ISSUE 1,061 - FRIDAY 4TH NOVEMBER 2022

Page 1

The Springfield School 150th Jubilee took place over the weekend of October 28th-30th. Past and present students, staff and friends of the school turned up in droves to celebrate the event.

The weekend started with a welcome function on Friday night, with attendees enjoying drinks and an amazing array of canapés provided by Springfield locals Leisa Ropiha and Tara Keogh’s TLC Catering. The mood was lively, with old friends reconnecting and many memories shared. Attendees poured over an extensive display of photos of the students and School, which had been painstakingly compiled by Caroline Hawkins from Springfield.

A picnic on Saturday afternoon was followed by the official opening of the new School building. There was a lovely community feel to the occasion, and fortunately, threatening rain held off. Principal Keri Steele spoke about the history of the

School, and how features of the new building reflect the local environment and student’s learning journey. Mayor Sam Broughton also addressed the 200 plus strong crowd, before cutting the ribbon, held by the oldest and youngest current students, Ruby Peacock and Milly Faulkner . Once the new building was officially declared

open, former student Bob White rang the School bell, followed by photos, afternoon tea, and tours of the new building.

It was a quick turnaround to the Saturday night dinner and dance, with attendees enjoying a delicious meal provided by Pulp Kitchen Catering. The crowd was entertained by MC John Dunne , with former student Maurice

Milliken cutting the jubilee cake. For those still standing, The Funky Hot Mamas live duo entertained late into the evening.

The weekend concluded with a thanksgiving service at St Peter’s Church on Sunday.

All in all the weekend was a huge success.

SPRINGFIELD SCHOOL JUBILEE

...Continued from front page.

After the Jubilee was delayed firstly by the School rebuild and then by Covid, it was fantastic to see the celebrations take place.

The Jubilee committee received amazing feedback about the weekend, and are hugely appreciative of the support from local families and businesses enabling this event to go ahead. The organisers of the 150th Jubilee also have another project in mind. The committee and School plan to refurbish the Springfield School sign. As part of the rebuild landscaping design, the main School entrance is being modified to create a safer and more welcoming entrance. The school sign will be moved and updated to include the School’s gifted Māori name.

Donations received will go towards the relocation and refurbishment of the sign. A plaque will be attached to identify that the sign was

refurbished for the occasion of the School’s 150th Jubilee, and will list the name of sponsors. Donations to this project are most welcome.

The information and opinions published are not necessarily those of the Malvern News proprietor. The final approval of letters for print, rests with the editor. Letters to the Editor should be no more than 200 words in length. Letters written using a pseudonym, are unable to be published.

The “Fart Tax” proposal has an insufficient scientific basis and will cripple the agricultural sector and the national economy. It needs to be stopped entirely.

I appreciate Groundswell’s protesting, and the Inch’s request for submissions, are well -meant. But this Government does not listen to protests (remember Wellington?), nor submissions (remember the gun laws?). They use democracy as the new opiate of the massesthe vain hope of democratic change keeps people passive and obedient.

Submit then. The Government will make some tiny changes to

keep the illusion going - they’ve probably already planned what those changes will be. 95% of the proposal will remain, and the country will be ruined. That’s how the game works.

Or stop playing the game, and just tell the Government it ain’t happening. They’ll blackmail you by charging processors instead, but that’s solvable. The last “Fart Tax” was dropped in 2003 when it became clear farmers wouldn't pay. You can do it again. Will you play the rigged game and lose, or do you intend to win?

Dr Samuel Dennis, Agricultural Scientist.

HORROR-RATA HALLOWEEN

On Saturday, October 29th, Hororata Volunteer Fire Brigade were finally able to hold Horror-Rata Halloween Celebrations with both trick or treating, as well as decorating the Fire Station for the children and their families to have a wander through.

It was a great turnout, with about sixty children and their parents attending, and by all accounts, a great time was had by all. Each year the team decorate, they try to improve on the previous one and give the kids (and the adults) a bit of fun and excitement, so onwards and upwards!

