Darfield is known for its picturesque views and friendly locals, and it also has another reason to be popular, Darfield Pizza and Darfield Kebab and Souvlaki. This reasonably new food joint has caused quite a stir with its mouth-watering dishes and inviting atmosphere.

With a deep love for great cuisine, Darfield Pizza was brought to life by the entrepreneurial spirit of Narinder Singh Warraich . Alongside his brother, a skilled chef with experience in a reputable Italian restaurant, they opened their first pizza store in Amberley, in 2018. Due to the positive community response, they decided to expand and in 2021 opened another store in Darfield. Despite the

challenges posed by the Covid19 pandemic, Darfield Pizza has quickly established itself as a goto destination for foodies in our town. Their pizzas are made from scratch with the freshest ingredients.

Narinder realised that the town needed more food options, and people had to travel to Hornby or Christchurch City for a kebab or souvlaki. He accepted the challenge, opened up Darfield Kebab and Souvlaki, hired a trained chef and provided staff training for this new venture. The food is grilled to perfection with Mediterranean spices that will transport you to the coast of Greece. Narinder still spends a few hours every week in both stores and tries to get people's views about food so he can continue improving.

The Vintage Car Club’s annual Malvern Anzac Day Run held on April 25th, was once again wonderfully successful. Forty entrant’s enjoyed a beautiful Autumn day touring the Malvern district as their way of celebrating Anzac Day and paying tribute to those who served and fell during the great wars of last century.

“It was a great way to pay tribute whilst enjoying our vehicles,” commented one of the organisers, Colin Hey from West Melton.

The weather couldn’t have been better, with a calm, clear and sunny day. Of the forty entrants, a total of fifteen pre-1918 vehicles took part, including a 1900 Wolseley and a 1914 Talbot, which travelled from Dunedin to take part. There were also a very high number of pre1945 vehicles, including Jeremy Wise participating in his first Run in a recently purchased and impressive 1924 Cadillac V63 Tourer.

The day began with a public display at the Darfield Recreation Centre, with many local residents attending. Before departing, the Last Post was played, and then the Ode of Remembrance was recited by the Chairman of the Darfield RSA,

Terry Hutchison. The cars were then flagged away by Mayor Sam Broughton . The Run followed the now traditional route, stopping at the memorials in Sheffield, Coalgate, Hororata and Glenroy, before finishing for a picnic lunch at the Glentunnel Community Centre. Many locals were out watching the cars pass by along the way and at the

finish to chat with those participating in the event.

All up, it was a very special day out and a good fundraising event for the RSA. The organisers would like to thank the many local businesses that supported the event, especially Auto Restorations and Birchfield Energy and Resources.

ANNUAL CAREERS EXPO

Darfield High School (DHS) will host their annual DHS Careers Expo on Tuesday, May 9th, 2023, featuring more than twenty five tertiary education and vocational providers. There are some exciting new providers, offering a variety of learning and vocational opportunities, that will encourage students to broaden their horizons. It is designed to make them think beyond the obvious, about their futures and how they can gain experience, qualifications and scholarships, as well as insight into subject choice later this year.

The School has decided to continue with the event despite the Canterbury PPTA strike, as providers are attending from all over New Zealand. DHS understands the value of having access to these service providers,

so have made the event open to the entire community. Whether you are considering leaving school or a career change, the providers will appreciate the opportunity to meet with you. Students, whānau and members of the community are encouraged to attend but to leave once finished, as there will be limited staff on site. DHS wishes to thank their providers for the continued support of both their event and

students. Please ‘like’ their Darfield High School Facebook page to keep up to date with the latest information and news.

You can also email the career team on careersadvisor@darfield.school.nz

For anyone that is unable to attend the DHS Careers Expo, the Christchurch Careers Expo runs from the 11th - 13th May.

