INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
Ex-local Margaret Lee sadly passed away on the 8th November, 2022, aged 83.
Margaret and her husband Maurice were very well known in the community, having owned and operated Darfield Drapery for forty six years, before retiring into Christchurch.
In March 1963, Margaret started her drapery business in Darfield on what she thought was a temporary basis. At the time, she was twenty three years old and had saved approximately $100.
Margaret thought she could probably sell wool locally, so her father suggested she travel around the area selling it to farmers’ wives. But it wasn’t long before she realised she would need a store to be able to purchase the wool through, and that’s how it all began.
Margaret thought the demand for wool would drop off after winter, so she originally only planned to be in the shop for six months. However, her business flourished.
After four years in business, Margaret and Maurice moved the
shop to the west end of Darfield, and twenty years later, they moved to the building where Property Brokers is currently. The business exceeded their expectations, and in May 2009 after forty six years they deservedly retired.
“Mum was considered by many as a local icon and she was well respected in the community. The locals admired what she and Dad created in Darfield,” commented Margaret and Maurice’s son Graham Lee “Dad is now ninety years old, and many comment that he still looks the same. He is still driving and keeping himself occupied, but he misses Mum terribly,” Graham concluded.
Kathy Meads , Margaret and Maurice’s daughter said, “the family received hundreds of cards and messages after Mum’s passing. The comments were wonderful, and a real reflection of how much the local community cared for her.”
Kathy expressed her gratitude to everyone who reached out to the family.

MEMORIES OF EX-LOCAL
Continued from front page. It has been a huge comfort to them, and in particular to Maurice, knowing how much Margaret meant to the customers who became their
friends over the many years they lived in Darfield.
Some of the delightful comments the family treasure included:
• “Margaret was a lovely lady. I enjoyed going into the Drapery shop. She was always the same and you were greeted with a smile. The world was a better place with Margaret in it.”
Glacial Clay Face Mask

• “We have wonderful memories of Margaret, especially in those early days. I spent many happy hours over a cup of tea and chats with Margaret. They were great days.”
• “Memories going back over sixty years, all of them of happy times.”
• “Margaret was so special to us. She had a wonderful sense of humour, and we thoroughly enjoyed our visits to the Drapery. We would always leave with arms full of items we’d bought that we didn’t know we needed! We will miss her dearly”.
The well-known wooden horse was a real draw card for many children. In 2020, Maurice gifted the horse to Darfield Property Brokers, and it is fitting that the horse now sits in pride of place in the window, for the local children to continue to enjoy, as it did fifty years ago.

WEST MELTON COUNTRY FETE
Plans are well underway for the next West Melton Country Fete to be held at West Melton School on Sunday, March 26th, from 10am to 3pm.
For just a gold coin donation at the gate, you can enjoy a day filled with fabulous entertainment from local bands, dancers and school groups, plus loads of children's activities such as pony rides, farm yard animals, jeep rides, bouncy castles, bungee tramps, kids zumba and Pedalmania.
Adults can grab a coffee, a raffle ticket (and hopefully a prize!) and browse the 120 amazing stalls filled with handmade crafts, homewares, food, clothing and health products. A great range of food will be available throughout the day from two food courts.
In 2021, the Fete saw over 7,000 people attend from across
Canterbury, raising over $45,000 for the School. This money provided new shade sails in key play areas, sports equipment, wonderful quiet play equipment, as well as fencing to create a new green space that the children all love and enjoy daily. As in previous years, the Fete has been proudly supported by Gold Sponsors Ray White Real Estate, McLenaghan Contracting and Wilfield Rise - yoursection.co.nz. Organised by the Friends of West Melton School the event is one not to be missed. Organisers hope to see you there.
For a full list of stalls, sponsors, activities and entertainment please keep an eye out for updates on their Facebook Page: West Melton Fete.

