All four netball teams from Malvern Centre made the SemiFinals in their respective grades in the 2022 Selwyn Netball in the Masters grades both lost their semi, which meant the end of the season for them. Malvern C made it through to the final in 4th Grade and after a hard fought game against Dunsandel, they narrowly lost. The team has had a great season and played extremely well and the Centre is extremely proud of them.

The Malvern B team, technically should be called the Malvern A team, started off the season in Premier 3. After the grading round they were promoted to Premier 2 and won enough games to be fourth equal on the table at the end of the Competition round. Goal differential meant they played the top placed team in the Semi-Final, which they won. The Final, last Saturday, against Broadfield was goal for goal for the majority of the game and had spectators on the edge of their seats. Continued on page 11...

Darfield local, Malcolm McIntyre was employed by Rowing New Zealand to coach three crews at the World Rowing Championships in Italy, last month. He coached an Under 23 Men’s Coxless Quadruple Scull, which won a Bronze medal, the Men’s Lightweight Double Scull and a Men’s Single Scull. Malcolm has been coaching rowing since 1984, and the last twenty two years have been with Christ College Rowing. He decided to finally have a go at representing New Zealand on the world stage and was extremely honoured to be part of the New Zealand Under 23 team this winter. The New Zealand Under 23 squad assembled at Lake Karapiro (an artificial reservoir lake on the Waikato River at Karapiro, eight kilometres southeast of Cambridge) at the end of Easter 2022 for a fifteen week campaign that involved eleven weeks at Lake Karapiro, two and a half weeks at Lake Pusiano in Italy, and culminating with the last one and a half weeks at Lake Varese in Italy, where the Under 23 and 19 World Rowing Championships took place. The racing itself took place over six days and involved countries from all over the globe. This regatta has not been held for two years due to the Covid Lockdown, so this was the first opportunity for countries to race against each other. “The biggest problem with training and racing was the temperature. On arrival into Italy, we had 37 degrees, and the days were regularly around 33 to 36 degrees up to the final days of the regatta,” commented “IMalcolm.amextremely proud of the rowers I coached and was absolutely delighted the New Zealand Under 23 Men’s Coxless Quadruple Scull bought home a Bronze medal. This was a huge career highlight for me,” Malcolm concluded.
The long-awaited Malvern Community Service Awards were held on Monday, August 22nd, to recognise outstanding voluntary service in the Malvern year gap due to the Covid-19 pandemic, eleven people received awards at the ceremony, held at the recently refurbished Darfield Library. The Hororata Community Response Team were recognised for their efforts in supporting and preparing the community for Civil Defence emergencies, which have been far from few in recent years.

In 2017, we moved to Darfield, and when our fourth child was born in 2020, the combination of a new baby and the pandemic meant the perfect time to cut back. “I can say to the House that it's my expectation that the House will hold the Government to account. I say to the Leader of the Opposition and party leaders that I will do everything to ensure that you have the opportunity to hold the Government to account. To the Government, I say to you, my expectation is that you will be Withaccountable”.thosewords, Parliament’s new speaker, Rt Hon Adrian Rurawhe gave us members of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition much cause for hope. Speaker Rurawhe recently became the 31st Speaker of the House of Parliament and its second Māori Speaker. He comes with a legacy of respected leadership across Māoridom, the Rātana Church, and in Parliament. He combines personal humility with a determination to ensure that Parliament - and our democracy - functions well. For those reasons, he has the full support of the National Party. The 30th Speaker, however, did Innot. my two short years in Parliament, I have seen the credibility of the nation’s highest court erode, almost, to the point of no return. I have seen the mana - the prestige - of the Chair degraded and denigrated with countless instances of shouting matches and bully-boy tactics. And let’s not forget the false rape allegation levelled at a parliamentary staffer, the audacious use of over $300,000 of tax-payer money to pay the subsequent legal bill, or the infantile treatment of those protesting outside Parliament this year by dousing them with the lawn sprinklers and subjecting them to tortuous Whilemusic. these may seem beltway matters concerning Wellington, in actual fact they concern every man, woman and child of this Realm. All of us across Canterbury have, in some way, been impacted by the behaviour of Trevor Mallard. For, after all, it is this Chair - and the person who occupies itthat upholds New Zealand’s Timedemocracy.and time again Parliament’s infamous brawler has run interference to protect the Prime Minister, he has injudiciously shut down debate, he has prevented questions from being asked, and he regularly kicked members out of the Chamber - with seemingly little regard for the Speaker’s Rulings - the ‘rule book’ to which we all Inadhere.his acceptance remarks, Speaker Rurawhe went on to say that he will carry on the long tradition of upholding the rights and privileges of the House - and specifically referenced freedom of speech. He said, “you are all the voices of all the people that you represent, and it's important that their voices are heard. We may disagree with each other on both sides of the House, but it's really important that those voices are heard.” In just a few short words, Speaker Rurawhe has given us all cause for hope.

