Well known Darfield local, Nathan Carter recently received his Duke of Edinburgh Award, which he completed over three years.

There are three sections to the Award; Bronze, Silver and Gold, with different activities having to be accomplished for each category within a section.

Nathan completed parts of the three sections on camps, as well as attending Outward Bound and Spirit of Adventure.

He has gained numerous skills while achieving this Award, completed hours of voluntary community services, as well as running and raising money for charities. Nathan has learnt lots of new talents, including playing musical instruments, driving a car, employment and flatting skills and much more. facing many challenges with perseverance and great determination.

Nathan is very proud of himself, and likewise, his family and friends are beyond proud of the amazing young man he is.

The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award / Hillary Award Aotearoa New Zealand - Te Tohu Aonui a Te Tiuka o Erinipua / Te Paraihe o Hillary Aotearoa New Zealand is part of a worldwide network that provides young people with a balanced, noncompetitive programme of individual challenge through which they can make constructive use of their leisure time.

The Award programme provides a framework for personal discovery and growth through Service, Skills, Physical Recreation and Adventurous Journeys; developing perseverance, responsibility to self and the community. Individuals or organisations can use this framework, with its three levels, to provide individual challenge and achievement for young people between the ages of fourteen and twenty five.

Congratulations Nathan on this fantastic achievement.

Many of us will remember the game: “Here is the Church, here is the steeple, open the door and see all the people”.

The Malvern Cooperating Parish and Malvern Anglican Parish are opening the Trinity Church doors this Sunday, January 29th, for our Combined Parish Service at 9.30am.

The service is to thank and acknowledge the support of not only our congregations, but many throughout our community who contributed towards the repairs we needed for the roof at Trinity Church.

While it took time to work through the expected and some unexpected processes for building requirements and permits, the easiest part was working with Galletly Builders, who did a sterling job, working hard to complete everything within the time they were contracted to do so. We are

THANK YOU

enormously grateful to them for their efficiency in what has been a challenging time for the New Zealand building industry.

During the repairs, the congregations used the nearby Trinity Hall for weekly services. One service highlight, in particular, was the Blessing of the Animals, with several wellbehaved four-legged friends joining us!

Along with the amazing contributions from our

respective Malvern Anglican and Malvern Cooperating Parishes, many individuals and businesses generously supported us, we would like to say a huge thank you to you all. We welcome our wonderful community to join us to celebrate and “raise the roof” this Sunday!

Cecilia Pascoe, Chairperson, Malvern Cooperating Parish Council.

NEW BUSINESS - CUT CLOTHING

Darfield local, Jayne Moore, has recently started up a new business called CUT Clothing. Jayne is well-known in the beauty industry, and her passion is to help women look and feel great - so combining beauty with fashion is a transition that naturally blended for her. She loves being a part of a community of women who appreciate style and want to look and feel good.

CUT Clothing is a family run business owned by Jayne, with the support of her husband Kurt and their sons - Angus and Madoc

“I grew up in Darfield, within a large family of eight, with a gorgeous Mother who would never leave the house without putting some lipstick on and some ‘tidy clothes’ despite being in the garden all day (her passion). Even at 85 years old, she always looks glam,” commented Jayne.

“Suffice to say, I learnt early on that looking good means feeling good, and beauty and fashion are one of the keys to this formula.

“In my early teens, fashion and beauty quickly became my focus, so I drifted towards beauty in my early twenties and successfully owned and ran salons for close to twenty years.

“I love helping my customers, and I am adamant that my years

in beauty gave me endless insight into colours, looks and how to make women feel good in their own skin.

“I'd love to give people style support and welcome any shape, size or age with open arms,” continued Jayne.

“I have a wide variety of labels for you to ensure CUT Clothing suits all styles, and I welcome suggestions on what might be a great addition to our collections.

I can't wait to help you and offer a personalised service to ensure you feel confident in your new wardrobe, so feel free to contact me or visit one of our Pop-Up shops.

“I can help you by giving outfit inspiration, trend updates and insights you will enjoy via social media and email subscriptions.

“Make sure you sign up to become a CUT Clothing follower on Facebook.

“Feel free to send me an email (info@cutclothing.co.nz) and tell me your fashion stories, your style and what your needs and wants are. I am here to help you,” concluded Jayne.

THE SMALL PRINT

Te Huanui kicks off its 2023 programme with a national touring exhibition ‘The Small Print’, running from this Friday, January 27th - Thursday, February 23rd.

