The Covid pandemic still hangs over our head and probably will do for a long time but for now we just need to keep on, keeping on. The return of annual, regular, and even new, events is great to see and it helps bring the community together to celebrate and helps take that feeling of uncertainty away.
Life at the ‘News continues to be reasonably busy and I appreciate everyone's continued support. A big thank you to all my advertisers, without you the
‘News wouldn’t exist. As the world changes to more of a digital, on-line and social media presence I often question myself if an old-fashion hard copy of the paper is still required.
But, if the paper, for reasons beyond our control, isn’t delivered on time we get multiple phone calls asking where it is. We also get people commenting to us how they love reading the local news and how easy it is to quickly find a phone number in the local ‘rag’.
This encourages me to keep on supplying our weekly community paper as we are aware not everyone is on facebook, or has access to the internet.
I couldn’t do it with the support, help and loyalty of my team.
My full-time staff member, Lucinda Jarvis , wears many hats within the business and is the main reason the business runs as smoothly as it does. She always goes above and beyond what is expected and I appreciate her for many reasons especially her loyalty, efficiency and over-all finger-on-the-pulse approach.
She is the main face behind the counter, the main voice behind the phone and has an awesome repour with customers and clients.
Part-time staff includes Chevonn Walker , Holly Moore and Abbi Moore
Many of you will know Chevonn from when she worked for me in the past. She missed us too much and we missed her more. We were lucky enough to have her in the office one day a week to help with all your advertising needs.
Holly started off doing work experience for me through the High School and now works two days a week as well as working part-time at Kirwee Challenge and studying full-time.
Holly helps out with a variety of
jobs, from packing papers, setting up the next paper and helping with invoicing.
She has an amazing personality and wherever she ends up in the future I know she will do extremely well.
Holly’s younger sister Abbi, started helping me out years ago and continues to work after school and during the school holidays. Abbi is very hard working but manages to be the entertainer of the office at the same time. She delivers papers around the area, does general office duties and keeps us on our toes. She is a very capable girl for her age and will be sorely missed when she ‘fly's the nest’.
Another person in our team is Nathan Carter who is our number one courier man. Each week he collects the papers from the office and takes them to the Rural Delivery (RD) drivers that are based out of Darfield. He also drives around and delivers the paper to each mailbox on one of the RD runs. He is very efficient, capable, enthusiastic and loves driving. Nathan is on the autism spectrum and is going through the transition process of gaining employment. I would highly recommend him to anyone that is looking for an employee that is punctual, resilient and willing.
Thanks also to Ryan Thomas who works the ‘night-shift’ when he is home from boarding school.
A final thanks to my team of people that also deliver the paper, either on foot, bike or car. You all play a key part in the process of the business and I appreciate you all.
Wishing you all a safe and merry Christmas and I look forward to helping you with your advertising or printing needs in 2023.
Thomas, Editor/Owner of Malvern News.
This time last year, we were all looking for the light at the end of a very long Covid-19 tunnel. This year we have been able to enjoy many great community events together, including the Hororata Highland Games and our agricultural shows, as well as just being able to smile at each another without masks as we pass one another in cafes and at gatherings. I’m proud to see our district on display and for our agricultural sector to be able to show its best.
Christmas is a time to reflect a spend time reconnecting with those that we might not have seen for a while, slowing things down and simply enjoying conversations. Christmas break is also an opportunity to recharge the batteries and step back from the things that take us away from our loved ones, put down the electronics and reach for a book or a board game. Liz and I will be taking some
time out with our daughter Elliott and our wider whanau to do just that and enjoy the very best that Waikirikiri Selwyn has
to offer. I trust you can do the same.
Merry Christmas, Mayor Sam.
2022 has been a challenging time for many, leading into Christmas can allow us to understand and appreciate what is truly important in our lives. Family, friends and community connections come to mind. It is also a good reminder of what a beautiful, safe and prosperous area we live in and to reach out to those less fortunate.
Santa (Bob) will be back in the Grotto from the 19th - 23rd of December, from 3pm to 6pmdon’t forget to visit, everyone is welcome.
We would like to thank you for your support at the recent Local Body Elections, with so much change anticipated, we hope to represent you and Malvern well. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy holiday.
Bob and Lydia.
Season’s greetings Selwyn! It’s been a big year, and I hope you and your family have plans to take some time off and relax over the holiday period. As the year winds down, it’s a good opportunity to take stock ofand celebrate - all that’s been achieved.
community. It really matters to me that your views are clearly represented, so I do what I can to get out and about - as often as I can - across Selwyn.
Throughout the year, I have hosted several coffee catch ups in Darfield and Glentunnel, visited a range of different businesses in the area, such as Ballooning Canterbury and Tresillion Truffles, attended the Hororata Highland Games, and had a stall at the (slightly damp) Courtenay A&P Show.
As your elected representative, I have loved my second year as your MP and continue to learn a lot. My job is to take your voice to the decision-makers in Wellington, and do my best to make sure Government policies reflect what matters to our
My office and I have helped hundreds of constituents with a huge range of problems and issues - which has always been the most rewarding part of my role as your Member of Parliament. The General Election will be held next year, but the important business of representing you will continue as usual. Wishing you all the very best for a happy holiday season.

