The 41st annual Darfield Artweek was officially opened on Friday, October 7th, by Nicola Grigg, MP for Selwyn. Contributing artists, sponsors and guests celebrated the opening of the annual community art exhibition, which saw the first viewing of 375 artworks by 160 artists.

The Malvern Community Arts Council (MCAC) Premier Award went to Vicki Knudsen (Darfield) for her painting ‘All Said & Done’. Dorle Pauli , Artweek’s Judge for 2022, commented, “The medium is used to great effect to express the stillness, timeless dignity and perhaps mournfulness of a scene which is often overlooked in our busy, everyday lives.”

The Friends of MCAC Award went to Jo Loughnan (Christchurch) for her fresh and informal mixed media work, ‘Waves’.

The compelling, highly engaging and sophisticated ‘Red Thread’ by Annika Maenpaa , was awarded the Buddle Findlay Award.

‘The Estuary’ by Margaret White (Rolleston) received the RJ Crouch Award, for its beautiful execution, celebrating the more intimate, peaceful and lesser-known locations of New Zealand.

The Gordon Harris Award went to Gray Leanard (Prebbleton) for his complete set of miniatures, for their assured composition and experimental play on shape and colour.

The Youth Category, in its second year, attracted many entries. The Bob Gillard Youth Award went to Ainsley Worling (Ashburton) for ‘Stagnant’.

Dorle Pauli commented, “An informal, modest but

beautifully observed water-colour which shows remarkable technical competence.”

Molly Mannering (Hororata) was awarded the drawing room youth merit award for her enigmatic and highly individual work, reminiscent of the surrealist tradition, ‘Chewing Gum for Eyes’. Darfield Artweek is currently open at the Darfield Recreation Centre (daily from 10am - 5pm and Sunday, October 16th, from 10am - 4pm). Admission is free, allowing everyone to visit and appreciate the breadth of artistic talent within our community.

PARISH SPRING FAIR

The Hororata Parish Spring Fair is a traditional country fair with an emphasis on family entertainment, making it a ‘must do’ for many people. After missing the event last year, the Parish is looking forward to welcoming everyone back to the Hororata Domain this Labour Day.

The always-popular Country Auction will return, and as well as offering a huge range of second-hand items at bargain prices, it will also feature the Agri Garden Art Competition. This contest challenges locals to ‘show their No.8 wire skills’ creating a fabulous sculpture that will be auctioned, with all proceeds going to the Hororata Parish. This is a chance to secure a one-off piece of art for your garden, and the theme this year is ‘movement’. The Children’s Races are always great fun and entertaining for people to watch! Kids can join in the sack, egg and spoon, and other fun races at 10.30am,

with great prizes up for grabs. Pony rides and bouncy castles will keep the little ones entertained, while adults can browse the stalls offering delicious homemade jams and speciality foods, handmade crafts, a wide range of plants and a large selection of second-hand books.

Kids can also enter the Creative Kids Competition, with this year’s categories being spring sand saucers and photographs.

Just bring your creation along to the Fair by 10am to enter into the Competition, great prizes are up for grabs.

The Fair is the Hororata Parish’s biggest fundraiser each year and contributed to the pastoral care that it offers in this rural community.

So head along to the Hororata Domain on Labour Day for a fun family day out, entry is free. Held wet or fine.

BLOODLINE

Darfield born and raised, singer/songwriter, Sam Heselwood, announces himself to the world with the enthralling new EP, ‘Bloodline’. Across six tracks, Sam takes listeners on an intimate journey through his life. He explores topics surrounding family, love and mental health as he details highs, lows and everything in between. He isn’t afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve, as the singer boldly unpacks stories of growing up. ‘Bloodline’ is an ode to family. Throughout the project, Sam explores the often turbulent nature of family relationships and the unconditional love it brings. Each song relates to a family member. Such as on ‘Four’, where Sam explores growing up through his parent's divorce, or ‘Don’t Speak’, which explores his relationship with his dad after the passing of his grandad. ‘Closer Now’, is a song about realising the bond you have with your sister as you grow up.

Sam has been busy leading up to the release of ‘Bloodline’. The emerging artist's previous singles charted at No.4 on NZ Hot Single charts, received airtime on ‘ZM’s Local’s Only’ show, and major playlist additions on Spotify, including landing on the cover of ‘Fresh Finds Pop’, and an interview on Stuff. Sam commented, “It’s pretty awesome because I put so much personal stuff into those songs, and I’m trying to use my experiences to encourage people to speak about mental health. Guys in general, don’t get things off our minds all the time. We need to treasure the little things in life and speak our minds,” Sam concluded.