‘The Small Print’ is an initiative developed by the Print Council of Aotearoa New Zealand (PCANZ) to raise awareness of contemporary printmaking in New Zealand. Members of PCANZ are invited annually to create an A4-sized print to tour the country. It’s believed this is the first time that ‘The Small Print’ has been shown in the Selwyn District, having visited neighbouring districts on previous occasions. At A4 size, unframed and all priced at $100, the works are a great way to add original artwork to your home.

North Island-based co-ordinators for the PCANZ, Julz Henderson and Rosalie Thompson , run a very well-oiled machine, with the exhibition being a great project for Te Huanui to organise as a first show of the year. Malvern Community Arts Council is thrilled to have developed this relationship and looks forward to

seeing work in future exhibitions also.

Alongside ‘The Small Prints’, Te Huanui is hosting a two-hour drop-in printmaking workshop on Sunday, February 12th, between 1pm and 3pm. Tutored by local printmakers, Soon-Lee Spicer , Asako Ridgen and Margaret White, everyone is welcome to drop in, have a go and catch the creative bug that is printmaking, taking inspiration from the works on display at the same time. Activities running will be craft foam prints, embossing from linocuts and Lego prints. Entry is by gold coin donation, with parents required to be onsite to supervise their children.

Te Huanui is grateful for the support of the Selwyn District Creative Communities Scheme to bring a national touring exhibition and workshops to our local community.

TRUST DEED UP TO SPEED

Monday, January 30th 2023 marks the two-year anniversary of the ‘new’ Trusts Act 2019. Despite it already being two years since the Trusts Act came into effect, we are still seeing Trusts where no action has been taken to bring the Trust up to speed. To ensure your Trust is fit for purpose and to limit your personal liability as a trustee, get in contact with the Tavendale and Partners (TP) team.

The Act provides us with a list of trustee duties that must be adhered to. These duties are intended to protect beneficiaries, help provide consistency in Trust administration, and from them, we have built best practice standards.

The mandatory duties for trustees are that they must:

• Know the terms of the Trust.

• Act in accordance with those Trust terms.

• Act honestly and in good faith.

• Act for the benefit of beneficiaries or the Trust’s purpose.

• Exercise their powers for a proper purpose.

In addition to the mandatory trustee duties, the Act sets out a

list of default duties that apply to trustees unless they are specifically excluded by the Trust Deed. The default duties are as follows:

• Exercise reasonable skill and care.

• Invest prudently.

• Do not exercise trustee powers for their own benefit.

• Consider actively and regularly whether the trustee should be exercising one or more of the trustee’s powers.

• Do not bind or commit trustees to a future exercise of discretion.

• Avoid conflicts of interest.

• Act impartially.

• Do not profit from their position.

• Do not act for reward.

• Act unanimously. We are often asked about beneficiary disclosure obligations and whether trustees should maintain a Trust or whether it should now be wound up. The answer to these questions is, of course, very specific to the particular Trust and set of circumstances. Our advice, on whether a Trust remains worth retaining, will, among other things, take into account what the Trust was settled for - what was

its purpose? Is this purpose still valid? Is the Trust still an effective tool in meeting this objective?

Our team takes an individualised approach to meet your needs when it comes to your Trust, ensuring that it is managed effectively to fulfil your objectives and it remains robust and compliant.

GOODSAM APP

Emergency services may be many minutes away. If you know how to do CPR - and perhaps how to use a defibrillator - are you prepared to respond where there's a need?

The GoodSAM (Good Smartphone Activated Medics) App lets you respond to a cardiac incident within a kilometre of you wherever you happen to be: at

home, in the street or driving down the road.

The App is now available in New Zealand, supported by St John, Wellington Free Ambulance and the National Cardiac Network. Imagine you were off-duty and someone near you suffered a cardiac arrest. You were in a position to respond and help but just needed to be alerted. Wouldn't you want to know? Well, now you can. Outcomes from cardiac arrest are best when the patient receives immediate CPR and defibrillation within the first five minutes.

Emergency services can’t always arrive within five minutes, but it is likely that someone who knows how to perform CPR and use an AED is nearby and just unaware that they are close to a patient in cardiac arrest.

People who know how to perform CPR and use an AED, and who are prepared to voluntarily respond to a patient suspected to be in cardiac arrest, are able to register as a ‘responder’ on the website and download the app on their phone.

If a GoodSAM responder is within 1,000 metres of a suspected cardiac arrest they will receive an alert via their phone giving them the opportunity to respond. The App also shows responders the location of the incident and the known closest AEDs. The more people who download the App, the more coverage we will achieve across New Zealand and the more likely we are to improve outcomes from cardiac arrest.