Waitaha/Canterbury has numerous stunning swimming spots to cool off in during the hot summer days, but it’s important to be aware of water quality issues and how to stay informed. Before heading to the beach, river or lake to swim, visit the Can I Swim Here? sec on of the LAWA website, and look for water quality signs when you’re there. New Zealand’s largest familyowned bus and coach company, Tranzit Group has acquired the long-standing Canterbury family-owned bus and coach company, Torlesse Travel.
The sale of Torlesse, which operated charter, direct resource services and some Ministry of Education school bus services, was completed on December 1st.
The sale and purchase agreement included Tranzit Group buying Torlesse Travel’s eighty charter and school buses as well as two Leopard coaches. In addition, Tranzit has leased all three Torlesse Travel depot sites and workshops located in Darfield, Oxford and Rangiora.
Tranzit Group Managing Director Paul Snelgrove said, “The two companies have always had a huge mutual respect and share similar family values, so when we were approached to buy the company, it was great timing as we were looking to grow our business and to have a permanent bus and coach base in the South Island.”
While Tranzit will be a new name in this part of New Zealand, the
company founded in 1924 in Wairarapa by Paul’s grandfather Albert Snelgrove, already has business interests in Christchurch. Their operating company Cross Country Rentals was established there in 2016, while Tranzit also operates Pacific Tourways (Auckland) Ltd and Bus Travel Ltd in both Auckland and Christchurch, with these driving teams now in full swing for the summer touring season.
“We are a family-owned transport and tourism company with our roots firmly in regional New Zealand -Wairarapa to be precise. We are committed to continuing the legacy that Grant Rabbidge has built in this part of Canterbury for more than twenty years, including taking on the core of their operations and continuing to deliver exceptional services,” Paul added.
Tranzit has spent several weeks working with the existing Torlesse team through a positive transition period and recently began the interview process to bring across as many of that team to ensure minimal disruption and continuity of services. This includes
welcoming over sixty drivers, mechanics and operations team members.
Torlesse’s Grant Rabbidge said, “He was pleased to be leaving his company in New Zealand ownership and in a safe pair of hands.
“Stepping back from the bus industry after more than twenty years servicing the terrific communities here in Darfield, Oxford and Rangiora has been a difficult decision for our family to make, however, we know this is the right outcome for our team as they can continue to work for Tranzit and continue to give our customers and suppliers continuity,” Grant concluded.
Paul added, “All Torlesse’s existing school bus services have continued as usual during the last of Term 4 under Tranzit with minimal disruption to parents, students and schools. Due to having the same vehicles, drivers and team.
“Starting in January 2023, there will be a soft transition and gradual introduction of Tranzit Coachlines fleet and brand into Canterbury,” Paul concluded.

The holiday season is full of reflection, goal setting, milestones and special occasions to celebrate, all of which typically require the updating of your estate plan.
New Year.
Hororata 103 Cotons Road
We share four festive reasons why you should take this opportunity to work with us, to complete your estate planning: The family are together. Having meaningful estate planning discussions can help us to deepen connections and to seek input from those we care about most. While this discussion is useful, your wishes and decisions are final. If you want some help with knowing how to start the estate planning conversation, start with a no-obligation phone call to your local Tavendale and Partners (TP) team. You are likely to be in the right, future-focused, mindset. The holiday season is a time to reflect on the year that has been

A change to your estate. Although not the reason for the season, Christmas is often a time when gifts are exchanged. If you inherit property or money this holiday season, you may want to include it in your Will. Many families pass down sentimental gifts through generations.
If you receive a generational possession, you may know exactly who it should go to next, and the best way to ensure that happens is to record the direction in your Will.