The impact of the cost-of-living crisis is being felt in households up and down New Zealand, and Selwyn is not immune. While Selwyn still has one of the strongest regional economies in the country, the fact that the number of people on benefits in our district has more than doubled since Labour came to office is telling. The number of people on a benefit in September 2017 was 843, but by late last year, it had risen to 1,878 - an increase of 123 percent.
Families with young children are particularly vulnerable right now - and we all know our region is booming with young families. With house prices in Selwyn averaging $830,000, most of these families need two incomes to keep the household afloat. But going to work often also means paying for childcare, and in New Zealand, it is among the most expensive in the developed world.
We have a wonderful array of
NICOLA GRIGG OPINION COLUMN
local and private providers of early childhood education in our region, and I love the fact local parents have such a choice of places to send their kids. However, with increased Government pressure for these providers to meet pay paritywithout enough State supporttheir fees are naturally going to go up. This is a big problem for many of our families, and more often than not, it’s the mothers who forgo their careers and incomes to stay home and care for children.
It is not right that parents should have to choose between paying for early childhood education and their mortgage. The National Party has just announced our FamilyBoost childcare tax rebate to support young families, and as our Spokesperson for Women, I’m particularly excited to be able to deliver this meaningful policy that will go some way to reducing the cost of livingespecially for mums.
By clamping down on the extortionate amount of money currently being spent on working groups and consultants, a National Government would fund about $250 million in rebates.
This is a targeted programme that will be available to families earning up to $180,000, with the full $75 a week rebate available to families earning up to $140,000.
This means that, for example, a teacher and a plumber earning $130,000 between them who are spending $300 a week on childcare would receive a weekly rebate of $75, paid fortnightly by IRD to the parents’ bank account. According to 2022 Infometrics data, there are over 5,100 preschoolers in Selwyn, and I’m certain this year’s data will show even more. I believe a policy like this will make a real difference to our people’s lives, and I hope you do too.
Nicola Grigg, MP for Selwyn.
STOP & GIVE WAY, SAVE YOUR LIFE
Selwyn residents are being reminded to take care of their lives and others at intersections on local roads as part of the Council's annual Intersection Safety Awareness Campaign. Intersections have been identified as a hot spot for crashes around Selwyn, with over half of all accidents in 2022 happening at road crossings. Council Group Manager Infrastructure and Property Murray Washington said, “driver
behaviour plays a big role in keeping road users safe.
“Being alert, obeying road signs and taking extra care can be the difference between making it to your destination safely or being involved in a serious crash.
Stopping and giving way may seem such a simple task, but it only takes a momentary lapse of judgement for something to go very wrong,” Murray added.
In 2022, there was a total of 155 crashes reported on local roads
in Selwyn, with poor handling, judgement or observation contributing to 76 percent of these crashes.
The Council will soon begin installing advanced stop warning signs and red road markings at some high-risk local intersections to help alert drivers.
“Every driver has a responsibility to themselves and others on the road. Make sure you are correctly stopping and giving way every time,” Murray concluded.

SELWYN AWARDS
A highly anticipated celebration of Selwyn's success is returning this year. The Selwyn Awards, held every two years, are back for 2023, to celebrate the successes of businesses, not-forprofit organisations and individuals who live or work in the Selwyn district.
Nominations for the 2023 Awards are now open and will remain open until 31st May, with this year’s Awards expanded to eleven categories, including a new Heritage category.
The Awards have been a growing highlight to the calendar, and after a sold out gala dinner in 2021 with over 500 attendees, the dinner is expanding to a bigger venue, being held at the Selwyn Sports Centre on 5th August.
“The Selwyn Awards are a unique celebration of both our
businesses and community,” commented Mayor Sam Broughton .
“In Selwyn, community is at the heart of many of our businesses, and businesses are a cornerstone of our community. So it’s great to have awards that celebrate so many who help build our community through the jobs they sustain and the important part they play in preserving our history and environment, and support the diverse community that makes Waikirikiri Selwyn such a special place to live,” Sam concluded.
“Businesses, groups and individuals can enter themselves for awards, while anyone from the public can also make nominations. There are categories for all sizes of business and for a wide range of activities, from Environment and
Sustainability to Diversity, Sport, Innovation and Tourism,” commented Council Group Manager Community Services, Denise Kidd
“The Awards are a good chance to take stock of what you’re doing or make a special note of the hard work of others. For a category like Environment and Sustainability, people often don’t realise how much they’re contributing, and that even a small contribution makes a difference,” Denise concluded.
Key dates:
• Applications opened: 1st March 2023
• Applications close: 31st May 2023
• Awards dinner tickets on sale: 1st June 2023
• Gala Dinner: 5th August 2023. For more information visit selwyn.govt.nz/selwynawards
MALVERN U3A
Malvern U3A’s March 10th guest speaker was Kimberly Wade , a Clinical Director and a Registered Neurologic Music Therapist.
Her talk on music and singing in rehab was very interesting. She has the drive to inspire people to use music to communicate and express themselves to reach their potential.
Kimberly works with individuals and small groups providing consultation in long term rehabilitation services.
The emphasis is not on music teaching but on Music Therapy, music being the one activity that involves both the left and right brain hemispheres. This is important in the case of strokes, head injuries and similar aphasias.
She emphasises that although a sufferer might not be able to speak, this was not a lack of intelligence.
Music Therapy is an allied health profession, alongside Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy. Music Therapists have rigorous professional training to a master's level. Music Therapy is strengths-based, focusing on
celebrating who people are and developing what they bring.
Kimberly was accompanied by Grant Cowan, a client who demonstrated the value of Music Therapy, and we wound up having the whole meeting singing along together!
Kimberly and Grant were inspiring and informative. Our next presenter will be Linda Seaton on Cemeteries.
Maintaining your Focus
It can be very challenging to set goals with all the ‘white noise’ going on around us. Media hype is a number one distraction and contradicts itself on a daily basis. There is no doubt events will occur that will impact on your strategies to achieve your goals, but it is important to remain focused on the results. Be flexible with your planning to take into account, the changes out of your control, such as interest rates. So, you are going to have to add two years to that plan to achieve the desired outcome. That’s ok. As long as the goal remains intact, the posts may have to move.
Life is a challenge to be embraced and celebrated. Enjoy the journey, and the results will speak for themselves!
Ginny Nelson.

