rolleston College and a youth worker who will both join the hub.

Founder, Dame Sue Bagshaw said, “It follows a similar model to the hub it runs in Christchurch and is a good fit for young people.

“The nurse is busy, young people are finding us and it works well. When you look at the barriers to care for young people first is cost, second is not knowing where to go and third is services not being accessible. If we can put as many services in there as possible, it will help make it a place where young people can find health care, but also youth development activities, and a place where they can learn to relate, make connections and have caring in their lives,” Sue concluded.

Any youth services or community groups looking to run services from the hub are invited to email Christine.Lane@selwyn.govt.nz

A teacher gave her class of second graders a lesson on the magnet and what it does.

The next day in a written test, she included this question: "My full name has six letters. The first one is M. I am strong and attractive. I pick up things. What am I?"

When the test papers were turned in, the teacher was astonished to find that almost 50 percent of the students answered the question with the word "Mother."