Volunteer of the Year Award. “It was a privilege to be nominated by Hororata Golf Club, and our success is largely due to the support of Club members,” commented Meg. Below is the citation written by current Hororata Golf Club President, Nicky Muir, nominating Jum and Meg for the Award “On behalf of the Hororata Golf Club, I would like to nominate John (Jum) Morten and Meg Morten for the Volunteer Of The Year Award. I would like to nominate them together for this Award rather than against each other. Both have given a huge amount of volunteer hours across all areas during the forty years they have been associated with the Club. Meg and John have held most administrative and management roles, including President, and both lead by example. John, in recent times took on the Club project of building a café. This was no easy task, but with a lot of hard work and determination, this café is completed and has become an important part of the Club Duringcommunity.the last year, John decided that the Club needed a custom-built shed to house our motorised carts. It needed to be near the office to make it easier for our office volunteers. The committee at the time agreed that if the funds were raised first, then the shed could go ahead. John successfully led the campaign and raised $75,000, he also project managed the build. This Cart Shed will be a huge asset for the Club. Meg was the first woman to hold the role of President in the Club, and she was born to lead. Never afraid to put her hand up to help with anything. In recent years Meg has been our Tournament Convenor and during her time has helped raise more than Meg$60,000.is also John’s right-hand man and is responsible for all the paperwork involved in their many hours of fundraising. To the Editor: On the morning of Wednesday, August 24th, the volunteers at Trinity Church served the last of this year's free Hot Chocolate drinks to seventy two Darfield School students as they walked to school through the grounds of Trinity Church. We acknowledge the milk gifted by Fonterra, it was greatly Whatappreciated.has been most encouraging for us is how friendly and polite the pupils are. We now think of them as our friends and enjoy their smiles and cheerful morning greetings. They often say, ‘have a nice day’ and always a cheerful 'thank you' when they take their hot chocolate.
REDEVELOPMENT CONFIRMED not just rush up and pat her. When Cindy and I step off the sealed footpath to let those on scooters and bicycles ride past us they always shout, ‘thank you’, and sometimes, 'have a good day' as they go by. This is great to hear, and it bodes well for the future of our town and Thankcountry.you to all the students who greet us and also to the adults who have taught them these social skills and good manners.
The next stage of the upgrades will see a new entrance way and shaded area with seating and picnic tables built. There will also be a new pool plant, which will better heat the pool and improve the swim experience.
Council Active Selwyn Manager James Richmond said, “the works are an exciting time for the pool. We really want to make the most of the pool and make sure people have a great experience there. It’s going to be a fun, vibrant space. The community has really embraced the learn to swim and aquafit classes we started there in recent seasons, and we’re looking forward to expanding that as well and make it a space for the whole community to really use and enjoy”.
The students are a joy to meet, and they are a credit to their parents, caregivers, teachers and our wider community. Every morning I walk my small dog, Cindy, around the streets near the schools, and we are greeted by polite, cheerful students who are not looking down at their phones or other devices. Younger children ask me if they can pat Cindy, and it is reassuring that they have been taught to ask if it is alright,

WMRC JUNIOR PRIZEGIVING Under14.5;LucasTapa-Wither,LucasPaterson,JadeMcKay,ChaseGallagherandBeetleMacRae.
West Melton Rugby Club held their Junior Prizegiving's recently. It was the perfect way to celebrate the players and a successful season. Their Under 13 team came up against Waihora for fifth and sixth playoffs in the Ellesmere Competition this year, winning 49 - 29. Coach Ross Soper and the Club are really proud of this group of players who have worked hard to keep improving their skill levels and knowledge of the game this season. They had a mix of players that have played rugby since rippa, coming through the grades to second and first year rugby players. To finish with a win for their last game was just fantastic and a real boost for the team. Pippa Wiseman won the Clubs Female Player of Year Cup for her great season with the Under 13 team and for going that extra mile by helping coach one of the Under 7 rippa teams.
The Under 14.5 team made the Ellesmere Semi-Final and came up against a very strong Rolleston Tigers side. The results didn't go their way on the day, but they finished up third in the Ellesmere Competition.