MUSIC AT SHEFFIELD SCHOOL
At the end of 2022, Sheffield School had the privilege of gaining a grant from our hardworking community group, the Malvern Lions. They supported our dream of having a fully functional music centre at Sheffield School. As a result, every child will have an opportunity to learn, explore and even perform in front of audiences around Malvern in the future.
Once we are fully up and running, we will then look to invite the community in for ‘open music nights’ (especially beginners). The evening would involve helping each other learn
in a safe and inclusive environment. Watch this space for more details.
Below is a list of a few instruments we have for our children:
• 8 keyboards
• 8 guitars
• 1 electric guitar with amp
• 10 ukulele
• 1 drum kit
• Bongos, cajons and many other hand drums
• Loads of percussion instruments and more.
Be ready to hear our crescendos spread out across the Malvern district.
Another massive thanks to the Malvern Lions for supporting our school community with this venture.
Thank you!
Nigel Easson, Sheffield School Principal.

2023 PRESIDENT - MICHELLE WEBSTER
This year’s Malvern A&P Show President is Michelle Webster , with coal mining, rather than farming as her family's heritage. Enticed from coalfields in Scotland in the early 1800's to the Denniston Mines (above Westport) where her older siblings were born. Her family moved to this side of the hill when her Dad took on the Mine Managers role at Klondyke, for the Coalgate Coal Company. Michelle was born in Coalgate and attended Glentunnel Primary School before her family moved back to the West Coast. She attended Inangahua College in Reefton, incidentally at the same time as Senior Vice President Alister Barnhill , before eventually moving back. Michelle’s first association with the Show was probably through entering artwork when she attended Glentunnel Primary School.
Michelle joined the Sheffield Young Farmers Club and every year the Young Farmers were tasked with putting on some sort of crowd entertainment.
“I recall truck pulling, top town type fun and the memorable Piano Smashing. This entailed teams of rival Clubs competing to pass the entire instrument through a toilet seat the fastest for the highly prestigious Young Farmers Club Gumboot Trophy. With the help of three strapping sledgehammers, we won this event in the eighties,” commented Michelle.
“Years later when my daughter Cheyenne was at primary school, I was roped in to help with the Art section, which in time I became the Convener of, then later the Wool section, which boasted over 100 fleeces last show.

