Lucy Jenkins from West Melton has been named in the Black Ferns 2023 Contracted Squad, earlier this week.

Prior to this she was named the Sky Super Rugby Aupiki Champion 2023 Wahine of the Match, voted by commentators and received the Aoraki Award for the Matatū Player of the Year.

“Lucy played a pivotal role in our Championship season and has shown the world what an incredible player she is. We're very lucky to have her in Matatū Blue and congratulate her on her recent Black Fern Squad selection,” commented a spokesperson from the Club.

Lucy has also won five Farah Palmer Cup National Women’s titles over the past six years with Canterbury.

“I have been part of this team since I was sixteen years old. My Christchurch Club team has won the Premier Women’s division, five out of the seven years that I have played” commented Lucy.

Lucy is one of thirty four contracted players locked in for the Black Ferns as they set their sights on building toward the 2025 Rugby World Cup. Lucy secured her first full-time Black Ferns contract, after being a standout in the Sky Super Rugby Aupiki competition and now has the opportunity to further her growth at the next level. She will train at the Christchurch hub and receive technical, tactical and strength and conditioning programmes.

In addition, each player will have one day a week committed to their personal development, focussing on the areas of career/education and work, finance and asset protection, character development, mental wellness and other professional rugby obligations and expectations.

“I encourage any female, that is keen to pursue a career in rugby to just show up at a training and make the most of the outstanding environment,” concluded Lucy. We wish Lucy all the best for her future.

HELP US TO FIND YOU!

One of the tools commonly used by Emergency Services, to locate your address, is house numbers or if on a rural road, the Rapid number. These are two different things, but both are important. Each rural, residential address should have a Rapid number assigned to it by the District Council. It is a property identification number and is more than just the letterbox number. It should not be confused with a Fonterra, Synlait etc dairy shed number. It should be the number given to a courier, post, or more importantly, Emergency Services should they need to attend your address.

The Rapid number is supposed to be visible at the gateway of the drive leading to the residence on a property. It should be on the left hand side of the gateway attached to a post or most commonly on a blue plastic post in the ground. It will have a 4digit number in reflective lettering. It should be clear of anything that may obstruct its view, such as long grass, shrubs or structure. There is a convention for the numbering, so it is important that it is not just taken from the neighbours. The 4 digits are a measured distance from the start point of the road and represent 10’s of metres. Eg 0031 is the distance (310m) from the intersection where the road starts, like 1234 is 12.34km from the start of the road. Odd numbers are on one side of the road (left), and even numbers on the other, when viewed from the start end. If the odd number is on the right, it means you are travelling towards the start of the road, and the numbers will be getting smaller.

Some older Rapid posts may have 7 numbers (eg454 0246). If your address is like this, please remove the first 3 numbers (454) as this is no longer in use.

These two things then become very important ie the number, and it being readily visible. The rest follows.

So placing the 4 digit number only on your letterbox can be tricky to locate your address. Especially where letterboxes are in a common place with others, but also, is the number visible from both directions, as you cannot guarantee from which direction help will come. If the 4 digits are not visible, which one is missing, the first or the last? This could lead to confusion as they will indicate more than one possible address.

So please, for a quick location to be found, we need a 4 digit number, on a post at the entranceway, that is visible from both directions.

With the rapid increase in new residential dwellings, there are many houses with no letterbox and no visible street number. A boldly positioned number on a fence, gate post or front corner of the house, all visible from the road (and at night) are essential for a quick location of the right address. Here the number sequence can be taken from the neighbour, as long as empty sections, rear sections etc are considered. Usually, your correct house number will be on a document from the local council and will be shared with the postal system, even if there is no postal delivery normally.

As we approach winter, remove the old vegetation at your gate so that you are doing everything in advance, to aid a rapid and successful location of your address.

SHAVE FOR A CURE

Local Darfield dairy farmer, Sara Hill is doing her part to help others in need by reaching out to the community to drum up donations for the Leukaemia and Blood Cancer Foundation. She is shaving her head to support those losing their hair due to treatment in their fight against cancer.

Sara has been dairy farming since she was twenty one but took a big gap to have her two children. This is her first season back and her first time working in Darfield, which she loves as it’s such a lovely community. She played Touch Rugby here and is in the process of becoming a volunteer for the Fire Brigade.

Sara previously shaved her head when she was sixteen, which was quite a different experience for her.

“My hair was never a priority to me, but after actually shaving it off, I really felt the loss of it, and it made me realise how hard it would be to lose your hair when you had no choice,” commented Sara.

“I’ve known a few people in my life that have had to fight this fight, and I know losing your hair can be a massive loss of identity and comfort and become a very isolating experience in a very scary and uncertain time.

