Selwyn Deputy Returning Officer Stephen Hill commented, “that with many councils around New Zealand struggling to attract nominations, it’s encouraging to see a full complement of candidates in Selwyn. “The turnout of candidates is good news for local democracy and Selwyn. It shows there’s a strong level of interest from residents wanting to contribute to their communities and the district’s future. “It’s also great to see so many new names among those taking a stand - more than half of the nominees are people who haven’t been involved in the Council or Community Board before,” concluded Stephen. The total of 29 candidate nominations is four more than the 25 received in the last local elections in 2019. Matthew said, “polo is a lot of work to get the ponies fit and ready, but it is just like rugby on horseback, and I love the challenge of getting the ponies going well and playing a hard game.” He has enjoyed playing in tournaments around Canterbury over the last two summers. Matthew also made his debut as a Crusader Horseman (now Guardian Horseman) at two of the Crusader’s home games this season, taking over the reins from his Dad. Both boys are really looking forward to the trip to Scone, where they hope to learn a lot and beat the Aussies!

The annual Darfield Artweek 2022 Exhibition, now in its 41st year, is open for entries! Held in the Darfield Recreation Centre, the Exhibition has attracted over 300 entries from over 100 artists in the previous two years, in a range of mediums from painting and photography, through to jewellery, ceramics and many more. Artweek is known to be a fantastic opportunity to kick start an exhibiting career alongside both emerging and established artists and even be in to win prizes. There are numerous cash and voucher prizes to be won thanks to our generous sponsors, including the Premier Award which is a cash prize of $2,000.

Matthew started off on his favourite pony, Quiz, and has since been lucky to inherit some experienced polo ponies, including Rastus, Lucy and Fanta, and Peroni that have joined his team for the new season.

I won’t hold my breath. The submissions on the Water Services Entities Bill have now closed - the Select Committee received over 88,000 Thesubmissions.message from this is clear. Kiwis overwhelmingly reject Three Waters. It appears though that Labour doesn’t care what the public has to say though and will rush through Three Waters despite this intense opposition. My colleague Simon Watts moved that the Select Committee should take extra time in light of the huge number of submissions received on the Bill, but despite all other political parties on the committee agreeing, Labour used its absolute majority to block it. Labour also used its majority to prevent most of the people and organisations who asked to make an oral submission via the 16,000 submissions collected by National from doing so. So, anti-democratic and horrendously Moreexpensive.than $26 million has been spent on consultants alone. These costs are increasing by more than $1 million a month. At the end of February, the amount spent was $21 million. At the end of May, it was $26 million, and every month Labour burns more cash trying to figure out and sell these reforms that won’t work. While all this money is being paid out to consultants in Wellington, not a single metre of pipe has been delivered to communities in need. On top of consultant costs, it has spent $2.5 billion in bribes to councils to try to convince them to support Three Waters. Meanwhile, it appears that they don’t know how much the IST transition to their new entities will cost but that it could be over $500 Nationalmillion.has committed to repealing this reform and will return any seized assets. But we do acknowledge there is a case for change in some parts of New Zealand. Our model would be set in a few fundamental principlesthe key being by partnering with Local Government to solve the real issues around Three Waters. Fundamentally it will maintain local ownership of water assets and respect local property rights, provide tools for asset owners to achieve sustainable financing and revenue adequacy, provide a regulatory backstop for incentive management and water quality within an efficient and effective regulatory environment, safeguard against privatisation, respect the role of mana whenua, but not introduce co-governance of water assets, provide a financial assistance regime for districts that need it and assistance with transitions to sustainable models. The fight against Three Waters has just begun, and National will fight the Government every step of the way to stop these broken reforms from going through. Nicola Grigg, MP for Selwyn.