2023 PRESIDENT, MICHELLE WEBSTER
Michelle has worn many different work hats over the years in the agriculture industry. She started as a very young Station Cook at Mount White for Ray Marshall , which began a lifestyle hard to beat. A shearing season in Western Australia made her appreciate how unique New Zealand is. She then spent a few years as a senior supervisor at Santa Rosa for Jens Christianson .
“I was then drawn back to the sheds as wellknown Mike Richards needed a rousie, and I needed to stay in one place for my daughter's schooling.
“Sideline jobs always fill the seasonal gaps, including farm and potato work, with the late Godfrey Judd and his brother Warwick , provided interim income for years. The lack of casual staff in the farming sector nowadays has offered plenty of unusual opportunities. I remember days splitting garlic cloves by hand for planting - we ponged for weeks!!
“When Mike retired Shaun Adams and I continued with his already established lifestyle run working under the company ‘Adams Brothers Shearing Ltd’, with the addition of crutching/shearing trailers, we offer the full gambit mobile or shed all across Canterbury and beyond. The work variety is never boring and now even includes Alpacas and Llamas,” commented Michelle.
“Market stalls in recent times, selling tie dye and craft with Cheyenne are fun. Cooking for John Bruce's large Blade Gang over winter becomes an annual adventurous travelling holiday. Finally, starting a firewood business based locally with Shaun Adams last year, is ramping up production for this chilly season, “Michelle concluded.
ROVING COMMENTATOR
One of the well-known voices you will hear on Show morning is that of well-known local, Stuart Baxter . He has lived in the area his whole life and progressed from farm worker to farm owner, seeing many changes over the years on his farm, from sheep, cropping, potato growing to currently deer farming.
Stuart has a long history with the Show, starting as a runner collecting results when he was about 16 or 17 years old.
He later started his commentating days with the late, well-known and respected Molly Townsend He is now joined on Show Day by Melissa Jebson, who is another local with a long involvement with the Association. A commentator ambassador takes over for the horse jumping in the afternoon. Set-up starts the day before the event and Stuart arrives early on Show morning to get organised for his morning of roving commentary. The Show has changed over the years, with people attending years ago to view the sheep and cattle for pre-purchasing, but that has changed with fewer studs around. The focus has turned more to the competition side of things and a family day out.
Stuart tries to keep his time on the microphone interesting and loves getting out amongst stallholders for their input. He has a real natural wit and enjoys making people laugh.
The Show is also a family day for the Baxter Family, with children and grandchildren attending to enjoy what fabulous things the event has to offer.
Stuart encourages everyone to get involved with their local community and Show, and he has seen the trend tending back towards people wanting to be involved in their community again.

WOOLLY EXTRAVAGANZA
“My introduction into the wool industry began with a summer holiday job that never ended. A long career in an ancient industry, one of the few that technology can't completely replace,” commented Michelle.
“Working amongst legends, in the heart of our beautiful country with often the most picturesque office views, I've been very fortunate. Adventures and characters, fun and hard graft have made a lifestyle that's as unpredictable as the weather that controls us.
Rousie, Presser, Classer, Blade Cook, Crutcher and Shearing Judge, many now wear multiple hats. Though we've all witnessed the fact our industry has struggled through many changes, we still produce the greatest product in the world.
“Predictably this year's theme is ‘Sheep and Wool’, and as such, we are hosting a ‘Woolly Extravaganza’. The many talented folks, be it passionate individuals with an innovative idea right up to the large International companies that shine successfully on the world stage, have all jumped on board with honest enthusiasm. As one put it, ‘Not in competition, in partnership to educate and promote awareness of the endless possibilities this perfect bounty has to offer’. Hands-on interactive displays, live sheep sculptures, exotic breeds and demos will all add to the showcase.
“Ten goody bags, brimming with kindly donated woolly delights, are up for grabs, along with some very exclusive home décor,” Michelle concluded.
WOOL
WoolWorks New Zealand Ltd takes New Zealand fibre and delivers it to the world. Their wool scouring process uses con nuous reused and recycled water, with reduced power consump on. They recycle all waste, making reusable products wherever possible. This move towards sustainability demonstrates that companies can operate in an environmentally friendly way without compromising product quality. They s ll produce the brightest, cleanest wool from happy New Zealand sheep. They can’t wait to a end the Malvern A&P Show to showcase their business and the part they play in the New Zealand Wool Industry.

New Zealand Merino (NZM) is a global leader in the sourcing, transacting and the marketing of ethical wool. They connect the world’s most progressive growers to the world’s most committed brands.
NZM has established strong long-term relationships with their wool industry partners in the supply chain to provide integrity to the ZQ and ZQRX programmes.
Brand and supply chain partners must share their core values and include an ethical approach to doing business, transparency, and a commitment to sustainability of the wool industry and social, environmental and economic sustainability in general.
Wools Of New Zealand is proud to support the Malvern A&P Show as part of the Wool Extravaganza, displaying samples of carpet ranges made from New Zealand wool.
Wools of New Zealand and the Primary Wool Cooperative joined together eighteen months ago to form a partnership that gave New Zealand farmers the opportunity to supply wool into the New Zealand carpet industry.
Roger Fuller , South Island Auction Manager, with over forty years in the wool industry sees the formation of this grower owned company a major step in trying to provide better returns to growers, who are currently seeing some of the poorest returns for wool in recent times.

