With mother nature threatening to derail the inaugural Sheffield Country Polo over the weekend, around 700 people were looking to the skies in the hope she would play ball. And did she ever! What a day! A world-class polo line up, led by the evergreen Matt O’Sullivan from Ashburton, put on a real show! Right from the first whistle, where the ponies raced in an impressive jousting style start, the game was on!
The MC John Dunne, was in his element behind the microphone and had the crowd excited. A bit of wind meant the ball floated around and occasionally flew into the crowd, but this just kept everyone on their toes and an eye on the game. Four high quality and even games were played in great spirit, and the quality of the players was a treat to watch. Half-time entertainment was a real laugh,
with the stomping of the divots, the Sheffield PTA Auction run by Scott McIlroy and his Hazlett blokes (highlight being one processed lamb selling for $700!), and the Fat Beagle Café Best Dressed Male and
Dalethorpe House Best Dressed Female competition, won by Ethan and Sally
The final game was played and taken out by the Bayleys team, made up of Ben Turner , Tom Turner and Mark Hutchinson
Special mention must go to Taylor Cleland, who took it all off to personally raise some funds, with a well timed and supported lap of the field.

FANTASTIC DAY AT THE POLO
...continued from front page.
Next up was the human sulky race - with eight teams competing for the coveted bragging rights. A tough round robin, followed by a tight final eventually saw the win go to Progressive Livestock - captained by Rich Harley
After the formalities were all completed, our resident local band, ‘The Pig Saddle Band’, took the proceedings well into the night.
“It was fantastic seeing everyone with a big smile and was just great for the community to get together and have a good day out,” commented Scott McIlroy. A massive thank you must go out to the following people, as without them the event would not have happened: John Dunne (MC), Frews Transport, Fahey Fence Hire, Sheffield School and Rugby Club, Sheffield Fire Brigade for their outstanding taxi services, St John, Malvern Lions, and all the numerous people who helped during the day. We were blown away by the level of support the whole wider community gave to get in behind the event.
“Wow, what an amazing day was had by all. It was so great to see everyone out together having a great time. Thank you again to all the sponsors and volunteers who gave up their time to make it an awesome first year,” commented Shanelle Carroll-Pudney “We were unbelievably stoked with the whole day, the feedback has been amazing and supportive. We wanted to create an event that brought the whole community together. We can't wait to get into organising the next year's event!” commented Dan Van Der Salm

KIWIBANK LOCAL HEROES
Kiwibank asked the people of Aotearoa to nominate individuals inspiring change in their communities.
After receiving hundreds of nominations from across the motu (island), the panel of regional judges were given the difficult task of awarding the top 100 inspirational Kiwis, who have made a positive difference in their corner of Aotearoa.
Kiwibank has proudly partnered with Ngā Tohu Pou Kōhure o Aotearoa, New Zealander of the Year Awards for more than a decade, to support and celebrate the amazing things that happen in Aotearoa and most importantly, those people who are doing the hard mahi to improve the lives of others.
Darfield Foodbank coordinator, Rosalie Craven , was named a 2023 Te Pou Toko o te Tau Kiwibank New Zealand, Local Hero of the Year medallist.
Rosalie is a treasure to her Darfield and Malvern community. Throughout the lockdowns, she kept those around her fed and clothed through her efforts with her
husband, Mark Together they run the Darfield Foodbank, which has been a lifesupport for many, connecting people with furniture, clothes and kai in times of need.
Supported generously by donations from locals, her ongoing drive has meant many who would have struggled through the pandemic, have been cared for - she’s diligently kept her community afloat.
“I am honoured to be a medallist. It’s rewarding to see so many people getting behind helping others in the community.
Helping others over the lockdowns was a real team effort,” commented Rosalie.
Scott Bowman from Oxford Bird Rescue Trust, was also a medallist.
Devoted to birdlife, Scott has tended injured birds day and night for the past ten years. With his wife Tracy, they offered refuge and a place for manu (birds) to heal.
Scott’s inadvertently become a specialist in birds of prey, with their sharp claws and talons he’s
sustained the odd scratch, but determinedly carries on nursing them back to health, to be returned to the wild. During the breeding season, Scott and Tracey were inundated with babies who’ve fallen from their nests and need rearing. “It's a big job, but a satisfying one when the birds are grown enough to fly off into the world,” commented Scott. His commitment saw him regularly driving up and down the South Island to take more seriously injured birds to wildlife hospitals - he did this at his own personal expense.

