ISSUE 1,085 - FRIDAY 12TH MAY 2023

Coronation celebrations were happening all around the world last weekend, including various activities in the Malvern area. It was great to see the Hororata community spirit alive and kicking on Saturday, May 6th. Three ladies, Sharon Huck, Sheena Broughton and Aimee

Theobald brought their idea of having a community event that was low key and would bring people together alive. So, the ‘Hororata Coronation Community Picnic’ was organised with the emphasis on ‘getting to know your neighbourhood’. The picnic was held at Hororata Domain on the day of King Charles III's Coronation.

The event was a great success, with people from around the community coming together, sharing afternoon high tea and getting to know each other. Special thanks goes to Sam Adkins , from Sammy’s Rust and Custom for bringing the fantastic Noddy Train and Alice Wright, from Cheap Bouncy Castle Hire Canterbury, for the super fun bouncy castle, both donating their time and equipment for all the kids, young and old to enjoy. One of the royal corgis turned up bearing scones, jam and cream, and we must thank Sarah Barrett from Hororata Cafe and Bar for allowing the corgi to attend.

Selwyn District Council have donated a tree to be planted at a later date and a plaque to commemorate the Coronation. It was agreed that everyone had a

‘jolly good time’. Watch this space for the tree planting ceremony details.

Aimee Theobald, Co- organiser.

FELTME SLIPPERS

Wool is one of the world's oldest, most sustainable and renewable fibres in the world. With New Zealand having proudly produced wool for many generations and herself being a sheep farmer, Nicolle Hughes was frustrated with the limited choices of wool slippers and products. Feltme was started after Nicolle began researching and procuring beautiful wool slippers. Feltme Slippers are 100% Handmade Merino Wool Slippers that come in a range of twelve colours and unisex sizes, making them a perfect pair for all people.

Nicolle, alongside her husband Kyle and their three children, Fraser (9), Hadley (7) and Cate (5) farm sheep and beef just outside of Glentunnel. Wool is now sadly no longer a viable income stream for them and most other farmers. This has made many farmers and producers look at other ways to utilise wool and try to reinvigorate the passion for using this amazing fibre.

“I love wool, and it's such a shame that we don't use it more in our everyday lives like in the past. It would be great to see people fall in love with wool again and enjoy its amazing benefits,” commented Nicolle.

The wool for the slippers is currently purchased on the international market, felted in one of the oldest factories in Germany and finally lovingly handmade in Slovenia. Feltme Slippers mold to your feet, have a nonslip natural leather sole, non-odorous and temperature regulating, they are proving very popular with customers. The fun

bright colour range is a nice change from the perceived view of wool is boring.

With new products being designed, Nicolle is looking forward to expanding the range and continuing to promote wool. The whole range of slippers will be available to view and purchase at the upcoming Hororata Glow Festival, stall #54 or check out www.feltme.co.nz

with free local delivery available. See advertisement alongside.

GARDEN CLUB CELEBRATES

The Sheffield Garden Club recently celebrated its 70th Jubilee in fine style with a beautifully executed high afternoon tea. The tables were suitably adorned with white linen, delicate floral china, silverware, floral centrepieces, and tiered cake plates with a delicious assortment of sweet delights and savoury bites. The result was a picture of elegance and a fun afternoon of friendship and sharing of memories. Past president Peter Williams offered toasts to absent friends and to the Coronation of King Charles with wine donated by Sherwood Estate Wines. Patrons Frances Smith and Judith EarlWilliams cut the celebratory cake, made and donated by Rosie George. Guest speaker Louise Deans talked about early tree planting in the Malvern district which was followed by afternoon tea, where guests were served tea or coffee by table hosts and hostesses. The day wound up with reminisces of the early days of the Club from long serving members; Judith Earl-Williams, Frances Smith, Janet Cullen and Margaret

Holliday. Guests could also participate in formal photo sessions or a fun game of flowerpot toss.

Sheffield Garden Club President Fi Maddison said, “The afternoon was a delightful way to acknowledge the Club’s

lengthy presence and dedication to gardening in the area. The Club looks forward to the future and welcomes new members to their meetings held on the first Tuesday of the month at 1.30pm at St Ambrose Church Hall, Sheffield.

LET’S GLOW CRAZY

The fourth Hororata Glow Festival is being held on Saturday, May 13th, at the Hororata Domain.

This community led event is sold out with 11,000 people booked to attend. This is the only festival of its kind in the South Island.

Hot air balloons are travelling from all around New Zealand and Buster the Bulldog balloon has landed from the UK! In days leading up to the event ten visiting balloonists will take to the skies with Ballooning Canterbury. They will then be the main attraction in the centre of the Hororata Glow Festival as they perform a choreographed ‘Night Glow’.

While the hot air balloons are the centre attraction the magical festival surrounding their performance is set to wow the young and young at heart. Glowing performers are practicing, University of Canterbury are preparing their interactive science

demonstrations, Capitol City and Bad Revivals bands are polishing their set lists, stalls holders are busy organising their products and one hundred and thirty volunteers are busy setting up to welcome everyone to our community!

This is a community run event staged by the Hororata Community Trust in association with Ballooning Canterbury.

“The Hororata Glow Festival is

put on by our community, to benefit our community. The support has been amazing and humbling, people have really got behind us. We were blown away to be sold out a week before the event. It is exciting to be able to host such a unique event in Hororata, this is like nothing else. We can’t wait to glow with everyone,” said Hororata Community Trust Executive Officer Cindy Driscoll .

DC INSTALLATION SERVICES

As temperatures drop and winter approaches, we’re all looking for ways to heat our home efficiently without spending a fortune on energy bills. This is where a ducted central heat pump system comes in.