One of the most important gifts you can give your family is ‘peace of mind’. Tavendale and Partners Lawyers can assist with much more than just a Will. Your TP team can give you specialist legal advice, tailored to your circumstances, to ensure your wishes are recorded and your estate correctly administered in the future. December is here, and Christmas is near, get in contact with your local TP team for a free initial consultation. We are closed from Christmas Eve and re-open on January 16th, 2023.

Two scenario options have been modelled - one being if the property remains dryland and or two if the property is managed under CPW.
A report on the above will be available in the information memorandum.
The intending purchasers may consider livestock trading as an option with the Coalgate sale yards approximately 9km from the farm.
Approximately a year ago, Hann Harvest changed ownership from Jason and Anne Hann to Ed and Kate Hobson. The business is now known as Hauora Produce and they are still producing delicious berries. Hauora means health in Māori, the pair want to produce high quality, delicious and healthy produce. They felt the name aligned with their values and what they were wanting to achieve, so felt this was the perfect new name for the business.
Ed grew up in Te Pirita on a family farm, attending Hororata Primary before being shipped off
to boarding school. He has always worked in or around the agriculture sector, attending Lincoln University and has held various jobs since with the eventual aim of business ownership.
Kate grew up on a family farm outside Southbridge, attending Southbridge Primary School and Ellesmere College before her family relocated to Oxford. She is a nurse by trade but has always been interested in agriculture and horticulture.
Both Ed and Kate have no major background in horticulture but have always had green fingers
and a taste for strawberries.
The pair are blown away by the local support and fantastic positive comments they have received this past year. “It can be absolute chaos at times, but Anne and Jase have been wonderful, and our team of staff and support networks have been a huge help,” commented Ed.
“There have been no major changes just yet, it has been business as usual. But watch this space in the future,” Ed concluded.

Jordy Frew and Cameron Paul hit personal best scores for Darfield as the Premier side overcame Leeston-Southbridge to retain third place in the Canterbury Country combined competition.
Robbie Foulkes contributed 32 runs at the top of the innings leaving Frew (84) and Paul (55*) together with the score at 85/3. The young pair proceeded in a watchful manner as Sam Chamberlain and Tom Burt bowled excellent line and length on a fresh pitch. Their patience was rewarded with the occasional bad ball, but it was mostly a case of collecting singles where they could, and despite a fast Leeston outfield, a score of 197/4 seemed about right.
Leeston-Southbridge replied with a solid start as Harry and Sam Chamberlain moved the score along at the required run rate. Tom Innes and Robbie Foulkes made use of the pitch conditions just as well as the opposition bowlers had done, however, the introduction of Ryan Hughes broke the Chamberlain partnership.
Nick Jenkins provided 9 miserly overs through the middle without taking a wicket, but that is hardly surprising because Will Greenslade gobbled seven for himself in a remarkable display of steep bounce, excellent seam control and tight lines.
Greenslade never gave the batsmen an opportunity to open up and sent them home with help from some excellent catching by his teammates, in particular a one-handed grab in the slips by Ryan Hughes.
Greenslade’s figures of 7 wickets, 3 maidens and 20 runs, from 8.2
overs, were the difference between the two teams.
The competition breaks for Christmas, resuming on January 14th, with Darfield hosting Weedons.
Darfield 197/4 from 45 overs
Robbie Foulkes 32 Cameron Paul 55* Jordy Frew 84
Tom Burt 1/28 from 9 overs.
Leeston-Southbridge 148/10 from 41 overs
Sam Chamberlain 66 Harry Chamberlain 36 Ryan Hughes 2/27 from 5 overs Will Greenslade 7/20 from 8.2 overs.