SELWYN

SUFFRAGISTS

Those that attended the Malvern U3A August meeting, held at the Baptist Church on the 12th, were fortunate to have Lynda Seaton , a historian and genealogy researcher as their speaker. The subject was the Selwyn Suffragists, (not to be confused with the English term Suffragettes, which only refers to the female gender, Suffragists are non-gender specific). Lynda is researching the ladies who signed the 1893 Suffrage Petition with particular reference to the Selwyn District. As many of you know, the instigator of the 1893 Petition was Katherine (Kate) Shepherd who was a resident in Christchurch. The background to women wanting the vote came out of the temperance movement. Many women were struggling to feed themselves and their children as the men were drinking all their wages in local hostelries. Two main groups were calling for temperance, the ‘Women’s Christian Temperance Union’ started in 1885, and ‘The Band of Hope’ that came out of the UK and had its origins in Leeds in 1847. There was an earlier Petition in 1892, but that failed to get traction. Kate Shepherd organised the 1893 Petition supported by Sir John Hall of WhenHororata. the Petition was completed, she laid it out in her hall to paste together the pages. There were 500 sheets with a length of 270 meters, and 3,427 names were recorded. The only male signatory on that document was Sir John Hall. Kate Shepherd carried camellias from her garden to Parliament when the Petition was presented, with purple ribbons for loyalty. The camellia became synonymous with Kate Shepherd, and as such, there is a white camellia named after her. Yes, this time the Petition succeeded but only by a margin of two in favour of the Petition. It was signed into law on the 19th of September, 1893. Lynda presented details from one area of Selwyn (Annat) and researched the names on the petition from that area, which was at the time a thriving community with shops and businesses and a strong Band of Hope in the area. From Annat, there were twenty four female signatories on the 1893 petition. Lynda has traced the history and occupation of many of these women. There were diverse occupations, with the majority listed as dressmakers or schoolteachers, and one woman said her occupation was ‘Lady’. Lynda is currently researching all the Selwyn ladies who signed the Petition, and we will be pleased to have a return lecture when she has finished her research. Lynda’s speech was thoroughly informative and most enjoyable. Jacky Lawson, On behalf of Malvern U3A.

On Saturday, August 13th, Lincoln Envirotown ran its second High School Waste Art Competition and Exhibition. The Competition ran for the first time last year after being suggested by a local businessperson who donated generous prize money. It was open to all high school students from within the Selwyn District. This year a new category was added for Year 7 and 8 students who attended any school rather than just those at high school. The art pieces must be assembled or constructed from previously used materials, which otherwise would have likely gone to landfill. The response to this recently introduced project has been overwhelming. Last year there were twenty two entries, and this year there were thirty four pieces of art, all of a high standard. This year the event moved to the Te Whare Tapere space in the new Rolleston Library which enabled the work to be exhibited for the whole weekend. The judges from the Youth Council, along with a local artist and library team member, were hugely impressed with the high standard of work. All the art had to be from materials that were destined for landfill, and we were really made to re-consider our views on rubbish. “Deputy Mayor, Malcolm Lyall , presented the Awards and congratulated the participants on their hard work, imagination, and the messages they were sending,” commented Lincoln Envirotown Trust’s Project Manager, Dave Fitzjohn The Overall winner was Caitlin White for a very powerful portrayal of the damage that microplastics are doing. The High School Category was won by Caiah Pitkethley for ‘Pretty in Plastic’ a dress and jewellery created from waste plastic. The Intermediate Category was won by Lachie Smolenski with his bottle top rugby player in ‘Conversion’, which referred both to the action and the concept of conversion of waste into something worthwhile.

For those of you who have locked in your mortgage for two or more years out, the pain is yet to hit. However, for those of you who have loans rolling in the next 12 months, you will be feeling the pinch now. My advice is to get ahead of the game before your hand is forced. Drop the non-essential items - yes, Sky, Netflix, and that morning coffee are in fact, NON ESSENTIAL ITEMS. Sit down as a family and set goals. If everyone is on board, it becomes a family bonding challenge and can reap more rewards than saving the roof over your heads. Learn how to grow veges from seed, and join forces with your neighbours to grow a street garden. Buy the cheap cuts of meat and make your proteins go further with creative cooking. There are a myriad of ways to achieve small savings every week, which will add up to meet the mortgage and house insurance payments, ESSENTIAL ITEMS. Oakley’s, based in Southbridge, is on a journey of continuous improvement to be a sustainable and healthy food producer for New Zealand. “We are proud that our efforts have been recognised as industry-leading by our peers. Sustainability is a journey, not a destination. We looked forward to continually refining and innovating our growing and packing practices to deliver only the best fresh vegetables to kiwi families,” commented Robin Oakley. “In recent years, we have taken considerable steps to reduce, monitor and manage greenhouse gas emissions, nitrogen leaching and improve soil quality through initiatives such as the Sustainable Vegetables System “Inproject.particular, Oakley’s have looked to power usage and installed 564 solar panels at the Southbridge post-harvest site in April. These 390-watt panels will account for around 40% of the site’s annual energy demands,” concluded Robin. Oakley’s Premium Fresh Vegetables grow potatoes, beetroot, broccoli, pumpkin and arable crops, including grass seed, wheat, peas and maize, on more than 450 hectares. They wash, grade and pack their produce on site. There have been five generations of growers in the family. It all began back in the 1870s with Great Great Grandad John Oakley who began growing out in West Melton soon after arriving in New Zealand from the United Kingdom. Next was Great Grandad William Henry Oakley . William retired in 1947, but not before his son and Robin’s Grandfather Walter Mark William Oakley came on the Walterscene.farmed alongside his father until he was 26 years old before purchasing his own farm in 1934. Walter invented modern farming equipment which has revolutionised the horticulture industry in New Zealand. In 1957 Graeme William Oakley , son of Walter and Rose, bought the original titles of the family farm in Halkett. By the mid-sixties, Graeme irrigated the entire farm. Graeme worked alongside his father until the early ’80s. Like his predecessors, Graeme experimented growing other plants like barley, beet, seed potatoes and red clover. Graeme worked on the farm until with his wife Dorothy, Robin’s mother, until 2010. Visit the Oakley’s Premium Vegetable stand at the Christchurch Food Show (19 - 21 August).