Local, Mark Beattie and Julia Chamberlain have recently completed the Great Naseby Water Race Run. This event covers distances from 50km to 200miles, with some people being out on the circuit for a couple of days. Mark entered the 100km option, which started at a very chilly 5am on Saturday, August 27th, however, the day turned into a stunning day for running, and Mark finished the race in 11 hours 20 minutes, taking out first place “Onceoverall.again, I had great support from Lauren Beattie, Keith and Susan Ross , who kept me hydrated, fed and massaged my calves when the cramp set in at around the 60km mark,” commented Mark. Julia entered the 50km race winning the female section in a time of 4 hours 28 minutes.
Over the weekend of the 20th21st of August, two local target shooters, Piper Benbow and Ryan Booth, travelled to Palmerston North for the Target shooting New Zealand North vs South competition. Piper was selected for the South Island Junior Team, narrowly missing out on the captain's position, South Island Women’s and the South Island Open team. Ryan was selected for the South Island Junior Team, South Island Men’s team and emergency for the South Island Open Team. These teams were selected from hundreds of shooters from both Islands and are based on scores from championship events shot throughout the season.
TOP EFFORT FROM LOCALS
Piper and Ryan both shot well in their South Island Junior Team match putting them in the top twelve of the combined North and South Island teams resulting in them both being selected for the New Zealand Junior team. Piper shot her South Island Women’s match next which wasn’t the result she had hoped for. Ryan shot his South Island Men’s match in the afternoon. The Island Open Team matches were shot in the late afternoon. Piper shot a personal best of 200.14 out of (200.20) with a total aggregate of 397.26 out of (400.40). Ryan also shot well, with a total aggregate of 394.24.
North vs South is always such a great event, getting to meet so many people and gaining experience on other ranges around the country builds ability and confidence. The pair would like to extend a big thanks to Malvern Miniature Rifle Association for all the help they have given them to get to the level to compete at this event and others like It. They look forward to seeing other juniors in our local clubs reach these levels of participation and achievement in the coming years.

NORTH VS SOUTH
“My goal of the day was to go as fast as I could for 40km and hang on for the last 10km. It was cold, to begin with, and my lungs took a bit of warming up,” commented Julia. “After the first 10km, I started to feel pretty good and put some pace on. 20km into the race, I passed the lady that was in front of me and wanted to put more distance on her. “At 35km I saw Mark and had a quick yarn, it was nice to see a local out on the course, and it gave me the spring in my step that I needed. “The last few kms were punishing, but I finished feeling satisfied. The undulating course was through the Forest, and the scenery around the course was “Ibeautiful.sawMum every 5km, she fed me and gave me water - she was incremental to me doing so well,” Julia concluded.
SPECIAL MEMORIES
They were both selected for the New Zealand Open Team. All the South Island matches were very close to the North Island scores, however, the North Island pipped them at the post, taking a clean sweep across all five Teams. The New Zealand matches were shot on Sunday morning, and considering the amount of shooting Piper and Ryan had done the day before, they both shot very well. The weekend ended on Sunday night with a formal dinner and award presentations. They were both presented with badges for first time in South Island Open Team and New Zealand Open Silver Fern, and Ryan also receive badge for first time South Island Men’s Team.

The Board meeting was held on Monday, August 22nd, in the Darfield Library/Service Centre, with the Chief Executive in attendance to assist and provide information. Work is continuing on providing a potable water supply to the Springfield area. Mitigation will include making a flow path to carry excess water away from the township. A public meeting is to be held in Springfield on September 15th, to provide the community with an update on progress. Also noted was both the need for improved road drainage in Lake Coleridge and the effect of the recent flooding in Kirwee. A public meeting is also to be held in Kirwee at some future date to discuss this issue.

Also noted was the funding made available to the Council from the Tourism and Infrastructure Fund to improve visitor facilities in the district. In Malvern, this will provide for new toilets at the Darfield Grain Shed (near Farmlands) and Waimakariri Gorge and the sealing of car parks at the Joyce Reserve in Glentunnel and the Lake Lyndon Reserve. Previously this fund has provided campground and toilet upgrades at the Hororata Reserve and Lake Coleridge. The Board approved grant applications from; the Glentunnel Museum, to assist with the restoration of the original boiler and winch which originally came from the Homebush Coalmine, in Surveyors Gully; Rubie Leech to attend the NZCAF Aerobics Nationals in Invercargill; Locals Club (Sheffield Waddington Community Group) towards the Judds Reserve Native Community Planting Project. The Board also made their annual grant to Darfield High School towards their end of year prizegiving event. Funding is available for community projects in the 2022/2023 year (Malvern Community Board Discretionary Fund), which can be applied for on Council’s website at www.selwyn.govt.nz/ services/funding-And-grants/discretionary-funding.