HEALTH INFORMATION EVENING
Thank you to everyone who recently attended the Health Information Evening, shining the light on Ovarian Cancer. Organisers have had great feedback, with many commenting on how insightful it was and how brave and courageous Wendy Gerritsen was for sharing her story and cancer journey.
Wendy hopes that by telling her story, she will inspire other women to seek medical attention early so they can have an early diagnosis, to have a better chance at a longer life. The Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer can be so vague and easily brushed off.
• Smear tests do not detect Ovarian Cancer.
• In NZ, Ovarian Cancer is the leading cause of gynaecological cancer death. Survival rates are less than half that of breast and prostate cancer.
Dr Anna Rodgers spoke of navigating your way through the health system and getting the best out of your appointments with your doctor.
While Ainsley Burton shared the importance of understanding
your body’s messages through symptoms and such - becoming the CEO of your health and being empowered through the knowledge of your own health history, life story and intuition. You know your body the best!
Matt Stewart also shared his brief but touching story about his wife Nicky’s Ovarian Cancer diagnosis and life. Thank you, Matt.
We (Wendy, Ainsley and Anna) wish to thank a few people and businesses who supported the
evening, Farmlands, Darfield High School, 234 Cottage Gifts, Social Beauty, Sheffield Pie Shop, Empowering Health and Stuart Gerritsen.
The purpose of this evening was to bring about awareness of this silent killer. For more information, you can visit: www.cureovariancancer.org or connect with anyone of us. Also, look out for more information chats coming up.
Wendy, Ainsley and Anna.

RENEW
A new home-based beauty studio has opened in Darfield. After graduating and practising beauty therapy in Cape Town, it was always Roxanne Fennell’s goal to open her own salon.
After immigrating to New Zealand four and a half years ago, Roxanne and her husband Gareth decided to relocate their family to Darfield from Auckland. They wanted to embrace community living and be closer to their family, the Grenfell's The Fennell family are thoroughly enjoying being part of the friendly community.
Post-Covid and challenges around remote working ignited Roxanne’s dream, and Renew by Roxanne was created. This home and owner run salon offers a variety of professional beauty services in a relaxed environment.
“What I enjoy about being a beauty therapist is the client interaction and making people feel pampered. Inviting people into a calm environment where they are able to relax and

BOOK BEFORE CHRISTMAS
I can’t believe I’m writing this, with less than a month to go till Christmas, how did that happen? Due to the weather conditions, most of you will have noticed the fly population is very low. But be aware, as soon as we get some sun and heat, things will go mad!
Some of the ways to keep them away are:
• If you have dogs pick up their faeces regularly.
• Wash your rubbish bins regularly during the summer season.
• Barbecues are normally close to the house, so make sure you keep them clean and clean-up any spills, as well as the fat tray.
While families are away on their Christmas holidays it’s a great time to have your home treated on the inside for flies and whitetails. The house is empty and there’s no food out. See if you can find a relative or a neighbour to leave your key with and we can treat your home while you are away. If this suits, give us a call for a booking 0800 667 778.
If you have an ant problem, there are a few things you can do to help keep them at bay also:
• Clean any outside sumps which service the kitchenespecially if you have a garbage disposal unit.
• Empty indoor food rubbish bins daily and keep them
clean. Cut away any trees that are touching your house or roof, especially if your boundary trees are touching your neighbours trees.
• Again, keep wheelie bins clean.
• Don’t leave cat and dog food out, put it away after feeding. Because ant control can be very expensive, we have written a pamphlet on ant control and can supply you with products we know work, once you know how to do it. Being on the spot with the right gear is the most
effective

To the Editor:
I read with dismay the Greens, supported by the Labour Government have introduced under urgency a supplementary order paper as a further amendment to the already divisive Three Waters Legislation that will, if adopted, lock in the ownership to others of our assets and associated water resources in perpetuity, with only a majority of 60% of parliament being able to overturn any legislation. The latter being a very difficult and unlikely scenario.
This is proof positive and a clear admission by the Labour Government that we have no rights or interest in the assets that have been essentially stolen from ratepayers. This ill thought through entrenchment is of real concern not only for this particular legislation but for any future change that an out of control government wants to make. We should all be very concerned at this latest crushing of democratic rights and denegation of our constitutional protection. I urge all ratepayers and those who might want to save what’s left of our democratic rights, to communicate urgently with our Councillors and Member of Parliament and urge them to make every effort to fight against this serious breach of trust.
Ian Lees, Darfield.
To the Editor:
I would like to make a correction to the Sheffield Fire Brigade Awards Night piece from last week that was supplied by myself. It was actually Sheffield Springfield Netball that served the meal, cleared tables and did the dishes, which we would like to thank.
Also it was SFF Myles Gordon that received a Silver Bar for 11 years service, not Gordon Myles. Nev Croy, Sheffield.

