(Hororata) and Ruby Hewitt (ex Darfield, now residing in Hokitika) are representing New Zealand at the 2023 YETI Freeride Junior World Championships in Kappl, Austria from the 23 - 26 of January.

Over 65 riders from 15 nations will be battling it out in Kappl for the title of Junior World Champion.

Both Will and Ruby qualified for this event by winning their Under 18 categories at the New Zealand Junior Freeride Tour back in August and September last year.

Currently they are both in France competing and training at Les Arcs, which is part of the Paradiski ski area, one of the largest in Europe and the second biggest linked ski area in the world. With its modern lift system and wide range of pistes, it's a ski destination that is

perfect for the duo to train at. Their siblings Joe Cookson and Sam Hewitt also travelled with them to compete in the Under 16 Categories in Les Arc.

Other Hororata locals, Tom and Poppy Freeman are also travelling to Europe to train and compete in Junior Freeride events in Europe. To make it a real family affair, Will's older brother Harry along with Henry Freeman are also currently in Europe competing on the Freeride World Qualifier circuit. Will, Joe and Tom are all also competing in Alpbachtal in Austria at the beginning of February.

Will is very grateful to the Malvern Lions and the Inspire Foundation who have supported him financially and enabled him to have this opportunity. The contribution has helped pay for his airfares, coaching and lift passes.

A huge congratulations, from the Greendale Cricket Club, to Henry Shipley on playing his first game for the Black Caps! Henry was selected in December 2022 to tour Pakistan in the white ball squad. After playing for Canterbury on January 1st, he then flew to Pakistan ready to join the touring party. On

Monday, January 9th, 2023, Henry made his debut against Pakistan in Karachi, a day-night One Day International.

Henry first started playing for Greendale as a junior, then while at St Andrew's College, he started filling in for the seniors when he was available. Often after his St Andrew’s Thursday night practice, he would be seen calling in at the end of Greendale’s practice with his father James Shipley. Once the nets were free they would carry on refining Henry's technique. One particular game, as a young teenager, Henry saw Greendale home in a tight contest chasing a low total against Akaroa/ Harbour. His composure at such a young age against adults was incredible. He was a member of the historic Greendale team, winning Malvern’s (Westacre) Judd Cup in 2011.

After leaving school, he was able to play more for Greendale, terrifying opposition batting line -ups. In one game, against Sefton, he claimed more wickets than he bowled overs.

He was often away with representative cricket, like his father and grandfather Ken Shipley, playing for Canterbury Country. His Mother, Andrea Shipley has a brother that played for Canterbury and the Black Caps (Mark Priest ), so cricket is definitely in the family.

Henry made the Canterbury team in 2016 and hasn’t looked back. Since 2018 Henry has been on loan to Darfield when rarely available, for Club cricket as a Premier player, as Greendale sits in the Senior Grade.

The Shipley family have a long association with Greendale Cricket Club and has had many family members play and administrate for the Club over the years. Henry's father, grandfather, as well as, uncles, cousins and more have all been involved with the Club.

Currently, Henry’s uncle Murray, is Greendale’s President and his cousin, Tom, also plays. Go well Henry, and all the best for the future!

MALVERN TENNIS FUNDRAISER

Malvern Tennis Club’s annual Fun Day was held on January 8th at the Kirwee Tennis Courts. The day dawned a sunny, but not too sunny, day which was perfect for the seventy two players from different clubs over Canterbury.

Peter Fitzgerald organised the day extremely well, with everyone playing four to six games with different partners. Winners gained points, and at the end of all the games, they received prizes.

Lunch and afternoon tea were provided by local Malvern players, with help from Adrienne Begg , in the kitchen. With only six courts, lots of socialising took place, which allowed everyone to meet new people. The first prize in the raffle went to the weatherman for providing a remarkable day.

Don’t be disheartened by the hype in the media. Set yourself a goal and work hard to achieve it!

The talk of recession might be worrying for some, but for others, it will be an opportunity to reap the rewards of hard work. Buying or building might seem impossible, but keep your eyes on the prize and refocus your spending – prioritise!

Everything in life is cyclical, ebbs and flows, highs and lows, and so too are interest rates. 2% was never going to be forever, but don’t dwell on the past, only focus on the future and controlling what you can.

Take a breath - Make a plan – As the old adage goes, failing to plan is planning to fail. 2023 is in your hands, and I wish you all the very best of everything wonderful!

GREENFIELD LAND DEVELOPMENT

Development of large areas of land to allow for additional residential housing in Selwyn is at an all-time high, with the region experiencing multiple privately initiated plan change requests.

These requests usually seek to allow farmland on the edge of townships to be converted to residential zones. There is much dispute if this is a good thing or not, or if we should instead be accommodating people within the existing urban extent of Selwyn’s townships.

When considering your view on this issue it is important to understand the costs to the community versus the costs borne by the land developer.

Land developers are responsible for paying for, and installing, the physical infrastructure for servicing the developments. This includes pipes for water supply and wastewater disposal, installing fibre and power, and providing areas for stormwater disposal if the Council network cannot accommodate it.

Developers create roads and are required to provide recreational park areas if the Council’s existing network of parks is not sufficient to meet the needs of the likely future residents.

