CHILDREN’S DAY FUN

Selwyn Parenting Network (SPN) couldn’t bring the sun to Malvern, but they certainly bought the fun! Darfield played host to SPNs inaugural Malvern Children’s Day last Sunday. Hundreds of families from all over the district poured through the doors of the Darfield Recreation Centre to enjoy the free activities and family fun on o er, to celebrate Children’s Day New Zealand. Not even the relentless weekend rain could dampen the spirits of young and old, who enjoyed the five large inflatables, henna and air spray tattoo art, face painting, sensory play, balloon animals, soft play andasmallanimalspetzone. Speaking of the success, SPNs Operations and Event organiser Kate Webb Kate Webb Kate Kate Webb said,“Ahighlightfor me was the space occupied by Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade and Darfield Playcentre, who epitomised community spirit in all that they did. The fun activities not only taught the children valuable life skills, but also served as afuture modelling of how extraordinarily rewarding volunteering can be. Darfield

Playcentre raised just shy of $800 through their incredible bake sale, with all funds being donated to Wairoa Playcentre to distributeto their familiesasand when they need to, following the devastationoflastmonth.

“Bringing this event directly to families of Malvern was truly appreciated. We were blown away by the number of families that commented on the ‘relief and joy’ it brought them to have a totally free event where

tamariki could just blend in with equality to their peers whilst having the time of their lives.

“A special thanks goes to Malvern Community Board, Selwyn District Council, Malvern Estates and Fleur Earl Fleur Earl Earl Earl at Darfield Recreation Centre,” Kate concluded.

CHILDREN’S DAY AT TRINITY

Malvern Co-operating Church hosted Children's Day in 2021, and during Covid, families celebrated children at home within their bubbles. But two years, nothing could dampen the 2023 Children's Day, not even thedrizzlyweather!

Inside Trinity Church, rays of sunshine beamed through from the children and adults present. We were blessed with children sharing their gifts, Joe JoeJoe Joe who makes models inspired by a movie and his love for Lego. Lorenzo's Lorenzo's Lorenzo's bountiful garden has inspired his love for veges, eating what he has planted (he has even grown red corn!) He shares his vegetables with neighboursandthecommunity. Beautiful tambourine dancing from Maddy Maddy inspired the congregation to wave their arms andclap.

SELWYN RUGBY CLUBS’ 50TH CELEBRATION

The Selwyn Rugby Club based in the Glentunnel Domain is due to celebrate its 50th Anniversary, a yearlateduetoCovid.

The Club was formed in March 1972, when Hororata and the Black Diamonds (Glentunnel, Coalgate, Whitecli s) Clubs amalgamated due to the lack of support for both Clubs. The Selwyn River was the dividing boundary line between the two Clubs and helped formed the combinedClub'sname.

The Club has seen afew changes over the years. Originally they were able to field senior teams, but as life changes and people relocate the Club hasn’t had a senior team since 2013, which wasaDivision3team.

Therehavebeenacoupleofwell -known players that have connections to the Club,

D Symon D Symon aplayerfromthe1977 Senior Reserve team has represented New Zealand in both rugby as a Colt and in rowing for the New Zealand Eights. He was also a member of the Canterbury Rugby team.

Pete McAndrew Pete McAndrew Pete McAndrew represented Canterbury in the Under 18 team and was Captain for the Mid CanterburyNPCteam.

Now the Club only fields enthusiastic junior teams who are striving to be just like past successfulplayers.

The Club combined forces with the netball and cricket clubs to build new clubrooms, which

were started in 1993 and were completed in 1995. The clubrooms were largely built by volunteerlabour.

The Anniversary will see a few events take place, Friday, March 31st will be a casual evening catch-up where everyone can mix and mingle. On Saturday, there will be a Golden Oldies game and possibly some She eld/Selwyn junior games. EXECUTOR EXPENDITURE

Every dollar paid in executor expenses is a dollar denied to thebeneficiariesoftheEstate.

An Executor is a trusted individual that administers the deceased’s estate. The job doesn’t come with a manual, nor with payment in many circumstances. With the costs of almost everything seemingly on the rise, we remind you of the KellermanCase.

Mr Kellerman Mr Kellerman Mr Kellerman died in 2018. His Will, just one page long, appointeddaughter Margaret Margaret (of London)asexecutor, leftagiftof $70,000, and the balance of the estate, after deducting all the usual expenses, to be divided equally among his three children.

A primary issue prompting the litigation was the expenses

charged by Margaret to the estate. These expenses included return business class airfares between New Zealand and the United Kingdom on three occasions for herself and her husband, a fourth business class trip where she has charged a percentage of her airfare, luxury accommodation (including the costs of breakfast), and the costs of lunch and dinner for herself and her husband during their relatively extensive stays in New Zealand. The ‘executor expenses’ and ‘property clearance’ costs came to $97,976 - against an estate with a total value of $560,927 it is easy to see why these costs were held to be unreasonable. The starting point is that an executor is obliged to act gratuitously. This means that they are not usually paid for

their time spent in administering anestate.