150TH CELEBRATIONS
The Dunsandel 150th Anniversary was held last weekend and this was the first time the Town has organised a celebration of its past. How many people to cater for? Will the weather be fine? How to publicise the event? Will there be enough people to help? Is there money to fund the event?
Russell Dalzell (fresh from organising the construction of the Community Centre) and his small team of volunteers, faced all the difficulties mentioned above.
The Selwyn District Council supplied funding, which was very much appreciated. This meant we were able to hire the Ellesmere Big Band, a bouncy castle, the Top Team crew and a face painting team, as well as having money to go towards publicity. It would be interesting to hear how towns in Malvern organise their internal publicity. It proved to be very difficult in Dunsandel, as very few people have a letterbox, and unaddressed OR unstamped items cannot be put in post office boxes. It is not like the old days
when everybody met at the railway station, as the train came in with the mail and swapped news. As many of the former residents as could be remembered were contacted, and were offered the bonus of being able to park close to the event. We heard some people who now live in Wellington were coming, so that was cheering news. After months of meetings, things started to appear the day before the event (Friday, November 25th), with the Dunsandel Historic Society and some experts from the Ellesmere Historical Society helping to mount the display of historic photographs. A display of
common items, up to 150 years old, were also set out in the hall. A plaque that had been specially commissioned to celebrate the event was mounted ready for unveiling the next day. By lunchtime, in the beautifully fine weather, the first of the tractors and a traction engine, each towing a whare, chugged in. Later, more came with the machines that are their pride and joy, and a little town sprang up on the rugby field.
See next week’s issue for a post-event piece.

MALVERN RIFLE CLUB
On Show weekend (November 12th and 13th), the Malvern Rifle Association hosted the Canterbury Spring Champs, with shooters coming from as far away as Auckland, Riverton and across the South Island.
The rain, hail, thunder and lightning shortened the shooting on Saturday, and a technical problem with the electronic targets also shortened Sunday’s programme. Despite the issues,
the competition, while friendly, was fierce. The Champions were Chris Kershaw (Target Rifle), Mike Chui (F-Open) and Samantha Riddle (FTR).
The following weekend (Nov 19th), the Jack Shield Interclub competition was scheduled, but had to be postponed due to the weather.
November 26th was a Club Training Day. Shooters had to arrive promptly as Malvern Hills
Road was being closed for a car rally. A small, dedicated group of shooters arrived - who weren’t deterred by the forecast rain. The decision was made to shoot only one distance in case the rain began. Most shooters used the opportunity to get extra rounds of shooting practice.
Last weekend, Allan White and Chris Kershaw were in Auckland competing in the Auckland Championships. Congratulations to Chris for winning the Auckland A-Grade and Target Rifle Championship and Allan for winning the TR Long Range Aggregate.
Visitors are welcome to the range, contact details can be found on the Malvern Rifle Club Facebook page: Malvern Rifle Club.

What is a catchment group?
Catchment groups are a group of local farmers, landowners and community members who share an interest in working together to take action toward a shared goal. PREMIER CRICKET
Darfield Premier moved into fourth place on the Canterbury Country ladder following a bonus point win against Cheviot at Darfield last Saturday.
The visitors got off to a slow start despite a fast outfield and perfectly flat pitch. Will Greenslade took the first wicket with the score at 39, and a steady flow followed with Jesse Frew and Liam Foulkes taking two each, but it was Ryan Hughes who did the dirty deed by grabbing four for the day, including 2 in 2 balls. Only Archie Redfern, Will Anderson and Will Inch made it past 20, leaving Cheviot with an underwhelming score of 131 in the 40th over.
Zak Foulkes was caught at first slip early in the chase when the umpire failed to notice the ball hitting Foulkes in the head and not his bat, but it didn't stop Jesse Frew from scoring freely as he hit 5 boundaries on his way to 41. Once he fell, a little wobble followed but Ryan Hughes (39*) steadied things from his end as partners came and went at the other. Perhaps sensing further wickets, Hughes boofed 2 big sixes to secure the win.
Cheviot 131 from 40 overs
Archie Redfern 31
Ryan Hughes 4/22 from 9 overs
Jesse Frew 2/17 from 9 overs Liam Foulkes 2/33 from 9 overs.
Darfield 132/6 from 23 overs
Jesse Frew 41
Ryan Hughes 39*
Tom Fitzpatrick 3/57 from 9 Will Anderson 2/10 from 4 overs.