“It’s been a really hard and uncertain couple of years for

everyone and I’ve been thinking how much harder this period would have been for anyone diagnosed with cancer and having to deal with everything. So, it just felt right to do it again and put some positive energy back into the world,” concluded Sara.

All money donated will go towards funding important research, supporting patients and families across New Zealand, education and information sessions, awareness of the diseases and advocating for the patients.

Shave Day for Sara is May 30th, and her goal is to raise $5,000, but she would love to fundraise as much as possible for this great cause.

GARDEN CLUB CELEBRATES 70TH

Longevity is well known when it comes to garden clubs, and none more so than the Sheffield Garden Club.

The Club is about to celebrate its 70th Platinum Jubilee with an afternoon high tea on Saturday, May 6th at the Sheffield Community Hall. Current and past members are invited to attend this special event and enjoy an afternoon of delicious food, fun and memories and listen to guest speaker Louise Deans

Records, are held, that date back to the very first meeting held on April 20th, 1953, at the A & P rooms with the intention to form a Garden Club in Sheffield. Mrs H.0. Judd was elected as President and it was voted that the Club affiliates with the Canterbury Horticultural Society. On May 4th, 1953, a committee meeting set out rules for the Club stating, “Any person who was interested in any aspect of gardening and wishing to further the efforts of such gardeners may become a member.” Membership fees were set at 2/6d per annum.

Twenty founding members attended that very first meeting, and by February the following

year, membership attendance had risen to forty six.

Club competitions, speakers and garden visits soon became a regular structure that still guides the Club today, and although it no longer runs monthly competitions, the Club runs the annual Malvern A & P Show flower competition section. The Sheffield Garden Club meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 1.30pm at St Ambrose Church Hall, with guest speakers and activities over the winter

months and garden visits during summer.

For more information about the Club’s Jubilee High Tea see advertisement in this issue.

COMING TOGETHER FOR GISBORNE

Get your glow on with an exclusive VIP experience at the Hororātā Glow Festival, relax at Terrace Downs, or watch Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton mow your lawns while helping the people of Tairawhiti Gisborne with the recovery from Cyclone Gabrielle.

The Selwyn District Council and Waikirikiri Selwyn businesses have joined forces to raise funds for the cyclone hit region with a charity Auction on Friday, May 5th.

The fundraiser will be part of a

cocktail evening at Rossendale Winery, with donated items up for Auction and the proceeds going to the Gisborne Mayoral Relief Fund. This evening provides a fantastic opportunity to network with other Selwyn businesses while supporting a great cause. From horse-trekking and luxury accommodation stays at Lake Coleridge, to a free business promotional photoshoot or taking to the sky with the Canterbury Gliding Club, there will be a range of unique products and experiences on offer for bidders.

Tairawhiti / Gisborne District Mayor Rehette Stoltz will share a video message, updating guests on the flood recovery work.

“It’s been fantastic to see the way Selwyn businesses are getting in behind this event, with more signing up as we go. We’re looking forward to a really fun night and raising money for a great cause. As a community we know first-hand what a huge boost it is to have others supporting us in the long-haul recovery from this disaster. Now

it’s our turn, and it’s good to see how generous and creative Selwyn people have been in giving back and helping others,” commented Sam.

The Auction event is the latest in a series of fundraisers throughout the community to support the Tairawhiti Gisborne District, after Selwyn ‘adopted’ the community through the Local Government New Zealand Adopt-a-Community programme, partnering communities to support areas hardest hit by Cyclone Gabrielle.

Tairawhiti Gisborne experienced heavy damage from the cyclone, with a long journey ahead to restore roads, bridges, power, and water infrastructure and to help displaced residents back into their homes. Other recent fundraisers have included a donation drive at Selwyn Sounds, a fire brigade truck pull and Selwyn schools pairing up with their counterparts in Gisborne.

It Can’t Be Raining - My Phone Says Its Sunny!

Ever been guilty of this? You look outside, see the clouds but your phone clearly says its sunny, so therefore you put on your sunny appropriate clothes and freeze all day in the drizzle.

Why are we collectively looking outside of the obvious because technology or the news or FB tells us otherwise?

It can be very useful to check outside sources when making decisions, but ultimately you need to look inside yourself. How do you feel? How does it look to you? Chances are, if you look outside and see it is raining, then it is raining.

Making decisions about home ownership, investment property or any other purchase should be based on what you feel you can honestly afford. Can you go without if need be? Can you live without sending your children to boarding school, or the new car? Are you willing to put in the required work to add value to the new home, or the extra hours needed to afford the mortgage? Think about what the sacrifice may mean to you and be honest with yourself.