Their Wool is sourced from farms throughout the South Island of New Zealand. Yaldhurst Wools staff have a combined experience of two hundred years in the wool trade.
In 2009, they started Exquisite Blankets, their top quality New Zealand wool bedding blankets and throws.
Our proud Exquisite wool blanket history starts here in New Zealand and extends to a woollen mill in England, that dates back to 1783. In 1893 this mill started buying NZ wool. This is proudly displayed in a logbook at the Yorkshire mill. Our family wool buying business, Yaldhurst Wools, Christchurch, buys wool from the same farm featured in that logbook, along with other wool sourced from South Island farms. Some of this wool is exported to the mill in England.

MESSAGE OF SUPPORT - LYDIA GLIDDON
Agriculture is the heart and centre of Malvern. I think the rural outlook makes Malvern such a special place to live, and what better place to enjoy
catching up with people than at the Malvern A&P Show.
We can be so proud of the highquality produce and stock that is grown by our district, and now
more than ever, we need to support our agricultural industry.
The Malvern A&P Show is not just for the farmers, it is a great way for people and children to
see what country life is about. Well done to the Show committee for all the hard work and preparation leading up to the event. Too often, we take for granted the amazing area we live in, get involved and enjoy a day out in the country. I look forward to seeing you all there. Councillor, Lydia Gliddon.
Across Selwyn, there’s always something amazing to do which allows us to connect with the heart of our communities. That rings true in March as we approach dates for two fantastic shows. We start in Sheffield on March 25th with the Malvern A&P Show, now in its 124th year. The Show is a real treat for the whole family and the perfect opportunity to showcase Selwyn’s communities’ prized animals, homegrown produce, craft and so much more. Throughout the day ringside events, children’s activities and competitions join with trade stands and catering providers to ensure there is something for everybody to enjoy.
I wish Michelle and the committee all the best for the day.
Hot on the heels of the Malvern A&P Show is New Zealand’s longest running Field Days, the South Island Agricultural Field Days, held between March 29th-31st, in Kirwee.
NICOLA GRIGG
It’s Autumn show season and I’m really looking forward to attending the Malvern A&P Show and South Island Agricultural Field Days this month!
I will have a National Party stall at both events and would love to see as many of you as I can, so feel free to come over for a chat. I will be hosting a number of my National Party colleagues at Field Days, including Agriculture Spokesperson Todd Muller and National Leader Christopher Luxon , on Thursday 30th March. Please do come along to share your views and ideas with us - or just say hi!

- PROUD TO
MESSAGE FROM SHOW PATRON
My congratulations to our President Michelle Webster and the Malvern A&P committee for over coming Covid disruption and organising next week’s Show. There is a financial cost with having to cancel a Show, and we are very fortunate in having the support of the district. Having no grounds to maintain has been a huge factor in keeping costs down.
It always astounds me when I turn up at the working bees, and see the fantastic local support that gets the Show up and running - such dedication and effort that needs the community support by attending and enjoying yourself on Show day.
The actual Show is a basis in which to launch and show your exhibits, compete against
others but more importantly socialise! New Zealand is paradise when one compares it with countries like Ukraine. Having events such as rural community days like our A&P Show is ‘icing on the cake’ for our community’s wellbeing. President Michelle has asked me to stage a vintage vehicle section, which makes me think of my great grandparents, George F and Margaret R Wright who would have attended the Show in 1906 with their then new Cadillac motor car. Before these vehicles, there would have been horse drawn drays or gigs, and of course life was much slower.
I’m guessing the steam train would have also dropped off passengers from the Oxford railway line and of course the
present line. That would have been an exciting day for a family, given the remote location of Sheffield.
We have a 1906 Cadillac (exactly the same as George F’s) and it might well be fitting that it appears at this year’s Show, if not to remind one of the historical mode of transport but also be on display in the vintage section.
To the Show public, Show committee, sponsors, exhibitors, be they trade or livestock - have a wonderful day of competition and fellowship, but most of all, enjoy yourself together with your family.

