“After catching Covid for the first time in early January (four weeks before race day), leading into the race I was feeling very flat and apprehensive if starting

the race would even be a wise idea. So I did an ECG and blood tests the week before to ensure I wasn’t making any mistakes. Day 1 went well, myself and two others broke away from the lead bunch with 50km to go in the first cycle stage. At this point, we managed to hold a gap of 3 minutes into the MountainRun.

RESTORED HISTORY

Sammy Sammy Sammy Sammy from Hororata based Sammy’s Rust n Custom has recently restored a vintage Noddy Train that has a huge amount of sentimental value to him. The Train was originally built for his grandmother by McKay’s Hire in Ferry Road Christchurch in the 1960s, used for attending Santa and Brighton Parades, along with company picnics. Sammy’s grandmother later gifted it to an orphanage in Christchurch. It then bounced around a few circus groups as an attraction/act, and in the 1990s it sat out in a field by the Mcleans Island hill before it disappearedintheearly2000s. Sammy managed to locate it in Greta Valley in May 2022, complete with the carriage. He started to restore the Train on December 28th2022,finishingit twenty five days later in time for Muscle Car Madness, with help from friends and family. It recentlyattendedtheSummerin SelwynPicnicinHororataalso.

“There has been talk about it being wanted to attend this year’s Santa Parade. It will now be an icon that will live forever, and I’ll take it to as many places asIcan,”commentedSammy.

HELP PREVENT CRIME

Coalgate township is trying to raise $18,000 for thirteen securitycamerasfortheentrance points to Coalgate, in a bid to helppreventcrime.

The Coalgate Residents Committee was approached by the Police and the Malvern Community Patrol about putting in cameras. Approximately, forty businesses between Kirwee and She eld were canvassed two years ago about installing security cameras, and no one wasagainstit.

The idea of the cameras is to provide Police with another tool they can use should a crime be committed. Only the Police can view the footage, and then they can use the information to help assistinsolvinganycrimes.

Coalgate Residents Committee Chair Daryl Smith Daryl Smith Daryl Smith Daryl Smith said, “getting cameras at the entrance points to the township is one of the community’sprojectsfor2023.

“We’ve budgeted about $18,000 for it, and as soon as we obtain

enough funds the cameras will certainlybegoingahead.

The committee changed from being a township committee under the umbrella of the Selwyn District Council at the start of the year, which means the new organisation can now apply for funding from sources the former entity wasn’t permittedto.

“We have earmarked $1,000 from our discretionary fund, and I believewehave$1,500coming in from the Malvern Community Board, butweintendonapplying to a few funding organisations like pub charities. The committee also plans to approach Coalgate businesses and locals to see if they would be willing to contribute," Daryl concluded.

STEAK COOK-OFF ASSN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Locals, Chris McLaren Chris McLaren Chris McLaren and his son Nic NicNic Nic have won the right to compete in the 2023 Steak Cook-o Association World Championship in Texas on March 13th. The pair have been competing in the SCA-RUN Barbeque competitions around New Zealand. These events have two categories, the main event (Steak Cook-o ) and an ancillary event (these can be drinks, anything with a certain item for example sausage meat, burgers, tacos and the list goes on). Both categories have golden tickets available for the winners of theseevents.

“I won both category golden tickets last year. I placed second in the ancillary with a drink that contained Bacardi. The person who won already had a ticket, so it rolled down to me,” commentedChris.

“I didn’t actually get my steak golden ticket from winning a competition. My name was read out during a global livestream event in Texas at New Year.

They announced the top ten competitors from the ten competing regions, and I was very surprised when I heard my name sitting in third spot for the New Zealand section, and they announced I had a ticket to competeinthesteakcategory.

“Getting an invite to the world championships is a huge honour and an opportunity you can’t miss,”Chrisadded.

Nic has only been competing for a very short time, winning his golden ticket at BBQ’s Direct in November last year, in the ancillary category. Once both Chris and Nic had golden tickets, it wasn’t a hard decision to decide to go. It will be a battle

between the pair as both are there to beat each other and takeontheworldsbest. This father/son duo have been busy fundraising to raise approximately $3,500 each to gettothecompetition.

FANTASTIC CLAY MASK

Apalgeó (meaning feel no pain or to ease pain) is an Oxford based company that has partnered with New Zealand Glacial Clay to bring you a quality, all natural Glacial Clay Mask.

The Mask, is made from a mineral-rich, pure green clay that was formed over three million years ago, beneath a glacial lake, in the pristine South Island (located in the Southern Alps and processed in Coalgate). This unique deposit was formed through the combination of volcanic ash from Banks Peninsula being deposited into a freshwater glacial lake at the foothillsoftheSouthernAlps. Only during recent testing has the clay been identified as a mineral-rich green Nontronite healing clay which is a subclass of the smectite clay group and is very rare. The deposit is extremely remote, allowing it to remain pure, consistent and unaltered. Nothing is added (organic and chemical free) in the extraction and processing of theresource.

The overall clay resource consists of several million tonnes and averages about sixty metres deep. Other clay deposits around the world are typically between 1m to 3m thick, with the top third usually contaminated with sand, which makes it inconsistent and difficulttoensurepurity.

The Glacial Clay Mask detoxifies and delivers essential minerals such as Iron, Silica and Calcium, with Mamaku Fern, Kawakawa, Aloe Vera and Olive Oil helping to soothe and soften your skin, making this clay the perfect skin treatment, unlike any face mask youhavetriedbefore.

This luxury clay mask nourishes your skin to help prevent premature ageing. It is designed

for all skin types, and is 100% natural, pH neutral, revitalising and fresh. It is packaged in an elegant 100gm retail jar containing 10-20 facial treatments.

