Te Huanui is looking forward to bringing a wide range of mediums and styles, with its September exhibition, ‘Migration’, opening Friday, August 26th. Featuring popular abstract paintings by Paul Smith , Artweek 2021 prizewinning Silversmith, Angus Goodwin and the creative talents of textile artist Seonaid Burnie Paul Smith is a mostly self-taught artist whose interest in art really began after emigrating to New Zealand from the United Kingdom, in 1973. Paul found the New Zealand landscape provided plenty of inspiration in his early works, working in watercolours and pastels. While he enjoyed working in a representational style, he felt the need to push the boundaries and began experimenting with abstract art, using mixed media, acrylic and collage, for which he is now well Angusknown.Goodwin designs and makes contemporary jewellery from her Lyttelton workshop. Inspired by metals, gemstones and gifts from nature, with the aim of creating unique and wearable art. “I seek resonance with imagery, harmony in proportions, strive for beauty and a bit of whimsy,” commented InterpretingAngus. ‘Migration’ as ‘an act of movement’, is perfect for silversmithing as most pieces move one way or another. 2022 has had many references to movement: with Covid and whether people can move or not, in response to wars around the world, even in politics with people coming and going... Movement is all around uswe migrate from one place to another - and we want our journey to be safe. These pieces of jewellery are talismans for those on the move, each symbolic of different aspects of ‘Migration’ and the act of movement. Inspired by the green spaces of Ōtautahi Christchurch, local textile artist, Seonaid Burnie looks to create connections between the natural world and the art on our walls. Pre-loved and sustainable fabrics are transformed with plant-based dyes in conjunction with the natural process of eco-printing, using locally foraged leaves from the City’s Residential Red Zone. One-of-a-kind textiles, contours of stitch and suggestive whimsical threads are carefully composed to form abstract landscapes influenced by the scenery of Aotearoa New Zealand. This body of work focuses on how we cohabit with our environs, sparking conversations around the social and mental connections we have with our natural surroundings and bigger conversations about modern-day living and climate change. See advertisement in this issue for further details.

WELL SUPPORTED RALLY
Aappropriately.hugevariety of cars, motorcycles and even light trucks turned out. Many were in pristine condition, others were everyday drivers, and a few looked like they had just been pulled out from a long and dusty storage, given a WOF and registration and brought along for the day. The earliest vehicle was a Unic manufactured in 1912, and the newest was an almost brand-new Ford Mustang. The crowd were treated to live music, plenty of hot food from the Avonhead Rotary Club, and got to enjoy it all in near perfect weather, with the first shower for the day not arriving until the last car had departed. The organisers were overwhelmed by the generosity of the numerous participants who donated funds at the end of the Rally, raising just over $7,300. They would like to thank everyone who took part and made the day so successful.

Prior to illness, well-known Darfield local, Nicola Maley was a healthy, active woman, leading a full and busy life with her husband Shane, and two gorgeous daughters, Charli (12) and Lulu (11). In July 2021, Nicola was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colorectal Cancer. Testing found that cancer had also spread to her liver. Nicola underwent chemotherapy and had an operation, removing 70% of her liver, in December 2021. Another course of chemotherapy began, along with radiation therapy to reduce the cancer in her bowel, so they could then remove it and she would hopefully be cancer free. Unfortunately, the cancer returned to her liver. This was a big blow for the family, but in true Nicola fashion, she boxed on and recently completed more chemotherapy to reduce the new tumour in her liver. Unfortunately, the tumour did not reduce enough to operate and has subsequently spread to her lungs. Nicola will now undergo even more chemotherapy to stop the spread and hopefully reduce the liver tumour. The specialists have offered other drugs, Avastin and Cetuximab, which aren’t funded and could give Nicola precious time with her family. 2022 SKY TOWER CHALLENGE
IMPACT OF CONSENT NOTICES
By Olivia Edwards, Graduate Planner, Baseline Group. Buying or selling a property can be a stressful time, and due diligence forms are a critical part of deciding if you ought to purchase a home. We advise all our clients to check the title for consent notices and to understand what these mean for the future use of land and Abuildings.consent notice is a restriction held on a Certificate of Title, that requires ongoing compliance for any activity on that site. Consent notices are imposed by Council and often relate to underlying resource or subdivision consents. They can refer to matters such as retaining existing landscaping, restrictions on building materials, a significant natural or cultural feature, building platforms, or methods of servicing.
Consent notices can also be relevant to a particular area your application site is in. New subdivisions often have consent notices with specific conditions related to landscaping and fencing requirements, or what can be built on site. This may restrict your ability to subdivide or develop your site. A property title can have one, or multiple, consent notices and they are permanently held on a title, meaning they can have a big impact on your project. If you have a consent notice on your title, there may be additional reports at the time of construction to demonstrate the proposed activity is suitable for the site. This might be a land assessment by a certified geotechnical engineer, a detailed site investigation if contaminated soils are present, or it might simply require a landowner to install a portable water supply. A planner will be able to identify if there is a consent notice on your title and discuss your options with you, to either remove the consent notice or work around it. Consent notices can be changed if an activity cannot be complied with, by making an application to the Council. An application needs to include an ‘Assessment of Environmental Effects’ (AEE) that describes the environment, the proposed change in the consent notice and assesses the potential environmental effects and the ability to maintain Council objectives and policies. If you need to change a consent notice held on your title, a planner can work with you through each step of the process, providing expert advice to guide you through your project. Working with you and liaising with the Council on your behalf, a planner can review any existing consent applications and draft an application to submit to the Alternatively,Council. a planner will be able to help you identify what you need to work within the limits of your consent notice and connect you with the right expertise to allow you to build upon or use your land. Consent notices impact how you build and what you can do with your land. So, when carrying out due diligence on a property, always check and understand the contents of a consent notice.