How to sign up as a responder:

1. Make sure you have a clear photo of your drivers license or passport for uploading.

2. Follow this link in your web browser: www.goodsamapp.org/regResponder

3. Under verifying organisation select ‘New Zealand: Public’.

4. By signing up you agree to the Terms and Conditions.

5. Download the responder app from Google Play, Apple, or Microsoft and use the email address and password that you have just registered with on the website to log-in.

6. Once you’ve been verified and are logged in successfully, update your profile.

7. If you own a Defibrillator, you can register this and its public access location in the ‘Defibrillator’ section in the App.

GIANT HOGWEED CAUTION

Recently, local keen gardener, Pamela Dobson suffered from extreme blisters and irritated skin after spending some time in her Coalgate garden. After seeking medical advice and coming away without answers, it was discovered that she had been in contact with Giant Hogweed, a weed poisonous to humans. The plant originated in Asia and was introduced throughout the world as an ornamental plant!

The following information has been provided by Weedbusters, as Pamela wouldn’t like anyone else to go through what she has suffered from for the last month. The plant, also known as wild rhubarb, wild parsnip or cartwheel flower, is a massive, erect, biennial herb (<6m) growing from a forked or branched taproot with large leaves (50-100cm long), made up of three bristled, deeply divided leaflets, forming a rosette at the base. Grooved,

hollow stems (5-10cm diameter) are blotched and spotted reddish purple and have sturdy bristles containing a toxic sap. From December to February in its second year, it produces a tall flower stalk with leaves attached and large umbrella-like clusters (20-60cm diameter) of white flowers (1.5cm diameter) that are followed by dry, flattened, oval, light brown fruit (1cm long). One plant produces up to 50,000 viable seeds that spread rapidly along water courses. Forms dense colonies suppressing the growth of native plants and grasses, dies down in winter, leaving infested banks bare of vegetation and liable to erosion or to reinvasion by weed species.

It is poisonous to humanstouching it, or exposure to dust from weed-eating, can irritate skin and cause blisters and swelling. Sap from leaves and stems is highly toxic and can cause 'photodermatitis' or 'photosensitivity' (the skin becomes very sensitive to sunlight and may suffer blistering, pigmentation and long-lasting scars). Contact with the eyes can lead to temporary or permanent blindness. Areas that come into contact with this plant should be washed immediately and protected from direct sunlight, seek medical

advice.

It is normally found along wasteland, road ditches, tree land areas, rivers or stream banks as it prefers rich, moist soils but due to the weather over the past few months, it is making a comeback in urban areas.

Seeds may remain dormant in the soil for at least five years, so prevent germination by oversowing with other species. What can I do to get rid of it?

Always wear gloves and eye protection and cover your arms and legs when working near this plant. Contaminated clothing and tools are potentially hazardous also. Wash any skin that comes in contact with the plant immediately.

1. Hand pull whole plants (spring-summer) before they set seed.

2. Cut down (summer): cut the stem below ground level during flowering but before the seed sets.

3. Spray regrowth in February or March if necessary with glyphosate (150ml/15L).

4. Overall spray (spring): glyphosate (150ml/15L). Spray again in February or March if necessary.

If you have any in your garden please advise your neighbours and report it to your local Council.

BAGPIPE DREAM

Thirteen years old, West Melton local, Cameron Sharpe absolutely loves to play the bagpipes. He is currently fundraising to support his ambition to attend the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow in August with the St Andrew’s College Juvenile Pipe Band.

Cameron was born in Edinburgh, Scotland but moved ‘home’ to Canterbury when he was three months old. “I guess that may explain why I’ve always wanted to play the pipes since I remember,” said Cameron. “My parents finally caved, and I was allowed to start lessons with Liz Drury (supported by the Ellesmere Pipe Band) when I was eight years old.

“I spent two years moving irrigation K-lines each night after school and during the summer holidays to pay for my first set of pipes. It was worth it!

“I attended Weedons School until Year 6, after which I moved to St Andrew’s College and

became a member of the School B Band for my first New Zealand Pipe Band Nationals in Hastings,” Cameron added.

Over the past five years, Cameron has played with the Ellesmere Pipe Band, supporting numerous Selwyn community events and has competed with the Caledonian and St Andrew’s Grade Four Bands, at both National and local events. He has also successfully competed in several solo piping competitions and currently has a ‘C’ Grade classification.

“My aim is to raise $7,000, which is a large goal, but this opportunity is really important to me. It would be an amazing experience to represent both my school and New Zealand at a world competition!

“Obviously, only the best players are selected to compete, so there is always going to be a chance that I may not make the cut this time around. But I have decided to think positively because I need to start now if I’m going to

achieve my fundraising goal and get the tunes nailed!