The Mitsubishi Electric ducted heat pump system is an excellent choice for those looking to achieve whole-home comfort with energy-saving efficiency. Maintain consistent temperatures in your home throughout the entire year by simply selecting your preferred temperature in each area and let the advanced features of the system take care of the rest. You’ll have the flexibility of having total control over the comfort of your home.

By setting specific temperatures for each area of your home, you can keep bedrooms set to your perfect sleeping temperature while providing cosy comfort in the living areas. Additionally, ducted systems are incredibly discreet, with the main operating unit hidden in the ceiling, resulting in an exceptionally quiet operation.

To further increase energy

savings and provide much needed ventilation to your home, integrate your ducted heat pump system with Lossnay fresh air ventilation.

Lossnay is essential for maintaining good air quality and removes stale air, allergens and pollutants linked to headaches and allergies. Proper ventilation will also control moisture to prevent crying windows and the growth of mould and mildew in your home. Lossnay also keeps the energy bills low as it recovers energy from the stale air within your home to pre-heat or pre-cool incoming fresh air, reducing the amount of

additional heating or cooling required.

If you’re looking to achieve whole-home comfort, give the team at DC Installation Services a call for your free in-home consultation. Their team of experts will assess your home and recommend the best heating solution based on your specific requirements. They are Canterbury’s residential heat pump specialists.

CHECK THE RULES

The most important rule to remember when burning outdoors is that if your property is under two hectares (20,000 square metres), you can’t burn outdoors, even if you live in a rural area.

If your property is over two hectares, you can burn dry waste material from your property and a neighbour's property, but smoke must not cause a nuisance beyond your property boundary or be blown towards a township. If you live in a Clean Air Zone, you may only burn between 1st September and 30th April.

Before lighting any fires, visit checkitsalright.nz to find out whether your area is in an open, restricted or prohibited fire season and what you should do to keep yourself and others safe. No matter how large your property is, you must not burn rubbish. Burning rubbish causes toxic chemicals to be released into the air and creates a health hazard as well as a nuisance for you and your neighbours.

Materials that must not be burned in Canterbury include:

• plastic

• metals

• batteries

• painted or treated wood

• rubber

• coated wire

• oil

• chemicals

• tar and bitumen

• materials containing asbestos

• containers that have stored hazardous materials. Plastic and wood can be disposed of with general rubbish, but batteries, paint and hazardous materials need to be taken to a transfer station.

Visit your local council's website to find out how to sort your waste and the location of your nearest transfer stations. Around this time of year, ECan receive many complaints about outdoor burning. Callers describe how they have to stay indoors to escape the 'putrid', 'toxic' or 'chemical-smelling' smoke. Some people experience watery eyes, itchy throats and asthma

symptoms because of the smoke, while others are annoyed that their washing smells smoky or that their backyard gets covered with ash.

To avoid complaints from your neighbours or a visit from one of ECan’s incident response officers, get familiar with the outdoor burning rules and consider alternatives to burning.

Consider smoke-free alternatives for dealing with your green waste. Garden waste can go in the green bin or the compost. Grass clippings and leaves can also be used as mulch in the garden.

Whether you prefer a barbecue, pizza oven, hāngī or umu, you can cook outdoors as long as the smoke is not offensive or objectionable beyond your property boundary.

If smoke from outdoor burning is causing a nuisance for you, call ECan on 0800 765 588 (24 hours) or use the Snap Send Solve app to report an issue from your mobile phone.

NICOLA GRIGG - OPINION PIECE

It’s been a busy few weeks in and around Selwyn. Parliament has been in recess so I've been able to spend more time in the electorate than usual - this means I've been able to hold eight coffee meetings at cafes around the district, host a pub politics night in Dunsandel, attended four Anzac Day services, speak to the Rolleston Central Probus group, collect for the Templeton RSA on Poppy Day, as well as meet with dozens of constituents in my office. I have also knocked on hundreds of doors in different towns and delivered thousands of fliers - all to try and make myself as accessible as possible to our community.

There have also been several key policy announcements from the National Party - we're aiming to tackle the issues that matter to New Zealanders.

As we all know, New Zealand’s health system is in crisis, with a severe shortage of nurses and midwives contributing to

ballooning waitlists, delays accessing treatment and dangerously overcrowded emergency departmentssomething we are particularly vulnerable to here in Canterbury.

Rural healthcare is in desperate need of more resourcing, as I’m sure many of you have experienced first-hand.

New Zealand does not train enough nurses or midwives to address this shortage, and the ones we do train are being aggressively recruited to move overseas.

Recently, Dr Shane Reti announced our plan to deliver more nurses and midwives into the health workforce. Under National, the Government will pay nurses’ and midwives’ student loan repayments up to $4,500 a year for the first five years of their career. This means that a nurse, or midwife would be $22,500 better off over five years, and incentivise them to stay working in New Zealand after graduating.

National will also make New Zealand more competitive in the global competition for skilled workers, by allowing qualified overseas nurses and midwives to come here on a six-month temporary visa without a job offer to look for work and to bring their immediate family members with them.

We have also announced that we will help deliver faster access to mental health services for vulnerable New Zealanders by boosting community providers and NGOs. Our policy, named the Mental Health Innovation Fund, will increase access to mental health and addiction support and power up charitable organisations that are delivering positive outcomes for New Zealanders where the Government is failing.

We believe that rather than trying to run everything from Wellington, this fund will deliver more resources to the frontline by scaling up NGOs and community providers - such as Gumboot Friday - who are delivering better mental health outcomes, faster and more efficiently than the Government. This $20 million investment could deliver the equivalent of more than 130,000 additional free counselling sessions over four years.

If we can form a Government, National has committed to increasing health funding in line with inflation. We will also cut Labour's wasteful spending on contractors and consultants by $400 million a year in order to fund these vital frontline services.