AsPoultryConvenorwhatis yourrole?Howmanyentrants doyouusuallyattract?
My role is to encourage entries, as well as set up and take down the cages and organise a judge. Typically we have around 100 entries, which is great. Somebackgroundtoyou takingonthisrole.Howlong haveyoudoneit?
I took over as Section Convenor nearly ten years ago as a way to support the Show and as a Poultry exhibitor myself to ensure the section was well organised and supported by the wider poultry exhibitor community.
Arethereanyspecialfeatures oradditionalclassesinthis sectionthisyear?
Not this year we are just looking forward to welcoming exhibitors back after last years Covid enforced cancellation, and building on 2021 when Gavin Greenwood with a Barred Rock won the inaugural Best Animal in Show prize. This was a great achievement for a poultry exhibitor, and hopefully raised the awareness of the section and exhibiting poultry as a hobby.
Onthedaywhatareyourduties?
Doyouhaveassistance?
On the day, it's simply welcoming exhibitors, supporting the judge and writing up prize cards. Those of us who are regular exhibitors of poultry are a tight-knit group and look to support each other's shows in our respective areas. For example, I’m judging the Poultry Section at the Methven A&P the week before.
FollowingShowDayand beforeitareyouinvolvedin workingbeesandclean-ups, set-ups
The Poultry Section is one of the more labour-intensive sections for set-up and take-down given all the pens are hired from a local poultry club, therefore
need collecting, assembling, numbering and straw put in them. After the Show, it’s the whole process again, but in reverse. Given there has been a Poultry section since the Shows inception nearly 125 years ago, if there was an opportunity for Selwyn District Council, sponsors or local businesses to support the construction of permanent pens, like at Ellesmere Showgrounds, this would be of great assistance and help ensure a further 125 years of poultry exhibition at Malvern A&P.
Whatdoyouseeasthefuture oftheA&PShow-ingeneral, andthisoneinparticular?
I believe the Show is slowly transitioning from being predominantly a competition between producers and exhibitors to more of a community event and a window into the rural way of life for those members of the Malvern and wider community who aren't directly engaged in farming or related industries. As a father of two school aged children, for me one of the greatest things about the Show is seeing my children have such a great day out, enjoying many of the same things I did when I was their age. As for the 2023 event, again, it will be great to hold the Show after last year’s cancellation. I look forward to visiting the wool feature, like Poultry this is also a well-supported section at Malvern A&P that is often overlooked.

GREAT SUPPORT
No show can be successful without the committee 100% behind it and ours is one of the very best, loaded with past Presidents and capable Convenors. It enables younger committee members coming up, the security to encourage their ideas with support. Those special individuals that appear once a year like clockwork to get the job done
are good community men and women that are the humble backbone of all small country towns endurance.

GIFT LAMB CLASS
The Gift Lamb section of A&P Shows is a special area allowing farmers to exhibit lambs, as well as give a financial boost to the Show. This year's Malvern A&P Show Gift Lamb Convenor is Tim Wright , this is his first year in the role. He has been in the cattle section for the last eight years. His family has a long history of involvement with the Show and Tim has only missed two Malvern A&P Shows since he was born.
“The Malvern A&P Show is a family affair for the Wright family. I have had numerous family members who have been past Presidents. I thoroughly enjoy spending the day at the Show with my family and hope the Gift Lamb section is well supported. It’s wonderful to see some many people giving back to the Show via this wonderful class,” commented Tim.
Tim’s role starts prior to the day as he tries to make contact with as many farmers as he can between Arthur’s Pass to Darfield and up to the Rakaia Gorge, covering all areas in between, hoping to get as many Gift Lamb entries as possible. The Friday prior to the Show, Tim and a group of willing helpers collect the lambs and take them to the Showgrounds for judging the next day. The lambs are judged on the hoof, with prizes up for grabs for first, second and third, as well as some category prizes. The lambs are trucked to the works on Sunday, and the Malvern A&P Show Association receive the generous funds these lambs make. People do not have to pre-enter this class, so if you have a lamb you would like to enter and donate it’s not too late, get in touch with Malvern A&P Show Secretary, Rebecca Stewart , and she can put you in touch with Tim. As long as Tim is aware of your lamb before Friday, March 24th, he will arrange for it to be collected. Let's get as many people as possible to support this fabulous class and help raise vital funds while enjoying some friendly competition.

FARMLANDS CUP
As well as encouraging school entries in Art sections, the Malvern A&P Show committee love to encourage as many entries as possible in all children’s classes. They like to boost participation from young people in the district. So, in 2021 the Farmlands School Cup was launched. The Cup was kindly donated by Farmlands and sponsored by the Barnhill Family
This initiative was a great way for children in the area, to not only do well for the collective good of their school, but also to compete in their own right. Malvern students who are twelve years and under can enter for themselves
individually, as well as for their school, There are no entry fees for these students and late entries will be taken up to show day.
The school or educator who gains the highest combined tally for eligible classes, will be presented at a later date with the Farmlands Cup, as well as $150 prize money.