“I have been busy fundraising, and my efforts so far include busking outside Rolleston New World the week before Christmas for an hour each night, providing piping services at both funerals and special occasions over the summer holidays for a small donation and farm work over the summer period. I have raised $1,987 so far and have been touched by the generosity and encouragement people have given me. I am always looking for new busking opportunities and am interested to hear from anybody who would like piping services (age appropriate).

“I have also set up a give-a-little page if anyone would like to donate. (Details are listed below.)

Any surplus funds raised will go to the Ellesmere Pipe Band to continue providing young Selwyn players with the support and guidance that Cameron has benefitted from.

“I will be playing at the opening of the New Zealand Shetland Breeders Show in Ellesmere later this month on behalf of the Ellesmere Pipe Band. I will also be competing with the St Andrew’s Pipe Band in Blenheim in February and at the New Zealand National in Christchurch in March. I will also be continuing to practicing with the aim of being selected, which would be a dream come true,” Cameron concluded.

EXCITING TIMES

Local golfer, Dominic Brettkelly competed in the New Zealand leg of the 2022/2023 Adidas Junior 6s Tour at the Royal Wellington Gold Club on January 15th - 17th. This was the second leg of the Tour and was where former Tour player turned commentator Ewan Porter founded the circuit.

This was Dominic’s first tournament for the year, and he said it felt good to dust off the sticks, winning the 19-25 Boys division. This earnt Dominic a spot in the World Final in November at Terrey Hills Golf and Country Club.

The competitors played 18 holes of Strokeplay, with points on the year long race awarded to a number of players, and the top boys and girls finishers went head-to-head in a six hole match for the title and additional points.

Dominic also finished second in the Taranaki Strokeplay this week with rounds of 72, 70 and 72, and he felt his game was more on track this match. Next up for Dominic is the

KIRWEE BOWLING

Hastings Open this coming week, and then he plans to head to Australia and Europe for three or four months to see how he goes on the overseas golf scene.

The bowling season is progressing well for bowlers from Kirwee Bowling Club, with the women finishing their Fours and Triples competitions, and the men their Triples, while other competitions are close to a conclusion. The Women’s Pairs would be over by now, except that there has to be a three-way play-off to determine the winner! Four successful tournaments have also been held to date.

The winners in the Men’s Triples were B Monro (skip), R Spence and R Hughes

The Women’s Fours winners were M Galloway (skip), E Miller , B Dillon and J Truscott, and the Women’s Triples were won by M Knight (skip), E Glassey and J Sime

The Club has begun its Community Bowls series, where they welcome anyone in the

district to come along on Fridays from 5:30pm for a fun night of social bowling and a sausage sizzle. People are put into teams when they arrive, and novices can be teamed up with experienced bowlers. For enquiries, phone Yvonne on 318 1321.

There is also the big Charity Bowls Tournament to look forward to. This time the Kirwee Community Hall will benefit from the funds raised. It is a chance for non-bowlers to find out if the game is really as easy as it looks! The organisers are planning on holding four short games, followed by a barbecue dinner, with bowling prizes, raffles and a silent Auction.

Anyone interested in entering can contact Marian Galloway on 021 0241 0846.

GYM CLASSES RETURNING

The West Melton Gymnastics Club is excited to be bringing gymnastics back to the Darfield Community in Term 1, 2023. Classes will begin on Thursday, February 9th, and will be held at the Darfield Recreation and Community Centre. Initially, classes will run from Thursday to Saturday during term time, catering for children from preschool age to around eight years old. The Club plans to extend this to be able to cater for older children as soon as possible depending on demand and securing some additional resources.

West Melton Gymnastics Club is now based at their permanent facility in Rolleston, where they have been since 2018, after beginning in the former West

Melton Community Centre in 2008. The Club has been working on options for a satellite site in Darfield during 2022 and are now looking forward to getting classes underway. Head Coach Cindy Miller would like to thank Fleur Earl from Selwyn District Council for her support.

West Melton Gymnastics Club brings numerous years of experience providing excellent recreational gymnastics tuition and their team of experienced Coaches, with a view to grow the team locally. As well as bringing the fun, fitness and community of gymnastics to the local children, these classes also offer an opportunity for local interested students to develop their skills with youth and junior coaching opportunities.

The Club welcome the community of Darfield and surrounding areas to their free Darfield Gym Open Day on Saturday, January 28th, at the Darfield Recreation and Community Centre. So head along to have a go and meet the team. The team are also very keen to hear your feedback, requests and ideas to help grow these highly anticipated classes.