Sam will be celebrating the release of 'Bloodline' on Saturday, October 15th, at Space Academy.

RALLY OF NEW ZEALAND

Continued from page 2…. “On Friday, we headed south of Auckland to Raglan at 6am to complete our first day of racing. Unfortunately we encountered both overheating and electrical issues, which led to time penalties throughout the day, but we managed to complete all stages and get back to service, where our team successfully got on top of both our issues so we could head out for Saturday's stages. We finished up sixth on Friday, which was round five of NZRC.

“Heading out on Saturday morning saw us travelling north, based out of Kaukapakapa for the day. The day was dark, gloomy and very wet - nothing like we had raced in before. The stages were treacherous, and it would have to be a cautious approach to make it to the finish. The day started slowly with the cancellation of the first stage due to an earlier accident. We had a good run through SS9 sitting in fifth place, SS10 was then also cancelled due to another accident,” Gemma explained.

“So we headed back to our midday service, eager to get back out for the afternoon loop, but the weather still hadn't let up. Getting through SS11 we had edged closer to fourth place. Heading into SS12, we wanted to stay close enough to the front runners to be able to jump on any misfortune they may have had.

Unfortunately, it wasn't to be, we ran wide on a corner that tightened, which saw us stuck in a deep ditch. Spectators tried their hardest to get us back

on the road, but were sadly unsuccessful.

“Rallying unfortunately, has the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. We saw our chances of second or third place slip right from our fingers.

With the DNF on Saturday, we ended the year in sixth place.

“Overall, it was a great experience and one to tick off the bucket list. Next, we are heading to complete Day 1 of SI Targa in Nelson on October 14th, as part of the Mainland Series,” Gemma concluded.

2022 HIGHLAND GAMES CHIEFTAIN

Fourth generation Hororata resident and historian, Kate Foster , has been named the 2022 Hororata Highland Games Chieftain.

Kate is the ‘keeper of local stories’, not just of her family but of the Hororata community; she is passionate about the history of the area. A descendant of prominent politician Sir John Hall, remembered as a parliamentary advocate for the Votes for Women campaign, Kate has deep roots in Hororata. Sir John Hall was passionate about the community of Hororata and the wider area. He was involved in the 19th century in establishing many of the facilities that are used today, the Domain, the Hall and the Church. He was an innovative farmer pioneering new technologies on his run, Terrace Station. Kate now lives in the Terrace Station homestead, her ancestral home and is a trustee of the Terrace Station Charitable Trust, which is responsible for its care as a listed heritage building. This rural area is renowned for leading the way, innovating and making things happen for its community, Kate reflected. “The Hororata Domain, where the Games are held, has been in the care of the community for 144 years and has hosted many wonderful events. In the early 1900’s people would travel by train from Christchurch to Coalgate and then walk the 6km to Hororata to enjoy a day at the horse races. Newspaper reports describe other jovial gatherings, with entertaining

activities, including at one time tossing cabers. So, you see that what we are doing now with the Hororata Highland Games is just carrying on this tradition, one of which we are very proud,” commented Kate.

“I am honoured to be the Chieftain for the 11th Hororata Highland Games. I think what we are achieving as a community is extraordinary, and we are successful because we work together. Our next project is developing the Hororata Hall and the land around it into a community hub, taking what our forbears like Sir John Hall left us and making sure it serves our people for the next century,” Kate concluded. The role of the Chieftain dates back to when Scottish clans’ all had a ‘Chieftain’ as the leader of their family. The highland games allowed the Chieftain to find out who were the

strongest and fastest that would represent them in battle.

At the Hororata Highland Games, the Chieftain holds an honorary position. When considering whom to nominate as Chieftain, the committee looks for someone who is a leader and someone who represents the values of the community.

“The Games is all about our community, we are making history with this event right now. Having Kate as the Chieftain is special, she is a leader who gives much of her time to several community organisations. She helps connect us to our past while encouraging us to look to the future,” commented Executive Officer of the Trust Cindy Driscoll

The 11th Hororata Highland Games will be held in the Hororata Domain on November 5th, 2022.

NICOLA GRIGG - OPINION PIECE

As the National Party’s spokesperson for Women, one of the most pressing concerns I hear from women across the country are the real - and worseninginequities in their healthcare.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in New Zealand women, with one in nine women being affected by it in their lifetime.

At present, the free mammogram screening programme is available to women aged 45 - 69, but data shows New Zealand is now lagging behind other comparative counties like Australia, Canada and the United States.