Developers may also be required to upgrade the size of the Council’s pipes or install additional infrastructure between the site and Council supply areas if there is insufficient ability to accommodate future development.

Every time a new section is created in a subdivision, Council levies a contribution from the developer under the Local Government Act at the rate set out in the Development Contributions Policy in the Council’s Long-Term Plan. These contributions are required to be spent on the matters they have been levied for and includes capital investment into sewer disposal, stormwater disposal, water supply, roading upgrades, and

community services such as libraries.

In contrast, rates, which are levied to every household in the district, provide for the operational expenses of the district. This includes road maintenance and repairs, maintaining and fixing pipe infrastructure and operational costs involved with community facilities and community programs.

Newer subdivisions are charged rates immediately once titles are issued, however, the roading or pipe networks in those areas should only require minimal maintenance for the first few years.

Therefore, the rates spent on

maintenance can be focused on existing older parts of the district or other areas requiring maintenance.

So, when you are considering your views on the expansion of Selwyn’s townships, it’s helpful to understand that the costs of designing and installing infrastructure are not paid for by Council or the community.

Rather, a large significant contribution is made by the developer, who has to subtract these costs from any potential profits before moving ahead with any further residential development.

January, 14th saw the first event of the year with the Memorial Shoot held, in memory of those who have passed on. A good day first up, with light winds and bright with it, although a bit of haze made the targets hard to see.

Shooting started on time with a bit of confusion due to the change of Shoot Secretary and the need to separate the differing levels of shooters. It wouldn’t be a new year without a few problems - with Trap 2 jamming and out of action after the first squad. A late finish would be required with 24 attendees.

The eye-opener was quickly over with some very average looking scores on the board from some of the “better” shooters and not much red on the board at all.

Round two and handicap by distance: Ross Millichamp lead the way with the only possible, with shoot-offs required for the two scoring 24/25 for 2nd and 3rd and those on 23/25 a bit more challenging, Seven shooters for six prizes is always interesting.

Next the Memorial Shoot with a similar result, just a single possible from Dave Armitage and a 24 by Brian Johnson . A shoot-off would be needed to sort out places 3 to 6.

Results:

Round 2 - Meat Prizes

WORLD DEAF BOWLS SELECTION

Hazel Littlejohn, from Darfield Bowling Club, recently competed at the Summerset Nationals Bowls competition in Auckland.

She finished in the top eight for disabilities singles, losing to Para Jack Lynda Bennett in the

quarter-finals at Browns Bay.

“I was thrilled to have reached this far in this competition, which is the first time that all disabilities have been introduced in this category. We had to play in challenging gusty conditions,

and maintaining balance and smooth delivery was hard,” Hazel explained.

Hazel's disability is deafness, and she qualifies with 55db in her better ear.

She has also been selected to represent New Zealand again, for the World Deaf Bowls to be held in Scotland in September, along with Barbara Herrick from West Melton and three others from the Canterbury region. The team comprises of seven men and seven women from all over New Zealand.

This year will be the first time that Bowls New Zealand will be behind the team, supplying uniforms and providing a threeday intensive training session on a croquet green, in Christchurch, at Easter. They will be learning techniques on delivering bowls on a much heavier green similar to the Scottish greens, unlike the quicker greens here.

DARFIELD PREMIER CRICKET

Darfield slip to fourth place on the premier ladder following a loss to Weedons on Saturday. Choosing to bat first, Weedons made a slow start as Jesse Frew and Robbie Foulkes took a wicket each. This had Kyle Jamieson walking to the middle with his side at 22/2 but he was judged LBW from the bowling of Ryan Hughes for 13 runs.

A slow and patient partnership followed with Liam Robinson and Jeremy Benton scratching singles where they could with Benton eventually finishing on 59 with a lone boundary to his name, perhaps an indication of the miserly Darfield bowling. Hughes finished with 4 wickets for the innings and Weedons, 185/9 from the full allotment of 45 overs.

An avoidable run out cost the wicket of Robbie Foulkes for a duck so it was up to Nick Gilbert and Jesse Frew to deal with the steep bounce and aggressive pace of Kyle Jamieson’s bowling. The Black Cap was at

PUBLIC NOTICES

full speed as he nears the end of his recovery from last summer’s injury.

With the departure of Gilbert for 23, Frew was joined by an in-form Ryan Hughes and the pair steadied the innings until, yet another wobble had Frew out for 38 and Hughes for 51. 60 runs required for the win and Weedons brought back Jamieson to wrap up the tail. Alister Collins provided resistance with a confident 20 not out, but support from his teammates withered leaving Darfield dismissed for 159 in the 41st over.

The Canterbury Kings have propelled themselves into third on the Super Smash ladder a er their big win against the Northern Brave last Friday night. Local player, Zak Foulkes was named ‘Best with the Ball’ a er the 20-year-old all-rounder nabbed three big wickets at the top of the order in his team’s 48-run win at Christchurch’s Hagley Oval, before coming back and grabbing the important wicket of the big-hi ng Sco Kuggeleijn to kill off the visitors chase. Zak showed a fine display of swing bowling, finishing with 4-23 from 4 overs in just his second T20.
