Rēkohu was the name the first Polynesian gave the Islands. The first settlers were known as the Moriori, who were related to Waitaha. It is believed they set forth from the South Island of New Zealand some five hundred years ago.

The Government needs to stop dithering and take action to get more nurses into the country right now - the residents of Darfield and Ellesmere deserve some certainty.
The response hasn’t exactly been positive. Just eighteen offshore migrant nurses have applied for the new Accredited Employer Work Visa in six weeks as of the 15th August - despite the country being over 4,000 nurses short across the board.
As if issues in the aged care sector weren’t bad enough, we also now know ED is just as precarious. Data for the month of May 2022 shows that over 4,000 New Zealanders across the country have left the ED without being seen or treated. But these numbers have been in the thousands every month, as far back as June 2021.
By far, the bigger impact has come from the Government’s resolute refusal to go all out to attract migrant health workers, while the country works to rebuild its domestic workforce. Afterall, they knew this crisis was coming all along.
It should not have come to this. National has been calling for months to end the vaccine mandates for health workers, but even if the Government would deign to listen, the numbers here in Canterbury are not huge and wouldn’t have made an enormous difference.
It is clear to everybody that we have a health workforce crisis that can only be solved by attracting more overseas nurses

I love Selwyn, and have witnessed our district grow from treeless paddocks to a buzzing community while maintaining its rural vibe.
Projects include the refurbishment of the Hororata Community Centre, wastewater for Darfield and Kirwee, rural water upgrades. I have advocated for a rubbish transfer station near Darfield and the upgrading of the main road junction in West Melton and several flooding projects.
I am detailed, persevere, and think conceptually. I am thorough and stand up. I would have a voice and a vote around the Council table, and I would take a stand.