We also know that around 80 percent of women who die from breast cancer are aged 50 years or older so, with that in mind, this week our Health spokesperson Dr Shane Reti and I have announced that if National can form a government next year, we will extend free mammograms to women up to the age of 74. Labour campaigned on this in 2017 but, five years on has absolutely failed to deliver on yet another empty election promise.

According to the Breast Cancer Foundation, around 240 women aged 70-74 are diagnosed with breast cancer every year - and about 65 of them will die. By that logic, in the past five years since Labour have been in Government, over 300 women in this age bracket have died when - had they been screened - they may have survived.

In my view, too many lives have been lost from this disease, and if increasing the screening age saves 65 lives a year, then it is worth it.

To make this announcement we have worked closely with the

Breast Cancer Foundation. We believe extending mammograms to this group of women will increase the tests from 18 in a lifetime to 20. We expect to introduce the policy in our first Budget, at a cost of $21.6 million over four years and would scale it up over time.

In the first year, we expect to reach 8,000 women and 28,700 women from the second year. Despite the enormous pressure the health sector is currently under, we do believe there is capacity in the system for this.

Ten months ago, about 50,000 women had missed their mammograms over the Covid period, but ten months on, providers have reduced the backlog of scans by 20,000. We are confident the system has the capacity for this, especially when immigration settings align better with the health workforce crisis.

A lot of women ask me about lowering the age bracket as well, and this is something I will

continue to take advice on from clinicians and experts. Currently, Australia offers free screening to women from 40 years of age, and the UK published an extensive study in August 2020, called the UK-AGE study, which showed the strongest evidence yet that screening women from 40-49 is beneficial (the UK screening programme starts at 50).

We expect this to change attitudes toward screening younger women, and we will pick up this issue once the 70-74 age extension is approved.

National believes in spending public money on early intervention, rather than on the proverbial ambulances at the bottom of cliffs. We strongly believe that early detection is key to wellbeing after a breast cancer diagnosis, and this will, in turn, save lives. What could possibly be more important than that?

BELLYFUL SELWYN

Last Sunday, Selwyn MP Nicola Grigg, spent the morning with the fabulous gals from Bellyful Selwyn, cooking up a storm for new mums and dads in the district.

“The Bellyful NZ Cookathons are the best way to spend a Sunday morning - creating hundreds of curries, lasagnas, macaroni cheese and soupsdelicious and nutritious meals for families who need a helping hand when coping with having a life-changing newborn at home,” commented Nicola Grigg. The main thing Cookathon volunteers need is a willingness to wear a hairnet! Attendees need to be prepared to roll their sleeves up and pitch in with anything from chopping onions or making the perfect cheese sauce, to doing the dishes and labelling

containers. People don’t have to be a chef, but some basic cooking skills would help.

“A huge thank you to the amazing farmers who supply Meat the Need NZ and all the other incredibly generous sponsors. If you’d like to help in any way, please visit the link below for various avenues to donate through,” Nicola concluded.

Meat the Need NZ is a nationallybased charity originally designed to supply much-needed meat to City Missions and food banks. The meat is donated by farmers, processed, packed and delivered to those most in need. The charity was founded by Wayne Langford from Golden Bay.

Last Saturday, conditions were perfect for Te Ara Kākāriki’s final Plantout day of this season.

Volunteers worked in two groups, with one starting the morning planting along West Coast Road with a lovely backdrop of the snow-dusted mountains. Here they planted over 500 plants of dry woodland and totara forest. The site is one of over 120 in Selwyn established by Te Ara Kākāriki in their efforts to create a corridor of native steppingstones providing passage for birds to travel across the Canterbury Plains.

In the afternoon, the group headed to the property of Frank Hakkaart, formerly the Hororata Hotel and now the Artist's In pottery studio and gift shop.

The old beer garden was transformed into a native Greendot, and Frank hopes

that once established it will not only attract native birds but also be a nice backdrop for a sculpture trail.

Another group extended two special existing sites, with the first neighbouring Lords Bush, in the third consecutive year of planting. The other is Te Ara Kākāriki’s legacy site Ōkakaraiti on Pocock’s Road, where volunteers added 300 seedlings to what will eventually be a site with 30,000 plants. The Clarke family of Darfield enjoyed their day and son Hadrian proudly said, “We've been coming to plant with Te Ara Kākāriki since I was two!”. He planted alongside his mother Andrea , siblings James and Nola , cousin Lilly, and their international student Pai from Thailand. The girls also took part in a harakeke flax weaving workshop, creating putiputi flowers.