PROUD TO BE A SUPPORTER OF OUR LOCAL SHOW!
ROBBIE THE GOOSEROOTER
Geraldine-born and bred, Robbie Shefford is driven to get people sharing and talking about their mental health, he also likes helping communities work together. Standing at a towering six foot four, his personality is just as immense. He laughs that one of the worst bits of advice he ever received growing up was, ‘Eat your veggies; you will grow up big and strong’. His reply to that was, “I grew up big and fat. So not useful advice.”
Robbie has quite the social media following for his Truck This and Truck That channel, which saw his down-to-earth personality connect with a diverse audience. His original Truck This and Truck That Facebook page was hacked, so he launched Gooserooter at Truck This and Truck That. Robbie relates to all demographics, calling a spade a spade. While that doesn’t necessarily please everyone, or make him well-liked, that’s who he is.
His refusal to pander to popular opinion and his straight-forward attitude to most problems in life have seen his appeal spread with tens of thousands of online followers and becoming an increasingly well-recognised face (and voice) at rural events around the country.
Widely known as Gooserooter, his nickname came about after an incident involving a brokendown Kenworth A gooseneck trailer and several jammed fingers, back when he was working as the onsite engineer and mechanic for Rural Transport in Ashburton. Having shared videos and photos
of his various truck and tractor projects on social media for numerous years, Robbie has always been prone to having a yarn with his audiences and frequently sidetracks off on a tangent. His sense of humour is always to the fore, but he never likes to shy away from honest conversations or sharing his flaws and emotions.
One experience in particular, while working for the fire service, had a major impact on his life and started him talking openly about mental health and depression.
Robbie quickly discovered that his conversations struck a chord with many. So, he kept talking and kept sharing.
His goal is to spread the word and some positivity around love, life and mental health.
“There are some great services out there for people, and it’s important to keep getting the message out there, particularly to some of these small towns that can sometimes get forgotten about. I think it’s important to front up and speak

Local entrepreneur, Wilbur Morrison and business partner Edward Eaton have set the mead world alight with their Buzz Club products. This pair are using lesser-known New Zealand honeys to create delicious meads, a drink popularised by the hit television series Game of Thrones.
Ever since Wilbur was young he has had a fascination with bees, after visiting a neighbour’s farm in Sheffield, on a school trip. He vividly remembers a frame being taken from a hive and everyone
BUZZ CLUB BUZZING
being able to poke their finger through the honeycomb to get a big scoop of fresh honey. The sweet honey and or sugar rush took hold, and with it, Wilbur’s interest in bees.
In 2016, an opportunity for Wilbur to start beekeeping arose, and he spent the next summer on the West Coast learning the trade. He did everything bee related for the summer and took over managing the hives the next year.
What hooked Wilbur the most was the symbiotic, perfect
relationship between plants and bees. After a few years of beekeeping, the issues in the industry become clearer to him. Manuka was fetching record prices locally and internationally, but other native plants that rely on pollination had been forgotten about, causing the market to plummet for these items. This saw many beekeepers walk away from their hives. Wilbur was determined to find a solution for the forgotten honeys. Around this time he started experimenting with fermentation and got in touch with long-time friend, Edward, who was keen to help find a solution to the problem.
The pair started brewing in Wilbur’s dad's (Pete Morrison ) back office as there was a heat pump that helped keep the room at a constant temperature (this is required to control the fermentation process), and the space included a wee kitchenette also. They spent every viable minute working on their product. After hundreds of trials, they decided to approach a local craft brewery in Christchurch to help them scale up. There were a few challenges in changing the batches to commercial size, but nothing that could deter the pair. They asked friends and family for feedback before starting more batches to perfect their product.
The only ingredients used in Buzz Club premium sparkling meads are honey, fruit, and water.
“We use modern brewing techniques to perfect our mead, adding a dash of water ahead of fermentation to balance the weight and flavour profile of the finished product,” commented Wilbur.
“It’s no secret that mānuka honey has commanded plenty of global attention over the last ten years, but there are so many beautiful honeys native to Aotearoa that deserve the spotlight just as much. The kāmahi, rātā and pōhutukawa honeys in our sparkling mead support not only bees and their beekeepers but
the integrity of our native forests. Bees are critical to the pollination process within our ngahere (forest) and encourage continued biodiversity,” said Edward. Having recently moved their operation to Two Thumb’s state -of-the-art solar-powered brewery, Buzz Club continues to flourish, with plans to crack the Australian market this year.
“It feels amazing to have come so far in such a short space of time. We’re really only getting startedmead is having a moment, and we’re thrilled to be able to shine a spotlight on the great native honeys that make Buzz Club sparkling meads what they are,” Wilbur added.
The range includes five meads produced by Buzz Club, these are sold in bars, restaurants, through
retailers and online.
They are now also in a pop-up bar in Christchurch’s stunning Riverside Market, allowing locals and visitors to the city to enjoy their range in the relaxed surroundings of the market. Signature cocktails using the mead as a key ingredient are also on offer.
“The bar has been packed most of the summer. We love having the opportunity to share what we do with people and explain that what they’re sipping not only tastes great, it also helps create a future for our native forests,” Wilbur concluded.