“None of this would be possible without the help from multiple individuals in our community! We have people who have donated their time and props to help decorate, others who have donated bags of lollies, and of course, the wonderful people who have allowed the children to trick or treat at their homes, providing a safe and welcoming environment.

“I would like to give our sincere thanks to all of these people, and a big thank you to the children and their parents for coming and making it such an enjoyable afternoon,” commented Chief Fire Officer Bruce Sayer

The festive season is approaching quickly, and this time of year often puts more pressure on families. Over the next six weeks, a few businesses are collecting items for the Darfield Foodbank. This is a wonderful way to help support the local community over Christmas and brighten up the festive season for people in need.

If you would like to donate any non-perishable items, including tea, coffee, milo, hot chocolate, Christmas treats, decorations, toiletries or anything that would brighten up someone’s day then you can drop them at:

• Darfield Physiotherapy and Gym (box by reception area)

• The Networking Group (on a Wednesday at The Fat Beagle Cafe from 9:15am - 10:30am)

The Darfield Foodbank has been very busy recently handing out food parcels to needy folks. Their numbers have more than doubled in the last month. There have been a lot of emergency food parcels going out to folks in crisis.

“We have also been able to supply bag loads of clothes to those in need and facilitate delivery of free furniture and whiteware. During winter, a team of volunteers collected, chopped and delivered dry firewood for those in extreme need of warm houses. We rely heavily on donations of all kinds and volunteers to help with every aspect of our work. I want to thank all the local folks who have donated honey, sugar, meat, veggies, firewood and

money to help keep us running. I also want to honour every volunteer who has actively been a part of our work, we couldn’t do it without you. Thank you very much,” commented Rose Craven , Foodbank organiser.

2022 GOLF INTERPROVINCIAL

The annual 2022 Men’s South Island Interprovincial Golf Tournament was hosted by Hororata Golf Club last weekend. The course was in impressive condition, with many players commenting that it was in the best condition they had ever seen This is a credit to greenkeeper Andrew Bell and the team of volunteers, including Al Sime for their tireless work to bring the course up to the standard it was presented in. Canterbury went into the event as defending champions, with hopes high that they could defend the title they won last year in Ashburton. The Canterbury team had a few familiar faces from last year's team, including Hororata Golf Club local Dominic Brettkelly, who was playing in

the number one position.

The format saw eight-man amateur teams from Southland, Otago, Aorangi, Canterbury and Tasman come together to play each other in a round-robin competition of singles match play. The draw was a ‘split draw’ format, with the five teams playing seventy two holes without a bye.

On day one, Canterbury came up against Southland and Aorangi, with both causing the Cantabrians a few challenges before they managed to come away with two team victories.

The Southland match ended 4.53.5, and the Aorangi match was a slightly wider margin, with the team coming away with a 5-3 victory.

With two wins from two, Canterbury moved into day two in pole position, with Otago being the next closest team in contention after day one. Canterbury navigated their opponents Otago and Tasman relatively comfortably, led by home-town favourite Dominic, who recorded a 7/6 victory over Otago’s Inia Logan and a 6/4 victory over Tasman’s Nick Franzmann, a round which

featured some powerful scoring.

The final result against Otago was a convincing 6.5-1.5 win. The Tasman match was won in an even more impressive fashion 7-1.

After the completion of round four, Canterbury were once again crowned the South Island Interprovincial champions with a perfect four games from four record with twenty three individual wins. Rounding out the podium were Southland in second and Otago in third.

Coinciding with the Men’s event, the U19 Boys South Island Interprovincial between Canterbury and Otago was also played, featuring six players (4x U19s and 2x U16s) from each region who competed against each other in four different match play format rounds. This began with reverse match play singles and best ball on Saturday and then on Sunday a round of foursomes in the morning and straight match play singles in the afternoon.

The Canterbury team included Max Edwards . The Canterbury Boys managed to take out the event by a score of 11.56.5.

ZONTA SPORTS AWARD WINNER

On Thursday, October 27th, Darfield High School (DHS) joined other secondary schools from across Canterbury and the West Coast, for the annual Zonta Sports Awards, held at the Hornby Club.