However, in the Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge, these dedicated, strong men and women are putting in the hard yards for Kiwis going through a different kind of challenge. ECan’s Regional Leader of Compliance Monitoring, Steve Firth said, “structures can cause ‘serious environmental impacts’ and have been an issue previously. They can change the hydraulics of the river and cause bank destabilisation, flood risk and sediment issues, which impacts the habitat of native plant and animal life.
The whitebait fishing season now runs from September 1st to October 30th (inclusive) nationwide (except for the Chatham Islands - December 1st to the last day of February inclusive).

“A big thanks also, to all the committee members of the Centre and Clubs who help make the season run smoothly.
Let’s share concerns and ideas.
Malvern Netball, like most winter sports centres, were pleased to get through the season, even though they once again had players affected by Covid. The season started at the end of March with the Senior Midweek Competition, with six teams competing. The overall winner was Springfield/Sheffield Sharks, who also took the honours of winning the Searle Family Challenge Shield again this season.

THE MALVERN A & P ASSN. advise members that the Annual General Meeting will be held at the Sheffield Pavilion on Friday 9th September 2022 at 8pm. All existing and prospective members welcome.
The Social and Year 7/8 Grades played on Saturdays, along with the Year 5/6 Future Ferns. Years 1/2 and 3/4 were held on a Monday afternoon in Term 2 and had a few days postponed due to the weather.
NETBALL PRIZEGIVING
“Val McKenzie was awarded the Betsy Little Service Award for all the dedication she puts into the Centre, and Victoria Leech won the Terina Graham Future Ferns Trophy for all the effort she puts into the Junior Netball Programme on both Monday afternoons and Saturdays. Victoria spends hours planning and presenting the Programme and ensuring it all runs according to plan.
The season has also finished for the Malvern A and Malvern Masters team that play in the Selwyn Netball Competition, on a Thursday night. Both teams were pleased to have made the semi-finals and disappointed to not reach the finals. However, Malvern B and C are both playing off in their Grade finals this weekend at Selwyn Sports Centre in Rolleston. Malvern B started the season in Premier 3 and were promoted after the first round to Premier 2. They went into the semi-final in 4th place and won, which means they play at 1:30pm against Broadfield Senior B.
“The Centre couldn’t run without all the people that volunteer their time and for that, I am extremely grateful,” commented President, Vanessa Moore.

Finally, the outhouse toppled into the creek and floated away. That night his dad told him they were going to the woolshed after supper. Knowing that meant he was in trouble, the little boy asked why. The dad replied, “Someone pushed the outhouse into the creek today. It was you, wasn’t it son?” The boy answered yes. Then he thought a moment and said, “Dad, I read in school today that George Washington chopped down a cherry tree and didn’t get into trouble because he told the truth.”
Once there was a little boy who lived in the country. They had to use an outhouse, and the little boy hated it because it was hot in the summer, cold in the winter and stank all the time. The outhouse was sitting on the bank of a creek and one day after a spring rain, the creek was swollen so the little boy decided he was going to push the outhouse into the water. So he got a large stick and started pushing.
The dad replied, “Well, son, George Washington’s father wasn’t in that cherry tree.”
