Spring is upon us again, which means it is the prefect time to have your house treated for Spiders and Flies. When you hear your neighbours mowing their lawns regularly, it’s the beginning. People put their lawn clippings in a bin or compost, the clippings warm up, the flies lay their eggs in them, and once the flies are moving about, the spiders build new webs for the season. Ants will now spread, forming new colonies for the summer. They are becoming quite a problem throughout Canterbury. If you have any trees, even a leaf touching your roof or spouting, cut them away. Keep your pantry shelves, under bench and waste buckets clean. Once you have Ants, you will never get rid of them, BUT you can control them. If you have problems, give us a

NEW RULES - UPGRADES 2022 per million (ppm) in the water when it reaches each property on the supply. Chlorine levels are monitored continuously at the treatment plants to ensure the levels are safe. In Selwyn, there are eighteen unchlorinated schemes that require upgrades and nine water supply schemes are already permanently chlorinated providing effective treatment to keep the water safe for those communities: Upper Selwyn Huts Dalethorpe Hororata Acheron Sheffield/Waddington Springfield Castle Hill Hartleys Road (Malvern Hills) Arthurs Pass.

Under the Water Services Act 2021, passed in November 2021, all councils must provide residual disinfection (chlorine) for public drinking water supplies by November 15th, 2022, unless they have an exemption from the drinking water authority Taumata Arowai.

I can taste/smell the chlorine, why?

What about my pets?

What if I have a skin condition or sensitivity to chlorine? Chlorine can be an irritant for existing skin conditions such as asthma or eczema. If you feel your skin getting dry or itchy, use moisturiser after having a shower or bath. If you notice increased skin irritation, asthma symptoms or other symptoms, seek medical advice from your GP. To minimise exposure to chlorine, try bathing at times of low water demand - in the middle of the day on weekdays, early in the morning (before 7:30am), or late in the evening (after 9:30pm).

WATER

The Council has made a major investment in recent years to upgrade all its water supplies to have a multi-barrier approach using filtration, UV treatment and other barriers at all water treatment plants. The required chlorination provides protection for water within the reticulation system (pipes) between the treatment plant and its users. Chlorination has been used safely and effectively all over the world for more than 100 years as a preventative treatment to avoid contamination of water supplies. It keeps millions of people around the world safe from waterborne disease, including the majority of New TheZealanders.new rules require a minimum dosage of 0.2 parts

CHLORINATION

In the early stages of chlorination you might notice a slight change in taste as the new treated water moves through the scheme and mixes with unchlorinated water in the Council’s reservoirs. However, most users report that this settles after the first few days. At the minimum dose most people should not be able to smell or taste chlorine. However, the smell and taste of chlorine increases when the chlorine is consuming any organics, or when the dose is increased. So being able to smell or taste the chlorine could mean that it is doing its job of treating anything that could make your drinking water unsafe. Alternatively it could mean that the dose has been increased due to a specific situation where we’ve needed to add more to keep the water safe.

If you have fish in outside ponds you will need to either turn down in-coming water to an absolute trickle (this dilutes the chlorine level to a safe amount for your fish) or fill up drums of water and let them sit for at least 24 hours before using (the UV of the sun evaporates chlorine). For fish tanks or bowls inside, fill up a container of water and let it sit for at least 24 hours and then only replace a third of the water at a time. Alternatively, you can buy recommended water conditioners or de-chlorinating kits (sodium thiosulfate) at pet supplies stores.

Local author, Alyse Boaz has just released her third children’s picture book within a year. ‘Robot Ted Forgets His Head’ is a fun rhyming story, about a robot that takes off his head to fit in his short bed, then forgets it the next morning. He leaves a trail of destruction, and it nearly ends in Thedisaster.ideafor Robot Ted Forgets His Head was sparked one day when Alyse said, “I’d forget my head if it wasn’t screwed on”, then she considered the many tasks she does almost Artistrobotically.Robert Scanlan aka Skanz, who illustrated Alyse’s first picture book ‘Royal Blue’, invited children and adults attending Brighton Gallery art classes, to add a small image or touch of colour to his drawings for Robot Ted Forgets His Head. “When Robert showed me the drawings, I was blown away. They’re fun and action-packed. He’s brought the story to life with his great ideas, and it’s nice the way he’s involved the community. Children and adults love the story and entertaining pictures,” added Alyse. Electricity Orion and national power grid operator Transpower are to build a new $58m Grid Exit Point (GXP), and supporting infrastructure to meet record growth in Central Canterbury’s electricity demand. The new GXP, to be built on a thirteen hectare parcel of land in rural Norwood (intersection of Highfield Road and Telegraph Road), will transform high voltage electricity from Transpower’s national grid, down to voltages distributed by Orion to homes and businesses in the Thereregion. are currently two major 220kV-66kV GXPs in Orion’s network, and the new Norwood GXP will increase Orion’s capacity to draw down power from the national grid by 200MW, or 25 percent. Nigel Barbour , Orion Group Chief Executive, said, “the new GXP is a once in fifty year investment in the region’s energy infrastructure, prompted by sustained growth in electricity “Fordemand.the past ten years, we’ve had sustained growth in the number of new customers connecting to our network. More than 4,100 additional homes and businesses joined the network in FY22, and there’s no sign of that letting up. “More people and businesses are choosing electricity as their energy source of choice, and we are seeing greater demand for electricity than ever before. This is accelerating as more heat pumps are being installed for residential use, and businesses swap out coal-fired boilers for cleaner electricity to provide their process heat needs. “Aotearoa has also started its journey of de-carbonising our transport fleet, and we are preparing to power big increases in the number of EVs charging at home and commercially,” Nigel “It’sadded. an exciting time in Canterbury’s electrification journey, and together with Transpower, Orion is proud to be a leading infrastructure provider central to our region’s future sustainability. Maintaining reliability and resilience are also key factors driving the build. “Access to more power from the national grid gives us the headroom we need to maintain the very high levels of reliability and resilience people and businesses depend on. “The new Norwood GXP will be a two-way pipe, capable of uploading as well as downloading power from the national grid. “The national grid does the heavy lifting for local electricity supply and dovetails well with other local power sources such as solar, which are more weather dependent,” Nigel concluded. Transpower New Zealand Chief Executive, Alison Andrew said, “We forecast electricity demand increasing nationally by nearly 70% by 2050 to facilitate New Zealand’s move to a zero-carbon economy. So it’s a really busy time for us and indeed the entire industry,” Alison concluded. Consents have been granted, and construction of two separate but adjacent Orion and Transpower substations and associated infrastructure begins this month, with the new GXP expected to be commissioned by, November 2023.

