Mayoralty (1 vacancy): Sam Broughton: “It’s encouraging to be supported by the community to continue as Mayor. The result is an endorsement of the work our council has put in to partner and work for Selwyn. There is still much to be done and I’m looking forward to the opportunity of the next three years. It’s really exciting for the new councillors joining the team following preliminary results. Well done Lydia Gliddon, Elizabeth Mundt and Phil Deans. Thanks to Jenny Gallagher for all her work for Malvern on Council over the last three years. Thank you to all who stood and voted during the election, and to my family Liz and Elliott for their love and backing.” Malvern Ward (2 vacancies): Lydia Gliddon: “I am so grateful for such a positive response from Malvern. I feel very honoured to be given this opportunity to represent you all, I hope to make you all proud. I'm very excited for what the next chapter holds for us, and the positive changes we can make for Malvern. Thank you to my friends and family for their support and encouragement - without you, we wouldn't be here.” Bob Mugford: “I would like to thank the community for their support, as well as everyone who stood and voted. Congratulations goes to Lydia. I look forward to working with the community over the next term.”

Tawera Community Subdivision (1 vacancy): Sean Ellis: “Thank you to everyone who voted and supported me. My main objective is taking local voices to be heard at Council in Rolleston. I also want to make sure the connection between rural and urban stays strong. I look forward to representing this area.”

Hawkins (2 vacancies): No election was required: Ken May Sharn Nu’u.

West Melton (2 vacancies): No election was required: Calvin Payne Bruce Russell. Ken, Sharn, Calvin and Bruce weren’t contacted by the ’News, for commenting at this stage, but we look forward to introducing them in the near future. ECan Mid-Canterbur/Ōpākihi (40.84% voter return): Ian Mackenzie: “Thanks to everyone for their encouragement and support. It looks like we’ll have a great balanced Council for the next three years. Exciting times are ahead.” John Sunckell: “Thanks to everyone who helped along the way with this election, and a special thank you to all those who voted for me. Great to be back with much to be done, with many questions still unanswered.”

Preliminary results include all ordinary votes received and counted, but not all special votes. Official results, with all ordinary votes and all special votes counted. There were numerous blank voting papers and informal papers returned. A blank voting paper means a voting document on which there is no evidence that the voter has attempted to indicate his or her intention to vote for one or more candidates on the voting document with respect to that election. An informal paper is one that has been placed in the ballot box but was incorrectly completed. Informal votes are not counted in the election of a candidate. The Malvern News will run a piece introducing all elected candidates in a future issue, once final results are confirmed.