This year’s Christmas will be different without the late Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Christmas message. Fortunately, King Charles will have the support of his family. We too, cannot do without the support of our family, friends, neighbours and the unity of the community we live in. As we near Christmas, may we draw near to the real meaning of Christmas, “For God
so Loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever may believe in Him should not perish but will have eternal life.” (John 3:16).
Malvern Co-operating Parish are delighted to invite you and your families to see the Sunday School children and their families presenting a Nativity Play.
The Play will be held on Friday,
December 23rd hence the name Christmas Eve Eve at 5pm. Not on Christmas Eve (Saturday). It will take place at either Trinity Hall or Trinity Church Darfield. Please come along dressed as part of the Nativity Scene - thank you.
Aunty Lyn - Ministry Team Leader Malvern Co-operating Parish.
In the Bible, we read that the Shepherds dashed off to find Jesus after the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.” When they arrived where Jesus was born, they told Mary all that they had heard about Jesus. We
are told that “Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.”
Here’s a simple thought for this Christmas season: Like Mary, why not take some time out to ponder what it’s all bout - a celebration of the birth of the Saviour of the world. Jesus said that he came so that we can have life and have it in abundance. Christmas is an
opportunity to take hold of that life in a relationship with Jesus. On behalf of the Church family at Darfield Baptist, let me invite you to join us on, December 18th, for a fun Christmas Play, at 10:30am. Then, on December 25th, at 9:30am, for a short Christmas Day service.
Blessings, Pastor James FotheringhamDarfield Baptist Church.

Things change at home when there is a new baby, don't they? Our mealtimes and sleep times change. Our whole focus shifts. It's not all easy, but we make the changes we need to make to accommodate the baby. These changes continue as our children grow up. Beyond the changes, parents find a new sense of purpose and direction. We have someone else to think of and something bigger than ourselves to live for.
At Christmas, we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Here is a baby who arrives among us and changes our lives. As we welcome him into our hearts and homes, we find a new purpose for ourselves,
and we start to change things to accommodate him. As we do so, he ‘grows up’ in our lives, and he teaches us how to love God and one another. He leads us in the way of peace.
Our world is in a bit of a state right now. Christmas interrupts that. It's a chance for us to think
about where we are headed and what we are living for. What do we need to change to make a place for Jesus in our world? Let's make him welcome this Christmas.

This year Matariki was a public holiday, the observance reminds contemporary society of the significance of the stars, especially for navigation.
In Matthew’s Gospel, the magi set out on their journey in response to seeing a ‘star as it rose’. They travelled in response to the star, but they needed the interpretation of people of faith, in Jerusalem to direct them to Bethlehem and the person of Jesus.
In the southern hemisphere, Christmas falls a few days after the summer solstice. Light is a feature of the southern Christmas; it banishes darkness. The longer days beacon us to enjoy and celebrate family, friends, and the world around us. This is a great simile for Christ
enabling us to live and enjoy life to the fullest.
St John, in the prologue to his gospel, describes Jesus as ‘a light that shines in the dark, a light that darkness could not overpower’ (1:5). In the Book of Revelation, Jesus is described as the ‘morning star’ (22:2).
In these references, Jesus is certainly the light that provides a true bearing for our lives.
Christmas is a season that affirms humanity; humanity has been blessed by Jesus sharing in human life.
The ‘star’ and ‘light’ are Christmas motifs that speak of our journey in life, and the reality that we need others to assist us to live life well. The long days and the warmth of summer remind us of the joy and fulfilment that we receive by
discovering Jesus and allowing him to accompany us in life. I hope that the enjoyment of summer leads us to a deeper appreciation of God’s
December 17th was the fourth day of the Malvern Rifle Club Championship, with ‘longs’ being shot (10 counting shots at 800 and 900 yards).
The day was warm and sunny, with some cloud cover, which increased during the afternoon, and by the end of the day’s competition a few drops of rain had fallen. The right to left wind was, as usual, variable in both strength and angle, providing its usual challenges to the shooters.
Visitors from the Ashburton District Rifle Club joined the Malvern shooters for more practice at the longer ranges.
Allan , Andre and Chris shot ‘Bisley’ style at each distance, with the two shooters shooting alternately on the target with a maximum of 45 seconds for the shooter to get their shot away.
One F Class shooter (who shall remain nameless) shot a possible 60.5 with only one problemtwo of his counting shots (an X and a 6) were on the wrong target. This made him a target of teasing for the rest of the afternoon.
Congratulations to Martin , Chris and Murray for shooting a possible at 800 yards.
The Malvern Rifle Club wishes everyone a happy and safe Christmas and New Year.