AQUARIAN HEALING

The birth of my daughter Sara was extremely painful so I was injected with an epidural. The hospital staff forgot to drain the epidural, so I (Robin Rodgers ) was crippled, unable to walk and in extreme pain twenty four hours a day for three years after the birth. Doctors predicted I would spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair.

I was furious at being left in debilitating pain, which did not respond to whatever painkillers were prescribed. In the Dunedin Hospital Pain Clinic, very strong addictive painkillers were prescribed that made no difference to my level of pain. Others in the Pain Clinic mentioned they had tried Reiki to relieve pain with some success, so I gave it a go. Reiki

helped leading me to become a Reiki Master and studied at least twenty five different healing modalities, Hemaview, muscle testing, meridian lines, detoxification, hypnotherapy, Seichin, Homeopathy and Acupuncture to name a few, leading to me creating, ‘Aquarian Healing’.

Aquarian Healing helped to relieve my pain levels and to walk, unaided, though not for long distances.

I have treated patients with Aquarian Healing for thirty years, paid off my house, travelled and taught Aquarian Healing widely in Europe, Asia, America, England, Norway and Australia. Aquarian Healing is registered as a healing modality by the New Zealand Government, and I am a

Registered Medical Practitioner here in New Zealand.

I have demonstrated Aquarian Healing in Norway, Austria, Germany, Australia and England. In 2003, I was invited to be a guest speaker at the World Conference of Spiritual, Parapsychological and Medical Healers in Basle, Switzerland. After my demonstration, I received a standing ovation. I have clients in the United States, Australia, England and several throughout New Zealand. Occasionally I also run courses to train parties interested in my modality.

Darfield High School (DHS) recently competed in the SISS Adventure Race at Kaikoura, fielding eight teams across the various grades with some great results.

Adventure racing is a great experience, teaching the key elements of resilience, teamwork, problem solving and time management, as well as being reasonably physically fit. It is also an activity that family teams can participate in.

DHS fielded a 12 hour team of Year 12 students who competed in the Schools Open Grade, starting at 7.30am in Waiau. They had to complete four mountain bike stages, two rogaines and a kayaking stage. It was a tough competition through some rugged country, and although they didn't manage to finish before the cut-off time of 10pm (bike and navigational challenges) they nevertheless enjoyed themselves.

The seven other teams participated in the 3 hour event, in different grades due to age, gender and number of team

members. All teams started and finished at Conroy Flat. For most, this was their first Adventure Race so it was a mixture of excitement and nervousness on the start line, not just for the teams but also the parents sending their children out into the unknown with some food, a bike, three maps and a compass. The course was extremely wet and very muddy, which was a challenge in itself.

All teams completed their challenges within the time allowed with great results for their grades. Everyone was still smiling as they came across the finish line, covered in mud and with some great stories to tell about their adventures.

Thanks to all the parents and families, leading up to the event and over the weekend, it was great to see so many supporters there cheering the teams on.

Lastly, thank you to the Kaikoura Adventure Racing Team for such a well organised and fun event. Pip Deans, DHS Sports Coordinator.

NZ SHOOTING REPRESENTATIVE

Year 13 Darfield High School student, Ryan Booth, has qualified to represent New Zealand at the Junior World Championship in 50m Prone Outdoor Smallbore Shooting. One of only four New Zealand Juniors to qualify this season, Ryan is off, in July, to Changwon in South Korea, to compete at this International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) event. This will be the first overseas competition for Ryan, who has only had three outdoor shooting seasons. To qualify for the ISSF Junior World Championship, you need to shoot at qualifying competitions held around the country and shoot two qualifying scores of 604.2 or above for Junior Men. Ryan competed at four competitions and qualified at all four matches.

Ryan's scores were: 609.8 at Canterbury Championships, 612.5 at Outdoor Nationals, 609.7 at Marlborough Championships and 619.7 at the South Island Championships. The theoretical maximum score is 654.0, which is 60 perfect bulls eyes.