Executors are entitled to be paid back all that they have had to pay out. It is one of the fundamental rights that costs and expenses properly incurred intheadministrationofanestate are compensable out of the assetsoftheestate.

All expenses must be properly andreasonablyincurred.

We are here to serve our clients during their lifetimes and beyond. The best interests of your beneficiaries are at the forefront of what our Estates Team does. Get in contact with us if you require any advice from Estate Planning to Estate Administration.

The pattern can be collected from the Darfield Library or the Malvern News o ce, found in the show catalogue or downloaded from the showday online site (select Malvern show 2023-documentsanddownloads).

Kiwi Family Trust was started in Christchurch in 2009 by Barbara Aitkin Barbara Aitkin Aitkin Aitkin, who saw the need to help Plunket get babies and children under 5 into woollen clothing. It also gave knitters who live aloneorinahomeapurposeandinclusiontohelp combat social isolation. This fantastic initiative started with only a handful of knitters, but now it has expanded to over 500 around New Zealand. Over 11,000 items were given to lucky recipients

in2020/2021.

The Kiwi Family Trust has now grown into a nationwide project providing warm clothes, blankets and other necessary items, as well as other community projects such as mentoring, seminars and youth camps through Plunket. It takes a village, midwives, Cancer society, Resettlement services, rural mothers groups and pre-schools to help keep this fantastic initiative movingalong.

DRFC CLUBROOMS RE-OPENED

Darfield Rugby Football Club (DRFC) had been wanting to renovate their clubrooms for a long time, in particular the kitchen and bar areas. They planned to start the makeover in late 2021/early 2022, however, it was delayed due to the gib shortage. The Club was finally able to get the renovations underway as soon as the 2022 rugbyseasonfinished.

The renovations are now complete, providing DRFC with a brand new kitchen that is larger and more functional than the old kitchen. They also have top of the range appliances that will make it a lot easier to cater for teams during home games and allow them to o er di erent food options to members and visitors.

“The kitchen is a much needed and used asset within our facility and it will prove to be beneficial not only for the members of our Club but also for all members of the Darfield and wider Malvern community. The clubrooms are a popular venue for local businesses to hire for functions and learning conferences,” commented Club Co-ordinator and Promotions Manager, Rebecca Kennedy Rebecca Kennedy Rebecca Kennedy Rebecca Kennedy.

“Along with the kitchen, we have added more storage areas and

created a new bar area. We have also re-painted the rest of the clubrooms and refreshed the woodwork, added a baby changing area to the women's toilets and updated the sound andprojectorsystem.

“We were really lucky and grateful to receive a significant amount of funding from the local Westview Fund that contributed to the majority of the building work being completed, we also received funds from The One Foundation for the sound and alarm system and repainting/ redecorating of the rest of the clubrooms. The Club also used funds that had been raised by

numerous fundraisers over the years.

“The Clubrooms were o cially re -opened by Club Patron John John John John Creamer Creamer Creamer on Thursday, March 2nd. We had a great turnout to the re-opening and were pleased that everyone could finally see the changes that have been made.

“Sheldon Sheldon Sheldon and the rest of the DRFC committee, club members and the local businesses involvedhaveworkedaroundthe clock for months to bring the renovations to fruition, and we are really excited to share it with everyone,”Rebeccaconcluded.

DARFIELD PREMIER CRICKET

Darfield gathered 7 points and beat the rain in a dominant encounter against PeninsulaHarbour at Darfield Domain, last Saturday.

With a poor forecast, the plan was to bowl first, dismiss the visitors for as little as possible then quickly reach the target beforetheskyopenedup.

Peninsula-Harbour obliged by electing to bat first and crawled their way to a total of 92 from 34 overs, after Nick Jenkins Nick Jenkins Nick Nick put the brakes on with miserly figures of 9 overs, 4 maidens, 8 runs and 2 wickets. Light drizzle fell briefly, and the umpires should be complimented for continuingplay.

Top wicket taker Will Will Will Greenslade Greenslade helped himself to a bag of 5 as he bowled 7.4 overs, 4 of them maidens for only 11 runs. Akhil Pant Akhil Pant Akhil Pant Akhil Pant was the only

batter to o er much with a patient 40, nearly half his side's runs.

Nick Gilbert Nick Nick Gilbert (15) and Robbie Robbie Foulkes Foulkes Foulkes (19) made a brisk start in reply, taking Darfield to 37 before Foulkes was bowled by David Neal David Neal Neal. Neal took a further 2 wickets as the in-form Frew brothers fell for single digit scores respectively. Ryan Ryan Hughes Hughes Hughes Hughes (19*) and a returning Tom Dempster Tom Dempster Tom (16*) took the side home with some powerful blows over the boundary just as the sky began to darken to end the game in the 21st over with a bonuspointsecured.