Only you can decide if home ownership will work for you, and when you have made that decision yours, you will achieve your dream.

Recently, West Melton’s new traffic signals were officially celebrated after nine months’ of extensive construction work. The town’s first set of traffic signals are at the Weedons Ross Road/ SH73 intersection, at the start of the route to the West Coast via Arthur’s Pass, in the middle of the fast-expanding town, just a stone’s throw from West Melton Primary School.

Chair of the West Melton Residents Association Tim Schurr said, “the project’s completion was huge for road safety. It’s fixed our town.”

The project marks the start of safer journeys through and around the Canterbury township and the completion of the eleventh project in the Government’s New Zealand Upgrade Programme.

James Caygill , Director Regional Relationships for Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency, joined the Mayor of Selwyn

District Sam Broughton as well as Council, community representatives and contracting company Fulton Hogan to celebrate the project’s completion, including a performance from West Melton School’s Kapa Haka group. The people who organised the petition to have the intersection made safer with traffic signals were also present, Pru and Ken Bowman “Previously it felt dangerous for school students crossing this increasingly busy state highway.

Now we hope more students will choose to walk, scoot or bike to school, knowing they can do so more safely with the pedestrian cross signal.” commented James Caygill.

As well as traffic lights, the project also required Fulton Hogan to build a new cul-de-sac on West Melton Road, a link road and roundabout connecting Weedons Ross and West Melton Roads, make changes to stock water races, and build safe shared paths, for walkers and cyclists.

NATIVE REVEGETATION

The combination of dry conditions, thin, poor-quality soil and a highly modified river is making for an extra challenging native revegetation programme on the central Canterbury/ Waitaha river berm.

However, tricky conditions or even flooding are not going to stop our rivers team from trying to reintroduce native plant species along the Waikirikiri Selwyn River.

That’s because those challenges are far outweighed by the benefits, which include protecting the habitat of the threatened Canterbury mudfish, enhancing the recreational area near the state highway, decreasing flood risk by supporting our flood protection trees, and increasing seed sources to re-establish native plant growth.

As part of our wider berm transition project, 5,000 native plants are to be planted along the berm of the Waikirikiri this

year, adding to the 15,700 that were installed in 2022.

“The braided awa Waikirikiri might once have been flanked with varieties of carex grasses, toetoe, patchy kānuka and dry tussock land. There’s almost none of that left now so just getting the plants back in place as a seed source is the focus,”

walking spot, is parched, which makes encouraging growth a challenge.

There is also a heightened chance of losing plantings in these conditions. In this area, ECan are using strategies that have been proven elsewhere to support growth.

Strategies include:

• planting deeper than usual

commented Regional Braided River Revival Lead,

Along the river, two sites showed promise for supporting native plant life. One is marshy with drains and waterways that join the river, and here you can find native plant species on low areas of the berm.

The other is at the confluence of the Hororata River. At these sites, weeds and poor soil are issues, however, they are the only two areas on the lower reaches of the river that might have semi-wetland conditions or get some water during the year. A third site, near a popular

GARDEN FOCUS FOR MAY:

Plant winter salad greens

Sow directly into the garden bed:

• Coriander: takes up to 21 days to germinate so needs to be sown directly into the garden bed now

• Annual spinach, asian greens (pak choi, etc), rocket, miner's lettuce, corn salad, mesclun, mizuna

• Radish

• Snow peas

Plant out seedlings ASAP:

• Lettuce, annual spinach, beetroot (use their leaves for salad greens)

Sow in Autumn crops that will mature in spring and early summer:

• Broad beans

• Garlic

• Cauliflower: overwinter young plants for a head-start for early cauliflowers in spring.

• Green manure cover crops: if you have empty garden beds, sow a cover crop to improve and protect the soil over the winter.

• wool weed mats that draw water in

• Mulching

• additional watering

• staged, dense planting blocks

• sub-canopy planting where appropriate.

There are many challenges to re-establishing native plant life, with generally poor soil that is bone dry for much of the time, whenever there is a hint of water available, “the weeds just go boof!”, Greg added. Like the weeds, challenges have been plentiful during this project.

“We were a month into it, and we had some pretty big floods that blocked all the access and messed things up a bit. That was pretty difficult to work around. At the same time, it meant that there was lots of water and silts - there’s definitely pros and cons. Another hurdle the plants face is animal browsing, which affected two sites.

About five percent of the plants were pulled out at one site, and a temporary fence has been installed to prevent further damage.

Despite the challenges, “It’s definitely one of the areas that’s worth putting the work into,” Greg concluded.