METHVEN SCARECROW TRAIL
HumptyDumptysatona?Little MissMuffetsatona?LittleJack Hornersatinthe?
For most of us, Nursery Rhymes are part of our childhood memories, and we can easily recall the endings to the above lines.
Each year during the April school holidays, members of the Methven community build scarecrows to a particular theme. These scarecrows are then scattered around Methven township for children and families to locate and identify the name of the characters represented by each scarecrow.
The theme for this year’s scarecrow creations is, you guessed it, ‘Famous Nursery Rhyme Characters’.
The choice of this theme is in itself an exercise in nostalgia.
The very first Methven Scarecrow
Trail was held as part of a Methven Walking Festival in 2006, which had Nursery Rhyme Characters as the theme. The Scarecrow Trail ran for another five years with different themes until it was discontinued in 2011. A local mother and daughter team, Gillian Heald and Karyn Robertson decided to bring the Trail back to life in 2013, choosing Famous Nursery Rhymes themes for their first event. The child and family focused theme worked well as a school holiday activity, and the Scarecrow Trail has continued with child-friendly themes, becoming increasingly popular and growing from around 1,000 participants in 2013 to 3,000 last year.
Ten years on from the 2013 revival and the 2023 Scarecrow Trail is once again part of an exciting Methven and Foothills Walking Festival which runs for Easter and the first week of the school holidays. There will be something for everyone, with fifteen different walks. You could also book yourself in to experience the fantastic Opuke Hot Pools while you are in town. If you need to fuel up there is a great range of restaurants and cafes in Methven.
The Scarecrow Trail runs for the entire school holidays (April 8th - April 23rd). There will be sponsored prizes for the most correct entries and the most popular scarecrows. So bring out your inner child and take your children to this year’s event in Methven. Trail Map/ Entry forms are available from the iHub Information Centre.

BOWLS DARFIELD RAISED FUNDS
Due to heavy rain, Bowls Darfield had to cancel their annual One Day Tournament on Sunday, March 5th.
This event is always well supported with a lunch and raffle, with fantastic prizes donated by sponsors. The local sponsors who had donated prizes for the Tournament kindly advised the Club to keep the prizes, so on Saturday, March 11th, Bowls Darfield decided to have a dinner, and raffle off the prizes to raise funds for Cyclone Gabrielle Relief.
After very enjoyable games of mixed triples in the afternoon,
players and their partners enjoyed a game or two of Cornhole, and a nice dinner. Lots of laughs and a crazy auction or two followed with the end result being that Bowls Darfield raised

The Darfield Premier Cricket team travelled to Cheviot for the final round-robin match of the season with nothing on the line, as a top four finish had already been secured.
Batting first on a green, seaming wicket was a difficult task for Darfield, made more challenging with several representative players away.
Their total of 124 from 39 overs was arguably acceptable considering the surface, but Tom Dempster (29) and Jayden McIntyre (33) especially will be disappointed not to have made more from their starts.
Cheviot generously gifted 25 wides, and Will Anderson picked up 5 wickets for 41 runs. The second innings was a 3-part drama. Scott Burnett smacked
52 runs, and his team raced to 52/2. Darfield made a spirited fight back to take control of the match as the hosts slumped to 99/9, with Liam Foulkes grabbing 5 wickets for 33 runs. The final part saw a 25 run partnership for the last wicket, as an injured Johnny Fitzpatrick guided his team to a tie with a booming 6, and the win was delivered with a wide.

People have always names children after expensive things; Mercedes, Dior, Chardonnay. By Christmas watch out for names like Electric, Gas and Petrol.
A lady was arrested for shoplifting. When she went before the judge he asked her, “What did you steal?” “She replied a can of peaches.”
The judge asked why and she said she was hungry. The he asked her how many peaches were in the can. She replied 6. The judge said. “Then I will give you 6 days in jail.”
The husband quickly stood up and said to the judge, “she also stole 3 cans of peas!!”