These awards are in their 31st year and celebrate sporting successes across multiple categories, from individual or team contribution to administration and outstanding achievements for young women and young sportsmen in their chosen sport/sports.

DHS were inspired to nominate a very talented young sportswoman for a new category - Most Innovative School Sport or Physical Activity.

In July, Lexie Sinclair Dockerill came up with an idea to start a Multisport Squad for DHS. Through her efforts and with her own multisport experience, she saw an opportunity to encourage others who may be interested to give multisport a go. This has proved very successful, and DHS are grateful to Lexie for her foresight and initiative.

DHS were honoured to have been awarded first prize in the new category, which provides opportunities within the school to engage more students in sport and activities and to celebrate innovation and formal and informal opportunities with their Multisport Programme. “Well done Lexie, for the effort you have put into creating and supporting the squad and passing on your own experiences and skill to others selflessly. Congratulations on winning

the Award on behalf of DHS,” commented DHS Sports Coordinator, Pip Deans

“As the leader of the Programme, I was invited to attend the Award Ceremony. Receiving this Award was a huge achievement for us and very honouring. I had no idea we had won the Award,” commented Lexie proudly. “When receiving the Award, the Regional Sports Director for School Sport Canterbury presenter, Jon Derry, asked if I could say a few words about what the group is, what the Programme involved and how the idea came to mind. Put on the spot for a speech was not what I was expecting, and was definitely a bit of a shock! I spoke about how the idea came to mind while I was watching a race I was supposed to be

competing in. I noticed how much the kids enjoy the sport, and it should be more accessible for students to be able to try it out. My intentions for the students are to provide encouragement and support for those who are interested and keen to participate in and out of school. I was surprised at how many kids were wanting to be a part of the Programme!

“A big part of this Programme has been thanks to Pip Deans, DHS Sports Coordinator, as she has helped organise activities and register us in the events. Pip is also great at supporting our school and very passionate about encouraging kids to join a sport. I really appreciate everyone who has contributed to this huge achievement for DHS,” Lexie concluded.

2022 SHOW PRESIDENT

The 2022 Courtenay A&P Show President is well-known local Jenny Gallagher , who shares a passion for her local community. She has many interests, including family, travel, gardening and crafts, and is involved with many community groups, including the Kirwee Civil Defence.

There has been a real family history connected to the Show for Jenny, with her father Willie Henderson, and grandfather J.D Henderson all being past Presidents. Jenny’s husband Terry (current Treasurer), Terry’s father Graham and grandfather David have also been Presidents. Jenny and Terry’s daughter Tania is also the current Junior Vice President. Jenny has also held

many other roles within the Show Committee over the years.

“The Show has continued its success due to many generations of numerous local families,” commented Jenny.

Jenny’s involvement with the Show first started when she was at primary school, entering printing and painting, as well as the pet lamb section. After she was married, she started entering jams, preserves, cooking, knitting and the flower sections.

Jenny has chosen a fantastic theme this year, ‘Women in Agriculture’, which will be showcased at the Show. A variety of female representatives from different organisations, including Dairy Women's Network, Rural Women, Barenbrug and a Texel stud, will be on hand to demonstrate the key roles women play in the rural sector.

“Rural shows are an important part of country life and highlight the opportunity for rural families

to live a diverse lifestyle,” continued Jenny.

“My role on the day is to meet the judges from each section and mingle with competitors and the public. The Committee have been very busy in the lead-up to the Show, with organising all of our different sections, promoting the Show and attending working bees, which also take place throughout the year. Our groundsman, who is very efficient and dedicated, has the grounds looking fabulous.

“I am very proud to be this year’s President and am delighted to showcase what my local Show has to offer. It will be a great family day out with something for all ages. So pop along, say hi, and enjoy the Show.

“I would like to take this opportunity to also sincerely thank the Committee for all their support in helping make the 2022 Courtenay A&P Show a success,” Jenny concluded.

NEW TROPHY DONATED

This year there is a new trophy at the Show, donated in memory of the well-known, late Mrs Patricia Henderson. The Memorial Cup will be awarded to the person who earns the most points in the Rose Classes, in the Cut Flower Section at the Show. Patricia was an exhibitor and supporter of the Courtenay A&P Show for numerous years. She was also heavily involved in the local community, holding many roles in the past with different groups.