Tool Maintenance Demonstration Are you frustrated with blunt spades and secateurs, and the broken handle on your favourite garden fork? This month Dave Askin and Mike and Bronwyn Adams-Hooper will teach us how to fix and sharpen garden tools. On the 25th August bring your secateurs to get sharpened, and learn: • How to sharpen pruning equipment • How to replace handles • How to choose the appropriate height tool to lessen risk of injury and fatigue • The difference in tool quality and what to look out for • Their 3 favourite GARDENtoolsFOCUS FOR SEPTEMBER: The weather can be very changeable in the early spring, so it is important to cover your early planted beds with frost cloth and/or plastic cloches to protect the tender plants from wind, frost and snow. Cloches also provide a microclimate for seeds to germinate. Vent plastic cloches during the day and check under them regularly for watering, pest management, and germination. Sow in trays undercover for planting out in October: All brassicas (including brussels sprouts), silverbeet, perpetual spinach, lettuce, spring onions, leeks, celery, parsley, tomatoes, zucchinis, cucumbers, pumpkins, basil, and spring flowers. Direct sow into the garden bed: Peas, broad beans, carrots, beetroot, spinach, radish, rocket, mesclun. Plant seedlings out into the garden bed: Onions, brassicas (cauliflower, broccoli, kale, cabbage), chard (silverbeet, perpetual spinach), lettuce, spinach, beetroot. Cut overwintering cover crops: Cut at ground level and leave on the garden bed. Cover the cut crop with a layer of compost, then mulch. The worms will do the digging for you - drawing the crop down into the soil. Leave the bed for a few weeks for the cut cover crop to decompose before planting into Springit. Seed Share Collect your free seed and practice your seed raising skills by growing some seedlings for the upcoming Spring Seedling Swap. Choose one or two packets of seed you would like to grow. Sow them in trays, prick them out when they are big enough, and pot them up in punnets. Care for them and watch them grow. Bring 6-8 punnets with you to the Seedling Swap on the 15th October, and plant the rest in your own garden. Seeds for sowing directly into your early spring garden, along with pots, punnets, and potting mix will also be available.

The Daffodil Rally for Cancer is the Vintage Car Club’s (VCC) showcase event, and this year it’s being held on Sunday, August 21st. The event is being run simultaneously by VCC branches all over the country to benefit the Cancer Society and all funds raised at the Canterbury run will be attributed to the Canterbury/West Coast branch. The Rally begins between 10am and 10.30am from four different locations where people will pick up driving instructions, and head off on the routes. There are short and long run options for each start point, and as people drive the routes, they will pass vehicles from other start locations travelling in the opposite Participantsdirection.willbe able to make a donation to the Cancer Society (minimum of $10 per vehicle, please) as they arrive at the finish, however, they can also pay it online before or during the run and show their receipt, either hard-copy or on their phone when they arrive. All runs finish at the VCC grounds at McLeans Island Road before 12pm, where the Avonhead Rotary Club will have barbeque food and drinks for sale. There will be live entertainment at the grounds, provided by an artist specialising in music from the 1960s to the There1980s.will also be prizes for best American, Australian, British, European and Japanese vehicles, best motorcycle, best couple dressed in the era of their vehicle, and a special trophy for a vehicle matching the theme of the day chosen by a representative from the Cancer TheSociety.event will be run regardless of the weather on the day - there will be indoor facilities open at the finish if needed. This event has had to be postponed for the last two years due to Covid Lockdowns, so given that both Covid and the flu are still present in the community, everyone is encouraged to bring a facemask with them and/or maintain good social distance in public areas. See advertisement below for contact details and start locations.

The family of the late Roy Lavery, wish to thank all those who sent cards and letters, provided baking and gave support. Your kindness was appreciated.greatly

A li le boy was wai ng for his mum to come out of a store. He was approached by a man who asked “Son, can you tell me where the Post Office is?”

My husband and I both have the common cold. He has requested a priest and his family to be by his I’llbedside.getright on that as soon as I finish the laundry, wash the dishes and shovel the driveway!

“Sure, straight down the street and turn right,” said the boy. The man thanked the boy and said “I’m the new Minister in town. Come to church on Sunday and I’ll show you how to get to heaven.” The boy chuckled “Awww come on... You don’t even know the way to the Post Office.”