Only Duncan Jefferis (Round 2) and Tony Stuart (Round 3) managed possible, but with a 19 in the second, Tony got into the shootoff, unfortunately finishing just outside the prizes. Day 2: (Alexandra). A nice clear day presented itself as the shooting began. Dave Folley led the charge with two 20’s and a 19. Good results, with five others getting 20’s and plenty of 19’s. In the middle was the Bodkin Match, and the two teams selected competed well. Team Black shot 87/90 to be 3 targets down, while the Red Team scored 79/90. The shoot-off required a score of 89, which was achieved by four teams, with Gorge Road retaining the Trophy for another year. No shoot-offs for any of the Darfield crew from the day's efforts. Notable highlights for the day were Robin Digby shooting one from the hip in Round 2, and then going on to join the ‘Click Club’ after forgetting to reload his gun. Duncan cleaned his gun, only to have it misfire for a lost target, and had to borrow a gun for the last round.

MALVERN/SELWYN NETBALL

Rip Rugby is a new format of non-contact Rugby for mixed teams (U8, U9, U10 and U11) with scrums, lineouts, and ball kicking allowed. It is for those who’d like to learn to play your rugby without any tackle.

Held at the immaculate Darfield Rugby Football Club grounds on Saturday, September 3rd, the ‘Let It Rip’ Rip Rugby Fest was an outstanding event complimented by the weather. The Fest marked the end of the season for seven of the fourteen Rip Rugby teams competing in the Metro Competition. It began with the boys and girls getting to meet Women’s Rugby Player/ Coach Melissa Baer and ex-All Black Colin Slade, who signed boots, rugby balls, photos, socks and Rips. The Rugby celebrities ran a pre-game practice session for the players, focussing on kicking and passing skills. Next was a hit the cross-bar competition resulting in two players each winning one of Colin’s signed boots. The pre-game fun didn’t stop there, the teams ran through a guard of honour (video on DRFC Facebook page) made up of spectators from the seven teams that attended. (Lyttleton Seals, Christchurch FC Red Dragons, Christchurch FC Black Dragons, Sydenham RC, Parklands Roosters, Darfield Demons and Darfield Devils). The teams then got to show off their Rugby skills by playing against their fellow Metro opponents in a festival format. The games were played in great spirit, putting smiles on everyone’s dials. The team comradery continued during the post-game celebrations with the help of DRFC committee members giving out prizes to all the teams and then sharing food and conversation. On the day there were many winners, but the overall winner was Rugby itself and its ability to bring communities together who love this amazing sport! Go to the Darfield RFC Juniors web page to see what Rip Rugby is all about.

GRAFTING WORKSHOP AND SCION WOOD Saturday 10th September, 1 - 3pm Darfield Community Garden, Russell Street If wet - the workshop will be held at the Darfield Bap st Church, Greendale Rd, Darfield.

This year we will be practising grafting onto stone fruit trees. Graft a different stone fruit onto a nectarine and take a double grafted tree home to plant in your own garden. We will also be swapping scion wood of pip and stone fruit trees. Scion wood cuttings are the mature dormant shoots of the previous season's growth used for grafting. If you have a favourite fruit tree, bring along some scion wood: Take cuttings 6 - 12mm in diameter and approximately 30cm long from one year old dormant shoots with well-developed vegetative buds that are narrow and pointed. Avoid floral buds, which are round and plump. Wrap the cut ends in damp paper, and label the bags with the type of fruit (apple, pear, peach, etc.) and the variety (if you know it) with your description of the fruit. Take home different scion wood to graft onto your home trees. Please bring: sharp secateurs, a small sharp grafting knife, protective gloves, bags and labels to take scion wood home in. tosoil.dobed.Cutspinach,broccoli,Plantspinach,Directbasil,onions,(includingSowboltLiftComeearlierat12pmtohelpmaintaintheCommunityGardenOrchard.Thankyou!GARDENFOCUSFORSEPTEMBER:theremainderofthewinterparsnipsandcarrotsbeforetheystarttoandturnwoody.Storetheminthefridge.intraysundercoverforplantingoutinOctober:Allbrassicasbrusselssprouts),silverbeet,perpetualspinach,lettuce,springleeks,celery,parsley,tomatoes,zucchinis,cucumbers,pumpkins,andspringflowers.sowintothegardenbed:Peas,broadbeans,carrots,beetroot,radish,rocket,mesclun.seedlingsoutintothegardenbed:Onions,brassicas(cauliflower,kale,cabbage),chard(silverbeet,perpetualspinach),lettuce,beetroot.overwinteringcovercrops:CutatgroundlevelandleaveonthegardenCoverthecutcropwithalayerofcompost,thenmulch.Thewormswillthediggingforyou-drawingthecropdownintotheLeavethebedforafewweeksforthecutcovercropdecomposebeforeplantingintoit.