Patricia grew up in Hororata, she married Graham Henderson in 1961, purchasing a farm in Greendale, establishing both flower and vegetable gardens. Renowned for her 'green fingers', she could turn a derelict plot into a riot of colour and feed literally an army on the produce from her three vegetable gardens.

“Mum was a generous lady, so I knew she would want to give something back to the community, she was all about community and helping others,” commented Patricia’s daughter Catherine.

“Donating a cup is not just about honouring her memory, but a way of giving back and supporting the Courtenay A&P Association, as well as creating an opportunity for someone to be recognised for their efforts. I know mum would be happy that she was providing this opportunity.

“I was encouraged by mum to enter the Show when I was young, and I recall winning the Children’s Floral Section on many occasions. My sand saucers were apparently ‘legendary’ thanks to the guidance and opportunities mum gave us to practice at home. Often the flowers I exhibited were grown in ‘my’

garden. Mum motivated my ‘connection with the land’ by setting aside a plot for just my sister and I. Gentleman’s Buttonhole was also another category that I excelled in - due to my mum's inherited attention to detail skill,” continued Catherine.

“Patricia supported many avenues at the Show, she was often seen in the Darfield High School PTA’s catering tent helping to prepare and serve the meals. As a child, if I could not find my mum at the ‘big’ Show it was a safe bet she would be in the catering tent.

“In recent years, mum was appointed the role of assisting competitors stage their entries in the Home Industries. In latter years, mum’s limited physical mobility made staging her entries difficult. She would start the night before with the picking procedure, she had numerous ‘tricks’ on how to keep the abundance of floral blooms looking at their best!

Since moving back to New Zealand, I was mum’s legs and positioned the entries on the trestle table for mum with the assistance from the patient and welcoming stewardess, the late

Mrs Westaway (this is what makes a small country event uniquewelcoming and encompassing).

Every year, mum would tentatively say this is going to be my last year, but with a wee bit of encouragement, mum kept exhibiting. I was so incredibly proud of her, she never gave up. This was her trademark - strong and positive.

“This will be the first year there will be no entries from my mum. I am going to find it incredibly hard not getting to the Kirwee Community Hall at the crack of dawn, unloading the boot of not only mum’s car, but my car as well, with all her exquisite goodies. I will miss seeing those red, blue and green prize cards and those coveted ribbons.

“I encourage everyone to enter and attend the Show, it’s a great day out. As mum would say, it’s not all about winning, it’s about taking part and endorsing this unique community event ensuring its perpetuity,” Catherine concluded.

PATRONESS SUPPORT

Adrienne Begg is very honoured to have been named as one of the Patronesses of the Courtenay A&P Association, at the 2022 AGM.

“I probably have attended the show for about 77 years. I was Assistant Secretary from 1977 and Secretary from 1982 - 2012, President in 2015 and received the R.A.S. Medal for Excellence in Agriculture.

“With all the modern technology, secretarial and Show entering now online things have changed

from my days.

“I am still involved on Show day, and I wish President Jenny Gallagher and her Committee a very successful and enjoyable Show,” commented Adrienne.

GRAIN AND SEED

The Grain and Seed Section has classes for grains like wheat and barley, peas, ryegrass seed, clover seed, brassicas and vegetable seeds. There are also classes for seed potatoes, bales

of hay and samples of chaff. We have excellent support from the local grain agents, by keeping samples at harvest time and entering them on behalf of their clients.

On the morning of the Show, the samples are set out and judging starts at 10am.

Graeme Marshall, Grain and Seed Convenor.

EQUESTRIAN SECTION

The Courtenay A&P Horse Section is excited to be running again with the full atmosphere of an A&P Show.