GREAT OPPORTUNITY

Recently the Junior Crusaders have been in camp gaining valuable experience. After the camp, the team took on the Junior Highlanders and bet them by a large margin.

West Melton based Callum Summerfield and Weedons based Lachlan Harris-Tatana were selected to be part of the camp and team. This opportunity and learning experience for players is extremely valuable. Callum commented, “It was a really great experience, and it was fantastic having the types of coaches we did around us, I learnt heaps, and the game was great to be a part of.”

Lachlan commented, “The camp gave me numerous opportunities to learn and grow. Being selected for the camp and Junior Crusader team was a huge accomplishment. The coaching staff helped me heaps along the way, and the boys in camp all played well together, which allowed us to beat a good Highlanders side.”

Lachlan has also recently been named in the Under 18 New Zealand Māori Team. What an outstanding achievement! LachlanHarris-Tatana.

RAISER

MACHINERY TOURNAMENT

After an anxious few days leading up to Greendale Golf Club’s biggest tournament (the Machinery Fundraising Tournament) on their calendar, the weather gods gave the organisers a break, and the field were able to complete 18 holes umbrella free on Wednesday, October 5th. Not long after the last group finished, a sharp polar blast punched its way through the course as the players looked on from the warmth of the clubhouse.

Greendale Golf Club has faced huge challenges in the last two years that would probably have forced permanent closure on many other country courses. As well as the loss of revenue during the Covid Lockdown, the club suffered further challenges when the Selwyn river burst its banks on two separate occasions leaving much of the course underwater.

The first flood caused substantial damage leaving greens and fairways with tons of rubble and silt over them, which closed the course for two months.

Thousands of volunteer manhours and kind offers from several businesses donating earth moving machinery with drivers/operators was the only reason the course could reopen so soon.

Darfield High School (DHS) students were part of the Canterbury Rugby School Leavers Festival, which was the Curtain Raiser for the Canterbury v Northland Quarter Final game, held last Saturday, October 8th, at Orangetheory Stadium. Four teams (two from Christchurch Boys High, the Selwyn Combined Team and DHS) entered the 10-aside competition.

Although DHS placed fourth in the event, they all loved the experience they gained by playing on Canterbury’s number one field. After the Festival, teams were asked to form a guard of honour as Canterbury and Northland ran onto the field. This is an experience many of the players will never forget. Well done to all players from the area that attended the Festival as part of DHS or Selwyn Combined.

The more recent second flood closed the front nine holes for two weeks. Once again, volunteers mucked in to help Greendale’s greenkeeper of nearly thirty years, Mick

Brickwood, enabling members to play all holes again.

A huge thanks from the Club to all the sponsors and volunteers who made the Machinery Fundraising Tournament a great success. Also, a heartfelt thanks to everyone who has help the club over the past year stay open.

The 18-hole course is located

along Coaltrack Road, Greendale and is approximately a 12 minute drive from Darfield.

The Club always welcomes new members, visit: www.greendalegolf.co.nz for more details.

GREENDALE CRICKET CLUB

Greendale Cricket Club got their 2022/23 season off to a winning start with a home victory over an always-strong Sefton side last Saturday. Winning the toss, Sefton elected to bat first. It was a slow day for all batsmen, with little value for shots, courtesy of a mowing mishap in the lead-up. Greendale’s opening bowlers toiled away for limited reward, other than restricting the scoring rate. First change bowler Todd Thomas, on debut, made the most of the windy conditions to get the ball hooping away, snaffling a couple of good wickets. He was backed up well by some miserly bowling from Jed Irvine and Haigh Jebson, both going wicketless but giving up a combined 38 runs

only from their 16 overs. Sefton finished their overs with a very defendable 166/4.

In reply, Greendale made a slow but careful start, seeing out the first 10 overs for no loss of a wicket, and blunting the enthusiasm of the visitors.

Things then looked pretty grim at 102/5, needing just under a run a ball to get home. However, a 61 run partnership and a captains knock from Michael Hughes , a magnificent 71 not out, got Greendale home with 10 balls to spare with 5 wickets in hand.

October 8th marked to official Opening Day of the new season with two rounds of 10 counting shots at 300 yards. Several new club members and visitors were welcomed to the range. Some shooters were away at the Cheltenham Club’s 125th anniversary shoot. For those present at the range it

was a fine day with a tricky wind blowing across the range from the targets towards the shooters, bouncing off the sides of the range. As usual, some shooters were better judges of the wind than others. Andre, Tim and Matthew produced some fine shooting.

The next shoot will be 10 counting shots at 800 and 900 yards.