A great line up of vintage and veteran cars will participate in the annual Anzac Malvern Run, which starts from the Darfield Recreation Centre on Anzac Day. Everyone is welcome to head along to the Recreation Centre to see the cars between 10am and 11:30am before they tour through Darfield, Sheffield, Coalgate, Hororata, Glenroy and then on to Glentunnel where they will once again be available for viewing at the Glentunnel Community Centre around lunchtime.

The oldest vehicle in this year’s Run is once again a Wolseley that was built in 1900. It is owned by Colin Winter and Judy of Dunedin and has come especially to participate in the Malvern Run. The Wolseley has been in Colin’s family’s ownership for over seventy years. Another car which is a real crowd -pleaser is the 1912 Stanley Steamer owned by Allan Familton of Rolleston. The

Stanley Steamer, like so many others on the Run, is a very rare car. It is large, very powerful, and goes down the road leaving a cloud of steam in its wake. There is quite a procedure in starting it for a run, as it makes all sorts of interesting noises as it warms up which never fails to gather a crowd. If you live on the route that the Run takes, don’t be surprised if Allan comes to your door with a hose to request water

for its boiler - it only has a range of about forty miles before it needs a top-up! Around fifty cars are expected for the Run, many from the wider Canterbury area. Darfield residents participating include Sandra and Jeff Newell, who will be driving their 1925 12/4 Austin, Matthew Hey with a rare 1933 Wolseley Hornet Special, and Malcolm and Anita McGibbon with their 1913 Ford Model T. Of the fifty cars participating this year, many are over 100 years old and include Ford Model T’s, Unic, Renault, Cadillac Rover, Wolseley and Hupmobile amongst others.

Organiser Colin Hey from West

Melton commented, “Anzac Day is such an important day for all New Zealanders to be able to commemorate it with family and friends of the Vintage Car Club is special.”

Colin is also appreciative of the support given by Auto Restorations, a decades-old business in Christchurch which has a world-wide reputation for quality automotive restoration work. They have provided rally plates to all entrants, and assisted with promoting the event. Other businesses which have assisted with this Vintage Car Club event include Birchfield Energy and the Malvern News.

Over the five years the event has been running it has raised over $5,000 for the Darfield RSA. Head along to the Darfield Recreation Centre or Glentunnel Community Centre on Anzac Day (entry is free), or pop out to your gate to watch and wave as these old cars and motorcycles pass by. You will be sure to get a wave back!

The Run will be set off from the Recreation Centre by Mayor Sam Broughton at 11.30 sharp after a short remembrance performed by Terry Hutchison from Darfield. The organisers are delighted the Mayor could perform this duty.

Following that logic, if the water assets remained with the sixtyfour Councils, ratepayers would expect water services to be very cheap thirty years out based on their questionable financial model.

All other Three Waters components remain, meaning

changes are contrived and disingenuous. The PM has stated he will go to the Polls with the current proposal while at the same time claiming citizens can make submissions through another farcical Select Committee process.

They are glossing over the fact that they are misappropriating our water assets without compensation, while claiming with another statement of fiction that we still have a say by having a representative sitting at a somewhat crowded table.

Please come clean Prime Minister what is the real reason behind these reforms?

Another surprise to come soon, with the centralisation of resource consenting.

Another diminution of Council services, ratepayer voice and manifestation of an increasingly costly Wellington based bureaucracy.

MALVERN RIFLE CLUB

On Saturday, April 15th, Malvern Rifle Club held their Postal Shoot competition over 300, 500 and 600 yards, with 10 counting shots at each distance. This a coached team competition which clubs hold on their home range, with scores collated by the National Office. There are five members in the TR team and four in the F Class team. Other shooters also shot over the three distances.

The afternoon was sunny but cool, with a wind zig-zagging across the Range from the targets to the shooters. At 600 yards, when the sun went off the Range, the temperature quickly dropped.

There were some great scores posted by some of the shooters.

A teenage boy had recently developed an interest in weight lifting. His father was sceptical, not knowing if his son would be responsible in this new venture, but accompanied him to the sports equipment store anyway. After perusing the shelves for a bit, the boy eventually found a set of weights he liked. "Dad, can we get these?"

The father looked the weight set over sceptically. "Hmm, I don't know."

"Please, Dad," the boy begged. "I promise I'll use

them every day."

"You do realize this is a very big commitment.”

"I know, Dad."

"They're also fairly expensive."

"I'll use them, Dad, I promise, pleeeaaasse."

"Well.... okay."

The father then pays for the equipment and they headed for the door.

"Awww," the son whined. "You mean I have to carry them to the car?"