We are continuing to make our Show inviting to a wider range of competitors, we have added new classes in the Pleasure Section, also looking at making our Hunter Round the Rings Jumps more inviting to competitors that are new to the competition. We are also now allowing people to measure their horse or pony on the day, therefore making it

easier for competitors that only enter occasionally in an A&P. Our Classes start at 8.30am, with our traditional A&P Showing Classes in the main ring, our Pleasure Sections are in the paddock by the cemetery. If you are interested in seeing the Harness Horses (pulling a cart or jig), you will find them over in the paddock on the north side of the cemetery, at 9am. For those that love to see our big Clydesdale and Heavy Horses, they will be in the main ring at

11am, and lastly, our exciting Jumping Section starts after the Machinery Parade.

We would like to publicly thank our judges and stewards that kindly volunteer their time to make our Show a success. Also, a big thank you to all our competitors for entering, we wish you all the best of luck and hope you have a most enjoyable day.

Jocelyn Thrower, Equestrian Convenor.

SHEEP SECTION

Last year, due to Covid restrictions, we were only able to run the Gift Lamb Competition, which was very well supported thanks to all the local farmers. This year

we are looking forward to welcoming back the rest of the sheep breeds, pet lambs and wool.

KIRWEE TIPPLE

Kirwee Netball Club will be at the Courtenay A&P Show this year, selling Pimm’s. The Club try and find fun, new ideas each year to raise funds for new uniforms and equipment.

Pimm’s has a dark brown colour with a reddish tint, and a subtle taste of spice and citrus fruit.

The Kirwee Netball girls will be serving this delicious cocktail mixed with lemonade, gingerale and soda water in a glass with ice and fruit, topped with fresh mint.

Pimm’s is an English brand of gin-based beverage. It was first produced in 1823 by James Pimm, a farmer’s son from Kent. James became the owner of an oyster bar in the City of London, near the Bank of England. He offered the tonic (a gin-based drink containing a secret mixture of herbs and liqueurs) as an aid to digestion, serving it in a small tankard known as a ‘No. 1 Cup’, hence its subsequent name.

Pimm’s was so popular at the oyster bar, that James Pimm

started selling it around London for ‘three shillings a bottle’ in the 1800’s. Commercial distribution followed in 1865, as did other ‘cup’ variations including ones made with scotch, rum, brandy, rye whiskey and vodka.

Pimm’s caught on with the British and became popular at prestigious events like the Chelsea Flower Show and the Henley Royal Regatta, along with becoming the go-to drink at British university garden parties.

A Pimm’s bar first popped up at the 1971 Wimbledon tournament, and now more than 300,000 glasses of the recipe are served to spectators every year.

In New Zealand there are often Pimm’s bars at Fete’s, large A&P Shows and events.

Now for the first time, Show goers over 18 years can sit down, catch up with friends and enjoy this cold, refreshing drink at the Courtenay A&P Show.

Please note it is a cash only bar.

SPINNING A WOOLLY YARN

Spinning a Woolly Yarn is an inspiring story of a man determined to fulfil his passion for Merion sheep and wool.

Author, David Cone has spent fifty years in the sheep and wool industry, both in New Zealand and around the globe.

The book he has recently published is an autobiography that recounts

with significant people he has met during that time.

In

readable memoir/

biography, David tracks his long winding road to eventual success. It is a story that reflects the degree of commitment, tenacity and determination required to succeed in a business that’s exposed to many innumerable variables and obstacles.

By experiencing numerous ups and downs over the years, David offers an on-the-ground view of New Zealand’s sheep and wool industry.

He also introduces the reader to a host of richly colourful, rural characters he has met, worked with, or dealt with. These yarns from the shearing shed, the farm paddock, the ‘smoko’ break, the after work drink and the bunk house are gems in their own right. All this rich reading is augmented and illustrated by a host of authentic photos from around the world.

David is launching his book at Courtenay A&P Show, in the Main Shearing Shed at 11:15am.