Apalgeó’s, main goal is to source high quality New Zealand made products they know people are going to love. If you have a productthatyoubelieveApalgeó could help with, feel free to contactthem.

PREMIER CRICKET REPORT

Darfield collected full points in a onesided2-dayeragainstOhoka, where they wrapped things up in thelasthalfhourofplay.

Ohoka won the toss and in an attempt to control the pace of the game elected to bat first. Regret was instant as they slumped to 14/3 as Tom Innes, RyanHughesandRobbieFoulkes took 1 each. The middle order farednobetter, evenasthepitch flattenedout underthesun.74/6 soon turned into 93 all out as Hughestook 4,andLiamFoulkes set attacking fields to end the

innings.

In reply, Darfield lost an early wicket, but the in-form Robbie Foulkes and Jordy Frew each made scores in the 70s to rub out Ohoka's first innings score and take their team to a lead of 139 when Foulkes declared the inningsclosedat232/6. Ohoka's task was to bat out the rest of the day with the loss of as few wickets as possible. They were at a good chance to achieve that goal and perhaps force Darfield to bat again next Saturday, but at 48/1, the

innings imploded as Ryan Hughes, Nick Jenkins and Liam Foulkes created a team collapse. Ohoka were dismissed for 82 runs leaving them to lose by an innings and 57 runs. A proper thrashing inside 1-day. With the Premier team earning Saturday o , the Senior B side will be the main event for Club Day to be hosted at Darfield Domain on Saturday, February 18th.

THE WILLIAM PIKE CHALLENGE

Darfield High School (DHS) has partnered with the William Pike William Pike William Pike William Pike Challenge this year. This programme will help prepare tamariki for the Challenges that they will face tomorrow - today! Approximately, 150 Year 7 students from DHS will get the opportunity to be part of this programmein2023. Students will learn skills needed to cope with the unexpected and develop strengths they didn’t know they had. Children need to step outside of the classroom to really develop skills such as leadership, responsibility, creativity, social skills and communityinvolvement. Students will develop passion projects to build focus and commitment. Giving them the framework to make choices and decisions, then develop and implement actions to bring their projects to fruition provides an essential foundation for later in life.

Manystudentswhocompletethe William Pike Challenge find their relationships with fellow students, teachers and even parents improve because they learn di erent approaches than with what they grew up with or areusedtocurrently.

With the William Pike Challenge, students are challenged in ways that simply can’t be achieved inside the classroom. It’s strength lies in taking students outside of their comfort zone to solve problems or deal with situations they never expected, but at same time they have fun doingit!

William Pike’s love of exploring the great outdoors began at a young age and was developed further at Westlake Boys’ High School where he was an avid sportsman - a three-time

national water polo championanddevelopedazeal foroutdoor pursuits. In 2006, William graduated with a Bachelor of Education with first-class honours and began a fulfilling career as an Auckland primary schoolteacher.

A year later, on September 25th, 2007, William climbed Mt Ruapehu with a friend, James James James Christie Christie Christie. On their way back down, in fading light they decided to stay the night in the Dome Shelter. That evening, Ruapehu erupted. It shot an epic amount of rocks, water and mud down its slopes, crashing violently onto their hut. Crushed and critically injured, William hung onto life while James ran downthemountaintogethelp. Almost 24 hours later, William woke up in Waikato Hospital and although he survived, his right leg had to be amputated below the knee and he faced a long, gruellingrehabilitation. William learned to walk again with a prosthetic limb, he returned to teaching, returned to Mt Ruapehu and he now lives lifefullofadventure.

What William eventually learnt

from his Mt Ruapehu experience was, when you’re faced with challenge and change, success or failure comes down to one thing - whether you are already prepared to step outside your comfort zone or whether you’re not.

DHS are looking for community groupsthatwouldliketosupport this great initiative. Each student has to complete at least one passion project, this is a sport or hobby that they have not tried before. If anyone in the area is interested in helping please reach out to am@darfield.school.nz

Parents, students, supporters and community groups are invited to meet Williamand hearabout his life journey and the programme he has created, on Thursday, March 9th at 5.30pm in the Darfield High School Hall. There will be refreshments and a light snack afterwards. For catering purposes please RSVP to: sport@darfield.school.nz

A special thanks must go to the Westview Special Fund for helping DHS make this fantastic programmeavailablethisyear.

SUCCESSFUL FUNDRAISER

The Kirwee Community Hall Association joined forces with theKirweeBowlingClubtoruna

Charity Bowling Tournament on Waitangi Day, inviting anyone from the communitytotake part.

The call was answered from as far away as Methven, and the

event attracted enough players tofillthegreen.

The day was another hot one, which meant the bar was kept busy. After three games of bowls that were punctuated by much hilarity, the catering team provided a meal of barbecued

meat, bread, potatoes and a range of tasty salads, with cake tofollow.

The purpose of the fundraising exercise was to gather enough funds to complete the refurbishment of the Hall kitchen, which was damaged followingawaterleak duringthe first Lockdown, and the Committee is optimistic that it has achieved its aim, thanks to the entry fees, ra es, silent auction, sponsorship and donations. The organisers sincerely thank the many supporters who made this fundraisersuchasuccess.

A German Shepherd, a Doberman, and a cat died. In heaven, all three faced God, who wanted to know what they believed in.

The German Shepherd said, “I believe in discipline, training, and loyalty to my master.”

“Good!” said God, “Sit at my right side. Doberman, what do you believe in?” The Doberman answered,” I believe in the love, care and protection of my master.”

“Aha” said God, “You may sit to my left.”

God looked at the cat and asked, “And what do you believe in?” The cat replied, “I believe you are sitting in my seat.”