Ryan will be one of two competitors travelling from New Zealand, which is both exciting and daunting. As one of New Zealand’s top shooters, Shania Harrison-Lee , based in Christchurch, is the other team member and has already competed numerous times overseas. Ryan and Shania are club members at Canterbury Outdoor Target Shooting at

McLeans Island.

Ryan will be competing with 140 other Junior Men from around the world. Unfortunately, this year the mixed team match for prone has been taken out of the competition.

There will be updates on the ISSF website regarding the competition between the 14th25th of July.

SELWYN GETS FIRE SMART

In partnership with Spark New Zealand and Attentis, Selwyn District Council (SDC) is leading the way in its commitment to public safety, by installing new cutting-edge technology to help in the detection of fires in McHughs Forest Park, near Darfield. Recently there was an official launch and installation of three fire sensor poles that use a combination of thermal imaging, 360° cameras, and air quality technology to monitor environmental conditions and will notify emergency services if any sign of fire is detected. The data is also be made live to the public through the Council’s partnership with technology innovator Attentis. The app can be used to monitor real-time conditions in the forest, its walking trails and the popular fairy doors walk. A QR code is located on signage at McHughs Forest Park and will be shared via Selwyn District Council’s website.

Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton said, “The sensors are a great example of embracing new technology to improve the safety and enjoyment of the district. “It’s exciting to have this technology available for McHughs Forest and for what it could mean for the future of Selwyn. Having real-time, 24hour monitoring in place ready to alert emergency services is extremely important, but it’s also a great example of how we can embrace technology to help people explore and enjoy the district, safely,” Sam concluded.

The success of this partnership also depends on the critical collaboration with Fire and Emergency New Zealand, who are interested to learn how technology like this can help reduce the incidents and consequences of fire in our community. District Manager Dave Stackhouse said, “Fire and Emergency NZ has worked collaboratively with SDC on this project, and we congratulate them on using technology to help reduce the impact of fire on

our community.”

The sensors are self-powered and use a combination of artificial intelligence and Internet of Things (IoT) technology - a system of interrelated computers and machines that can transfer data across a network without needing people-to-people or people-to-computer interaction. All parties joined together to celebrate the launch of this new project, an important initiative for the district.

TM DANCE WORLD

Over the recent school holidays, the performance dancers of TM Dance World attended a couple of different competitions held

in Christchurch. The dancers competed in different styles of dance, including Jazz, Lyrical, Contemporary, Hip Hop Musical

Theatre, and thirty five dancers also took part in teams days. The studio had many wonderful results throughout both competitions, and we are very proud of all our dancers! The highlights were two of our trio performances being awarded first place!

At the JT Dancers competition held at Riccarton High Lily Payton , Jaida Banks and Neve Molloy won their Open Jazz trio in ‘Any dance style under nineteen years’. Jaida also received a special award, picked by the judges after the competition, for stage presence over twelve. These awards were special for the girls as this marks the thirteenth and final year of competing in this competition.

At the Christchurch Tap Dancer Teachers Association (CDTDA) competition held at Middleton Grange, Emily O'Reilly , Alyssa Collings and Eliza McIntyre also won first place for their Jazz Trio in the ‘novice twelve and over section’. Well done to all the TM Dancers who have made a fantastic start to the competition season!

Tara McKeown, TM Dance World, Director.

Pruning Berry Fruit Demonstration Workshop

We start the pruning season with a Demonstration Workshop on pruning berry fruit:

Not all berry fruit is pruned the same way. Come and learn how to prune black and red currants, cane berry fruit, grape vines, gooseberries and strawberries, so you will get a good crop of fruit next year. Bring garden gloves and secateurs.

GARDEN FOCUS FOR MAY:

Sow in autumn crops that will mature in spring and early summer:

• Broad beans: Can be sown as a cover crop or food crop

• Garlic

• Cauliflower: overwinter young plants for a head-start for early cauliflowers in spring

• Green manure cover crops: if you have empty garden beds, sow a cover crop to improve and protect the soil over the winter.