DEERSTALKERS 50TH CELEBRATION

The Malvern Branch of the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association (NZDA) celebrated its 50th anniversary recently, with a running boar shoot, get together and shared dinner at the Darfield Shooting Centre on Saturday, October 15th. The day started with the running boar being operated for all comers, with some past and present members having a crack at the moving target. There were some good and some not-sogood displays of marksmanship, but it was good fun enjoyed by all. We were honoured to welcome founding member John Creamer for our afternoon tea, he was able to share the origins of the Branch and the objectives of those who initiated it being formed. John and the late Keith Munro were largely responsible and had quite modest expectations of what the Branch would become. The initial meetings were held in the old Memorial Hall in Darfield, or in a small shed behind John’s house. From small beginnings the Branch grew and when the Kirwee Miniature Rifle Club expressed a desire to build a new facility to house the Club, the opportunity to work together was not lost. The Darfield Shooting Centre was funded by many working bees and

various contract arrangements, by volunteers contributing time and labour to the build. A true community effort created a new home for Malvern NZDA and the Darfield Smallbore Club.

John spoke of the camaraderie and shared adventures of the members from the beginning, and the value of the Branch to secure access to hunting areas and indeed the ability to issue permits in some areas, where administration of hunting was vested in the local Branch.

Construction of the Benmore Hut in Thirteen Mile Bush was another significant undertaking of the group, which today serves a numerous number of visitors.

When the Branch began they never really envisaged what it might be today, but John was very pleased with how the Branch has developed over the years.

In honour of the 50th year, a cake baked and iced in the new NZDA branding by Lorraine Ridgen, was cut by John and shared, while conversations flowed.

The afternoon resumed with more shooting of steel silhouettes that challenged the shooters even more, as the telescopic sights showed up the targets, but hitting them was something different.

A shared dinner was then

enjoyed, with thirty five people staying to enjoy the meal. Further speeches were made by past Secretary Jules Snoyink, President Graeme Williams and National President Craig Benbow . In recognition of two people that have been significant contributors for many years, Colin McRae was thanked for his tireless dedication to the Branch, as well as his special care of the shooting centre and its grounds. Somewhat fittingly, Colin then won the raffle!

Presentation of a new trophy tankard, which will be awarded annually to the person within the Branch that contributes the most over the year, was made to long serving Treasurer Marcel van Leeuwen. A bottle of something really good was also presented so the tankard could be christened properly, and after taking care of the Branch's finances for twenty nine years, it was a just reward. Recalling the significant events of the past 50 years and some of the notable people who have been members and shared adventures was a common theme, but also the community effort of both Branch members and the Branch as a whole to provide facilities, repair and maintain backcountry huts, undertake pest control and undertake organised hunts across the country for members.

Many yarns were shared and stories were told about adventures in the closer mountains and on Stewart Island, Fiordland and other parts.

Plans are already underway to get members heading off to various parts of the country to hunt and create more memories for the next 50 years.

BOWLING HONOUR

In November 1992, Dennis and Barbara Herrick were contacted by a member of an Australia Lawn Bowling team, who was wanting to set up the first ever International Deaf Lawn Bowls Championships, which would be held in Melbourne, in January 1993.

“Barbara and I jumped at the chance to be involved, as we especially wanted to highlight Deaf Lawn Bowls New Zealand in these championships,” commented Dennis.

“Immediately we had to start raising funds so we could have a New Zealand team of six men and six women participate.

“We have both been playing lawn bowls for many years, starting at the Riccarton Bowling Club and now we currently play at the West Melton Bowling Club as we reside in the area.

“Over the past thirty years we have been focused on fundraising for the eight Tournaments that we have participated in, Melbourne 1993, Scotland 1995, South Africa 1999, NZ (Christchurch) 2003, Wales 2007, Australia (Perth) 2011, Northern Ireland (Belfast) 2015, NZ (Christchurch) 2019 and coming up, Scotland in 2023,” Dennis concluded.

In 2007, Dennis became President of International Deaf Bowls Federation and will continue in this role until his planned retirement in Scotland in 2023, which will be a total of eighteen years at the helm of such an amazing organisation. Barbara and Dennis have bought home countless medals whilst representing Deaf Lawn Bowls New Zealand teams, and have led numerous fundraising ventures raising thousands of

dollars in support of their team and country.

In October 2022, Deaf Lawn Bowls New Zealand inducted Barbara and Dennis as Life members. An honour that is

very well deserved.