Start the garden tidy-up:

• Prune berries, cut back seeded perennials, weed and mulch

• Make compost

• Frost protect tender plants such as citrus and young stone fruit trees.

MALVERN LIONS ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

The Malvern Lions Annual Golf Tournament was held on Friday, April 28th, at Hororata Golf Course in Glentunnel.

The day was perfect for golf, and the picturesque course was, once again, in great order, with one hundred and twenty four players

taking part in the Ambrose competition.

Organisers commented that the day was a huge success and thanked everyone involved for their efforts.

This year's recipients were Malvern St John, with funds

going towards Defibrillators in the Malvern district. The funds will be used in three ways.

• Maintenance - servicing the existing ones in the community.

• Training - community/clubs, etc.

• Mobile Unit - spare unit for community events/ replacement when servicing existing units.

The Malvern St John did an outstanding job supplying food on the day, with a great variety and plenty to go around. The raffle table was also outstanding, with over $3,000 worth of prizes, and not many went home empty handed.

“A special thanks must go out to our sponsors, as we could not have achieved what we did without them,” commented Hamish Milner , Malvern Lions Golf Convener.

“We were able to do a

presentation to Malvern St John for $22,000 on the day,” Hamish concluded.

St John Area Chair for Selwyn, Ann Shepherd said, “St John has always appreciated the support the Malvern Lions have provided to our organisation. We are extremely grateful for this wonderful donation.

“Since 1951, there has been a St John presence in Malvern providing first aid for sporting events. In 1972, the Malvern Lions suggested that an ambulance would be a valuable asset for our community. In 1973, the Lions went further and offered to sponsor our first ambulance, and in 1975 we took delivery of an International

ambulance with $14,253 of the $17,500 cost being met by Malvern Lions. In its first year, that ambulance transported eight two patients, and that figure has now risen to over four hundred and fifty per year.

“Over the years the Lions has continued their support, $3,000 for ambulance equipment, $1,000 for garage extensions, $14,000 for state of the art Lifepak 300, $3,000 for a pulse oximeter, to name a few. The Lions have contributed so much to ensuring that our community members have the most up to date equipment to ensure the best treatment to aid in recovery,” concluded Ann.

that feature beautiful craftsmanship and attention to detail, resulting in an end product for both builder and client to be proud of.

Builder, Rod Boyd has over forty years of building experience, which really shows on the building site where no problem is unsolvable, and he is always dedicated to ensuring the level of workmanship is top notch. Rod began his career in the New Zealand Army where he served for ten years. This is where he gained his trade and advanced trade certificates. During that time, he worked on a range of varied projects, including the build of three Lockwood homes in the tropical conditions of Rarotonga, as well as a sixmonth project building an extension to Scott Base in the polar conditions at Antarctica. Over the years of RB Built’s operation, the company has created many homes for clients in the Selwyn District. Rod’s drive for high quality workmanship has seen him build up a trusted team of subcontractors that he works with on most jobs - selected for their professionalism and the same high quality of delivery that Rod works by.

Rod welcomes clients onsite at any stage of the process and enjoys their input throughout the build. This often results in clients being able to have creative input and Rod to craft some special bespoke features in their home. In fact, if you’re interested in the build process or just feeling super enthusiastic Rod will often supervise clients to be involved with tasks onsite - there’s nothing more satisfying than that feeling that you’ve helped in some small way to build your own home.

NZ UNDER 19 SQUAD

Recently, Cameron Paul has been selected into the New Zealand

Under 19 squad to play in the World Cup qualifiers in Australia during June. They will play a series of games in the hope of qualifying for the World Cup, in Sri Lanka, during 2024.

Cameron has come right through Canterbury Country Cricket Association’s age group set up, playing all his junior cricket at Darfield, where he still plays today. He represented Canterbury Country from Primary age up to the Senior side, which he debuted for last season. A quick bowler

who is more than handy with the bat, injuries have troubled him this season.
